Abstract:The effect of many kinds of surfactants on ONP deinking was compared under the experimental conditions, and some surfactants which function well in the process were found. Results showed that two complex deinking agents had very good deinking efficiency.

Abstract:A series of polyether with different molecular structures prepared in our lab were evaluated as deinking agent.The contact angle of the polyether aqueous solution on ink was measured.Adhesion work of the polyether on ink was also determined.It was found that the ratio of epoxy-ethane/epoxy-propane in the molecular structure plays a key role in deinking efficiency(brightness).When the contact angle is less than 33.3°and adhesion work is about 55mN/m,the highest deinking efficiency is achieved.

Abstract:One of the major applications (40% in Europe) of plastic is packaging, which is often printed to display required information and to deliver an attractive aesthetic for marketing purposes. However, printing ink can cause contamination in the mechanical recycling process. To mitigate this issue, the use of surfactants in an alkaline washing process, known as de-inking, has been employed to remove printing ink and improve the quality of recyclates. Despite the existence of this technology, there are currently no data linking the de-inking efficiency with typical printing ink compositions. Additionally, it is necessary to investigate the de-inking process under the process parameters of existing recycling plants, including temperature, NaOH concentration, and retention time. This study aims to evaluate the performance of commonly used printing inks with different compositions under various washing scenarios for plastic recycling in conjunction with different de-inking detergents containing surfactants or mixtures of surfactants. The results indicate that the pigments applied to the ink have no significant effect on the de-inking process, except for carbon black (PBk 7). Nitrocellulose (NC) binder systems exhibit high de-inkability (over 95%) under the condition of 55 °C and 1 wt.% NaOH. However, crosslinked binder systems can impede the de-inking effect, whether used as a binder system or as an overprint varnish (OPV). The de-inking process requires heating to 55 °C with 1 wt.% NaOH to achieve a substantial effect. Based on the findings in this work, breaking the Van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonds, and covalent bonds between the printing ink and plastic film is an essential step to achieve the de-inking effect. Further research is needed to understand the interaction between surfactants and printing inks, enabling the development of de-inkable printing inks and high-performance surfactants that allow for de-inking with less energy consumption. The surfactant and NaOH have a synergistic effect in cleaning the printing ink. NaOH provides a negative surface charge for the adsorption of the cationic head of the surfactant and can hydrolyze the covalent bonds at higher concentrations (>2 wt.%).

Analysis Of Electrochemical Character Affecting Deinking Efficiency Of Onp

Abstract:inorganic salts including CaCl2, Al-2(SO4)(3) and MgCl2 are used to change electrochemical character and the deinking process of ONP was optimized. The main electrochemical characteristic parameters of deinking system, such as Zeta potential, turbid value, absorbance and transparence are measured, and the relationship between electrochemical characteristic parameters and dosage of inorganic salts as well as quality index of the deinked pulp were discussed. The research results showed that an optimal deinking efficiency can be obtained by adding definite feasible inorganic salts into the deinking system, and there is a good functional correlation between the quality indexes of the deinked pulp and the colloid chemistry characteristic parameters. Among three inorganic salts, the influence sequence to the deinking result is CaCl2 > Al-2(SO4)(3)> MgCl2, and the best additive is CaCl2. With a suitable dosage of CaCl2, the brightness of the deinked pulp can be increased 5.4 percent, and the content of residual ink particles in the deinked pulp is reduced by 60.92%.

Abstract:The enzymatic deinking and fiber modification of old newspaper by using cellulases and xylanase were investigated and the suitable enzymes were selected. The results demonstrated that the cellulases and hemicellulases obviously improved the deinking efficiency and fiber properties. Moreover, the synergistic effect of Novozym342 and xylanase (HC) could further enhance the deinking performance, reduce the dirt counts and develop the resultant pulp brightness. Additionally, compared to the traditional chemical deinked pulp, enzymatic deinked pulp had better bleachability, and the brightness of the bleached pulp reached 59.1%ISO, 9%ISO higher than that of the unbleached pulp.

Abstract:Paper for recycling has become a promising raw material for the pulp and paper industry due to its low cost and because it is conducive to sustainable development. Unfortunately, recycled paper contains a high volume of printed paper that is difficult to deink, which restricts its applications. Flotation deinking plays an essential role in the product quality and process cost of wastepaper recycling. This study was performed to evaluate the deinkability of environmentally friendly offset inks by flotation deinking. For this purpose, three mineral oil free series of four-color inks, namely, hybrid light emitting diode ultraviolet (LED–UV), LED–UV, and vegetable oil-based inks, were printed on white lightweight coated papers under laboratory conditions. The deinking methodology involves repulping, deinking agent treatment, flotation, hand sheet making, and evaluation of the produced hand sheets. The obtained results indicated that the hybrid LED–UV prints had the best deinkability. After flotation deinking, the deinking efficiency and the whiteness of the hybrid LED–UV ink increased by 58.1% and 47.6%, respectively. LED–UV ink had a 46.9% increase in the deinking efficiency and a 37.0% increase in the whiteness of the hand sheet. The deinking efficiency of the vegetable oil-based ink was the lowest, at 42.1%, and the whiteness of the hand sheet increased only by 23.8%. The particle size distribution analysis demonstrated that the hybrid LED–UV four-color ink exhibited a larger value of the average particle size than the two other. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the hybrid LED–UV ink particles on the surface of the fibers were the least abundant after deinking. The physical strength properties of the hand sheets, including tensile index, folding resistance, and interlayer bonding strength of the hybrid LED–UV, LED–UV inks, and vegetable oil-based inks, increased.

Abstract:In this study, the efficiency of the nonylphenol polyethoxylates (NPEOs)-degrading bacterium Sphingomonas sp. strain Y2 was evaluated, which was immobilized by a novel system composed of polydopamine (PD)-coated Fe3O4 iron nanoparticles (IONPs). The PD-IONPs, with a distinct core-shell structure, relatively uniform size, and high saturation magnetization, were prepared for Y2 immobilization. The performance of Y2 was unaffected by this novel immobilization method, exhibiting 79.5% and 99.9% of NPEOs (500 ppm) degradation efficiency at day 1 and 2, respectively. Furthermore, separation and recycling were more readily achieved for immobilized cells as compared to free cells. Immobilized cells retained over 70% of the original degradation activity after 6 cycles of utilization. These results suggest that Y2-PD-IONPs can be potentially used for NPEOs-contaminated wastewater bioremediation. Capsule: Immobilization of Sphingomonas sp. Effects of Deinking Mode on Pore Structure and Crystallization Property of Recycled Fiber

Abstract:X-ray diffraction and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption were adopted to investigate the pore structure and crystallization property of the fibers of old newspaper pulp(ONP) and deinking pulp with different deinking modes,and the fractal geometry was used to further analyze the pore structure of the fibers.The results indicate that(1) the BET specific surface area,BJH pore volume and BJH average pore size of the deinking fibers remain almost unchanged after a neutral,alkaline or enzymatic deinking process;(2) the fractal dimensions of the fibers before and after the deinking process are similar,which means that deinking modes have little effect on the pore structure of the fibers;(3) the crystallinity of the fibers decreases to 12.24%,6.12% or 0.77% after a neutral,alkaline or enzymatic deinking process,respectively;(4) the water retention value(WRV) increases after deinking,in an order of alkali deinking>neutral deinking>enzymatic deinking;and(5) after deinking,the beating degree and average length of the fibers slightly decrease while the content of fine fibers increases.

Abstract:The industrial wastewater produced in the process of producing o-nitronisole (ONN), containing o-nitrophnol (ONP)[7.4~11g/L], is treated with polymeric adsorbent NDA-117. It is shown that the effective amount of treatment is 20BV, the concentration of ONP in the effluent after adsorption is 60~80mg/L, and the removal efficiency of ONP excesses 99% by neutralization, precipitation and adsorption on resin. The ONP can be recovered by acidification of the desorbed effluent.

Abstract:The printing ink on the plastic surface will greatly reduce the quality of recycled plastic products. In this work, quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil (WCOEQ) was fabricated using waste cooking oil, epichlorohydrin, and trimethylamine aqueous solution as raw materials, through ring-opening esterification and quaternary amination reaction. The synthesis conditions of WCOEQ were optimised, and the structure and properties of WCOEQ were characterised by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, zeta potential, and <sup>1</sup>H NMR. Furthermore, WCOEQ had excellent emulsifying performance, low kraft point, low critical micelle concentration value, good foaming, and stability, which could effectively reduce the surface tension of water, showing application potential in the field of plastic deinking. Importantly, compared with the waste cooking oil without deinking effect, the WCOEQ had an excellent deinking performance on the ink on the plastic surface, and the deinking efficiency could be improved by increasing the concentration of the deinking agent, the deinking temperature, and prolonging the pre-soaking and stirring time. The results of atomic force microscope, energy-dispersive spectroscopy, optical photos, and Leica microscope showed that the roughness changed significantly and the ink molecules were gradually peeling off. This work highlighted the potential of quaternary ammonium-modified waste cooking oil for excellent removal of printing inks on the plastic surface.

Abstract:The pulp and paper industry employs processes that produce a large amount of wastewater, resulting in pollution of the environment. In the present study, deinking wastewater was treated using an integrated process of combined coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge process, and Fenton reaction system. The deinking wastewater produced from a large-scale papermaking company was treated. Results indicated that the sedimentation with coagulation and flocculation, used as a pretreatment process, was a preferred option for SS removal. The semi-extended aeration system for COD and BOD5 removal delivered excellent performance. The residual and barely biodegradable pollutants in the wastewater could be efficiently removed by Fenton reactions. The COD, BOD5, and SS total removal efficiencies achieved were 94%, 90%, and 99%, respectively. Measures for control proposed in the present study can efficiently resolve the problems encountered in the operation and can maintain a stable process. The integrated process combining coagulation/flocculation, activated sludge process, and the Fenton reaction system is a favorable option for the long-term operation of the treatment of deinking wastewater. Fenton reactions as a tertiary process applied in deinking wastewater treatment can remove efficiently recalcitrant pollutants and show reliable performance for effluent.

Synergistic effect of cellulo-xylanolytic and laccase enzyme consortia for improved deinking of waste papers

Abstract:This study reports the cellulo-xylanolytic cocktail production from Hypocrea lixii GGRK4 using multi-objective genetic algorithm-artificial neural network tool, resulting in 8.32 ± 1.07 IU/mL, 51.53 ± 3.78 IU/mL activity of CMCase and xylanase, respectively with more than 85 % residual activity at 60 °C and pH 6.0. Interestingly, metal ions viz. K+ and Ca2+ stimulated the enzyme activity, whereas Fe2+ and Cu2+ reduced the activity. Significant amounts of hydrophobic compounds, chromophores, and phenolics were released after wastepapers deinking. The deinking efficiency of 73.60 ± 2.45 % and 38.60 ± 1.34 % was obtained for photocopier paper and newspaper, respectively, whereas brightness of 89.90 ± 2.10 % ISO and 44.90 ± 1.63 % ISO was reported for both types of waste papers. The physical strength of deinked photocopier paper and newspapers, i.e., tensile index (3.10 and 0.50 %), tearing index (7.10 and 4.83 %), and burst factor (8.61) were enhanced whereas double fold property was decreased proving wastepaper reusability. This consortium showed effective and significant enzymatic deinking efficiency for recycled wastepapers.
Enhanced treatment of oily ink wastewater using a modified degreaser by nano-Fe3O4/Na2S2O8: Efficient coagulation and sedimentation

Abstract:Ink wastewater is hazardous because it contains oil and refractory pollutants, with high Chroma and turbidity. There are many aromatic compounds in the wastewater, such as benzene, toluene, xylene, and phthalocyanines, azos, and nitroso, which make high chemical oxygen demand (COD) and ammonia nitrogen content. The refractory pollutants are always encapsulated in diverse oil-water systems. Usually a massive degreaser has to be used to destroy the dispersant oil forms under preferred alkaline condition, and advanced oxidation is used for good removal of refractory pollutants under preferred acid condition, which commonly lead to a bad coagulation and sedimentation as a result. In this study, the nano-Fe3O4 (MNPs) activated sodium persulfate (SPS) has been testified to enhance degrease with efficient coagulation and sedimentation. The results showed that the removal of oil, COD, ammonia nitrogen, Chroma and turbidity reached respectively 96.40%, 98.35%, 88.00%, 99.70% and 98.22%, within 40–50 min. The mechanism shows that the catalytic oxidation significantly decreased the Zeta potential of the colloidal particles in the wastewater, which destroyed the steady-state of the colloid and enhanced the effect of coagulation sedimentation. Importantly, the combination of MNPs and colloidal particles successfully promoted the simultaneous production of SO 4 − and a large amount of HO under weakly alkaline (pH = 7.5–8.0) conditions, which made synergistic oxidation to remove micro-oil and organic pollution efficiently.

Pretreatment of DOP industrial wastewater by resin adsorption

Abstract:High concentration DOP wastewater is very difficult to be degraded by conventional treatments and leads to serious harmful to the environment. In this study, resin adsorption was used to pretreat DOP wastewater. The optimal operating conditions for resin adsorption and desorption were investigated. The results showed that the COD removal rate with resin NDA99 reached to 94% under the conditions of room temperature, pH=2, flow rate of 4 BV/h and batch processing volume of 16 BV. The desorption agent of 1 BV 8%NaOH+ 1 BV 4%NaOH+ 2 BVwater was used to regenerate the saturated resin under the conditions of 60°C and desorption flow rate of 1 BV/h. The COD desorption rate was over 97%. The resin exhibited the better adsorption and desorption characteristics.

Abstract:Effective purification of waste water tainted with either immiscible oil/water mixtures or surfactant-stabilized emulsions is always attractive for long-term water remediation. We report here on a versatile development of polydopamine coated copper surfaces on various porous substrates via a simple one-step immersing method. The incorporation of dopamine into this design not only optimizes the operation of preparing simple substances on copper surfaces on a wide range of substrates, but also endows the as-obtained membranes with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity. Such membranes are capable of efficiently separating both immiscible oil/water mixtures and surfactant-stabilized emulsions based on the desired substrates, and they display superior chemical resistance to aggressive reagents, excellent recyclability and robust structural stability, making them promising candidates for a variety of oil filtration applications ranging from the treatment of oil/water mixtures to emulsified oily waste water.

Abstract:On the basis of laboratory research, the industrial experiment enzymatic deinking of old newsprint with cellulase from Aspergillus L22 was carried out and qualified newsprint was produced with 100% enzymatic deinked pulp. Compared with the traditional chemical deinking, the enzymatic deinking can obtain the deinked pulp with higher brightness and lower residual ink. Moreover, the deinking effluent from the enzymatic deinking process has lower COD or BOD content than that from the chemical deinking process.

Abstract:Effluent organic matter (EfOM) is a complex matrix of organic substance mainly from bio-treated sewage effluent and is considered as the main constraint to further advanced treatment. Here a recyclable aminated hyper-cross-linked polymeric adsorbent (NDA-802) featured with aminated functional groups, large specific surface area, and sufficient micropore region was synthesized for effective removal of EfOM from the bio-treated coking wastewater (BTCW), and its removal characteristics was investigated. It was found that hydrophobic fraction was the main constituent (64.8% of DOC) in EfOM of BTCW, and the hydrophobic-neutral fraction had the highest SUVA level (7.06 L mg(-1) m(-1)), which were significantly different from that in the domestic wastewater. Column adsorption experiments showed that NDA-802 exhibited much higher removal efficiency of EfOM than other polymeric adsorbents D-301, XAD-4, and XAD-7, and the efficiency could be readily sustained according to continuous 28-cycle batch adsorption regeneration experiments. Moreover, dissolved organic matter (DOM) fractionation and excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy study indicated that NDA-802 showed attractive adsorption preference as well as high removal efficiency of hydrophobic and aromatic compounds. Possibly ascribed to the presence of functional aminated groups, relatively large specific surface area and micropore region of the unique polymer, NDA-802 possesses high and sustained efficiency for the removal of EfOM, and provides a potential alternative for the advanced treatment. Abstract:As a kind of chemical additives, surfactants are widely used in the processes of papermaking, which played roles of wetting, dispersing, emulsifying etc. to adjust and maintain the product performance. However, there are few reports about the effect of surfactants on fiber properties, especially during paper recycling. This work investigated the effects of three types of surfactants on the cellulosic fibers and paper properties during five-time recycling. Properties of recycled paper with five times were presented as the index of papermaking potential. The results showed that cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB), a cationic surfactant, had an obvious negative effect on paper properties. For continuous surfactant supplements, the burst, tearing, and tensile index decreased by 50.2%, 41.6%, and 43.6%, respectively. Sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), an anionic surfactant, had a significant positive effect on fibers' WRV and inhibited the fibers' hornification to some extent. However, it had a negative effect on paper properties by affecting the bonding between the fibers. Triton X-100 (TX-100), a nonionic surfactant, improved paper properties according to the papermaking potential. For adding surfactant only once, the burst, tearing, and tensile index increased by 15.0%, 8.59%, and 7.2%, respectively. For these three types of surfactants, TX-100 was generally more beneficial for fiber and paper. This paper revealed the effects of surfactants on the fiber and paper properties and perfected the theory of surfactants applied for fiber and paper in papermaking.

Abstract:In view of the high risks brought about by organic micropollutants (OMPs), nanofiltration (NF) processes have been playing a vital role in advanced water and wastewater treatment, owing to the high membrane performance in rejection of OMPs, permeation of water, and passage of mineral salts. Though numerous studies have been devoted to evaluating and technically enhancing membrane performance in removing various OMPs, the trade-off effect between water permeance and water/OMP selectivity for state-of-the-art membranes remains far from being understood. Knowledge of this effect is significant for comparing and guiding membrane development works toward cost-efficient OMP removal. In this work, we comprehensively assessed the performance of 88 NF membranes, commercialized or newly developed, based on their water permeance and OMP rejection data published in the literature. The effectiveness and underlying mechanisms of various modification methods in tailoring properties and in turn performance of the mainstream polyamide (PA) thin-film composite (TFC) membranes were quantitatively analyzed. The trade-off effect was demonstrated by the abundant data from both experimental measurements and machine learning-based prediction. On this basis, the advancement of novel membranes was benchmarked by the performance upper-bound revealed by commercial membranes and lab-made PA membranes. We also assessed the potentials of current NF membranes in selectively separating OMPs from inorganic salts and identified the future research perspectives to achieve further enhancement in OMP removal and salt/OMP selectivity of NF membranes.
An amphiphilic flocculant with a lignin core for efficient separation of suspended solids

Abstract:The synthesis and application of conventional polymeric flocculants suffer from low flocculation efficiency and toxic residues; therefore, there is an urgent need to develop green and efficient flocculants and corresponding technologies. An amphiphilic copolymer (NPL) was synthesized by a "grafting to" strategy, using acrylamide, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride, and kraft lignin. NPL consists of a lignin core that is attached to a polyacrylamide branched chain and a cationic group, and has the properties of an amphoteric polyelectrolyte. This structure demonstrates superior flocculation performance on suspended solids. Two typical clay suspensions, kaolin and bentonite, were selected to evaluate the flocculation performance of NPL. The results showed that the turbidity of kaolin and bentonite could be reduced to 2.08 NTU and 0.31 NTU, respectively, by using NPL in combination with polymeric aluminum chloride. The synergistic effect of charge neutralization and bridging was confirmed as the main mechanism of flocculation on the two clay suspensions by a series of characterization techniques, such as zeta potential determination, particle size analysis, and focused beam reflectance measurement. The treatment of high-turbidity wastewater/feedwater with NPL was investigated, and was found to significantly improve the effluent quality. The use of NPL is efficient, environmentally friendly, and technically feasible, and shows excellent potential for the treatment of wastewater.
