Abstract:The Early Precambrian metamorphic complex of the Tarim basement mainly consist of three types of rock associations: (1) grey gneisses which are the main body of the complex, (2) amphibolite, and locally preserved mica-quartz schist and marble, commonly occurring as lenses and boudins in the grey gneisses, (3) granitic gneisses intruded in the grey gneisses. The Xingdi Tagh Group unconformably covers the crystalline basement. This study provides the new U-Pb zircon dating results for the Early Precambrian complex. Two samples of the amphibolite yielded different ages of 2492 ± 19 (2σ) Ma and 1836 ± 25 (2σ) Ma. The grey gneiss has zircons dated to be 2337 ± 6 (2σ) Ma, whereas the granitic gneiss has a precise age of 1943 ± 6 (2σ) Ma. U-Pb zircon geochronological data combined with the former works show that the amphibolite boudins in the grey gneisses might be Late Archean rocks, while the grey gneisses are the Early Preterozoic. Based upon the uncomformity between the granitic gneisses and the first cover -the Xingdi Tagh Group, we propose that the Xingdi Tagh Group is the Middle Proterozoic which deposited from about 1800Ma. This study shows that the relationship between the basement and the cover in the NE Tarim is alike to that of the North China craton.
