Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To confirm Tanshinone II A's (Tan II A) anti-cancer activity on nude mice bearing human breast cancer cells with estrogen receptor (ER) positive and negative and to elucidate the mechanism of its activity in vivo. METHODS:Established the animal model of nude mices bearing human breast cell, both ER positive MCF-7 and ER negative MDA-MB-231, each group was divided into 3 subgroups, respectively by intraperitoneal injection of Tan II A at a dose of 30 mg/kg 4 times/week, by gavage of Tamoxifen at a dose of 1 mg/kg 7 times/ week and by solvent control for 4 weeks. All animals were tested for anti-cancer activity including the weights and the volumes of the tumor, apoptosis index by flow cytometry and expression of p53, bcl-2, cerbB-2 by immunohistochemistry method after the treatment. RESULTS:In MCF-7 group, there were a 33.64% tumor mass volume reduction and a 32.24% tumor mass weight reduction after Tan II A treatment; in MDA-MB-231 group, a 38.34% tumor mass volume reduction and a 39.82% tumor mass weight reduction were observed in Tan II A subgroups; the differences between Tan II A and Tamoxifen or solvent control were statistically significant in both groups (P < 0.05); increase of apoptosic fiction by flow cytometry examination in Tan II A subgroups in both MCF-7 (48.31% +/- 5.84%) and MDA-MB-231(50.25% +/- 5.03%) groups were observed, there were both significant differences between Tan II A and the other subgroups (P < 0.05). Statistically significant decrease of p53 and bcl-2 expression were observed in Tan lI A between solvent control subgroup in both MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 groups (P < 0.05) while cerbB-2 had no significant difference with control group (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION:Tan lI A can inhibit both breast cancer cell MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 growth in vivo, which had better anti-cancer effect than Tamoxifen. The mechanism may be associated with the induction of apoptosis, down regulation of the expression level of gene bcl-2 and p53, but may not with the expression level of cerbB-2.
Dual Effects of Sodium Aescinate on Vascular Tension in Rat Thoracic Aorta.

Abstract:Objective: Sodium aescinate (SA) is used as a vasoactive drug in clinical treatment. This study was designed to investigate the effects of SA on rat isolated thoracic aorta and the possible mechanisms.Methods: Isometric tension was recorded in response to drugs in organ bath.Results: The effects of SA obeyed an all-or-nothing response. SA in relatively low dose (>= 50 mu g/ml) had an endothelium-independent contractile effect in rat aorta (P<0.01), which depended on extracellular Ca2+ influx via L-type Ca2+ channel (P<0.05). SA in relatively high dose (>= 100 mu g/ml) also induced vasoconstriction in Ca2+-free medium (P<0.01), which was independent of the activity of inositol-1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R), ryanodine receptor (RYR). and protein kinase C (PKC). SA in relatively high dose (>= 100 mu g/ml) dilated both endothelium-intact and endothelium-denuded aortic rings precontracted by phenylephrine (PE) or KCl (each P<0.01). SA inhibited extracellular Ca2+ influx induced by PE or KCl (each P<0.01) and had no activation effect on K+ channels on vascular smooth muscle. The relaxant effect of SA partly depended on the activity of NO synthase but not on the activity of cyclooxygenase.Conclusions: Taken together, this study indicated that SA had dual effects on vascular tension in rat isolated thoracic aorta. Abstract:Objective To explore the effects of targeting drug on human non-small cell lung cancer A549 cells in vitro and quantification of iodine with gemstone spectral imaging(GSI). Methods In the first part, synthesis of small iodine-containing drugs with cytotoxicity targeting A549 cells. A549 cells were treated in vitro with targeting drugs and gefitinib at a concentration gradient of 2.5,5,10,20,40 μmol/L. Their proliferation effects were ana-lyzed by the thiazolyl blue ( MTT) assay. In the second part, targeting drugs and gefitinib at a concentration gradi-ent of 0,1.87,3.75,7.5,15,30 mmol/L underwent GE HD750 CT with GSI mode. Analyzing the inhibition rate of two kinds of drug cell proliferation ,comparing the relation and discrepancy between measured iodine concentrations and real iodine concentrations. Results In the first part, Targeting drugs and gefitinib induced a dose-and time-independent growth inhibition by MTT. When the concentration was more than 10 μmol/L, the inhibitory rate of targeting drugs was higher than that of gefitinib (P＜0.05). In the second part, in a certain range of concentration, the CT value and iodine concentration of targeting drugs were significantly higher than that of gefitinib(P＜0.05). The measured concentrations of targeting drugs were obviously correlated to the real concentrations ( r =0.998 ) without significant difference between these two values(P＞0.05). Conclusion The targeting drug has good in-hibitory effect on A549 cells in vitro. The high CT value of targeting drugs is good for CT shows. GSI of spectral CT is a reliable method to quantify iodine of the targeting drugs.
Study on Anticancer Activity of Syngnathus in Vitro

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the anticancer activity of Syngnathus in vitro.METHOD:Observing the influence of different extracts from Syngnathus on growth of different cancer cell strains by MTT method.RESULT:It has been found out that the fat-soluble nonsaponified extract from Temminck et Schlegel and the alcoholic extract from Syngnathus acus have cytotoxic activities. The nonsaponified extract from Temminck et Schlegel can inhibit the growth of cancer cell strains KB, Hela, PAA, K562, and Bcap37, and the alcoholic extract from Syngnathus acus can inhibit the growth of cancer cell strin KB, But Bloch shows no apparent anticancer activity.CONCLUSION:Syngnathus has promising prospects as an anticancer Chinese medicine.

Abstract:Objective:To evulate the effect in the treatment of lung cancer and esophagus with radiotherapy combinded Chinese herbal medicine.Methods: Total of 40 patients were treated with radiotherapy and herbal medicine,Chinese herbal medicine-Fuzhengjiandukeli was taken 30 minutes before the dinner,another 40 patients were treated with radiotherapy only.Results:The observed group in reducing radiation damage efficacy was obvious,especially in dry mouth,natrium stay,deficient trapped,swallow pain and upset insomnia,centralizer reduction poison particles can significantly reduce adverse reaction.Conclusion: The Chinese herbal medicine-Fuzhengjiandukeli can effectively prevent and improve clinical symptoms indaced by radiotherapy in lung cancer and esophagus cancer.

Inhibition of tumor metastasis by sodium caffeate and its effect on angiogenesis

Abstract:Objective: Sodium caffeate (SC), the sodium salt of caffeic acid, was synthesized in our laboratory. We studied the antimetastatic effect induced by SC and its inhibition of tumor angiogenesis using various in vitro and in vivo metastasis assays. Methods: The in vivo inhibitory effect of SC on metastasis and angiogenesis was examined in the Lewis lung carcinoma pulmonary metastasis model and chicken chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) model, respectively. MTT assay and flow cytometry were used to measure the inhibition by SC of the proliferation of transformed human umbilical vein endothelial cells (ECV304) and the apoptosis induced by SC in ECV304 cells, respectively. A cell attachment assay was used to evaluate inhibition by SC of the adhesion activity of human high metastatic giant cell carcinoma of the lung (PG) cells. A cell invasion assay was used to evaluate the effect of SC on the ability of PG cells to cross tissue barriers. Inhibition by SC of gelatinase secretion in PG cells was determined by zymography. Results: In vivo results showed that SC (1 g/kg i.p. for 14 days) inhibited pulmonary metastasis at a rate of 55%. There were no differences in animal weights among the groups. The angiogenesis of CAM was inhibited by SC (200 microg/egg) at a rate of 70%. In vitro studies showed that SC inhibited the proliferation of ECV304 cells by inducing apoptosis. SC also reduced the adhesion and invasion ability of PG cells and inhibited the secretion of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in PG cells. Conclusion: SC might be a potential antimetastatic agent with an antiangiogenic effect.

Abstract:Tanshinone Ⅱ A is effective to treat a great variety of diseases,and recently its potential anticancer activity has attracted great attention.While studies in vitro indicate that tanshinone Ⅱ A is toxic in a number of cell types and affects differentiation and apoptosis,but anticancer effects in vivo remain to be elucidated.Tanshinone Ⅱ A varies widely in production quality,method of administration (oral,intravenous,subcutaneous,and so on),usage and dosage.Tanshinone Ⅱ A" s limited hydrophilicity,poor intestinal absorption,low oral efficacy,and other pharmacologic characteristics have impacted both its usage and elucidation of efficacy and mechanisms in vivo,which are the focus of future research.

Abstract:Objective:To study the effects of As 2O 3-HAS-NS on the growth of human bladder cancer cell.Methods:As 2O 3-HAS-NS were prepared by using methods of chemical cross-linking,the concentration of As 2O 3 was determined by atomic fluometry method,the growth inhibition of tumor cell was studied by the microscope observation and MTT method. 3H-TDR incorportion method was used to show killing activity in vitro,and cell apoptosis was observed by FCM.Results:As 2O 3-HAS-NS could inhibit the growth of EJ cell effectively,which depended on the effect time and concentration of drug. 3H-TDR incorportion method showed survival rate of EJ cell was high(86.16%) after As 2O 3-HAS-NS was used for 0.5 h,but As 2O 3-HAS-NS caused survival rate to decrease more quickly than As 2O 3.FCM analysis showed As 2O 3-HAS-NS could promote EJ cell apoptosis.Cell cycles analysis showed G 0/G 1 phase cells percentage decreased and G 2/M phase percentage increased remarkably,which showed that apoptosis cell were blocked in G 2/M phase. Sub-G 1 phase cells percentage was 9.4% at 24 h.Conclusions:As 2O 3-HAS-NS showed higher activity of killing bladder tumor cells than As 2O 3 and might be a kind of better pharmaceutics to treat stereo-tumor.
The Effects of Sodium TanshinoneⅡA Sulphonate Combined with CDDP on Gastric Cancer Cells by Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy

Abstract:ObjectiveTo evaluate the effects of sodium tanshinone ⅡA sulphonate(STS) combined with CDDP on the rattus gastric cancer models by intraperitoneal approach.Methods40 Wistar rats were implanted gastric tumor with the malignant tumor cell line Walker-256 and then divided randomly into 4 groups: the 0.9% sodium chloride(NS) group,the CDDP group,the STS group,and the STS + CDDP group.Each rat in the NS group was intraperitoneally injected with 0.9% NS 2 mL/kg;the CDDP group,CDDP 5 mg/kg;the STS group,STS 25 mg/kg;the STS + CDDP group,CDDP 5 mg/kg and STS 25 mg/kg.The chemotherapy was performed two times a week.At the end of the sixth week,all the animals were sacrificed and tumor masses were dissected entirely.The volume of tumors was measured,then the apoptosis index of gastric tumor was examined by terminal deoxynuleotidy transferase mediated nick and labeling(TUNEL) methods.ResultsThe tumor volumes of the NS,CDDP,STS and STS+CDDP groups were(1.69±0.51)cm3,(1.06±0.38)cm3,(1.12±0.41)cm3 and(0.67±0.13)cm3 respectively.The volume of tumors dwindled in the CDDP group,the STS group and the STS+CDDP group significantly in comparison with that in the NS group.The inhibitory ratio of tumor in the CDDP group,the STS group and the STS+CDDP group were 37.28%,33.73%,60.36% respectively,which revealed the statistic difference compared with the NS group(P<0.05).All these results indicated that combination therapy of STS with CDDP could inhibit the growth of gastric tumor apparently(P<0.05).The Apoptosis index(AI) in each group was(5.75±1.34)%,(24.15±4.80)%,(23.85±3.23)% and(45.10±3.75)% respectively.The AIs in the three experimental groups were significantly increased compared with the NS group(P<0.01),and theirs in STS+CDDP group were increased compared with the CDDP group and the STS group(P<0.01).ConclusionSTS can inhibit the growth of tumor and induce the apoptosis of gastric tumor.Combinative therapy of STS combined with CDDP shows more remarkable inhibition on the growth of transplanted gastric tumor in rats than single therapy of STS or CDDP.
In Vitro Anti-Tumor Effect of New Chinese Herbal Medicine Jinlongshe Granules

Abstract:Objective To investigate the in vitro anti-tumor effect of new Chinese herbal medicine jinlongshe granules.Methods MTT assay and the soft agar colony formation assay were used to observe the effects of jinlongshe on MKN-45 cells of stomach cancer and SPCA-1 cells of lung cancer in human.Results MMT assay indicated that the inhibitory rates in 24 h to MKN-45 cells were 30.69%,32.67% and 43.56% and those in 48 h were 36.99%,39.04% and 43.84%;the inhibitory rates of 24 h to SPCA-1 cells were 23.33%,24.44% and 37.78%,and those of 48 h were 28.46%,33.33%,46.34% in jinlongshe groups of low,middle and high doses separately,all of which presented the statistical differences as compared with blank group and explained the dose-dependence effect,meaning the inhibitory rate increased while the dose was higher.The results of soft agar colony formation assay showed that the colony formation rates of 100 MKN cells were 25.67%,22.17% and 19.83%;and those of 200 cells were 22.09%,19.75% and 17.67%;the colony formation rates of 100 SPCA-1 cells were 33.50%,28.17% and 24.17% and those of 200 cells were 24.59%,20.25% and 18.25% in jinlongshe groups of low,middle and high doses separately;all of which presented the differences as compared with blank group and explained the dose effect.Conclusion The in vitro experiment has observed that new Chinese herbal medicine,jinlongshe granules act on anti-tumor to a certain extent.
Effect of Angelica sinensis Root Extract on Cancer Prevention in Different Stages of an AOM/DSS Mouse Model

Abstract:Angelica sinensis root (ASR) extract was obtained to investigate its effects on colorectal carcinogenesis in different stages of an Azoxymethane/Dextran sodium sulphate (AOM/DSS) model. In this study, we showed that ASR extract administration in the initial stage of the AOM/DSS model had cancer preventive effects with decreasing tumor incidence and a high-grade of intraepithelial neoplasia incidence. With respect to DNA damage, the amounts of 8-oxoguanine and γ-H2AX were suppressed in colon tissue. The balance of apoptosis and proliferation was approaching the normal state. In contrast, ASR extract administration in the promotion stage of the AOM/DSS model accelerated the progression of carcinogenesis. The maximum tumor size reached 49.85 ± 25.04 mm3. High-grade pathological changes were significantly increased. Decreased DNA damage and P53 level reflected the disrupted reactive oxygen species (ROS) concentration in colorectal tissue, which led to an imbalance of proliferative and apoptotic relationships. These findings suggested that the cancer-preventive effect of ASR extract may be stage-dependent in the process of carcinogenesis.

Abstract:Oxidative stress is involved in the development and progression of disease. Because sodium aescinate has been reported to have immunity enhancing and antioxidative effects, we investigated its activity by employing a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) mouse model. Sixty BALB/c mice were randomly divided into four groups, including a 1.4 mg/kg treated group (n = 15), a 2.8 mg/kg treated group (n = 15), an untreated hepatocellular carcinoma control group (n = 15) and a normal control group (n = 15). After H22 cells were cultured for one week, we collected 2 × 10⁶ cells and injected them subcutaneously as 0.2 mL cell suspensions in sterile saline into the right shoulder region of every mouse. The animals were monitored for changes in activity, physical condition and body weight during the experiment. The next day after injection of H22 cells, animals in these test groups received one intraperitoneal injection of drug or physiological saline for 13 days. Results showed that in the sodium aescinate injection liquid (SAIL)-treated HCC mice, serum interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interferon-gamma (IFN-γ), Gamma-glutamyltransferase (γ-GT), alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels were significantly decreased compared with normal control mice. In addition, treatment with sodium aescinate injection liquid significantly decreased blood and liver malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, increased glutathione (GSH) levels, and antioxidant enzyme [superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px)] activities in a dose-dependent manner. We conclude that sodium aescinate injection liquid can decrease oxidative injury and enhance immunity functions in HCC mice.
Effect of 2-[(3-carboxy-1-oxoprogyl) Amino]-2-deoxy-d-glucose on Esophageal Cancer in Nude Mice and Expression of Its Relational Genes

Abstract:Objective To study the influence 2-[(3-carboxy-1-oxoprogyl) amino]-2-deoxy-D-glucose glucose(COPADG) on esophageal carcinoma nude mice,and the expression of related genes in tumors.Methods The models of esophageal carcinoma in nude mice were established.Experimental group was divided randomly into control group,COPADG group,5-FU group and combination group(CF).The rate of suppression of tumor was calculated and the expression of PCNA,caspase3,VEGF and MVD were detected by immunohistochemistry.The apoptosis of the tumors was detected by flow cytometry.Results The rate of suppression of tumor COPADG,5-FU,CF groups were 54.16%,38.78%,73.91% respectively.The expression of VEGF,MVD in COPADG,5-FU,CF groups were lower than control group(P0.01).The expression of caspase3 in COPADG,5-FU,CF groups were higher than control group(P0.01).The expression of PCNA in COPADG,CF groups were lower than control and 5-FU groups(P0.01).The apoptotic cell rates in the early stage in COPADG,5-FU,CF groups were higher than control group(P0.01).Conclusion COPADG can inhibit the growth of the human esophageal carcinoma in nude mice by suppressing proliferation,angiogenesis and induced apoptosis of the tumor.
The Anti-Tumor Effect of Total Saponins of Aralia White in Vitro and in Vivo

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To investigate the anti-tumor effect of total saponins of Aralia white(TSAW) in vitro and in vivo.METHODS The cytotoxicity of TSAW to mouse B16 melanoma cells,H22 hepatoma cells and FBL3 erythroleukemia cells were tested by cell inhibitory assay.The inhibitory effect of TSAW on S180 and H22 tumor growth were observed in mice.RESULTS The proliferations of B16 cells,FBL3 cells and mice H22 cells were inhibited by TSAW in vitro.IC50 of B16 and FBL3 were 0.077 4 g·L-1and 0.199 g·L-1 respectively.The inhibitory rate of TSAW on H22 cells proliferation was more than 80% in the concentration range 0.02-3.2 g·L-1 in vitro.The inhibitory rates of TSAW on S180 tumor growth were 16.9%,37.1% and 27.0%,at 100,200 and 300 mg·kg oral dose respectively in vivo,and on H22 tumor weight were 23.7%,10% and 13.4% at the same dosage series.CONCLUSION TSAW showed anti-tumor activities in vitro in the concentration range 0.02-3.2 g·L-1 and in vivo with the oral dosage of 200-300 mg·kg-1 in mice.
Anticancer effect of SZC015 on lung cancer cells through ROS-dependent apoptosis and autophagy induction mechanisms in vitro

Abstract:Oleanolic acid (OA) and its several derivatives possess various pharmacological activities, such as antitumor and anti-inflammation. In present study, anticancer effect of SZC015, an OA derivative, and its underlying mechanisms were investigated. We demonstrated that cell viability was significantly decreased in SZC015-treated lung cancer cells, but has less cytotoxicity in human bronchial epithelial cell line. Further investigation verified that apoptosis and autophagy induction and G0/G1 phase arrest were observed in SZC015-treated H322 cells. Mechanically, the level of Akt, p-Akt, p-IκBα, and total p65, the p-p65 in the cytoplasm and nucleus were suppressed by SZC015 in H322 cells, respectively. Inhibition of p65 nuclear translocation was also confirmed by immunofluorescence staining. In addition, co-treatment with chloroquine, an autophagy inhibitor, significantly inhibited SZC015-induced autophagy and enhanced SZC015-induced apoptotic cell death. Intracellular ROS was increased in a concentration-dependent manner, which could be prevented by N-Acetyl l-Cysteine, an ROS scavenger. Moreover, the level of Akt and procaspase-3 were increased, while the ratio of LC3 II/I was decreased. Taken together, our study demonstrates that the inhibitory effect of SZC015 against H322 cells is mediated by excessive ROS generation that could suppress Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway, which thereby leads to apoptotic and autophagic cell death.
Effect of Hypoxic Radiosensitizer Sodium Glycididazole on Long-Term Result of Radiotherapy for Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the long-term effect of sodium glycididazole (CMNa) as a hypoxic radiosensitizer on the radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.METHODS:Between May 1999 and May 2002, 211 patients with pathologically confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma were randomized into group-A treated by radiotherapy plus CMNa or group-B by radiotherapy alone. The staging was determined according to 92' Fuzhou staging systerm. The type, procession and dosage of radiotherapy were identical in both groups. The early adverse effect grade was assessed based on the CTC2.0 criteria and the late adverse effects were evaluated according to the RTOG/EORTC criteria. The median follow-up time was 52 months. All the data was analyzed by the SPSS 13.0 software. Characteristics and adverse events of these patients were compared between the two groups using t-test and the Wilcoxin rank sum test. Time-to-event curves were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The prognostic parameters were analyzed using univariate analysis and the Cox multivariate regression analysis.RESULTS:The clinical data of the two groups were comparable. The 3-year survival was 88.4% in group-A, while 75.2% in group-B, with a statistically significant difference between two groups (P = 0.010). Univariate analysis showed that the 3-year survival was statistically correlated with N-staging ((N0-1, 86.9%, N2-3 73.8%, P < 0.001), T-staging (T1-2 85.6%, T3-4 79.3%, P = 0.014), TNM staging (P = 0.039), and whether using CMNa or not during rediotherapy (Group-A 88.4%, Group-B 75.2%, P = 0.010). The 5-year recurrence-free survival, 5-year metastasis-free survival and 5-year overall survival were 75.8%, 74.9% and 77.7% in Group-A, while 63.0%, 63.0% and 62.4% in Group-B with a statistically significant difference between two groups (0.013, 0.022 and 0.010, respectively). If stratified in the subgroups, the overall survival of stage III - IV patients was statistically different between group A and B (P = 0.009), however, not of stage I - II patients (P = 0.502). Cox multivariate regression analysis showed that the independent prognostic parameters for survival were N-stage (RR = 3.288) , T-stage (RR = 2.147) and use of CMNa during rediotherapy (RR = 0.407). However, there was no statistically significant difference between two groups in acute or late adverse effects on nervous system or heart, which suggested that use of CMNa during radiotherapy would not aggravate the toxicity caused by radiotherapy.CONCLUSION:Sodium glycididazole is well tolerable effective as a hypoxic radiosensitizer, which can improve the efficacy of radiotherapy and the long-term result of nasopharyngeal carcinom a patients, especially for the stage III - IV patients.

Expert Opinion on Therapeutic Targets

Abstract:Objective: Sanguisorba officinalis L. (SA) has shown anti-inflammation, hema-topoiesis and immunity enhancing properties. No detailed studies have been reported on its anti-cancer effects. This study therefore was undertaken to analyze its effects on human breast cancer utilizing in vitro and in vivo methodologies. Methods: Human breast cancer cell lines MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 were utilized for evaluating SA influences on tumor progression and angiogenesis processes like proliferation, the cell cycle, apoptosis, tube formation and migration abilities. Both cancer xenografts were also used to determine the herb efficacy in vivo. Bioactivity-guided fractionation was carried out to determine the bioactive compounds in SA. Results: SA inhibited proliferation, induced S phase arrest and triggered mitochondrial pathway apoptosis in both cancer cells. Angiogenesis experiments revealed that SA inhibited VEGF expression in both cancer cell lines. Meanwhile, the proliferation, tube formation and migration abilities of endothelial cells were also inhibited. In vivo experiments demonstrated that SA reduced tumor size and neoangiogenesis in both cancer xenografts. Gallic acid and ellagic acid were finally identified as bioactive compounds in SA. Conclusions: SA might be of value as a breast cancer preventive and therapeutic agent by inducing apoptosis and inhibiting angiogenesis. Further research is needed to evaluate its metabolism and synergistic effects with chemotherapeutic drugs.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the inhibitory effects of Scutellaria barbate extracts on diethylnitrosamine-induced hepatocarcinoma in rats.METHODS:Hepatocarcinoma model rats were induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN). Sixty SD male rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: normal control group, hepatocarcinoma model group, ESB of high dose group and ESB of low dose group. All rats were killed in the 18th week, the levels of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), total bilirubin (TBIL), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), gamma-glutamyltransferase (gamma-GT) and alpha-L-fucosidase (AFU) in serum were measured by biochemical examinations; Hematoxy and eosin (HE) methods were used to examine the changes of liver pathology.RESULTS:The levels of ALT, AST, TBIL, ALP, gamma-GT, AFU in hepatocarcinoma model group and ESB groups were higher than that of control group (P < 0.05). ESB could relieve hepatic injures. The levels of liver function indexes in ESB groups were lower than that of model group. Histological examination demonstrated that the number of liver cancer nodus in ESB groups were lower than that of model group. Furthermore, ESB could attenuate the grade of cancer cell differentiation.CONCLUSION:ESB could inhibit experimental hepatocarcinoma and relieve hepatic injures in rats.
