A Clinical Epidemiology Study of the Association Between TT Virus and Hepatitis

Abstract:Objective TT virus (TTV) is a novel DNA virus discovered in Japan from a post transfusion non A to G hepatitis patient, but the pathogenic role of TTV in hepatitis is still far from clear yet, nor is the relation of TTV with other well known hepatitis virus. This study was focused on these problems in terms of clinical epidemiology. Methods The study objects comprised 259 cases with all kinds of hepatitis, 163 healthy people and 58 hepatocellular carcinoma cases in Minnan area. Nested PCR was used to detect TTV DNA in sera, while enzyme linked. immunoabsorbtion assay was used to detect anti HAV IgM, HBsAg, anti HBc IgM, anti HCV IgG, and anti HEV IgG in sera. Results The total detection rate of TTV DNA in these 480 objects was 23.96%. The TTV positive rate was 23.94% in all hepatitis, 20.69% in hepatocellular carcinoma cases, 24.84% in healthy checkups and 30.00% in blood donors. In view of clinical catalogiu, no difference of TTV positive rate was found in acute hepatitis, chronic hepatitis and fulminant hepatic failure, and they all showed a TTV positive rate around 25%. In view of pathogenic agents, we also could not find any significant difference of TTV prevalence in non A to G hepatitis (26.19%), hepatitis A (20.00%), hepatitis B (23.14%), hepatitis E (21.79%), and healthy people who had no infection markers of hepatitis virus A to E (25.23%). The hepatitis C was very few in this area, so it was not calculated in this study. To discount the case selection bias, we invested all hospitalized hepatitis cases during a short period, which comprised 135 hepatitis cases. While the positive rate of HAV, HBV and HEV were all significantly higher than that of healthy controls, the positive rate of TTV was not higher in hepatitis patients. Conclusion These results suggest strongly that the TTV is unlikely to be the pathogen that causes non A to E hepatitis.
