Abstract:The work presents a design of a cylindrical conformal phased microstrip antenna array. Based on the HFM and the parallel feed network, a conformal microstrip 2 times 8 array on a cylinder surface is designed by the isotropic transformation theory (IT). Simulation results show that the conformal array works at 35GHz and the gain is 19.6dB at the center frequency. The phase-scanned patterns of the conformal 2 times 8 array are analyzed by the CST using phase control method. From the comparison of the scanning results at different phase division, it can be found that the scan angle, the angular width and the side lobe level varies following the trends of the phase division, at the same time, the gain of the conformal array changes markedly opposite the trends of the phase division. Therefore, this is a shortcoming of the conformal phased array. This kind of conformal phased sub-array can be easily expanded into a large-scale conformal array and be suitable for active integration with other microwave circuits and communication systems if this disadvantage was eliminated after further discussion in future.

Abstract:A new surface integral equation formulation is presented for characterizing electromagnetic radiation by conformal microstrip arrays on finite curved bodies of arbitrary shapes. The surface equivalence principle is used to reduce the original problem to two equivalent problems, one for the external medium and another for the internal medium. Electric field integral equations are applied to the conducting surfaces, and weighted sums of the field integral equations corresponding to the external and internal dielectric regions with appropriate weighted coefficients are applied to the dielectric interface. The integral equations are solved via the method of moments (MoM) procedure, to which the memory requirement and computational complexity pertinent is reduced by employing the adaptive integral method (AIM). Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the validity and accuracy of the method.

Abstract:To model the object with concave and convex surfaces accurately, an economical conformal subgridding scheme is proposed in this article. Its double conforming procedure with coarse grid (CG) and fine grid (FG) guarantees the modeling accuracy. Fast linear interpolation effectively exchanges electromagnetic fields information on the interface between grids of two sizes. One-step leapfrog alternating direction implicit (ADI) finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method overcomes the Courant stability condition in FG region; meanwhile, conventional FDTD ensures the efficiency of simulation in CG region. While we concern the unconditionally stable method, there is not any grid omitted in our irregularly profiled fine region and any extra time wasted in solving small-scale tridiagonal matrixes cell by cell. To verify our codes, a 2-D arc component has been simulated first. Then the performance of a probe-fed normal one-eighth spherical dielectric resonator antenna (DRA), a new designed conformal-microstrip-fed one-eighth spherical shell DRA, and a four-element array with the spherical shell DRAs connected by a T-shaped power divider has been calculated by our codes. Satisfactory performance of the antenna has been obtained in return loss and radiation patterns, which are verified by measured results. The shell antenna features smaller size, lighter weight, and more convenience in conforming to the corners of the instrument housing, even with different dimensions. Most particularly, the proposed conformal subgridding scheme and its hybrid FDTD implementation perform outstandingly in simulating the thin shell antenna in terms of computer memory, CPU time, as well as accuracy.

Abstract:A practical implementation of wideband and wide-scanning cylindrically conformal phased array is presented in this communication. First, the design of a dual-polarized planar array is introduced in advance. Then, as a preliminary performance investigation of a conformal phased array, a single-polarized array element counterpart is developed from the dual-polarized planar array with simple modifications. Finally, a conformal array is implemented using the 8 x 8 single-polarized radiating elements that are axially mounted onto a cylindrical surface with a radius of 150 mm. A conformal array prototype is fabricated and measured. The experimental results demonstrate that the array achieves active VSWR less than 3.0 over a bandwidth of 6-18 GHz (3:1), within a wide-scanning range of +/- 60 degrees in two principal planes. The measured results are in good accordance with the simulations, thus validating the performances of the proposed wideband and wide-scanning cylindrically conformal phased array.

Abstract:A linearly polarized conformal phased array antenna with a large scanning range and an ultra-low profile is proposed, based on stacked patch antenna element fed by a coupled microstrip line. A backed compact cavity is designed in the antenna element, to reduce the mutual coupling between the elements. Therefore, the scanning ability of the proposed array, a conformal array composed of 4×4 elements which are axially mounted onto a cylindrical surface, is enhanced. The prototype of the proposed conformal array is fabricated and measured, whose profile is as low as 0.072λ h (λ h is the free-space wavelength at 1.77GHz). The experimental results demonstrate that the array achieves active VSWR below than 2.5 over the frequency band of 1.52~1.77GHz (15%), within the wide-scanning ranges of ±70° in the E plane and ±60° in the H plane, and the measured results are in good accordance with the calculation.

Abstract:In this paper, we present an analytical beam-forming approach capable of synthesizing differently shaped beams for circularly symmetric conformal apertures with axisymmetrical excitations. Closed form formulas of far-field radiation are mathematically derived in order to obtain rotationally symmetric radiation patterns for typical conformal apertures frequently used in satellite and flight vehicle applications, such as the cone-surfaced, truncated cone-surfaced, hybrid disc-cone and sphere-cone apertures. Based on these formulas, various shaped beams, including pencil, flat-topped and bimodal beams can be rapidly achieved by adjusting either the geometric parameters or the excitation distributions of the conformal apertures. The deterministic approach proposed in this paper provides an efficient method to synthesize specified beam shapes for the aforementioned conformal apertures. Collaborating with conventional optimization based beam forming approaches, the proposed approach can effectively shorten the time-consuming optimization in the beam forming of circularly symmetric conformal arrays, especially large conformal arrays.

Abstract:A novel embedded element pattern decomposition method is proposed to synthesize conformal phased antenna arrays. This method decomposes the embedded element patterns as a product of a characteristic matrix and a Vandermonde structured matrix. This Vandermonde matrix is composed of modes in the modal space at the sampling angles. Because the fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm can be used in the Vandermonde structure, the computational cost can be reduced tremendously. In addition to its computational efficiency, the proposed method is also applicable to the synthesis of a pattern with any mainlobe direction and optimized polarization. A modified particle swarm optimization (PSO) method is applied to optimize the weights of the modes. This method is demonstrated through a simulation of a 9-element conformal array. The results show the advantages of the new method in achieving a low peak side lobe, accurate mainlobe scanning, and low cross-polarization.

Abstract:Transformation Optics has been proven a versatile technique for designing novel electromagnetic devices and it has much wider applicability in many subject areas related to general wave equations. Among them, quasi-conformal transformation optics (QCTO) can be applied to minimize anisotropy of transformed media and has opened up the possibility to the design of broadband antennas with arbitrary geometries. In this work, a wide-angle scanning conformal phased array based on all-dielectric QCTO lens is designed and experimentally demonstrated. Excited by the same current distribution as such in a conventional planar array, the conformal system in presence of QCTO lens can preserve the same radiation characteristics of a planar array with wide-angle beam-scanning and low side lobe level (SLL). Laplace’s equation subject to Dirichlet-Neumann boundary conditions is adopted to construct the mapping between the virtual and physical spaces. The isotropic lens with graded refractive index is realized by all-dielectric holey structure after an effective parameter approximation. The measurements of the fabricated system agree well with the simulated results, which demonstrate its excellent wide-angle beam scanning performance. Such demonstration paves the way to a robust but efficient array synthesis, as well as multi-beam and beam forming realization of conformal arrays via transformation optics.

Design and Implementation of Ultra-Wideband Dual-Polarized Conformal Phased Array

Abstract:This letter presents an innovative design and implementation method for an ultra-wideband dual-polarized conformal phased array. The performance of single-layer continuous dipoles under bending conditions is evaluated through characteristic mode analysis to understand the impact of curvature on operational stability. This analysis provides design insights into the maximum allowable curvature while maintaining stable dipole performance. Subsequently, a single-layer metal radiation structure is designed as the array element, and simulations indicate that it supports ultra-wideband operation with dual polarizations. Using this element, an 8 * 8 ultra-wideband dual-polarized cylindrical-conformal array (UDCA) is developed, demonstrating stable performance even at a curvature radius as small as 100 mm. A physical prototype is fabricated cost-effectively using novel manufacturing techniques that stack a three-layer conformal substrate. Experimental result demonstrates that the proposed UDCA with a 1.2{\lambda} curvature radius operates at 3.6~9.6 GHz (90.9%) and achieves 60° wide-scanning in E-/H-planes, which provides a practical and promising solution for conformal array applications.

A Wideband Dual-Polarized Conformal Phased Array Based on Tightly Coupled Dipoles

Abstract:A wideband dual-polarized conformal phased array based on tightly coupled dipoles with 3:1 bandwidth is presented. Previous studies on wideband phased arrays are mainly focused on tightly coupled dipoles planar arrays. This paper reports a dual-polarized, tightly-coupled dipole 2D conformal phased array, which has much more preponderance in application. The conformal array employs a wide-angle impedance matching layer (WAIM). The simulated finite conformal array demonstrates broadside VSWR <; 2 across a 3:1 bandwidth, and VSWR <; 2.3 for a 3:1 bandwidth while scanning up to 60°, with cross polarization levels <; -20dB, in all planes. The array height, including the WAIM, is 0.14 wavelength above the ground plane, at the lowest operational frequency, and 0.41 wavelength at the highest frequency.

Abstract:Conformal antenna arrays become more popular on aircraft owing to significant improvement of aerodynamic and stealth performance. Since the interaction between the platform and the antenna array matters in the simulation results and their meshing produces a large matrix, the analysis of conformal array is computationally expensive. In this article, an efficient method is proposed for the analysis of arbitrary conformal array on cylindrical surface. A periodic Green's function combined with the method of moments (MoMs) enables efficient analysis with one unit cell. In addition, the Rao–Wilton–Glisson (RWG) basis function is adopted to describe the surface current of arbitrarily shaped array element. Cylindrical periodic Green's function (CPGF) is calculated by Wynn's -algorithm to improve the convergence, and a modified sampling procedure is developed for the RWG basis and weighted functions in the MoM. Key metrics of conformal array, such as the reflection coefficient, mutual coupling, and radiation pattern, are efficiently evaluated by the proposed method. The influences of conformal curvature and element interval are studied, indicating that the interval is a more important factor affecting the near-field characteristics. This method and conclusions can assist the design of various cylindrical conformal arrays.

Abstract:The aperture design of conformal arrays is predicated on the knowledge of the element patterns and coupling coefficients in a mutually coupled environment. For equispaced identical slits on a perfectly conducting cylinder, a previous analysis has utilized the modal theory of periodic structures to simplify the calculations. Modal procedures are rather difficult to apply when the array surface has a more general, though rotationally symmetric and separable, shape; they become practically inapplicable when the surface is nonseparable. These difficulties may be overcome by recourse to the geometrical theory of diffraction and utilization of surface rays whose properties are determined from an appropriately defined local environment on the array surface. Depending on the problem under consideration, the local environment may involve either the unperforated array surface or a surface with periodic loading. It is shown how the surface ray technique can be applied to the analysis of mutual coupling in full ring arrays and finite arrays on a circular cylinder, and in nonperiodic or almost periodic arrays on surfaces of variable curvature. For finite arrays, a theoretical model leading to a representation of finiteness effects in terms of multiple scattering of surface rays of the periodic array structure between the edge discontinuities is confirmed by independently calculated numerical results. Although the demonstrations in this paper are confined to two-dimensional geometries, the procedure is applicable also to three-dimensional configurations.

Abstract:A simple pattern analysis method is presented for conformal antenna arrays, considering mutual coupling effects based on the characteristic modes of isolated elements. There are many methods to analyze the performance of conformal antenna arrays, but they seldom provide a clear insight into the coupling mechanism. Thus, the overall characteristic modes of the conformal array are calculated from the characteristic modes of the isolated elements and coordinate transformation, which are different from the traditional modal analysis for the entire array. And the radiation field of the conformal array is given. The modal coupling matrix which depends on the structural parameters and relative pose of conformal elements is used to characterize the mutual coupling effect between elements and explain the coupling mechanism from the perspective of the characteristic currents. Finally, the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method is verified by some numerical examples.

Abstract:In this paper, a wide-scanning linear conformal phased array is presented. The antenna element is mainly composed of a dipole, a Marchand balun, a shorting-pin, two directors and frequency selective surface (FSS) structure. Besides, the proposed array is implemented using the 1×12 radiating elements that are mounted onto a curved wing surface. Simulated results show that the array can achieve VSWR less than 3.0 over 20% bandwidth, within a wide-scanning range of ±60° in E plane. In addition, the array has a gain reduction of less than 0.86dBi when scanning to ±60° in the horizontal direction.

Abstract:A low-profile wide-scanning conformal phased array (CPA), with cavity-backed stacked patch elements, is presented in this paper. To reduce the array profile, a partially dielectric-filled cavity is employed in each element, and to enhance its scanning performance, the cavity walls are deliberately modified. Finally, the designed element operates in a frequency band of 1.45∼1.75 GHz, with a profile of 0.086 λh (λh is the free-space wavelength at 1.75 GHz), and achieves ±60° scanning in the E/H-planes, with the reflection coefficient below −7 dB. The proposed design method and all numerical results are experimentally verified by a 4 × 4 CPA prototype.

Abstract:Planar quasi-periodic arrays are widely used in many electromagnetic devices such as metasurfaces, reflectarray antennas, nano particle arrays, etc. They comprise similar elements located on periodic grids. In this work, we compare the reflection phase of elements in the array between the designed value and the practical one. This difference is mainly because real quasi-periodic arrays break the periodicity assumption used in computing the designed element phase. To study this error, we develop a formulation based on Floquet theory to compute the reflection phase of a unit-cell in a practical array. We observe that the error can be significant for elements with high-Q resonances and can deteriorate the performance of reflectarray antennas or metasurfaces. As a remedy, we develop a workflow for element phase correction based on full-wave simulation of the entire array. An improvement in performance is observed for arrays with high-Q resonances.

Abstract:An efficient approach for calculating the far-field patterns of conformal array antennas mounted on arbitrarily shaped platforms is proposed in this paper. Starting from the superposition principle for arrays, an active-element-pattern technique, including element mutual coupling and platform effects, is used to illuminate the radiation characteristics of arrays. By dividing all elements into different parts and neglecting the weak mutual coupling affected by far elements for each part, a large array problem can be divided into a superposition of various simplified subarray problems. Coordinate rotations are derived and applied to array elements for calculating total field radiation. Two numerical examples indicated that the proposed method is well validated. These results showed that the proposed method with the active-element-pattern technique has an advantage in calculating large array antennas, when other methods become incapable due to computer hardware limitations.
