Abstract:Grid shells have been widely used in various long-span public buildings, and many of them are defined over freeform surfaces with complex boundaries. This emphasizes the importance of general and digitalised grid generation and optimization methods in the initial design stage to achieve visually sound grid shells. In this paper, a framework is presented for the development of a digital tool and to generate regular and fluent grids for structural design over free-form surfaces, especially those with complex boundaries. Both triangular and quadrilateral grid generation are addressed. To generate regular and fluent grids for free-form surfaces, a simple yet practical framework is proposed based on a spring-mass model. Firstly, an initial casual quadrilateral grid is tiled on the surface based on surface discretization and mesh parameterization. Secondly, the distribution of the initial grid vertices is adjusted by a dynamic relaxation procedure, assuming the grid as a spring-mass system. Thirdly, the grid vertices corresponding to the adjusted particles in the equilibrium state are then reconnected to produce a grid with a predefined pattern (triangular or quadrilateral). Finally, the generated grid is relaxed with the spring-mass model, alongside additional geometric operations including grid size adjustment and filtering techniques, to further improve the grid regularity and fluency. As part of its contribution, this paper also broadens the application scope of the fluency index, which can be used to quantitatively evaluate the suitability of a given triangular or quadrilateral grid for architectural and structural expression. Examples are presented and show that the proposed framework is effective for the triangular and quadrilateral grid generation over various surfaces and to optimize the resulted grids along complex boundaries. The method proposed can be useful for rapid design and performance evaluation of free-form grid structures.
A Triangular Grid Generation and Optimization Framework for the Design of Free-Form Gridshells

The framework employs force-based algorithms and a connectivity-regularization algorithm to optimize grid quality. First, an appropriate distribution of internal points is randomly generated on the surface. Secondly, a bubble-packing method is employed to increase the uniformity of the initial point distribution, and the points are connected using Delaunay-based triangularization to produce an initial grid with rods of balanced length. Thirdly, the grid connectivity is optimized using a range of edge-operations including edge-flip, collapse and split. The optimization process features a grid relaxation objective which includes the degree of the vertices, leading to improved regularity. As a final step, the grid is relaxed to improve fluency using a net-like method. As part of its contribution, this paper, therefore, proposes a metric for fluency, which can be used to quantitatively evaluate the suitability of a given grid for architectural and structural expression. Two case-study examples are presented to demonstrate the effective execution of the grid generation and optimization framework. It is shown that by using the proposed framework, the fluency index of the grid can be improved by up to 157%.

Abstract:Grid computing technology is a focused field in high performance computing. This paper describes an engineering computation oriented visual grid framework VGrid, which is capable to bridge the gap between currently deployed grid services and the computational applications. Based on the Globus toolkit, and coupled with a client component, a services pool and a server component, VGrid visually performs resource discovery, task schedule, and result processing. VGrid improves the efficiency of utilization of resources by introducing a logical resource concept. VGrid applications of numerical simulations in engineering sciences are demonstrated.
Triangulated irregular network based chunk gridding algorithm for terrain rendering

Abstract:A triangulated irregular network (TIN) based chunk gridding algorithm for terrain rendering was presented considering the topological flexibility of TINs. The classic chunked level-of-detail (LOD) codes are mainly based on gridding algorithms of semi-regular triangular network (SRN) and easily produces redundant vertices. The new algorithm can create TIN without redundant vertices based on the Delaunay mesh generation procedure. The mechanism of redundant vertex creation of classic algorithms was pointed out after the review on the framework of the terrain rendering algorithm and the SRN based chunk gridding algorithm. Then the TIN based chunk gridding algorithm was discussed, with emphasis on the algorithm and its robustness of Delaunay mesh generation based on the Bowyer-Watson incremental point insertion technique, and the stripping algorithm of TINs was also addressed. Results show that the algorithm can greatly decrease the grid scale about 30% in typical numerical experiments, thus decreases the interim file sizes and improves the efficiency of subsequent terrain rendering.

Abstract:Although research on the discrete global grid systems (DGGSs) has become an essential issue in the era of big earth data, there is still a gap between the efficiency of current encoding and operation schemes for hexagonal DGGSs and the needs of practical applications. This paper proposes a novel and efficient encoding and operation scheme of an optimized hexagonal quadtree structure (OHQS) based on aperture 4 hexagonal discrete global grid systems by translation transformation. A vector model is established to describe and calculate the aperture 4 hexagonal grid system. This paper also provides two different grid code addition algorithms based on induction and ijk coordinate transformation. We implement the transformation between OHQS codes and geographic coordinates through the ij , ijk and IJK coordinate systems. Compared with existing schemes, the scheme in this paper greatly improves the efficiency of the addition operation, neighborhood retrieval and coordinate transformation, and the coding is more concise than other aperture 4 hexagonal DGGSs. The encoding operation based on the ijk coordinate system is faster than the encoding operation based on the induction and addition table. Spatial modeling based OHQS DGGSs are also provided. A case study with rainstorms demonstrated the availability of this scheme.

Abstract:Abstract. Compared with regular quadrilateral grid, regular hexagonal grid is isotropy and has higher cell compactness and sampling density. This gives regular hexagonal grid advantages in visual display, spatial analysis, and many other aspects. However, the studies of raster data mainly focus on regular quadrilateral grid, and various encoding methods are also focused on it. The researches on hexagonal raster data are relatively insufficient.In this paper, encoding and compression for regular hexagonal grid are studied. By introducing Gosper curve which has good spatial aggregation and takes into account the morphological structure of regular hexagonal grid, the bidirectional correlation between Gosper curve and regular hexagonal grid is established. Then, a new encoding framework is built to determine the Gosper coding of each grid unit. The lossless compression is completed by performing run-length coding on adjacent coding sets in the target region.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new 3D hex mesh visual analysis system that emphasizes poor-quality areas with an aggregated glyph, highlights overlapping elements, and provides detailed boundary error inspection in three forms. By supporting multi-level analysis through multiple views, our system effectively evaluates various mesh models and compares the performance of mesh generation and optimization algorithms for hexahedral meshes.

Abstract:Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGSs) are hierarchical frameworks that provide seamless global coverage and enable the efficient processing and analysis of heterogeneous geospatial data. As cell resolution becomes finer, similarities in cell attributes, such as cell size and shape, increase. Understanding these shared characteristics enhances our knowledge of DGGSs structures, improving their reliability and accuracy across a range of applications. However, existing methods for quantifying these characteristics are limited, often emphasizing overall analysis and visualization rather than detailed assessment. This paper introduces a geometric pattern quantification method for equal-area hexagonal DGGSs by calculating inter-level attribute similarities to identify a reference level, segmenting the spatial distribution image at this reference level, and fitting the boundaries of these sub-images to create iso-feature lines. The results show that this method improves the accuracy and efficiency of cell attribute calculations, with enhancements of at least 5.6 times for study regions and 13.8 times for sample points at lower levels. This pattern provides a robust basis for grid selection and optimization in regional applications, promoting the broader adoption of DGGSs across various fields.

In real printing thereasily exists moire because of regular gridding module.Trying many methods,people can't completely avoid moire.The printing CAD system contains a new method of considering hexagon-based seven circles as a basic halftone grid. Because of the speciality of seven centers of circle,it can not create regular line in any directs.Then it overcomes dependence of regular gridding on images itself.

Abstract:A 2D grid subdivision algorithm based on C 2 is given. Although using the segmentation ways of 3 order B Spline curve and surface, it has been applied successfully in several system owing to compute much easily and effect precision. Especially, in the garment effect simulation CAD(CGASD) it resolves piece subdivision and texture mapping which is the most complicated problem and difficult to present drape, shade and lop affect. With advanced rapidly CGASD, the shortcut, exact and consecutive algorithm has commercial value.
An efficient hexagonal image framework using pseudo hexagonal pixel for computer vision applications

Abstract:Nature-inspired computing has been a real source of motivation for the development of many meta-heuristic algorithms. The biological optic system can be patterned as a cascade of sub-filters from the photoreceptors over the ganglion cells in the fovea to some simple cells in the visual cortex. This spark has inspired many researchers to examine the biological retina in order to learn more about information processing capabilities. The photoreceptor cones and rods in the human fovea resemble hexagon more than a rectangular structure. However, the hexagonal meshes provide higher packing density, consistent neighborhood connectivity, and better angular correction compared to the rectilinear square mesh. In this paper, a novel 2-D interpolation hexagonal lattice conversion algorithm has been proposed to develop an efficient hexagonal mesh framework for computer vision applications. The proposed algorithm comprises effective pseudo-hexagonal structures which guarantee to keep align with our human visual system. It provides the hexagonal simulated images to visually verify without using any hexagonal capture or display device. The simulation results manifest that the proposed algorithm achieves a higher Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio of 98.45 and offers a high-resolution image with a lesser mean square error of 0.59.

Abstract:Discrete Global Grid Systems (DGGSs) are an emerging Earth reference model that support the integration and analysis of remote sensing (RS) data. Grid modeling, sampling, quantization, and storage are the key points and difficulties of DGGS. The Icosahedral Snyder Equal-area Aperture-4 Hexagonal DGGS was introduced as the basic framework to improve the geospace sampling efficiency. We presented an approach for precise hexagonal pixel modeling and an easy-sharing storage scheme compatible with open-standard formats for RS images based on the DGGS. Firstly, the proposed interpolation is computed by overlaps between quadrilateral and hexagonal pixels. The hexagonal grids were then mapped onto the icosahedral surface, and a strict correspondence between hexagonal and rectangular pixels is established. The open-standard formats were used to accurately store the hexagonal attribute values and metadata. Finally, a multiscale hexagonal aggregation algorithm based on the dataset was designed. Experiments showed that the proposed modeling methodology had a higher accuracy and smaller errors. The hexagonal data can be stored as regular rectangles with a fixed pattern in any standard format. This storage scheme was more conducive to data processing and sharing compared to SMOS, which was expected to promote hexagonal DGGS in RS data organization, processing and sharing.

Abstract:Diffractive optical elements (DOEs) have widespread applications in optics, ranging from point spread function engineering to holographic display. Conventionally, DOE design relies on Cartesian simulation grids, resulting in square features in the final design. Unfortunately, Cartesian grids provide an anisotropic sampling of the plane, and the resulting square features can be challenging to fabricate with high fidelity using methods such as photolithography. To address these limitations, we explore the use of hexagonal grids as a new grid structure for DOE design and fabrication. In this study, we demonstrate wave propagation simulation using an efficient hexagonal coordinate system and compare simulation accuracy with the standard Cartesian sampling scheme. Additionally, we have implemented algorithms for the inverse DOE design. The resulting hexagonal DOEs, encoded with wavefront information for holograms, are fabricated and experimentally compared to their Cartesian counterparts. Our findings indicate that employing hexagonal grids enhances holographic imaging quality. The exploration of new grid structures holds significant potential for advancing optical technology across various domains, including imaging, microscopy, photography, lighting, and virtual reality.

Abstract:Hexagonal structure is another image structure alternative to traditional square image structure for image processing and computer vision. The geometrical arrangement of pixels on a hexagonal structure can be described as a collection of hexagonal pixels. Because all the existing hardware for capturing image and for displaying image are produced based on square structure, it becomes important to find a proper software approach to mimic hexagonal structure so that images represented on the traditional square structure can be smoothly converted from or to the images on hexagonal structure. For accurate image processing, it is critical to best maintain the image resolution during the image conversion. In this paper, a bilinear interpolation algorithm that is used to convert an image from square structure to hexagonal structure is presented. Based on this, an edge detection method is proposed. Our experimental results show that the bilinear interpolation improves the edge detection accuracy.
Automatic Frame Field Guided Hexahedral Mesh Generation

Abstract:We present a hexahedralization method based on a systematic treatment that eradicates the singularities that would lead to degeneration in the volumetric parameterization. Such singularities could be abundant in automatically generated frame fields guiding the interior and boundary layouts of the hexahedra in a purely hexahedral mesh. We first give the mathematical definitions of different types of surface singularities, which are involved in making the surface of the output hexahedral mesh conform to the input model while optimizing mesh quality. We then give a practical framework for adjusting singularity graphs by automatically modifying the rotational transition of frames between charts (cells of a tetrahedral mesh for the volume) to resolve the issues detected in the internal and boundary singularity graph. After applying an additional re-smoothing of the frame field with the modified transition conditions, we cut the volume into a domain with a sphere-like topology automatically, by combining the tetrahedra. Finally, we efficiently solve a mixed integer problem on this domain for a global parameterization, which follows the frame field and respects the transitions across the chart boundaries, and creates a properly connected hexahedral mesh using integer grids of the parameterization.
ADAPTIVE LAYERED CARTESIAN CUT CELL METHOD FOR THE UNSTRUCTURED HEXAHEDRAL GRIDS GENERATION

Abstract:Adaptive layered Cartesian cut cell method is presented to solve the difficulty of the unstructured hexahedral anisotropic Cartesian grids generation from the complex CAD model. Vertex merging algorithm based on relaxed AVL tree is investigated to construct topological structure for stereo lithography (STL) files,and a topology-based self-adaptive layered slicing algorithm with special features control strategy is brought forward. With the help of convex hull,a new points-in-polygon method is employed to improve the Cartesian cut cell method. By integrating the self-adaptive layered slicing algorithm and the improved Cartesian cut cell method,the adaptive layered Cartesian cut cell method gains the volume data of the complex CAD model in STL file and generates the unstructured hexahedral anisotropic Cartesian grids.
A GPU-Based Integration Method from Raster Data to a Hexagonal Discrete Global Grid

Abstract:This paper proposes an algorithm for the conversion of raster data to hexagonal DGGSs in the GPU by redevising the encoding and decoding mechanisms. The researchers first designed a data structure based on rhombic tiles to convert the hexagonal DGGS to a texture format acceptable for GPUs, thus avoiding the irregularity of the hexagonal DGGS. Then, the encoding and decoding methods of the tile data based on space-filling curves were designed, respectively, so as to reduce the amount of data transmission from the CPU to the GPU. Finally, the researchers improved the algorithmic efficiency through thread design. To validate the above design, raster integration experiments were conducted based on the global Aster 30 m digital elevation dataDEM, and the experimental results showed that the raster integration accuracy of this algorithms was around 1 m, while its efficiency could be improved to more than 600 times that of the algorithm for integrating the raster data to the hexagonal DGGS data, executed in the CPU. Therefore, the researchers believe that this study will provide a feasible method for the efficient and stable integration of massive raster data based on a hexagonal grid, which may well support the organization of massive raster data in the field of GIS.

Abstract:Global discrete grid system will subdivide the earth recursively to form a multi-resolution grid hierarchy with no Overlap and seamless which help build global uniform spatial reference datum and multi-source data processing mode which takes the position as the object and in the aspect of data structure supports the organization, process and analysis of the remote sensing big data. This paper adopts the base transform to realize the mutual transformation of square pixel and hexagonal pixel. This paper designs the corresponding discrete Fourier transform algorithm for any lattice. Finally, the paper show the result of the DFT of the remote sensing image of the hexagonal pixel.
