Abstract:We studied the spatial overlap between Microtus brandti and Ochotona daurica in the Inner Mongolian steppes from 1991 to 1994. Both vole and pika populations fluctuated over time, but vole population density changed more drastically than did that of pika populations. The spatial overlap between voles and pikas in the spring did not differ from that in the fall (P > 0.05). The mean crowding of pikas was positively related to pika population density (P = 0.007), whereas the mean crowding of the voles was not related to the density of voles (P > 0.05). The mean crowding of pikas in the fall was greater than that in the spring (P < 0.05). Similarly, the density of pika populations in the fall was also greater than that in the spring. Therefore, the seasonal changes in density might result in the seasonal difference in the spatial pattern of pikas. The colony breakup of the voles in the fall might influence the spatial pattern of voles. More detailed studies on the mating system and sex-specific spacing behavior are needed to understand the spatial pattern of voles and pikas.
