Abstract:whereV : R → R andH : R×RN×R2M → R are periodic int andx; (u, v) ≡ (0,0)∈R2M is a stationary solution. Our purpose is to find a nonstationary solution z = (u, v) : R×RN → R2M of (S) satisfyingz(t, x)→ 0 as|t | + |x| → ∞. In this case, it is called the homoclinic orbit that is homoclinic to the stationary solution. During the last ten years, the existence of homoclinic solutions has been studied by variational methods (see e.g. [AB1; AB2; CR; ScZ; SZ; WZ] and the references cited therein). Since there is no compactness of imbedding, the problem becomes very complicated. The difficulty also occurs when we consider (S). Before stating the main results, let us recall some well-known results related to (S). Brézis and Nirenberg [BrN] considered the system { ∂tu−1xu = −v5+ f −∂tv −1xv = u3+ g for (t, x)∈ (0, T )× satisfyingu = v = 0 on(0, T )×∂ andu(0, x) = v(T, x) = 0 in. Here is a bounded domain of R andf, g ∈L∞(). Using Schauder’s fixed point theorem, they obtained a solution (u, v) with u∈L4((0, T )×) andv ∈L6((0, T )×). Abstract:A coadjoint nilpotent orbit [inline-graphic xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="01i" /] of a complex semisimple Lie group G is said to be spherical if it contains an open orbit of a Borel subgroup. We determine when and how to attach unitary representations to such an orbit for the real orthogonal and symplectic groups. Abstract:Although the axis-symmetric heteroclinic orbits of Lorenz-like systems have been intensively studied in the past decades, scholars seem to pay scant attention to the centro-symmetric ones. To achieve this target, the present paper introduces a new subquadratic centro-symmetric three-dimensional Lorenz-like system: ẋ=a(y - x) , ẏ=cx - √(x^2)z , ż= -bz + √(x^2)y , and proves the existence of a pair of centro-symmetric to E_0 and E_± combining the definitions of α-limit and ω-limit set, Lyapunov functions. The effectiveness and correctness of the theoretical conclusions are verified via a few numerical examples. Not only does the study provide new ideas for finding heteroclinic orbits, but also it poses an interesting question that the existence of heteroclinic orbits may depend on the degrees of the considered models.

Abstract:We study the following coupled Schrödinger equations which have appeared as several models from mathematical physics: {displaymath} {cases}-\Delta u_1 +\la_1 u_1 = \mu_1 u_1^3+\beta u_1 u_2^2, \quad x\in \Omega, -\Delta u_2 +\la_2 u_2 =\mu_2 u_2^3+\beta u_1^2 u_2, \quad x\in \Om, u_1=u_2=0 \,\,\,\hbox{on \,$\partial\Om$}.{cases}{displaymath} Here $\Om$ is a smooth bounded domain in $\R^N (N=2, 3)$ or $\Om=\RN$, $\la_1,\, \la_2$, $\mu_1,\,\mu_2$ are all positive constants and the coupling constant $\bb<0$. We show that this system has infinitely many sign-changing solutions. We also obtain infinitely many semi-nodal solutions in the following sense: one component changes sign and the other one is positive. The crucial idea of our proof, which has never been used for this system before, is turning to study a new problem with two constraints. Finally, when $\Om$ is a bounded domain, we show that this system has a least energy sign-changing solution, both two components of which have exactly two nodal domains, and we also study the asymptotic behavior of solutions as $\beta\to -\infty$ and phase separation is expected.

Abstract:We revisit a 3D chaotic system in Dias et al. (Nonlinear Anal Real World Appl 11(5): 3491–3500, 2010 ) and mainly consider its singular orbits not yet investigated: homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits and singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles. We first consider the existence of homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. Our results, one of which shows the existence of two heteroclinic orbits for c ≥ 2a > 0 and b > 0 , not only further supplement the ones obtained in this literature, but also give something new to theoretically helpfully understand the occurrence of chaos. Further, numerical simulations show that this system has not only two heteroclinic orbits for a ≤ c < 2a, b > 0 or a > c > 0 and some b_0∈ (0, a+c/a-c) , but also chaotic attractor when heteroclinic orbits disappear. Then, by utilizing a known conclusion, we demonstrate the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles in this system. Combining analytical and numerical techniques, it is shown that for the parameter value c = 0 the system presents an infinite set of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles, which completely solves a conjecture presented in the above literature for the existence of infinitely many singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles in the system.

Abstract:We prove the existence of a class of orbitally stable bound state solutions to nonlinear Schrödinger equations with super-quadratic confinement in two and three spatial dimensions. These solutions are given by time-dependent rotations of a non-radially symmetric spatial profile which in itself is obtained via a doubly constrained energy minimization. One of the two constraints imposed is the total mass, while the other is given by the expectation value of the angular momentum around the z-axis. Our approach also allows for a new description of the set of minimizers subject to only a single mass constraint.

Abstract:The coset space treatment of the molecular electronic dynamics is demonstrated in which Huckel orbitals are merely special points in the complicated, multi-dimensional manifolds. The results for the propenyl and cyclo-propenyl systems with degenerate site energies show that for symmetric inter-site couplings, the dynamics is periodic while for asymmetric couplings, it can be irregular or chaotic. Other initial conditions besides the Huckel parameters are considered with results discussed. Though sample calculations are limited to systems of one and two electrons in three orbitals, the conclusions about the chaotic universality in molecular electronic dynamics are drawn.

Abstract:Natural orbital theory is a computationally useful approach to the few and many-body quantum problem. While natural orbitals are known and applied since many years in electronic structure applications, their potential for time-dependent problems is being investigated only since recently. Correlated two-particle systems are of particular importance because the structure of the two-body reduced density matrix expanded in natural orbitals is known exactly in this case. However, in the time-dependent case the natural orbitals carry time-dependent phases that allow for certain time-dependent gauge transformations of the first kind. Different phase conventions will, in general, lead to different equations of motion for the natural orbitals. A particular phase choice allows us to derive the exact equations of motion for the natural orbitals of any (laser-) driven two-electron system explicitly, i.e., without any dependence on quantities that, in practice, require further approximations. For illustration, we solve the equations of motion for a model helium system. Besides calculating the spin-singlet and spin-triplet ground states, we show that the linear response spectra and the results for resonant Rabi flopping are in excellent agreement with the benchmark results obtained from the exact solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation.

Abstract:We seize some new dynamics of a Lorenz-like system: <(x)over dot> = a(y-x), y = dy-xz, z = -bz + fx(2) + gxy, such as for the Hopf bifurcation, the behavior of non-isolated equilibria, the existence of singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles and homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits. In particular, our new discovery is that the system has also two heteroclinic orbits for bg = 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0 other than known bg > 2a(f + g) and a > d > 0, whose proof is completely different from known case. All the theoretical results obtained are also verified by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Based on the famous Shimizu–Morioka system, this paper proposes a novel five-dimensional Shimizu–Morioka-type hyperchaotic system that has an infinite set of heteroclinic orbits. Of particular interest are the following observed properties of the system: (i) the existence of both ellipse-parabola-type and hyperbola-parabola-type of equilibria; (ii) the strange attractor coexisting either non-isolated equilibria or two pairs of symmetrical equilibria; (iii) the existence of the proposed strange attractors and hyperchaotic attractors bifurcated from the corresponding singularly degenerate heteroclinic cycles; (iv) the existence of an infinite set of both ellipse-parabola-type and hyperbola-parabola-type heteroclinic orbits.
