Abstract:The gas accumulation in the return corner of a high-gas fully mechanized mining face can easily cause the gas volume fraction to exceed the safety limit, threatening the safety of coal mines. In this study, the unit method was used to analyze the gas sources and emissions based on the actual case. The airflow and gas distribution characteristics of the two-inlet-one-outlet (TIOO) ventilation system and the one-inlet-two-outlet (OITO) ventilation system were studied using CFD numerical simulation. The results show that under the TIOO ventilation system, the “U”-type air leakage in the goaf leads deep gas into the return corner, which causes the gas volume fraction in the return corner to rise to 0.4–2.0%. After the mining face is optimized into the OITO ventilation system, the “J”-type air leakage of the goaf suppresses the high concentration of gas in the deep position of the goaf. Combined with the gas extraction measures, the gas volume fraction in the return corner, exhaust roadway’s outlet, and retaining roadway’s outlet is controlled at 0.28%, 0.34%, and 0.23%. This study will provide new ideas for solving the problem of gas accumulation in the return corner of a high-gas fully mechanized mining face.

Research on controlling gas overrun in a working face based on gob-side entry retaining by utilizing ventilation type “Y”

Abstract:Abstract To determine the characteristics of air leakage concerning a “Y” type ventilation in gob-side entry retaining with roof cutting, pressure relief, and the law of a resulted gas accumulation (GA), research is conducted by employing the CFD simulation incorporated with the gauged parameters of working face (WF) mining to analyze the air leakage of “Y” type ventilation. For this purpose, the 1201 fully mechanized coal mining face in the south Wu mining location of the Daxing coal mine is taken as an illustrative example to study the air leakage in the “Y” type ventilation. So, the gas concentration (GC) issue surpassing the limit in the upper corner of the goaf was simulated. The results show that the goaf is formed into an open space when roof cutting and pressure relief technology along the goaf is implemented. The air pressure at the upper corner of the WF would be the lowest, which is only 1.12 Pa. The airflow of air leakage under a pressure difference would move from the gob-side entry retaining to the goaf. Moreover, the simulation of mine ventilation indicates that the volume of air leakage positively correlates with the length of gob-side entry retaining. When the WF is advanced 500 m ahead, the maximum volume of air leakage would reach 247 m 3 /min within the range of 500–1300 m, and then the rate of air leakage gradually would decrease. When the WF is advanced at 1300 m, the air leakage would become the smallest, which is 175 m 3 /min. When gas control is under consideration, the effect of gas extraction would be best with the buried pipe whose depth and diameter are set to 4.0 m and 400 mm, respectively. So, the GC in the upper corner would become 0.37%. After the high-level borehole with a 120 mm diameter is mined, the GC in the deep goaf decreased to 3.52%, and the GC at the upper corner became further reduced to 0.21%. While the high-level borehole gas is extracted by employing the extraction system of the high-concentration gas, the extraction system of low-concentration gas is utilized to extract the upper corner gas of the WF, thus, the problem of gas overrun was resolved satisfactorily. During the recovery period of the mining, the GC at each gauging point was less than 0.8%, which effectively guided the secure production in the Daxing coal mine and provided a theoretical foundation to control gas overrun during the mining process.

Abstract:Abstract In view of the problem of gas safety in fully mechanized caving face under complex geological conditions, taking high-level borehole gas extraction as the main gas control means to improve the extraction effect and ensure gas safety during mining, this paper takes 131301 fully mechanized caving face of Xinji No. 1 Coal Mine of Zhongmei as an example to study and analyze the layout of high-level borehole. Through the actual measurement, the gas concentration in the upper corner retaining wall is basically controlled below 0.2%, and in the return air lane is controlled below 0.08%, which shows that this method has achieved good gas drainage effect and ensured gas safety during mining.

Abstract:In order to address the challenges of high gas outburst in both the adjacent layers and the coal seam itself faced by large mining faces, a study on the three-dimensional extraction of gas from different sources at a large mining face was conducted. Based on the research on the instability and failure characteristics of the overlying strata during mining and the gas outburst characteristics at the large mining face, a source-separated three-dimensional gas extraction system was established. A comprehensive gas management model for the large mining face, involving the extraction of gas from different sources, has been proposed. This model is suitable for gas management at large mining faces where there is a high gas emission in the adjacent layers and a complex structure of the coal seam. Through numerical simulations using FLAC3D, the height of the "three zones" of the overlying strata and the range of the floor fracture zone at the large mining face were obtained, providing guidance for the layout of high-level drainage roadway, low-level drainage roadway, and floor drainage roadways. Following the coordinated layout of high-level drainage roadway, inclined high-level drainage roadway, and low-level drainage roadway, the reasonable optimization of gas extraction techniques in the coal seam, and the reasonable arrangement of floor rock predrainage roadways, the methane capture efficiency of the large 15115 mining face reached 87.5%. The methane concentrations at the upper corner and in the return airflow being below 0.8%. The methane concentration extracted from the coal seam boreholes is 2.9 times higher than that from the ordinary mining face after adopting "ordinary boreholes + large-diameter boreholes". This gas management model effectively addresses the gas-related challenges of the large mining face and improves the gas extraction rate, achieving harmonious mining and extraction of coal and methane.

Abstract:To prevent the gas over limit in the upper corner of the 215101 working face of the Yue Nan coal mine, a numerical simulation method was used to analyze the gas concentration in the upper corner of the working face at different air intake volumes and mining velocities. The research results show that the gas concentration in the upper corner is 0.78, 0.52, 0.39, and 0.32% when the wind speed of the intake airflow roadway is 1, 1.5, 2, and 2.5 m/s, respectively, and an optimal wind speed of the intake airflow roadway is selected as 2 m/s. When the wind speed of the intake airflow roadway is 2 m/s, the working face mining velocity is 1, 2, 3, and 4 m/d, and the gas concentration in the upper corner is 0.27, 0.39, 0.58, and 0.83%, respectively, and an optimal working face mining velocity of 3 m/d is selected. Under the optimal mining conditions, the working face wind leakage area is divided, with 0∼30 m of the working face as the main leakage area and 150-180 m as the wind flow compensation area. According to the wind speed in the gob, the wind flow disturbance area is divided, the gob 0-50 m is the wind flow intense disturbance area, which is the main area of the upper corner gas source; the gob 50-62 m is the wind flow medium disturbance area, which is the secondary area of the upper corner gas source; the gob 62-75 m is the slight disturbance area, which has less influence on the upper corner gas concentration; the gob after 75 m is the wind flow undisturbed area, and the upper corner gas concentration is almost unaffected by it.

Abstract:The overrunning disaster of harmful gas tends to occur in the working face in thick coal seam with high gas concentration, as the fully mechanized caving stope has the characteristics of high mining intensity, high remnant coal, and high gas content. Therefore, the disastrous mechanism and concentration distribution of gas migration in fully mechanized caving stope are the theoretical basis for gas control scheme. Based on the 7607 working face in Wuyang coal mine, the gas emission quantity in working face is comprehensively analyzed by field measurement in this paper. The gas leakage field, oxygen concentration field, and gas concentration field in 7607 working face are simulated by establishing the equal proportional numerical model. Due to the increase of air leakage in working face caused by the high alley pumping drainage, the risk of coal spontaneous combustion is also analyzed, when gas extraction in goaf is carried out. The research results show that the gas drainage technology in high drainage roadway has a remarkable effect on the gas overrunning phenomenon. The gas concentration near the upper corner of the working surface has been reduced from 0.7%-1% to 0.5%. At the same time, it is necessary to pay attention to the risk of coal spontaneous combustion in the goaf for gas drainage in the high drainage roadway. The width of the oxidation zone in the goaf is about 25 m deeper than that before the drainage. Research results provide the references for gas control technology and coal spontaneous combustion prevention in similar working faces.

Abstract:Gas disasters are more prominent in complex coal conditions, especially for the close distance coal seam mining that the gas control in the upper corner of the return airflow roadway in lower coal seam has seriously restricted the safe production of coal mine. In this study, taking Anshun coal mine as engineering background, the accumulation law of large amounts of gas in the goaf in the low-medium positions of overburden fracturation zone is revealed after considering the desorption of the residual coal in the goaf and the gas emission from the upper adjacent layer through comprehensively research methods including geophysical survey, porous medium seepage theory and numerical simulation. The directional drilling is proposed to control gas, and the influence of drilling layer, extraction negative pressure and horizontal distance of directional drilling on gas migration in goaf is analyzed to optimize the precision extraction scheme. Finally, the optimization gas extraction scheme is adopted on filed applications. The results show that the gas concentration in the upper corner of the return airflow roadway can reduce to less than 0.4% meeting the requirements of safe mining when the extraction negative pressure is 12.5 kPa, the borehole is arranged in the carbonaceous clay rock with the horizontal distance of 10 m from the return airflow roadway and the height of 12 m from the coal seam. The gas extraction scheme is of great theoretical and practical significant for the similar conditions of close distance coal seam safety mining.

Abstract:Gas drainage is the main technical measure to prevent and control coal and gas disasters. Reasonable extraction parameters can improve extraction efficiency and reduce the risk of gas accidents. In order to further study the influence of extraction parameters on gas drainage effect, this paper combines COMSOL Multiphysics numerical simulation and field experiment to optimize the two parameters of intubation spacing and extraction negative pressure in goaf of 42,201 working face in Buertai Coal Mine, Inner Mongolia. The three-dimensional gas distribution model in goaf was established, and the COMSOL numerical simulation software was used for calculation. Combined with the field experiment, the influence of intubation spacing and extraction negative pressure on the extraction effect was obtained. The results show that in the range of 50 m-70 m, the drainage effect is ideal when the negative pressure is 12–18 kPa.

Abstract:<p>Protective seam mining is one of the most commonly used technique to realize stress relief and permeability enhancement of reservoirs, so as to improve gas drainage efficiency. However, for coal reservoir with a hard roof, such as the tight sandstone, magmatic rocks, the distribution and evolution of destressed zone and gas field have not been fully understood, which leads to an inefficient gas control in the field. In this work, taking the geological background of Pingmei 12<sup>th</sup> Coal Mine as an example, we numerically investigated the evolution and distribution of stress, permeability and gas field in the hard-roof stope during protective seam mining. The results show that in the zone with a distance greater than 3.7 m, stress in the hard-roof stope is significantly higher than that in the conventional stope and the permeability enhancement ratio in the hard-roof stope is significantly lower than that in the conventional stope. In the overlying strata, the existence of the hard roof inhibits the upward extension of the fractured zone, and the range of the fractured zone in the hard-roof stope is obviously smaller than that in the conventional stope. Therefore, in the hard-roof stope, the relieved gas accumulates in the gob, instead of entering the overlying fractured zone, which may put a threat to the mining safety. To solve this problem, the presplitting blasting technique was applied to cut the hard roof. After the collapse of the hard roof, the overlying fractured zone is fully developed, and the gas accumulated in the gob enters the fractured zone driven by the concentration difference and buoyancy. This can not only prevent gas overrun, but improve gas drainage efficiency of the upward borehole. This practice could be used as a valuable example for other coal mines with similar geological conditions.</p>

Abstract:When mining high-rank coals with strong adsorption and weak desorption, the fully mechanized mining face of a thick coal seam under full-seam mining may encounter broken coal, surrounding rock and instantaneous release of large amounts of gas into the mining space from adjacent coal seams due to mining stress relief, which is extremely likely to cause gas overrun accidents at the working face. At present, the major gas control method adopted to solve this problem is the directional drainage of the fractured zone in the mining area through a roof extraction roadway (RER). However, the drainage effect is closely related to its horizontal distance from the return airway and its vertical distance from the coal seam roof. Based on the analysis of fracture characteristics in different areas of the overlying strata above the gob, this paper elaborates the extraction mechanism of RER, and employs three methods: RER at different positions, directional long borehole on roof (RDLB) at different horizontal and vertical positions, and numerical simulation of the stress release effect of the overlying rock, to investigate the gas drainage effect in mining area. A method to determine the best drainage location in the gob based on the stress release ratio of the overlying rock is proposed. The results show that either RERs or RDLBs work to conduct directional drainage in the mining area; the best position is 25 m from the return airway of the mining face horizontally and 50–55 m from the coal seam roof vertically. The research methods provide insight for later studies concerning highly gassy mines and coal and gas outburst mines. Moreover, the research results serve as guidance for other mines with similar mining conditions.

Comprehensive Control of Spontaneous Combustion of Gas and Coal for High Gas-containing Seam by Fully Mechanized Mining Technology

Abstract:C 13 coal seam of Pansan mine of Huainan Mining Group Corp. has the property of low permeability and high gas-containing and easy to spontaneous combustion. In order to realize safe mining by fully mechanized top-coal caving technology, the comprehensive control measures, gas drainage with strike long horizontal holes in stress-relief roof, gas drainage with bedding bores by using the mining stress-relief characteristic, gas drainage and discharge by tail airway, pressure-equalizing adjust of working face ventilation system timely, distributing air flow volume of working face reasonably, controlling air leakage in gob area and so on, had been implemented based on the affecting factors analyses of gas and coal spontaneous combustion control. By means of above measures, the gas problems in mining of fully mechanized top-coal caving working face had been settled and coal spontaneous combustion in gob area had been effectively controlled. Therefore, the mining movement velocity of the working face had been evaluated obviously. The experimental results showed that gas drainage with strike long horizontal holes in stress-relief roof was proved to be effective in settling the low gas drainage rate of coal seams with low permeability. The gas drainage rate was over 30%, and gas drainage and discharge by tail airway was an effective assistant measure, which had some effect on coal spontaneous combustion in the gob area. The key factors were the mixed flow passing the gob area. The results might provide an important reference for mining safety to other analogical mechanized top-coal caving coal seams which have high gas content and are prone to spontaneous combustion.
Study on Gas Emission Characteristics in Lower Stress-relief Coal Seam for Improving Mining Safety of Extremely-close Upper Seam: Implementation of Coupled Permeability Model

Abstract:Abstract In two extremely close coal seams, when the upper coal seam being first mined, large amount of gas normally emits into the mining area from lower stress-relief seam. This is a significant safety issue which may lead to gas-related incidents. In this paper, a coupled permeability model was developed. Then COMSOL Multiphysics numerical simulation was conducted to study multi-factor coupling gas emission flow characteristics. Furthermore, effects of coal stress, gas pressure and initial coal permeability on gas pressure change in lower stress-relief coal seam was analysed. The numerical model established is based on a real case of Ji15 coal seam and Ji16-17 coal seam in Pingdingshan No. 8 coalmine, China. Results show that after upper seam (Ji15 coal seam) being mined, the closer to bottom of working face, the lower the gas pressure because of increasing gas emission performance. As the distance from floor of working face increases, gas pressure becomes closer to its original value. Meanwhile, due to gas emission, gas pressure drop in lower stress-relief coal seam (Ji16-17 coal seam) is symmetrical from the middle of mining face to two ends. Along the parallel direction of mining face, gas pressure curve is approximately in “W”-shape, with gas pressure at both ends tends to be original. From two working face ends to the middle, gas pressure first decreases before increasing, with a maximum decrease of 9.36%. Furthermore, coal stress, gas pressure and initial coal permeability are all positively correlated with gas pressure decrease. Significance of initial coal permeability’s effect is higher than the other two factors. Above results could provide references on drainage borehole design for related scholars and on-site engineers, which is of significance for improving mining safety.
Methane Drainage Experimental Research for the Stress-Relief Roof Stratum of Working Face of High Gas Coal Seam

Abstract:A solution to the low gas drainage efficiency for lower-permeability gas-filled coal in China is suggested based on the theoretical analysis and model investigation of the stress-relief moving rules for the roof stratum during working. With this method, the gas is drained from the roof stratum with a strike long-distance drill according to the developing characteristics of the cracks resulting from the stress relief of the mining roof stratum. The contribution of the roof stratum structure and the horizon of the key seam to the displacing rules of the roof stratum is analyzed, and the proper zone for the strike long-distance drainage is provided. Judged from the practical experience, the strike long-distance drainage in the roof stratum, with a drainage percentage of 20% for working face, is an ideal method for the coal seam with lower permeability.
Parameter Optimization and Application of Gas Extraction Technology by Buried Pipes in Goaf of Multi-roadway U-type Working Face

Abstract:The gas extraction method by buried pipes in closed connection roadways of goaf was proposed. It was intended to solve large gas emission quantity and over-limit gas concentration at the upper corner in the goaf of highly gassy mine. The study object was 81307 fully mechanized mining face in Baode Coal Mine. The gas distribution characteristics in the goaf during no extraction and those during gas extraction by buried pipes under different extraction parameters were numerically simulated via COMSOL Multiphysics, and the best layout parameters of buried pipes in the goaf were determined. A field optimization experiment was carried out for the extraction parameters. Results showed that the extraction measure by buried pipes could effectively solve the aforementioned over-limit gas concentration at the upper corner when the layout spacing of closed connection roadways was 100 m, extraction pressure was −32 kPa, diameter of extraction pipe was 800 mm, and extraction flow was 600 m 3 /min. During the experiment, the average gas concentration at the upper corner was 0.38% and that in the return airway was 0.29%. Both of which were lower than the national safety standard, thus reaching the goal of safety production.

Abstract:Mine gas disasters are a major safety concern in underground coal mining. Protective layer mining is widely used in gas disaster control, but there are limited theoretical and experimental results that can provide guidance for site-specific mining circumstances. Taking the Xinji No. 1 mine as an example, gas disaster treatments were conducted in a new panel with overlying goaf located 85 m above the coal mine and adjacent goaf located at 30 m intervals. This study involved a comprehensive investigation, which included four steps: the selection of the first mining face, gas control and prevention, tracking and investigation, and effect analysis and assessment. The safety strategy focused on gas control planning in new mining areas or panels. The distribution and evolution characteristics of the stress, the gas permeability coefficient and the deformation volume within the protected layer were determined by numerical simulation. The coal deformation, gas emission and extraction effect were analyzed by field observation. The deformation and gas permeability of the coal seam were consistent with the stress evolution, for which the maximum compressional and expansional deformation of 6-1 coal were 18‰ and 28‰, respectively. Gas disaster control and prevention treatment of the mining face produced a significant protective effect on the underlying No. 6-1 coal seam. This work is beneficial for the planning of gas control in successive panels.

Gas Distribution Mechanism in Goaf during Combined Drainage of Upper Corner Buried Pipeline and Intubation for Thick Coal Seams

Abstract:Abstract The prevention of gas overrun in the panel is one of the key issues on green mining. In this paper, a physical goaf model was established based on the geological production conditions of a coal seam in a coal mine in Henan Province, and the combined drainage technology by burying and spilling pipeline in the upper corner was proposed. The Fluent software was used to simulate the changes of gas mass fraction and flow field distribution when the gas is extracted from the goaf without the gas pipeline, with a single buried pipeline, and with the combination of buried and spilled pipelines. Analysis and simulation showed that in the absence of drainage pipelines, the gas concentrations in both the return airway and the upper corner are up to 1.2%, which failed to meet the gas prevention and control standard on the mine. In the case of gas drainage with a single buried pipeline, the average gas concentration in the return airway was 0.7%, and only the gas concentration in the upper corner was up to 1.1%, which failed to meet the gas control standards on the mine’s panel. However, the maximum gas concentration in the combined drainage was reduced from 1.1% to 0.6%, which indicates that the technology can greatly reduce gas concentration, but there is still a gap from the mine’s gas control standard. Therefore, the impacts of the lengths of pipelines buried in different goafs on the gas drainage effect in the goaf were studied, and it was concluded that the reasonable length of pipelines buried in the goaf under the geological conditions was 20 m. This technology not only solves the problem of gas overrun in the panel but also realizes the utilization of gas resources in the goaf. Prevention Technology of Coal Spontaneous Combustion Induced by Gas Drainage in Deep Coal Seam Mining

Abstract:Due to high gas content and a low permeability coefficient in deep coal seam mining, the spontaneous combustion of coal around the wellbore can easily occur, leading to difficulties in extracting gas during the mining process. To determine the dangerous area around the borehole and conduct advanced prevention and control measures are the keys to preventing spontaneous combustion in boreholes. However, the dangerous area around the borehole is not clear, the sealing parameters lack scientific basis, and the key prevention and control measures are not clear, which have caused great harm to coal mines. This study took the 24,130 working face of Pingdingshan No. 10 Mine as an example, using numerical simulation, theoretical analysis, and field tests to classify the risks of studying the surrounding area of the wellbore. The dangerous area variations under different lengths of shotcrete in the roadway were analyzed, the optimal plugging parameters were studied, and the current “two plugs and one injection” plugging device was optimized. Based on the oxygen concentration and air leakage rate, a method was proposed to divide the dangerous area of fissure coal spontaneous combustion around the borehole induced by gas extraction. The dangerous area of spontaneous combustion around the borehole was defined as having an oxygen concentration larger than 7% and an air leakage rate less than 0.004 m/s. The comprehensive control measures of the grouting length at 2–4 m, hole-sealing parameter at 20-13 (hole-sealing depth 20 m, hole-sealing length 13 m) and the “two plugs, one injection and one row” device were determined.

Abstract:Force and displacement cloud map of localized profile. As coal mining depth increases, there is a corresponding increase in both ground stress and gas pressure, leading to a higher incidence of coal and gas outburst accidents. To investigate the stress distribution law and gas release degree of the adjacent coal body within the goaf of the outburst coal seam, and to acquire an understanding of the impact range of the large mining face goaf on the stress of the coal seam, this study employed theoretical analysis and numerical simulation to analyze the impact and scope of the goaf on the adjacent coal body, and measured the gas content of the coal seam. The findings indicated that following the completion of mining on the working face, there was a redistribution of stress in the coal and rock layers within 40 m of the goaf, with the stress concentration phenomenon observed at a distance of 2.6 m from the goaf. Affected by the stress relief effect of mining, the stress, gas content, and other related factors have been studied in detail by researchers. Affected by the stress relief effect of mining, the stress, gas content, and gas pressure of the surrounding rock near the goaf in the coal seam are significantly reduced. The research results verify that tunneling along the goaf is an effective method to prevent coal and gas outbursts and improve stoping efficiency.
