Abstract:We study three sub-problems of the N-body problem that have two degrees of freedom, namely the n-pyramidal problem, the planar double-polygon problem, and the spatial double-polygon problem. We prove the existence of several families of symmetric periodic orbits, including ``Schubart-like" orbits and brake orbits, by using topological shooting arguments.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a restricted four-body problem called the planar two-center-two-body problem. In the plane, we have two fixed centers Q 1 and Q 2 of masses 1, and two moving bodies Q 3 and Q 4 of masses ${\mu\ll 1}$. They interact via Newtonian potential. Q 3 is captured by Q 2, and Q 4 travels back and forth between two centers. Based on a model of Gerver, we prove that there is a Cantor set of initial conditions that lead to solutions of the Hamiltonian system whose velocities are accelerated to infinity within finite time avoiding all earlier collisions. This problem is a simplified model for the planar four-body problem case of the Painlevé conjecture.

Abstract:The simplest solutions of the N-body problem --symmetric relative equilibria-- are shown to be organizing centers from which stem some recently studied classes of periodic solutions. We focus on the relative equilibrium of the equal-mass regular N-gon, assumed horizontal, and study the families of Lyapunov quasi-periodic solutions bifurcating from them in the vertical direction. The proof of the local existence of such solutions relies on the fact that the restriction to the corresponding directions of the quadratic part of the energy is positive definite. We then discuss the possibility of continuing the families globally as action minimizers under symmetry constraints by using the fact that, in rotating frames where they become periodic, these solutions are highly symmetric. The paradigmatic examples are the "Eight" families for an odd number of bodies and the "Hip-Hop" families for an even number. We argue that it is precisely for these two families that global minimization may be used. We also study the relation with the regular N-gon, of the so-called "chain" choreographies (see C. Simó, New families of Solutions in N-Body Problems, Progr. Math. 201, 2001): here, only a local minimization property is true (except for N=3) and moreover the parity plays a deciding role, in particular through the value of the angular momentum.

A New Class of Symmetric Periodic Solutions of the Spatial Elliptic Restricted Three-Body Problem

Abstract:We show that there exists a new class of symmetric periodic solutions of the spatial elliptic restricted three-body problem. In such a solution, the infinitesimal body is confined to the vicinity of a primary and moves on a nearly circular orbit. This orbit is almost perpendicular to the orbital plane of the primaries, where the line of symmetry of the orbit lies. The existence is shown by applying a corollary of Arenstorf’s fixed point theorem to a periodicity equation system of the problem. And this existence doesn’t require any restriction on the mass ratio of the primaries, nor on the eccentricity of their relative elliptic orbit. Potential relevance of this new class of periodic solutions to real celestial body systems and the follow-up studies in this respect are also discussed.
Regularizable collinear periodic solutions in the $n$-body problem with arbitrary masses

Abstract:For $n$-body problem with arbitrary positive masses, we prove there are regularizable collinear periodic solutions for any ordering of the masses, going from a simultaneous binary collision to another in half of a period with half of the masses moving monotonically to the right and the other half monotonically to the left. When the masses satisfy certain equality condition, the solutions have extra symmetry. This also gives a new proof of the existence of Schubart orbit, when $n=3$.

Abstract:We present 1349 families of Newtonian periodic planar three-body orbits with unequal mass and zero angular momentum and the initial conditions in case of isosceles collinear configurations. These 1349 families of the periodic collisionless orbits can be divided into seven classes according to their geometric and algebraic symmetries. Among these 1349 families, 1223 families are entirely new, to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, some periodic orbits have the same free group element for different mass. We find that the scale-invariant average period linearly increases with the mass of one body when the masses of the other two are constant. It is suggested that the masses of bodies may play an important role in periodic three-body systems. The movies of these periodic orbits are given on the website .

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to find periodic solutions of the circular Sitnikov problem by the multiple scales method which is used to remove the secular terms and find the periodic approximated solutions in closed forms. Comparisons among a numerical solution (NS), the first approximated solution (FA) and the second approximated solution (SA) via multiple scales method are investigated graphically under different initial conditions. We observe that the initial conditions play a vital role in the numerical and approximated solutions behaviour. The obtained motion is periodic, but the difference of its amplitude is directly proportional with the initial conditions. We prove that the obtained motion by the numerical or the second approximated solutions is a regular and periodic, when the infinitesimal body starts its motion from a nearer position to the common center of primaries. Otherwise when the start point distance of motion is far from this center, the numerical solution may not be represent a periodic motion for along time, while the second approximated solution may present a chaotic motion, however it is always periodic all time. But the obtained motion by the first approximated solution is periodic and has regularity in its periodicity all time. Finally we remark that the provided solutions by multiple scales methods reflect the true motion of the Sitnikov restricted three–body problem, and the second approximation has more accuracy than the first approximation. Moreover the solutions of multiple scales technique are more realistic than the numerical solution because there is always a warranty that the motion is periodic all time.

Abstract:A triangular solution [Phys. Rev. D 107, 044005 (2023)] has recently been found to the planar circular three-body problem in the parametrized post-Newtonian (PPN) formalism, for which they focus on a class of fully conservative theories characterized by the Eddington-Robertson parameters $\beta$ and $\gamma$. The present paper extends the PPN triangular solution to quasi-elliptic motion, for which the shape of the triangular configuration changes with time at the PPN order. The periastron shift due to the PPN effects is also obtained.

On the Problem of Infinite Spin in Total Collisions of the Planar N-Body Problem

Abstract:For the planar $N$-body problem, we first introduce a class of moving frame suitable for orbits near central configurations, especially for total collision orbits, which is the main new ingredient of this paper. The moving frame allows us to reduce the degeneracy of the problem according to intrinsic symmetrical characteristic of the $N$-Body problem. First, we give a full answer to the infinite spin or $Painlev\acute{e}$-$Wintner$ problem in the case corresponding to nondegenerate central configurations. Then following some original ideas of C.L. Siegel, especially the idea of normal forms, and applying the theory of central manifolds, we give a partial answer to the problem in the case corresponding to degenerate central configurations. We completely answer the problem in the case corresponding to central configurations with one degree of degeneracy. Combining some results on the planar nonhyperbolic equilibrium point, we give a criterion for the case corresponding to central configurations with two degrees of degeneracy. We further answer the problem in the case corresponding to all known degenerate central configurations of four-body. Therefore, we solve the problem for almost every choice of the masses of the four-body problem. Finally, we give a measure of the set of initial conditions leading to total collisions.

Stability of the Planar Synchronous Full Two-Body Problem - the Approach of Periodic Orbits.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamical stability of the synchronous state of the planar full two-body problem (PF2BP) by employing the approach of periodic orbit in the primary’s body-fixed frame. Our results indicate that the traditional model to the spin–orbit resonances by neglecting the rotational motion’s influence on the orbital motion is inappropriate in the binary asteroid system because the two asteroids are close to each other, leading to strong coupling between the orbits and rotations. Focusing on the high-order spin–orbit resonance, the family genealogy of periodic orbits in the unperturbed case is broken apart by some resonances in the perturbed case. In the case of no spin–orbit resonances, the periodic orbit is near-circular and is generally but not always stable. In the case of spin–orbit resonances, the periodic orbit can be elliptic, and one branch of the periodic orbits is stable. In contrast, the other branch is unstable for small to moderate orbit eccentricities.

Abstract:We consider the two- and n-body problems on the two-dimensional conformal sphere MR2, with a radius R>0. We employ an alternative potential free of singularities at antipodal points. We study the limit of relative equilibria under the SO(2) symmetry; we examine the specific conditions under which a pair of positive-mass particles, situated at antipodal points, can maintain a state of relative equilibrium as they traverse along a geodesic. It is identified that, under an appropriate radius–mass relationship, these particles experience an unrestricted and free movement in alignment with the geodesic of the canonical Killing vector field in MR2. An even number of bodies with pairwise conjugated positions, arranged in a regular n-gon, all with the same mass m, move freely on a geodesic with suitable velocities, where this geodesic motion behaves like a relative equilibrium. Also, a center of mass formula is included. A relation is found for the relative equilibrium in the two-body problem in the sphere similar to the Snell law.

Abstract:In the past two decades, since the discovery of the figure-8 orbit by Chenciner and Montgomery, the variational method has became one of the most popular tools for constructing new solutions of the $N$-body problem and its extended problems. However, finding solutions to the restricted three-body problem, in particular, the two primaries form a collision Kepler system, remains a great difficulty. One of the major reasons is the essential differences between two-body collisions and three-body collisions.

More Than Six Hundred New Families of Newtonian Periodic Planar Collisionless Three-Body Orbits

Abstract:The famous three-body problem can be traced back to Isaac Newton in the 1680s. In the 300 years since this “three-body problem” was first recognized, only three families of periodic solutions had been found, until 2013 when Šuvakov and Dmitrašinović [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110, 114301 (2013)] made a breakthrough to numerically find 13 new distinct periodic orbits, which belong to 11 new families of Newtonian planar three-body problem with equal mass and zero angular momentum. In this paper, we numerically obtain 695 families of Newtonian periodic planar collisionless orbits of three-body system with equal mass and zero angular momentum in case of initial conditions with isosceles collinear configuration, including the well-known figure-eight family found by Moore in 1993, the 11 families found by Šuvakov and Dmitrašinović in 2013, and more than 600 new families that have never been reported, to the best of our knowledge. With the definition of the average period T = T/L f , where L f is the length of the so-called “free group element”, these 695 families suggest that there should exist the quasi Kepler’s third law T * ≈ 2:433 ± 0:075 for the considered case, where T ≈ = T | E | 3/2 is the scale-invariant average period and E is its total kinetic and potential energy, respectively. Abstract:Currently, the fifteen new periodic orbits of Newtonian three-body problem with equal mass were found by Šuvakov and Dmitra šinović [Phys Rev Lett, 2013, 110: 114301] using the gradient descent method with double precision. In this paper, these reported orbits are checked stringently by means of a reliable numerical approach (namely the “Clean Numerical Simulation”, CNS), which is based on the arbitrary-order Taylor series method and data in arbitrary-digit precision with a procedure of solution verification. It is found that seven among these fifteen orbits greatly depart from the periodic ones within a long enough interval of time, and are thus most possibly unstable at least. It is suggested to carefully check whether or not these seven unstable orbits are the so-called “computational periodicity” mentioned by Lorenz in 2006. This work also illustrates the validity and great potential of the CNS for chaotic dynamic systems.

Abstract:This paper investigated the periodic and quasi-periodic orbits in the symmetric collinear four-body problem through a variational approach. We analyze the conditions under which homographic solutions minimize the action functional. We compute the minimal value of the action functional for these solutions and show that, for four equal masses organized in a linear configuration, these solutions are the minimizers of the action functional. Additionally, we employ numerical experiments using Poincaré sections to explore the existence and stability of periodic and quasi-periodic solutions within this dynamical system. Our results provide a deeper understanding of the variational principles in celestial mechanics and reveal complex dynamical behaviors, crucial for further studies in multi-body problems.

Linear stability of the elliptic relative equilibria for the restricted N-body problem: two special cases

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the elliptic relative equilibria of the restricted $N$-body problems, where the $N-1$ primaries form an Euler-Moulton collinear central configuration or a $(1+n)$-gon central configuration. We obtain the symplectic reduction to the general restricted $N$-body problem. For the first case, by analyzing the relationship between this restricted $N$-body problems and the elliptic Lagrangian solutions, we obtain the linear stability of the restricted $N$-body problem by the $\omega$-Maslov index. Via numerical computations, we also obtain conditions of the stability on the mass parameters under $N=4$ and the symmetry of the central configuration. For the second case, there exist three positions $S_1,S_2$ and $S_3$ of the massless body (up to rotations of angle $\frac{2\pi}{n}$). For ${m_0\over m}$ sufficiently large, we show that the elliptic relative equilibria is linearly unstable if the eccentricity $0\le e<e_0$ and the massless body lies at $S_1$ or $S_2$; while the elliptic relative equilibria is linear stability if the massless body lies at $S_3$.
