Abstract:The recent experiment results during electron cyclotron resonance hearing (ECRH) on HL-2A tokamak are presented in this paper. During ECRH with a series of the supersonic molecular beam injection (SMBI) pulse fueling, the plasma storage energy WE, D p, line averaged density n(e) and "fusion neutron" count increase, leading to the plasma confinement improved. Furthermore, the non-local transport phenomena induced by SMBI have been firstly observed in HL-2A tokamak. The non-local effect induced by SMBI in HL-2A lasts much longer than that induced by pellet injection in other similar size tokamak, both the bolometer radiation and the Ha emission decrease when the non-local effect appears. It indicates that an electron transport barrier has possibly been formed at the position just outside the q = 1 surface during this phase. In addition, the delayed core soft x-ray intensity decrease has been observed after ECRH switch-off, while the edge soft X-ray intensity decreases just after the ECRH switch off. The study shows transport coefficient reduces at all radii just after the off-axis ECRH switch off especially near the heating deposition location, Moreover, various types of sawteeth activities during ECRH experiment are investigated, and the relationship between the sawtooth period and the power deposition location has been studied.
On the Upper Bound of Non-Thermal Fusion Reactivity with Fixed Total Energy

Abstract:Fusion reactivity represents the integration of fusion cross-sections and the velocity distributions of two reactants. In this study, we investigate the upper bound of fusion reactivity for a non-thermal reactant coexisting with a thermal Maxwellian background reactant while maintaining a constant total energy. Our optimization approach involves fine-tuning the velocity distribution of the non-thermal reactant. We employ both Lagrange multiplier and Monte Carlo methods to analyze Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) and Proton-Boron11 (p-B11) fusion scenarios. Our findings demonstrate that, within the relevant range of fusion energy, the maximum fusion reactivity can often surpass that of the conventional Maxwellian-Maxwellian reactants case by a substantial margin, ranging from 50\% to 300\%. These enhancements are accompanied by distinctive distribution functions for the non-thermal reactant, characterized by one or multiple beams. These results not only establish an upper limit for fusion reactivity but also provide valuable insights into augmenting fusion reactivity through non-thermal fusion, which holds particular significance in the realm of fusion energy research.

Calculation of Energetic Ion Tail from Ion Cyclotron Resonance Frequency Heating

Abstract:The second harmonic frequency of hydrogen ion cyclotron resonance heating experiment on HT-6M tokamak was studied by adding the quasi-linear wave-ion interaction term in the two-dimensional (velocity space), time-dependent, nonlinear and multi-species Fokker-Planck equation. The temporal evolution of ion distribution function and relevant parameters were calculated and compared with experiment data. The calculation shows that the ion temperature increases, high-energy ion tail (above 5 keV) and anisotropy appear when the wave is injected to plasma. The simulations are in reasonable agreement with experimental data.

Abstract:By numerically solving the tow-dimensional time-dependent non-linear Fokker-Planck equations, the distribution functions are calculated and the D-T fusion reactivity are evaluated. For the tritium parallel injection case, the reactivity variation induced by the non-Maxwellian distribution is analyzed. It is pointed out that it is appropriate to define. The calculation resutlts show that η increases from 1 to maximum and then decreases during NBI heating. Either high input power or high beam energy can make η to decrease to a value less than 1. When η decreases to 1, Ｔ∥Ｔ is raised to about 10keV.

Abstract:Accurate knowledge of the equation of state (EOS) of deuterium–tritium (DT) mixtures is critically important for inertial confinement fusion (ICF). Although the study of EOS is an old topic, there is a longstanding lack of global accurate EOS data for DT within a unified theoretical framework. DT fuel goes through very wide ranges of density and temperature from a cold condensed state to a hot dense plasma where ions are in a moderately or even strongly coupled state and electrons are in a partially or strongly degenerate state. The biggest challenge faced when using first-principles methods for obtaining accurate EOS data for DT fuel is the treatment of electron–ion interactions and the extremely high computational cost at high temperatures. In the present work, we perform extensive state-of-the-art ab initio quantum Langevin molecular dynamics simulations to obtain EOS data for DT mixtures at densities from 0.1 g/cm3 to 2000 g/cm3 and temperatures from 500 K to 2000 eV, which are relevant to ICF processes. Comparisons with average-atom molecular dynamics and orbital-free molecular dynamics simulations show that the ionic strong-coupling effect is important for determining the whole-range EOS. This work can supply accurate EOS data for DT mixtures within a unified ab initio framework, as well as providing a benchmark for various semiclassical methods.

Abstract:We revisit the assumption that reactors based on deuterium-deuterium (D-D) fusion processes have to be necessarily developed after the successful completion of experiments and demonstrations for deuterium-tritium (D-T) fusion reactors. Two possible mechanisms for enhancing the reactivity are discussed. Hard tails in the energy distribution of the nuclei, through the so-called kappa-distribution, allow to boost the number of energetic nuclei available for fusion reactions. At higher temperatures than usually considered in D-T plasmas, vacuum polarization effects from real $e^+e^-$ and $\mu^+\mu^-$ pairs may provide further speed-up due to their contribution to screening of the Coulomb barrier. Furthermore, the energy collection system can benefit from the absence of the lithium blanket, both in simplicity and compactness. The usual thermal cycle can be bypassed with comparable efficiency levels using hadronic calorimetry and third-generation photovoltaic cells, possibly allowing to extend the use of fusion reactors to broader contexts, most notably maritime transport.

Abstract:If electron cyclotron wave is adopted for heating of D-He-3 advanced fuel fusion plasma, it makes the latter operate at elevated electron temperature. Under these circumstances, some new physical processes, such as nuclear-nuclear elastic scattering, nuclear plus Coulomb interference scattering, secondary reaction propagation between the fusion products and bulk Maxwellian ions, become relatively more pronounced. However the Coulomb-interactions between fusion produced energetic ions and electrons turn to be weakening, a fraction of bulk Maxwellian fuel ions will be shifted to super-hot tail ions in their distribution functions, hence D-He-3 fusion reactivity may be enhanced. The energy transfer of these new mechanisms is highlighted in this paper.

Abstract:Sheared flow increases the reactivity of fusion plasma. In unmagnetized DT plasma with flow gradients comparable to the mean free path of reacting ions, reactivity can be more than doubled. Neutron spectra are modified, helping to explain anomalous observations. The reactivity enhancement is particularly relevant in inertial confinement fusion (ICF), where it allows turbulent kinetic energy to contribute to the fusion burn even before thermalizing. In high-yield ICF experiments, the effect is most pronounced before bang time, suggesting a new mechanism for fast ignition.

Abstract:In inertial confinement fusion implosions, tertiary reaction-in-flight processes create deuterium-tritium fusion reactions [T(d,n)4He] with an incident particle moving at MeV energies instead of the thermonuclear keV temperatures. Additional relativistic kinematic treatments were added to a nuclear resonance code, spect , and resulting calculations showed an upshifting of the deuterium-tritium fusion γ -ray pathway [T(d,γ)5He] for MeV interactions. Abstract:We first show a possible mechanism to create a new type of nuclear fusion, thermal resonance fusion, i.e. low energy nuclear fusion with thermal resonance of light nuclei or atoms, such as deuterium or tritium. The fusion of two light nuclei has to overcome the Coulomb barrier between these two nuclei to reach up to the interacting region of nuclear force. We found nuclear fusion could be realized with thermal vibrations of crystal lattice atoms coupling with light atoms at low energy by resonance to overcome this Coulomb barrier. Thermal resonances combining with tunnel effects can greatly enhance the probability of the deuterium fusion to the detectable level. Our low energy nuclear fusion mechanism research - thermal resonance fusion mechanism results demonstrate how these light nuclei or atoms, such as deuterium, can be fused in the crystal of metal, such as Ni or alloy, with synthetic thermal vibrations and resonances at different modes and energies experimentally. The probability of tunnel effect at different resonance energy given by the WKB method is shown that indicates the thermal resonance fusion mode, especially combined with the tunnel effect, is possible and feasible. But the penetrating probability decreases very sharply when the input resonance energy decreases less than 3 keV, so for thermal resonance fusion, the key point is to increase the resonance peak or make the resonance sharp enough to the acceptable energy level by the suitable compound catalysts, and it is better to reach up more than 3 keV to make the penetrating probability larger than 10^{-10}.

Abstract:Measurements of ion cyclotron emission (ICE) are obtained from most large magnetically confined fusion (MCF) plasma experiments, and may be used in future to quantify properties of the fusion-born alpha-particle population in deuterium-tritium (DT) plasmas in ITER. ICE is driven by spatially localised, strongly non-Maxwellian, minority energetic ion populations which relax collectively under the magnetoacoustic cyclotron instability (MCI). ICE spectral peaks are typically observed at, near, or separated by, integer harmonics of the energetic ion cyclotron frequency. Here, for the first time, we study how simulated ICE spectra from DT plasmas vary with tritium concentration and compare with an observed JET DT ICE spectrum. We incorporate a population of thermal tritons, in addition to thermal deuterons and an energetic minority population of fusion-born alpha-particles, in simulations with the kinetic particle-in-cell (PIC) code EPOCH. This code has previously been used extensively for interpretation of ICE observations in terms of the self-consistent gyro-resolved collective Maxwell-Lorentz dynamics of tens of millions of simulation particles. Our simulation parameters are relevant to the ICE-generative outer midplane edge region of JET DT plasma 26148, which included 11% tritium. Quantifying the variation of simulated ICE power spectra with tritium concentration reveals that our simulation with 11% tritium concentration most accurately represents the observed ICE spectrum from this plasma. This outcome is encouraging for the diagnostic application of ICE to fusion plasmas containing two thermal ion species, including future DT plasmas.

Abstract:Efficient ion heating is crucial for future fusion devices, and the only way to heat ions directly is ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH). Reported here is a full wave solver integrated with a Fokker–Planck code for optimizing ion heating with ion cyclotron range of frequency waves for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER)deuterium-tritium plasma. Both the direct absorption of minority ions and the power transfer to bulk ions via collisions are considered, while also accounting for the edge effects on ion absorption near the core. The simulation results show that the appropriate scrape-off layer density profile and parallel wave number lead to enhanced edge coupling and broaden the absorption region with moderate absorption intensity of the minority ions, which is very important for ion heating. More power from the heated ions is transferred to bulk ions than to electrons through collisions in our simulation via optimization, and reducing the total RF power results in a significant increase of the absorbed fraction of bulk ions.

Abstract:Thermonuclear fusion reactivity is a pivotal quantity in the studies pertaining to fusion energy production, fusion ignition and energy break-even analysis in both inertially and magnetically confined systems. Although nuclear fusion reactivity and thereafter the power density of a magnetic confinement fusion reactor and the fulfillment of the ignition criterion are quantitatively determined by assuming the ion speed distribution to be Maxwellian, a significant population of suprathermal ions,with energy greater than the quasi-Maxwellian background plasma temperature, is generated by the fusion reactions and auxiliary heating in the fusion devices. In the current work 3-parameter Dagum speed distribution has been introduced to include the effect of suprathermal ion population in the calculation of total fusion reactivity. The extent of enhancement in the fusion reactivity, at different back-ground temperatures of the fusion fuel plasma, due to the suprathermal ion population has also been discussed.

Abstract:The fusion reactions involving deuterium are of great interest for the exploitation of the fusion energy via magnetic-confinement devices. In classical thermodynamics, the spontaneity of a process is established through the assessment of the change in Gibbs free energy. So far, the feasibility of nuclear reactions has been characterized in terms of cross section and Q-value while the entropic term (T ΔS) has been neglected. Such an assumption is always justified for fission reactions where the term ΔS is positive. In the case of fusion reactions that operate at very high temperatures (106–107 K) and where ΔS is negative, the change in Gibbs free energy may be positive, making the reaction non-spontaneous. This paper proposes a classical thermodynamic analysis of D-based reactions of interest for the magnetic-confinement fusion applications. The entropy contribution was evaluated via the Sackur–Tetrode equation while the change in enthalpy was considered constant and as corresponding to the Q-value of the fusion reaction. The results of the thermodynamic analysis are compared with nuclear reaction feasibility criteria based on the reaction reactivity. The DT and D3He reactions show a high degree of spontaneity although the second one presents a lower reactivity. An increase in temperature could enhance the reactivity of the D3He reaction at the cost of decreasing its thermodynamic spontaneity. Both branches of the DD reaction are characterized by a much lower thermodynamic spontaneity than that of the DT and D3He reactions. Furthermore, at the temperature of their maximum cross section, the DD reactions exhibit a largely positive change in Gibbs free energy and, therefore, are not spontaneous. At the temperature of magnetic-confinement fusion machines (1.5 × 108 K), among the D-based reactions studied, the DT one exhibits the highest degrees of spontaneity and reactivity.

Abstract:The nuclear fusion data for deuteron-triton resonance near 100 keV are found to be consistent with the selective resonant tunneling model. The feature of this selective resonant tunneling is the selectivity. It selects not only the energy level, but also the damping rate (nuclear reaction rate). When the Coulomb barrier is thin and low, the resonance selects the fast reaction channel; however, when the Coulomb barrier is thick and high, the resonance selects the slow reaction channel. This mechanism might open an approach toward fusion energy with no strong nuclear radiation.

Abstract:An accurate equation of state for deuterium-tritium mixture is of crucial importance in inertial confinement fusion. The equation of state can determine the compressibility of the imploding target and the energy deposited into the fusion fuel. In the present work, a new deuterium-tritium equation of state, which is calculated according to quantum molecular dynamic and orbital free molecular dynamic simulations, has been used to study the target implosion hydrodynamics. The results indicate that the peak density predicted by the new equation of state is ∼10% higher than the quotidian equation of state data. During the implosion, the areal density and neutron yield are also discussed.
Experimental Study on Deuterium-Deuterium Thermonuclear Fusion with Interface Confinement

Abstract:Nuclear fusion is recognized as the energy of the future, and huge efforts and capitals have been put into the research of controlled nuclear fusion in the past decades. The most challenging thing for controlled nuclear fusion is to generate and keep a super high temperature. Here, a sonication system, combining with micro-scale fluid control techniques, was built to generate cavitation within a limited region. As bubbles being rapidly compressed, high temperature plasma generated interior leads to particle emissions, where a Cs2LiYCl6: Ce3+ (CLYC) scintillator was used to collect the emission events. The pulse shape discrimination methods applied on captured signals revealed that only gamma ray events were observed in sonication with normal water as excepted, while obvious separation of neutron and gamma ray events was surprisingly identified in sonication with deuterated water. This result suggested that neutrons were emitted from the sonicated deuterated water, i.e. deuterium-deuterium thermonuclear fusion was initiated. This study provides an alternative and feasible approach to achieve controllable nuclear fusion and makes great sense for future researches on the application of fusion energy.

Enhancement of Fusion Reactivity under Non-Maxwellian Distributions: Effects of Drift-Ring-Beam, Slowing-Down, and Kappa Super-Thermal Distributions

Abstract:Non-Maxwellian distributions of particles are commonly observed in fusion studies, especially for magnetic confinement fusion plasmas. The particle distribution has a direct effect on fusion reactivity, which is the focus of this study. We investigate the effects of three types of non-Maxwellian distributions, namely drift-ring-beam, slowing-down, and kappa super-thermal distributions, on the fusion reactivities of D-T (Deuterium-Trillium) and p-B11 (proton-Boron) using a newly developed program, where the enhancement of fusion reactivity relative to the Maxwellian distribution is computed while keeping the total kinetic energy constant. The calculation results show that for the temperature ranges of interest to us, namely 5-50 keV for D-T and 100-500 keV for p-B11, these non-Maxwellian distributions can enhance the fusion reactivities. In the case of the drift-ring-beam distribution, the enhancement factors for both reactions are affected by the perpendicular ring beam velocity, leading to decreased enhancement in low temperature range and increased enhancement in high temperature range. However, this effect is favorable for p-B11 fusion reaction and unfavorable for D-T fusion reaction. In the slowing-down distribution, the birth speed plays a crucial role in both reactions, and increasing birth speed leads to a shift in the enhancement ranges towards lower temperatures, which is beneficial for both reactions. Finally, the kappa super-thermal distribution results in a relatively large enhancement in the low temperature range with a small high energy power-law index {\kappa}. Overall, this study provides insight into the effects of non-Maxwellian distributions on fusion reactivity and highlights potential opportunities for enhancing fusion efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract Ion cyclotron resonance heating (ICRH) stands out as a widely utilized and cost-effective auxiliary method for plasma heating, bearing significant importance in achieving high-performance discharges in p-11B plasmas. In light of the specific context of p-11B plasma in the EHL-2 device, we conducted a comprehensive scan of the fundamental physical parameters of the antenna using the full-wave simulation program TORIC. Our preliminary research indicates that for p-11B plasma, optimal ion heating parameters include a frequency of 40 MHz, with a high toroidal mode number like Nφ =28 to heat majority H ions. Additionally, we discussed the impact of minority concentration variation on ion cyclotron resonance heating when 11B serves as the heavy species minority. The significant difference in charge-to-mass ratio between boron and hydrogen ions results in a considerable distance between the hybrid resonance layer and the cyclotron resonance layer, necessitating a quite low boron ion concentration to achieve effective minority heating. We also considers another method of directly heating hydrogen ions in the presence of boron ion minority. It is found that at appropriate boron ion concentrations (X( 11 B)=16%), the position of the hybrid resonance layer approaches that of the hydrogen ion cyclotron resonance layer, thereby altering the polarization at this position and significantly enhancing hydrogen ion fundamental absorption.

Abstract:The impact of the mass isotope on plasma confinement and transport properties has been investigated in Ohmically-heated hydrogen and deuterium plasmas in the HL-2A tokamak.Experimental results show that under similar discharge parameters the deuterium plasma has better confinement and lower turbulent transport than the hydrogen one,and concomitantly,it is found that the magnitude of geodesic acoustic mode zonal flows,the tilting angle of the Reynolds stress tensor and the turbulence correlation lengths are all larger in the edge region of the deuterium plasma.The results provide direct experimental evidence on the importance of the nonlinear energy coupling between ambient turbulence and zonal flows for governing the isotope effects in fusion plasmas.
