Abstract:A simply synthesized 4-aminonaphthalimide derivative 1 expresses both polarity and viscosity sensitive fluorescence spectra,indicating its potential usage as an environmentally sensitive fluorescence probe. By comparing the fluorescence behavior of 1 with that of a known 4-aminonaphthalimide derivative 2,it was found that the substitution of the 4-amino group has profound influence on the environmentally sensitive fluorescence properties of 4-aminonaphthalimide.

Abstract:Triphenylamine (TPA) and binaphthyl (BINAP) have been widely used as building blocks in optoelectronics materials for their good electron donating and transport capability. However, TPA-bonded BINAP type of fluorescent probe towards Fe3+, a kind of important metal ion, has not been studied. Herein, a series of TPA-bonded BINAP D A-D type derivatives, 6,6-TB-1, 6,6-TB-2, 7,7-TB-1, 7,7-TB-2, and 7,7-OMeTB-1, was synthesized to investigate their fluorescence (FL) chemosensor properties and electronic effect on sensitivity. Results showed that these probes exhibited highly selective FL quenching toward Fe3+ in the presence of other common metal ions, and an enhanced sensitivity (limit of detection 1.7 x 10(-7) M) not inferior to that of other works, could be achieved by introducing electron-donating substituent into TPA group. Then, comprehensive studies, such as NMR, EPR, MALDI-TOF-MS, and XPS combined with Mulliken atomic charges analysis were performed to gain an insight into the probe's binding with Fe3+ to understand the detection mechanism. Compared with other works on TPA-based fluorescent probes ascribed to fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) or charge transfer (CT) mechanism, we reveal the interaction between Fe3+ and N atom of TPA and the formation of probe-Fe3+ complex leading to FL quenching. This work provides a simple strategy for designing a cost-effective Fe3+ fluorescent probe based on a single binding site to target one specific analyte.

Abstract:Abstract Naphthalimide derivatives are attracting increasing attention as fluorescent probes due to their excellent modifiability and photophysical properties. Their large, rigid coplanar structures and conjugated systems enable easy generation of fluorescence. The imide units and bromonaphthalene functionality offer facile and concise modification pathways in preparing amenable probes for different metal cations, anions, small molecules, and organelles. Therefore, naphthalimide probes have great potential for application in research fields, such as analytical chemistry, cell biology, and clinical diagnosis.

Abstract:The triphenylamine fluorophore with propeller-structure can be used not only as a strong electron donor, but also as a potential aggregation-induced emission (AIE) framework. At the same time, triphenylamine derivatives with different substituted groups (e.g. formyl, amino, halogen, boronic acid group, alkynyl) can easily be modified for further functionalization by simple reactions, such as condensation and metal coupling reaction. Thus, the functional triphenylamine derivatives are widely applied in the molecular design of solar cells, fluorescent dyes, solid-state luminescent materials and fluorescent probes. According to the detected analytes, such as cations, anions, and neutral small molecules, the triphenylamine-based fluorescent probes reported in the past five years are divided into three types. And on the viewpoint of their structures and performances, the new progress on the molecular design, synthesis and detecting application is reviewed. The developing potential of triphenylamine-based fluorescent probes is also envisioned, and the AIE-type probes with the properties of near-infrared and high photoluminescence quantum yield should be highlighted in the future.

Abstract:Fluorescent molecular probes and switches system plays an important part in molecular recognition. The study on fluorescent probes and switches of proton guest has been developing rapidly in recent years. The modular structure of fluor-spacer-amine is pointed out to be important according to the principle of photoinduced electron transfer( PET). Three derivatives of 3-(4-aminophenyl)-indolizine were synthesized for the design of fluorescent molecular probes for pH. The fluorescence spectra and fluorescence quantum yields of the compounds were examined. The present study suggests that 3- (4-aminophenyl) -indolizine derivatives 3a and 3b were appropriate to measure pH values in the range 2.1-4.2 by a ratiometric method that relies on fluorescence emission. It suggested that derivatives of 3-(4-aminophenyl) -indolizine could find useful applications as intracellular pH meters.

Abstract:Fourteen triphenylamine derivatives functionalized with fluorophenyl, methoxyphenyl, and pyridinyl groups as respective donors and acceptors were synthesized and characterized. Their photophysical properties were systematically investigated in various solvents with different polarities. The solvent-dependent Stokes shifts of these compounds were observed and analyzed by the Lippert-Mataga equation. The synthesized compounds, especially tris(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl) amine, presented pH-dependent absorptions and emissions, indicating that these compounds might be used as pH sensors.

Abstract:4-Aminophthalimide is a highly fluorescent signaling unit with excellent photophysical properties and wide application foregrounds. Based on this, a range of theoretical investigations are conducted on the fluorescent probe (E)-5-((2-hydroxybenzylidene) amino) isoindoline-1, 3-dione (HID) with the core of 4-aminophthalimide using density functional theory (DFT) and time-containing density functional theory (TD-DFT) methods in this paper. The optimized configurations, vertical excitation and emission energies, electronic characteristics and excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) behaviors of the probe HID are discussed in detail. Furthermore, to enhance the luminescent properties of HID, five novel compounds have been designed based on the structure of HID by introducing amino, methoxy and naphthalene groups (-NH2, -OMe and C10H8). Our work thoroughly explores how the property and position of substituents and conjugation affect photophysical characteristics and ESIPT processes. We find that the ESIPT dynamics can be modulated by the substitution and conjugation effects. Specifically, the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the ortho-position and the introduction of the naphthalene group promote the ESIPT behavior of HID1, whereas the introduction of amino and methoxy groups at the meta-position exhibits the contrary impact. Therefore, we boldly infer that the introduction of electron-donating groups in the ortho-position and the introduction of the conjugated group make the ESIPT process more effortless to occur, whereas the introduction of substituents with opposing natures in the meta-position makes the ESIPT process more difficult to occur. In addition, the ionization potentials (IP), electron affinities (EA) and reorganization energies (λh and λe) of molecules are calculated to assess their potential as luminescent materials. Our work not only reveals the luminescence and ESIPT mechanism of the probe HID1, but also proposes to modulate the ESIPT process through the substitution and conjugation effects. In particular, the designed molecules have better photoelectric properties as a result of their red-shifted absorption and fluorescence spectra, smaller energy gaps, larger transferred charges and greater charge transferred distances, which offers some valuable ideas for the experimental development of more efficient organic luminescent materials with ESIPT properties.

Abstract:Fluorescein derivatives are important fluorescent probes which can be used for detection and optical imaging. Fluorescein derivatives are usually constructed by introducing aldehyde groups or esterified onto fluorescein xanthene ring and benzene moiety. Typically, the research direction of connecting amino groups with fluorescein monoaldehyde is in hot. Because of their high activity, these derivatives can be complexed with the analytes to produce changes of colors and the increase or decrease of fluorescence intensity. This article reviewed fluorescein probes in the past two years according to classification of different analytes including metal ions, anions, small molecules and biological macromolecules. The synthesis methods, optical properties, possible mechanisms and applications of fluorescein probes are summarized. This article provides a reference for the screening of fluorescein probes with high sensitivity and biological detection and can propel their further applications in sensing and detection of analytes.

Abstract:Fluorescent molecular probes as a kind of efficient means to detect metal ions exhibit the advantages of easy operation as well as high sensitivity and selectivity.This review summarizes the most recent research progress of naphthalimide-based fluorophore molecular probes.It is pointed out that naphthalimides exhibit unique fluorescent chemical properties(such as high fluorescence quantum yield,moderate fluorescence emission wavelength,large Stokes shifts,good light stability and good accessibility to structure modification).This is why naphthalimides are highly focused on the research field of fluorophore molecular probes.Besides,it is also pointed out that new progresses have been continuously made in the synthesis,ion recognition,detection and applications in live cell imaging of naphthalimide fluorescent molecular probes.

Abstract:Biological thiols, such as glutathione, cysteine, and homocysteine, are closely associated with human health and disease. In this work, we demonstrated a general strategy for the design of fluorescent probes for the detection of various biological related thiols. The preferred strategy we employed was to introduce a 3,5-dinitropyridyl moiety to a selected fluorophore via ether linkage to afford fluorescent probe. Once the ether bond was thiolyzed by biothiol, the hydroxy-functionalized fluorescent dye would be released and fluorescence emission restored. Herein, some novel fluorescent probes based on this strategy have been developed for sensing biothiols in living cells. All these probes presented here showed desirable properties, such as high sensitivity, high selectivity and preferred reaction kinetics. Moreover, the probes have been used for imaging of intracellular biothiols with emission colors ranging from green to near-infrared (NIR).

Abstract:Fluorescent probes are gaining more and more attention because of their high selectivity , sensitivity , fast response , simple operation and low detection limit .Compounds based on excited state intramolecular proton transfer( ESIPT) have special excited state photophysical properties , such as high fluorescence quantum yield and large Stokes shift .For fluorescent molecules , the larger Stokes shift can reduce the interference caused by self-absorption and internal filtration , and enhance light-fastness of the molecules and facilitate the emitting of fluorescence .In this review , we summarized these ESIPT fluorescent probes from the classification of targets.The targets for detection were divided into ions ( including metal cations and anions ) , neutral small molecules and biological macromolecules .The existing problems and application prospects of fluorescent molecules based on ESIPT were commented .

Abstract:A new naphthalimide derivative was synthesized and characterized as Al3+-selective fluorescent probe. Study showed that this probe has good affinity and sensitibity towards Al3+ compared to other common metal ions, and the addition of Al3+ triggered a prominent fluorescence enhancement at 439 nm in ethanol phase. With the optimized experimental conditions, the probe exhibited a dynamic response range for Al3+ from 1.0´10-6 M to 5.0´10-6 M with a detection limit of 4.1´10-7 M.

Abstract:Luminogens with aggregation-induced emission feature (AIEgens) are highly demanded because of its excellent performance in fluorescent bioprobes. In this work, three AIEgens based on tetraphenylethylene isoquinolinium (TPE-IQ) derivatives by introducing different electron donor and sterically hindered groups to replace the phenyl ring of the isoquinolinium core are prepared in a one-pot reaction with a high yield and characterized systematically. By the analysis of photophysical properties and theoretical calculations, the structure-property relationships among them become clear. Although they all inherit AIE feature as expected, these similar structural AIEgens present different organelle-targets, which is attributed to their different cellular uptake way and energy barrier to cell membrane by detailed experiments. In addition, these TPE-IQ-based AIEgens are potential candidates for photodynamic therapy originating from their activities of generating reactive oxygen species under visible light irradiation.

Abstract:The 4−N,N-dimethyl-1,8-naphthalimide based fluorescent probes have been explored for selective detection of Au3+. Both probes show a pronounced fluorescence enhancement response to Au3+. Hydroxy is introduced as ligand of Au3+ for Probe 1 and the newly designed Probe 2 contains an alkyne moiety to recognize Au3+ through an irreversible C≡C bond hydrolysis reaction. Probe 1 exhibits higher performance such as faster response, lower detection limit of 0.050μM and the better responsive effect in 99.5% water system compared with most of probes published. The Probe 2 displays high stability to pH, suitable water solubility, wider linear range (0–100μM) to Au3+, and live-cells imaging with low cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Two 4-amino-N-bromoalkylphthalimide derivatives were prepared by the reduction of 4-nitro-N-bromoalkylphthalimides and SnCl2 and reacted with calix[4]azacrown to give two new 4-aminophthalimido-N-alkyl-calix[4]azacrown derivatives. They were characterised by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and HRMS and shown to adopt a cone conformation, 4-aminophthalimido-N-alkyl-calix[4]azacrown may provide a potential fluorescent probe for Cu2+.

Abstract:Life are governed by cellular complex metabolic processes. One of the on-going endeavours in the scientific community is to study and understand these dynamic biochemical reactions and the roles of biomolecules in sustaining life. Fluorescent probes have been widely used in the visualization of analytes in physiological and pathological processes, due to their advantages such as easy operation, low cost, high sensitivity, capability of multi-channel and real-time visualization in vivo. However, most fluorescent probes can only respond to single analyte, which is not suitable to mornitor multiple analytes in complex biological system. In recent five years, significantly more multi-analyte fluorescent probes based on 1, 8-naphthimide fluorophore have been designed in biological or environmental field. Categorized by the fluorescent mechanisms, such as single fluorescent mechanism (e. g. photoinduced electron transfer (PET), intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET)), dual fluorescent mechanisms (e. g. PET-ICT, PET-FRET, and ICT-FRET) and so on, this review highlights the recent progress in designing strategies, corresponding recognition process, optical property and cell imaging of 1, 8-naphthalimide-based multi-analyte fluorescent probes. Finally, the development trend and possible challenges of such fluorescent probes are prospected.

Abstract:Fluorescence bioimaging is considered an indispensable technique in biological research due to its high sensitivity, excellent spatial and temporal resolution, non-invasiveness, rapid and real-time responsiveness, as well as its ease of accessibility. Among these, fluorescence probes play a pivotal role in fluorescence imaging technology thanks to their strong specificity, high sensitivity, rapid response, and straightforward implementation. Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) molecules exhibit a unique phenomenon: they emit weak or no fluorescence when dissolved in a solution but become highly luminescent under aggregated/clustering conditions. Leveraging this, fluorescent probes with AIE characteristics often demonstrate fluorescence activation under conditions of spontaneous aggregation or binding with analytes, showcasing high sensitivity and exceptional signal-to-noise ratios. Consequently, fluorescence probes based on the distinctive optical properties of AIE hold immense potential for applications in fluorescence bioimaging. This paper primarily investigates the synthesis properties and applications in biosensing of a series of novel organic fluorescence probes with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. By synthesizing a range of compounds with AIE properties and experimentally determining their photophysical properties and molecular structures, the study explores the potential applications of these compounds in DNA recognition, protein detection, small molecule recognition, cellular pH detection, and bioimaging.

Abstract:A triamine aryl pyrazole-based NIR fluorescent probe with good water solubility has been developed for detecting and imaging Aβ aggregates in Alzheimer’s disease. In vitro studies have demonstrated that the probe high affinity to Aβ aggregates with an increase of fluorescence intensity have been due to the intramolecular charge transfer effect. The probes can specifically image Aβ plaques in brain sections of triple transgenic AD mice.

Abstract:Electron donor-acceptor (D-A)-type molecules are the most widely employed two-photon scaffolds. Unfortunately, current D-A-type fluorophores suffer from serious solvent-dependent emission wavelength and brightness, thwarting their use for high-fidelity imaging in complicated biological systems. Herein, with single-atom replacement and acceptor fusing in acedan (6-acetyl-2-(dimethylamino)naphthalene), we devise a new class of D-A type fluorophore (TPQL dyes). Our design results in TPQL fluorophores with a slight emission redshift (Delta lambda(TPQL1) < 32 nm versus Delta lambda(Acedan-NH2) = 91 nm) and high brightness (epsilon Phi(TPQL1) = 7,600 to 6,923 versus epsilon Phi(Acedan-NH2) = 7,372 to 1,314) in different solvent systems. Such features not only provide bright and unbiased fluorescent images of TPQL fluorophores in the cell but also bring deeper tissue penetration and greater signal-to-background ratios in tissue. As a proof-of-concept demonstration, using probe TPQL-N-3 and TPQL-APN, we monitor the dynamic changes of H2S and APN during zebrafish liver development with high fidelity to the best of our knowledge.
