Abstract:Propagation of electromagnetic waves in a piezoelectric superlattice is studied. Because of the piezoelectric effect, a coupling between two orthogonally polarized electromagnetic waves is induced by the superlattice vibration. As a consequence of the strong coupling, two types of polariton modes are found: one is supported in the band gap while the other prohibited. This unusual coupling effect is not present in classical lattices.

Abstract:The phonon-polariton dispersion relation is calculated in the piezoelectric superlattice (PSL). In this specific case, the coupling could take place not only between the electromagnetic (EM) waves (photons) and the transverse superlattice vibrations (transverse phonons), but also between the EM waves and the longitudinal superlattice vibrations (longitudinal phonons), which gives rise to two types of phonon polaritons. It differs with the case in an ionic crystal, where the phonon polariton could only originate from the coupling between transverse lattice vibrations (transverse optical phonons) and EM waves. The two types of phonon polaritons are experimentally observed in the one-dimensional PSL with a periodicity of micrometer scale, corresponding to the frequency region of microwave. The PSL is based on a congruent lithium tantalite (LiTaO3) crystal and fabricated by the method of electric field poling at room temperature. Both microwave absorption and dielectric abnormality are observed and the sizes of band gaps are measured for the two types of phonon polaritons.

Abstract:We studied the propagation of an electromagnetic (EM) wave in a piezoelectric superlattice. Because of the piezoelectric effect, a transverse polarization can be induced by a longitudinal wave which couples strongly to the EM wave in some particular frequency regions, resulting in the creation of a new type of polariton that does not exist in ionic crystals. The forbidden band associated with the polariton is not due to the Bragg reflection, but rather to the coupling.

Abstract:The piezo-phototronic effect, a three way coupling effect of piezoelectric, semiconductor and photonic properties in non-central symmetric semiconductor materials, utilizing the piezo-potential as a "gate'' voltage to tune the charge transport/generation/recombination and modulate the performance of optoelectronic devices, has formed a new field and attracted lots of interest recently. The mechanism was verified in various optoelectronic devices such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), photodetectors and solar cells etc. The fast development and dramatic increasing interest in the piezo-phototronic field not only demonstrate the way the piezo-phototronic effects work, but also indicate the strong need for further research in the physical mechanism and potential applications. Furthermore, it is important to distinguish the contribution of the piezo-phototronic effect from other factors induced by external strain such as piezoresistance, band shifting or contact area change, which also affect the carrier behaviour and device performance. In this perspective, we review our recent progress on piezo-phototronics and especially focus on pointing out the features of piezo-phototronic effect in four aspects: I-V characteristics; c-axis orientation; influence of illumination; and modulation of carrier behaviour. Finally we proposed several criteria for describing the contribution made by the piezo-phototronic effect to the performance of optoelectronic devices. This systematic analysis and comparison will not only help give an in-depth understanding of the piezo-phototronic effect, but also work as guide for the design of devices in related areas.

Abstract:The polaritonlike excitations in piezoelectric-modulated superlattices are Studied systematically by combining the plane wave expansion method and transfer matrix method, these two complementary methods yield the full band structures of the system and mode-coupling information with the external incident waves, Both the band structures and transmission spectra are calculated and analyzed for superlattices made of LiNbO3. and the polaritonlike band gap (divided by midgap frequency) of 19% is found in the computed transmission spectra of electromagnetic wave. Furthermore, our study shows that the transmission spectra depend sensitively on the sample thickness and the well defined polaritonlike band gap takes shape only when the number of periods exceeds 10 000. Our results offer a natural explanation as to why previous experiments failed to observe the gap in a sample with 250 periods.

Abstract:Propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in a piezoelectric-piezomagnetic superlattice (PPS) has been investigated. In a PPS, the electric and magnetic vectors of EM waves could simultaneously couple with the identical superlattice vibration, respectively, due to piezoelectric effect and piezomagnetic effect, which results in magnetoelectric effect. Consequently, two orthogonally polarized EM waves could simultaneously couple with the identical vibration, which would give birth to coupled phonon polaritons. Attributed to this mechanism, in a PPS, the propagation of EM waves varies drastically. EM waves perpendicular to the PPS vector can propagate, while the propagation is inhibited along the PPS vector in the original band gap of either the piezoelectric superlattice or the piezomagnetic superlattice. The origin of the differences in propagation is analyzed and some potential applications are discussed.

Abstract:Piezomagnetic materials are characterized by strong coupling between magnetization and acoustic vibration and the piezomagnetic coefficients change sign with respect to domain polarization. For piezomagnetic superlattices (PMSL) with periodically up and down polarized domain structures, the piezomagnetic coefficients are modulated periodically, and the resulting phonon-polaritons form a band-like structure. This study, using the generalized transfer matrix method, shows that a polariton-like band-gap can be realized in piezomagnetic material with the 6mm point group under a certain configuration of magnetic field, lattice displacement and domain polarization, but the mid-gap frequency is restricted to the range of a few GHz or below if the domain wall effect is taken into consideration.

Abstract:Propagation of phonon polaritons in a nonaxial aligned one-dimensional piezoelectric superlattice is studied theoretically. Because of the piezoelectric effect, both transverse and longitudinal superlattice vibrations are induced by one transverse polarized electromagnetic wave. Due to the coupling effect, two orthogonal modes of elliptically polarized polaritons are present with different propagation properties and can be tuned by the rotation angle. Abstract:Electro-magneto-acoustic SH waves propagating oblique to the periodic layered piezoelectric structures are studied under the coupling of the acoustic wave and the electromagnetic wave. Band structures of the so-called piezoelectric superlattice and phononic/photonic crystal are given both at acoustic frequencies and at optical frequencies. For the periodic layered piezoelectric structures, phonon-polaritons (the coupling modes of the phonons and photons) are found not only happening near the center of the Brillouin zone (in the long-wavelength limit) at acoustic frequencies, but also being able to appear in the whole Brillouin zone at optical frequencies. Appearing of these phonon-polaritons may provide a way to design a new type of acousto-optic devices.

Abstract:The piezoelectric superlattice (PSL) consisting of periodically inverted ferro- electric domains is a special kind of artificially microstructured material. Similar to the ionic crystals, the strong coupling between the electromagnetic wave and superlattice vibration of PSL may generate the phonon polariton. In this paper, by starting with the piezoelectric equations and classic motion equation, the gap between the artificial and classic lattices has been bridged, where a set of Huang-Kun (HK)-like equations were established and can be shared by both systems. Our results also show that the coupling between the photon and longitudinal “optical” phonon, which is not present in a real crystal, is dominated by the HK-like equations. The connection between the two seemingly different systems suggests that they are governed by a common physics.

Abstract:The polaritonic band structures and transmission spectra of piezoelectric-modulated superlattices are investigated for a variety of supercell configurations. In the absence of a defect layer a polaritonic-like band gap exists and relative band gap can reach as large as 19% for superlattices made of LiNbO3. In the presence of a defect layer, the positions and number of defect modes can be controlled directly by the number of domains in a supercell, the widths of defect modes are determined by layer thickness difference between defect domain and the periodic domain. Such uniformly distributed in-gap modes make them ideal candidates for the potential multiband filters.

Abstract:Flexoelectricity describes the linear response of electrical polarization to a strain gradient, which can be used to enhance the piezoelectric effect of piezoelectric material or realize the piezoelectric effect in nonpiezoelectric materials. Here, we demonstrate from thermodynamics theory that a giant piezoelectric effect exists in piezoelectric/dielectric superlattices due to flexoelectric effect. The apparent piezoelectric coefficient is calculated from the closed-form of analytical expression of the polarization distribution in the piezoelectric/dielectric superlattice subjected to a normal stress, in which the flexoelectric effect is included. It is found that there exists a strong nonlinear coupling between the flexoelectric and piezoelectric effects, which significantly enhances the apparent piezoelectric coefficient in the piezoelectric/dielectric superlattice. For a specific thickness ratio of the piezoelectric and dielectric layers, the enhanced apparent piezoelectric coefficient in the superlattice is ten times larger than that of its pure piezoelectric counterpart. The present work suggests an effective way to obtain giant apparent piezoelectric effect in piezoelectric/dielectric superlattices through flexoelectric effect.
Strong Coupling of Rydberg Atoms and Surface Phonon Polaritons on Piezoelectric Superlattices.

Abstract:We propose a hybrid quantum system where the strong coupling regime can be achieved between a Rydberg atomic ensemble and propagating surface phonon polaritons on a piezoelectric superlattice. By exploiting the large electric dipole moment and long lifetime of Rydberg atoms as well as tightly confined surface phonon polariton modes, it is possible to achieve a coupling constant far exceeding the relevant decay rates. The frequency of the surface mode can be selected so that it is resonant with a Rydberg transition by engineering the piezoelectric superlattice. We describe a way to observe the Rabi splitting associated with the strong coupling regime under realistic experimental conditions. The system can be viewed as a new type of optomechanical system.

Abstract:We design a magneto-electro-elastic piezoelectric phononic crystal (MPPC) using a one-dimensional piezoelectric superlattice (with a 3m point group) and split-ring resonators. The effect of the split-ring resonators is to enhance the piezoelectric effect of the piezoelectric superlattices. This effect will create elastic anomalies and generate the phononic band gaps. These are first proposed theoretically. We calculate the transmission function of the MPPC through Transfer Matrix Method of the phononic crystal. By using the transmission function, we theoretically study the propagation properties of the acoustic waves in the MPPC. The mechanism for multifield coupling is analyzed. A type of phononic band gap is created, called the multifield coupling phononic band gap. We analyze the possibility of crystals as left-handed metamaterials. We also discuss some potential applications.

Abstract:We study the propagation of electromagnetic waves in piezoelectric Thue-Morse (TM) superlattices using the generalized 4x4 transfer matrix method, and the dynamics of electromagnetic wave and acoustic wave are treated on equal footing. For coupled polaritonic branch, the band-gap structures, except some major gaps, show bifurcation pattern, which is mutually confirmed from the band structures obtained with periodic boundary condition and from transmission spectra. For higher-order TM superlattices and for some of the specified frequencies, the latticelike field distributions are also found for the coupled polaritonic branch, while Bloch-wavelike distribution is always found for the uncoupled phononic branch. The property of extended states can be explained similarly within the framework of a correlated disorder (clustering effect), but the rule is different from that of the purely electronic, dielectric, or elastic problems studied previously.

Abstract:The scaling and localization properties of polaritonic states in piezoelectric Fibonacci superlattices are studied using the generalized 4x4 transfer matrix method. The dynamics of electromagnetic waves and acoustic waves is treated on equal footing. Both polaritonic band structures and transmission spectra possess the pattern of the Cantorset with respect to generations. The scaling parameter alpha'=4.236 is in agreement with the previous studies on pure electronic and phononic Fibonacci superlattices. Furthermore, the fractal nature of the transmission spectra serves as a proof for the (quasi)localization of polaritons which should be observable in experiments.

Abstract:A piezoelectric–piezomagnetic superlattice (PPS) is proposed to present the magneto-electric (ME) coupling wherein electric polarization induces magnetization or vice versa through the layer's coherent strain. We reveal that in PPS, the interaction of electromagnetic waves with the correspondent alternative piezoelectric and piezomagnetic superlattices through their vibrations excites the piezoelectric and the piezomagnetic phonon polaritons simultaneously. The polaritons couple with each other to give rise to a stop band, in which double negative permittivity and permeability can be realized, however negative refraction could not occur. The coupling also results in the huge dynamic ME effect which attributes to the large ME voltage coefficient in a BaTiO3–CoFe2O4 superlattice as large as 14.9 V cm−1 Oe−1.
