Abstract:Aim. To study the curative effect of electromyographic biofeedback in psychosomatic disease in department of neurology using electromyogram. Methods. Eighty-four patients, including 50 cases with neurosis, 18 males and 32 females, aged 38 ± 14, and 34 cases with tension headache, 10 males and 24 females, aged 39 ± 10, were taught to observe the myotonic potential and to listen to the voice thus made and then learned to contract and relax their muscles so as to decrease the myoelectric signal. They were asked to continue such practice at home twice a day for 1 month. Eighty sex, age, and course-matched patients, 50 with neurosis and 30 with tension headache, were used as controls treated only with pharmacotherapy. Before and after the study, SCL-90 was used to evaluate the patients in the 2 groups. Results. For neurosis, the total effective rate was 98% in the treatment group and 87% in the control group, the cure rate was 36% and 22% in the 2 groups, the notable rate was 50% and 35% in the 2 group respectively, the improvement rate was 12% and 30% for the 2 groups respectively, and the ineffective rate was 2% and 13% for the 2 groups respectively (X 2 = 21.07, P < 0.05). For tension headache the total effective rate was 100% in the treatment group and 82% in the control group, the cure rate was 53% and 15% in the 2 groups, the notable rate was 41% and 25% in the 2 group respectively, the improvement rate was 6% and 42% for the 2 groups respectively, and the ineffective rate was 0 and 18% for the 2 groups respectively (X 2 = 70.114, P < 0.05). The scores of somatization, obsession, depression, anxiety, interpersonal sensitization, and terror of the patients were significantly higher than those of the normal model before treatment. However, after treatment these scores, except that of psychotic symptom, were significantly lowered in the treatment group in comparison with those of the control group (t = 3.240 5, P < 0.01). Conclusion. Electromyographic biofeedback therapy relieves effectively tension, anxiety and depression, helps treat tension headache and neurosis significantly, and finds a new use for electromyogram in disease treatment.
