Abstract:Classical logic is not adequate to face the essential vagueness of human reasoning, which is approximate rather than precise in nature. The logical treatment of the concepts of vagueness and approximation is of increasing importance in artificial intelligence and related research. Consequently, many logicians have proposed different systems of many-valued logic as a formalization of approximate reasoning (see, for example, Goguen [G], Gerla and Tortora [GT], Novak [No], Pavelka [P], and Takeuti and Titani [TT]). As far as we know, all the proposals are obtained by extending the range of truth values of propositions. In these logical systems reasoning is still exact and to make a conclusion the antecedent clause of its rule must match its premise exactly. In addition. Wang [W] pointed out: “If we compare calculation with proving,... Procedures of calculation... can be made so by fairly well-developed methods of approximation; whereas... we do not have a clear conception of approximate methods in theorem proving.... The concept of approximate proofs, though undeniably of another kind than approximations in numerical calculations, is not incapable of more exact formulation in terms of, say, sketches of and gradual improvements toward a correct proof” (see pp, 224–225). As far as the author is aware, however, no attempts have been made to give a conception of approximate methods in theorem proving. The purpose of this paper is. unlike all the previous proposals, to develop a propositional calculus, a predicate calculus in which the truth values of propositions are still true or false exactly and in which the reasoning may be approximate and allow the antecedent clause of a rule to match its premise only approximately. In a forthcoming paper we shall establish set theory, based on the logic introduced here, in which there are ∣ L ∣ binary predicates ∈ λ , λ ∈ L such that R (∈, ∈ λ ) = λ where ∈ stands for ∈ 1 and 1 is the greatest element in L , and x ∈ λ y is interpreted as that x belongs to y in the degree of λ , and relate it to intuitionistic fuzzy set theory of Takeuti and Titani [TT] and intuitionistic modal set theory of Lano [ L ]. In another forthcoming paper we shall introduce the resolution principle under approximate match and illustrate its applications in production systems of artificial intelligence.

Abstract:The fuzzy reasoning system contains more information than its form-generalized modus ponens (GMP), So it's hard to use GMP as a formal deduction rule directly. In this paper we represent these vague and fuzzy information as relations on concepts, we view rules of fuzzy reasoning system as a mapping from the set of antecedents to the set of consequents, and this mapping holds some relations on antecedents and consequents. Given a premise, we use a extension of the mapping as deduction rule, and this extension holds the relations on the set of antecedents and the set of consequents locally. This reasoning method can be employed to many case that fuzzy reasoning is applied. We propose a vague knowledge representation framework called pattern classes, and have discussed some useful concept about vague knowledge representation and reasoning. To some extent, representing fuzzy information as relations on concepts is an orthogonal representation method comparing with fuzzy sets. In many cases this reasoning method can deal with fuzziness without using fuzzy sets theory. It indicates a probability to employ GMP to a formal logic system.

In the frameworks of type-I strong topological logics, we present the type-I topological algorithm of multidimensional approximate reasoning and multiple multidimensional approximate reasoning. We study the type-I completeness and type-I perfection of the knowledge library in the framework of topological logical frameworks. We construct the type-I knowledge universe and prove that the second class knowledge universe of type-I is coincident with the first class knowledge universe of type-I, therefore the type-I knowledge universe is stable. We construct a self-extensive type-I knowledge library and the type-I expert system. In this expert system, the new approximate knowledge acquired by the self-extensive type-I knowledge library K-I will not beyond the type-I approximate knowledge closure, (K-0)(-), of the initial knowledge library K-0. Therefore, the precision of all new acquired approximate knowledge of this automatic reasoning system will be controlled well by the type-I approximate knowledge closure (K-0)(-) of the initial knowledge library K-0.

Abstract:The connection between similarity logic and the theory of closure operators is examined. Indeed one proves that the consequence relation defined in [14] can be obtained by composing two closure operators and that the resulting operator is still a closure operator. Abstract:We study approximate equivalence relations up to commensurability, in the presence of a definable measure. As a basic framework, we give a presentation of probability logic based on continuous logic. Hoover's normal form is valid here; if one begins with a discrete logic structure, it reduces arbitrary formulas of probability logic to correlations between quantifier-free formulas. We completely classify binary correlations in terms of the Kim-Pillay space, leading to strong results on the interpretative power of pure probability logic over a binary language. Assuming higher amalgamation of independent types, we prove a higher stationarity statement for such correlations. We also give a short model-theoretic proof of a categoricity theorem for continuous logic structures with a measure of full support, generalizing theorems of Gromov-Vershik and Keisler, and often providing a canonical model for a complete pure probability logic theory. These results also apply to local probability logic, providing in particular a canonical model for a local pure probability logic theory with a unique 1-type and geodesic metric. For sequences of approximate equivalence relations with an 'approximately unique' probability logic 1-type, we obtain a structure theorem generalizing the `Lie model' theorem for approximate subgroups. The models here are Riemannian homogeneous spaces, fibered over a locally finite graph. Specializing to definable graphs over finite fields, we show that after a finite partition, a definable binary relation converges in finitely many self-compositions to an equivalence relation of geometric origin. For NIP theories, pursuing a question of Pillay's, we prove an archimedean finite-dimensionality statement for the automorphism groups of definable measures, acting on a given type of definable sets.

Abstract:To strengthen the effectiveness of approximate reasoning in fuzzy modus ponens (FMP) and fuzzy modus tollens (FMT) problems, three approximate reasoning schemes with aggregation functions are developed and their validity is respectively investigated in this paper. We firstly study some properties of fuzzy implication generated by aggregation function. And then present an $A$-compositional rule of inference (ACRI) as an extension of Zadeh's CRI replacing $t$-norm by an aggregation function. The similarity-based approximate reasoning with aggregation functions is further discussed. Moreover, we provide the quintuple implication principle (QIP) method with aggregation functions to solve FMP and FMT problems. Finally, the validity of our proposed three approximate reasoning approaches is respectively analyzed using GMP rules in detail.

Abstract:Approximation Fixpoint Theory (AFT) and Justification Theory (JT) are two frameworks to unify logical formalisms. AFT studies semantics in terms of fixpoints of lattice operators, and JT in terms of so-called justifications, which are explanations of why certain facts do or do not hold in a model. While the approaches differ, the frameworks were designed with similar goals in mind, namely to study the different semantics that arise in (mainly) non-monotonic logics. The first contribution of our current paper is to provide a formal link between the two frameworks. To be precise, we show that every justification frame induces an approximator and that this mapping from JT to AFT preserves all major semantics. The second contribution exploits this correspondence to extend JT with a novel class of semantics, namely ultimate semantics : we formally show that ultimate semantics can be obtained in JT by a syntactic transformation on the justification frame, essentially performing a sort of resolution on the rules.

Towards Generalizable and Faithful Logic Reasoning over Natural Language via Resolution Refutation

Abstract:Large language models (LLMs) have achieved significant performance in various natural language reasoning tasks. However, they still struggle with performing first-order logic reasoning over formal logical theories expressed in natural language. This is because the previous LLMs-based reasoning systems have the theoretical incompleteness issue. As a result, it can only address a limited set of simple reasoning problems, which significantly decreases their generalization ability. To address this issue, we propose a novel framework, named Generalizable and Faithful Reasoner (GFaiR), which introduces the paradigm of resolution refutation. Resolution refutation has the capability to solve all first-order logic reasoning problems by extending reasoning rules and employing the principle of proof by contradiction, so our system's completeness can be improved by introducing resolution refutation. Experimental results demonstrate that our system outperforms previous works by achieving state-of-the-art performances in complex scenarios while maintaining performances in simple scenarios. Besides, we observe that GFaiR is faithful to its reasoning process.

Approximate Relational Reasoning for Higher-Order Probabilistic Programs

Abstract:Properties such as provable security and correctness for randomized programs are naturally expressed relationally as approximate equivalences. As a result, a number of relational program logics have been developed to reason about such approximate equivalences of probabilistic programs. However, existing approximate relational logics are mostly restricted to first-order programs without general state. In this paper we develop Approxis, a higher-order approximate relational separation logic for reasoning about approximate equivalence of programs written in an expressive ML-like language with discrete probabilistic sampling, higher-order functions, and higher-order state. The Approxis logic recasts the concept of error credits in the relational setting to reason about relational approximation, which allows for expressive notions of modularity and composition, a range of new approximate relational rules, and an internalization of a standard limiting argument for showing exact probabilistic equivalences by approximation. We also use Approxis to develop a logical relation model that quantifies over error credits, which can be used to prove exact contextual equivalence. We demonstrate the flexibility of our approach on a range of examples, including the PRP/PRF switching lemma, IND\$-CPA security of an encryption scheme, and a collection of rejection samplers. All of the results have been mechanized in the Coq proof assistant and the Iris separation logic framework.

Abstract:Belief revision and causality play an important role in many applications, typically, in the study of database update mechanisms and data dependence. New contributions on causal reasoning are continuously added to the pioneering works by Pearl, Halpern and others. Though there is a long tradition of modeling belief revision in philosophical logic, the entanglement between belief revision and causal reasoning has not yet been fully studied from a logical view. In this paper, we propose a new formal logic for doxastic causal reasoning. With examples, we illustrate that our framework explains the rational way of belief revision based on causal reasoning. We further study the general properties of the logic. A complete axiomatization, as well as a decidability result, will be given. In addition, we believe our work will shed light on understanding the relation between qualitative and quantitative approaches toward (causal) dependence in general.
Abductive Reasoning in Intuitionistic Propositional Logic via Theorem Synthesis

Abstract:With help of a compact Prolog-based theorem prover for Intuitionistic Propositional Logic, we synthesize minimal assumptions under which a given formula formula becomes a theorem. After applying our synthesis algorithm to cover basic abductive reasoning mechanisms, we synthesize conjunctions of literals that mimic rows of truth tables in classical or intermediate logics and we abduce conditional hypotheses that turn the theorems of classical or intermediate logics into theorems in intuitionistic logic. One step further, we generalize our abductive reasoning mechanism to synthesize more expressive sequent premises using a minimal set of canonical formulas, to which arbitrary formulas in the calculus can be reduced while preserving their provability. Organized as a self-contained literate Prolog program, the paper supports interactive exploration of its content and ensures full replicability of our results.
