The fluctuant characteristics of natural wind and mechanical wind are obviously different. However, the fluctuant characteristics of mechanical wind can shift to those of natural wind in some conditions. With the development of turbulence statistical theory, chaos and fractal theory, researchers began to use these theories to describe the structural characteristics of the fluctuating airflow in different environments or by different generating sources. The results of studies on airflow fluctuation and thermal environment are reviewed in this paper from two aspects: 1) the effect of the airflow fluctuations on thermal comfort, and 2) the physical structure of airflow fluctuations. This paper first reviews these achievements, and then summarizes studies conducted at Tsinghua University.

The results show that the characteristic parameters of the mechanical airflow, such as power spectrum, change regularly with the distance from the fan supply terminal. The phenomenon is summarized and explained in the paper.

Abstract:Airflow fluctuation is an important factor affecting indoor thermal environments and human thermal response. In this study, dynamic airflows with different fluctuation characteristics were generated by a dynamic air supply terminal. The influence of three different kinds of airflows, constant airflow, simulated natural airflow and sinusoidal airflow, on thermal comfort was studied. Subjective experiments indicated that a dynamic airflow can cause a stronger cold sensation, and that air movement with 1/f fluctuations similar to natural wind is more acceptable than other dynamic airflows in warm environments. Moreover, the impact of draughts in dynamic airflows on human thermal response is different in neutral-warm (30 degrees C) and cool-neutral (26 degrees C) thermal environments.

Abstract:Since the 1990s, more and more attention is paid to dynamic thermal environment. As a dynamic factor, airflow has great effect on human thermal response. Rational utilization of airflow can increase the set temperature indoor so as to save energy dramatically. Extensive studies have been done concerning the effect of turbulence intensity and fluctuation frequency on human thermal response. This study aimed at getting the fluctuation-perceptible range of airflow frequency and studying the effect of fluctuation on thermal response. In the study, sinusoidal airflows with different fluctuation frequencies were generated by a dynamic air supply terminal. Subjective experiments were carried out at 28°C and the results showed the fluctuation-perceptible zone of frequency was between 0.2 and 1.3 Hz. It was also indicated that fluctuation had stronger cooling effect on human body which could be used in improving thermal sensation in warm environment.

Abstract:In the past 60–70 years, a lot of thermal comfort studies have examined the effects of air movement on human comfort. Previous research has shown that besides air velocity and turbulence intensity, airflow fluctuation frequency is also important for the perception of thermal environment. In the current study, a dynamic air supply terminal was used to generate sinusoidally varying airflows with different fluctuation frequencies. Subjective climate chamber experiments were carried out at both 28°C and 30°C, and the results showed that the perceptible range of fluctuation frequency was between approximately 0.2 and 1.5Hz. The subjective thermal response results indicated that airflows of 0.5 and 1.0Hz had a stronger cooling effect on subjects. The air velocity fluctuating frequency identified in the present study confirmed previous findings and was around 0.5Hz. The results also indicated that proper application of airflow fluctuation frequency could offset the 2°C temperature increase from 28°C to 30°C. So when the air velocity is limited and cannot be elevated, airflow fluctuation frequency can be considered as another control factor to offset increased temperature in warm environment.

Abstract:The impact of fluctuating airflow on human thermal comfort and indoor air quality was investigated using three periodically fluctuating airflows with frequencies of 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3 Hz along with constant velocity airflow in a personalized ventilation system. The test room had an air temperature of 28 ℃ with a personalized air temperature of 25 ℃ during the test period. Subjective evaluations selected the airflow with a frequency of 0.2 Hz as the most preferred out of the three fluctuating airflows. The subjects also had the same level of thermal comfort and perceived air quality when they are separately exposed to the constant airflow and the preferred fluctuating airflow (0.2 Hz). Both subjective results and tracer gas measurements indicate no difference in the perceived air quality, but the lower mean velocity with the fluctuating airflow indicates that the fluctuating airflow has stronger cooling effect than the constant airflow. 

Abstract:Research into thermal adaptation in built environment first began in the mid-70's in response to the oil-shocks and has recently regained attentions due to increasing concerns of human impacts on both energy consumption and global climate change. Thermal adaptive models, climate chamber and field studies for adaptation were reviewed in the present paper and the gaps between theoretical and experimental studies in the field of thermal adaptation in built environment were found through discussions on feedback loop, adaptive factors, climate chamber and field evidences. A new research framework and method were proposed to fill the gaps and validated in a series of studies in naturally ventilated buildings in hot-humid area of China. The adaptive evidences for behavioral adjustments, physiological acclimatization and psychological adaptations were obtained, which indicates that the new research framework and method are effective in the discovery of inner mechanisms of human thermal adaptation in built environment.

Abstract:Research has shown that a stable thermal environment with tight temperature control cannot bring occupants more thermal comfort. Instead, such an environment will incur higher energy costs and produce greater CO2 emissions. Furthermore, this may lead to the degeneration of occupants' inherent ability to combat thermal stress, thereby weakening thermal adaptability. Measured data from many field investigations have shown that the human body has a higher acceptance to the thermal environment in free-running buildings than to that in air-conditioned buildings with similar average parameters. In naturally ventilated environments, occupants have reported superior thermal comfort votes and much greater thermal comfort temperature ranges compared to air-conditioned environments. This phenomenon is an integral part of the adaptive thermal comfort model. In addition, climate chamber experiments have proven that people prefer natural wind to mechanical wind in warm conditions; in other words, dynamic airflow can provide a superior cooling effect. However, these findings also indicate that significant questions related to thermal comfort remain unanswered. For example, what is the cause of these phenomena? How we can build a comfortable and healthy indoor environment for human beings? This article summarizes a series of research achievements in recent decades, tries to address some of these unanswered questions, and attempts to summarize certain problems for future research.

Abstract:Hospital buildings are required to secure a variety of indoor environments according to the diverse requirements of patients and staff. Among these requirements, thermal comfort is an important design criterion for indoor environmental quality that affects patients' healing processes and the wellbeing of medical staff. The patients' thermal comfort is given priority due to their medical conditions and impaired immune systems. Thermal comfort and related contexts have been well-covered in many research articles; however, the number of review articles is limited. This article aims to conduct a holistic and critical review of existing studies offering insights on future research trends (180 articles were analyzed). The key research themes are identified using scientometric analysis. Focus is on influencing factors, field-surveys, improving measures and energy saving related to thermal comfort. The primary outcome concludes that ventilation systems play a key role in maintaining acceptable, thermally-comfortable conditions for patients and medical staff. It is also found that acceptable thermal comfort is highly case-dependent and varies substantially based on the health condition of the patient as well as the type and level of staff activities. The measures currently mentioned to minimize energy consumption are also discussed. Some interesting issues, including the inaccuracy arising from the use of predicted mean vote (PMV) and the impact of gender, age, and related factors on thermal comfort, have been noted. This review provides insights into the design and assessment of hospital thermal environments.

Abstract:In this paper we explore the performance of a newly developed air conditioner which can produce different airflow modes such as dynamically changed simulated natural wind (SNW) and constant mechanical wind (CMW). Climate chamber experiments were conducted to study the demand for air movement and to compare effects of SNW and CMW on human subjects' thermal comfort perception in warm environment. The results indicate that it was possible for subjects to remain comfortable at 28celcius and 30celcius with a suitable air velocity range of 0.4-0.6 and 0.7-0.9 m/s, respectively. Compared with CMW, SNW produced stronger cooling effect and induced better perceived thermal comfort voting from human subjects. Over 60% of these subjects preferred SNW to CMW. These experimental findings would serve as a reference for the design of more energy saving space conditioning systems in warm climates.

Abstract:Dynamic thermal comfort refers to the environmental condition with non-constant parameters, which has attracted more concerns compared with steady-state thermal comfort because of its benefits on human satisfaction, energy efficiency, and body health. This study reviewed over 100 relevant papers in this field to gain a comprehensive understanding of dynamic thermal comfort. Firstly, the dynamics of environmental parameters were analyzed mainly from two aspects, changes in air temperature and variations of airflow. All conditions of air temperature step change were concluded, and the comparison of dynamic airflow was from air velocity, wind volume, air speed, wind direction, pulsation frequency, and turbulence. Then, changes of metabolic rate were discussed as the typical human-related factor which influences the variation of thermal comfort significantly in reality. After that, the thermal history and thermal adaptation involved in dynamic scenarios were further analyzed. A classification method based on different time scales was proposed to illustrate the development of thermal adaptation. Also, the models for dynamic thermal comfort and the concept of thermal alliesthesia were discussed. It proved that the rational dynamic strategy could effectively enhance human thermal perception and be beneficial to energy conservation of air conditioner, and the subjective changes of human activity and behaviors also had great influences which could not be neglected. This paper could provide a reference for systematically understanding dynamic thermal comfort through its theory, models, and application, and also help in understanding the mechanism of thermal adaptation.

Abstract:In most researches on effects of indoor environment to occupants, the effect elements have been focused on thermal sensation, thermal comfort and performance. However, as an important result caused by environment to working people, fatigue should be considered. In this paper, an experiment in a climate chamber is reported, in which the subjects were exposed in four types of environments and engaged in two types of office tasks. Their thermal sensation, work performance and fatigue of were investigated. Differences were observed between fatigue symptoms under different thermal sensation levels. The results show that fatigue is a significant secondary index to evaluating environment.

Abstract:Human individual differences widely and markedly affect thermal comfort and should be carefully considered in the design and operation of the built environment. This paper aims to list and examine the magnitude and significance of individual difference in the preferred/neutral/comfort temperature through reviewing previous climate chamber and field studies. Causal factors for individual differences are investigated, including sex, age and etc. There is no clear and consistent conclusions as to the significance and size of inter-group differences in thermal comfort (between females and males, or the young and the old). To address the issue of individual difference, a paradigm shift from centralized to personalized air condition is on the way with the following three steps: first, collecting individual physiological and psychological response; second, predict individual comfort with machine learning algorithms; and third, accommodating individual difference with Personalized Comfort Systems.

Abstract:People prefer natural wind to mechanical wind, but the reason is still not explained fully. Nowadays, it has been found that some dynamic characteristics of airflow can affect the thermal comfort obviously, so they may be the important reason. In the paper. the dynamic characteristics of both natural wind and mechanical wind were studied through a mass of experiments in different built environments. Hot wire anemometer was used in the experiments to measure the fluctuating velocity of airflow. The dynamic characteristics of airflow were defined and analyzed through turbulence statistical theory, such as spectral analysis. The results show that the dynamic characteristics of mechanical wind around the air supply opening or with the relatively high mean velocity are obviously different from those of natural wind. Only with the full diffusion of mechanical wind in the space, and when the mean velocity decreases to the imperceptible velocity range (less than 0.25 m/s), the dynamic characteristics of mechanical wind will possibly reach to those of natural wind. These findings can explain further why the natural wind is more acceptable than mechanical wind.
