Abstract:Currently there is no generally accepted criterion for a quantitative measure of structural robustness. Taking basis in robust H∞ control theory, a framework for quantitative assessing structural robustness considering uncertainties is proposed. Non-probabilistic uncertainties of external loads and structure itself are expressed by convex model, and structural robustness can be assessed by H∞ norm of the transfer function. Specific formula for elastic-plastic structural robustness is given, using L2 norm as an evaluation of signal. Analysis results of a single degree of freedom parallel system indicate that structural robustness will be overestimated without considering plasticity. Analysis of a truss structure subjected to static and dynamic load indicates that H∞ structural robustness index can effectively and reasonably reflect structural robustness. The results show that increasing redundancy of structures or load-carrying capacity reserves of key components can enhance structural robustness, while fluctuations of external load and properties of structures will reduce structural robustness.

Abstract:In this paper, by using a combination of finite element analysis and a hybrid random convex model, a new numerical algorithm named hybrid perturbation Lagrange method (HPLM) is presented to address an uncertain static response problem of structures with a mixture of random and convex variables. The random variables are used to treat the uncertain parameters with sufficient statistical information, whereas the convex variables are used to describe the uncertain parameters with limited information. The expectation and variance of the random convex responses can be calculated effectively based on the matrix perturbation theory. Then, the interval bounds of these probabilistic characters of the structural responses can be obtained by means of the first-order Taylor series and the Lagrange multiplier method. Numerical results illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method to solve the static response problem of structures with hybrid or pure uncertain parameters.

Abstract:With the increasing complexity of uncertain parameters, the single uncertainty modeling is challenged for structures involving multiple types of uncertainties. However, in the contrast to research on static problems with hybrid uncertainties, dynamic mixed uncertainty problems have not been well addressed. A novel dynamic analysis of structure with hybrid uncertainties is developed for the expressions for the lower and upper bounds of the mean value and standard deviation of the dynamic response. Within this approach, interval variables are adopted to quantify the non-probabilistic uncertainty associated with objective limited information. Some other parameters are considered as random variables. Based on series expansion of random and interval quantities with respect to uncertain parameters, the proposed method evaluates the lower and upper bounds of the first- and second-order moments of the structure response through solving deterministic equations. This method is also capable to solve pure interval problems. Finally, numerical examples are analyzed to illustrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. Abstract:Using the convex model approach, the bounds of uncertain variables are only required rather than the precise probability distributions, based on which it can be made possible to conduct the reliability analysis for many complex engineering problems with limited information. In this paper, three types of convex model including interval, ellipsoid, and multiellipsoid convex uncertainty model are investigated, and a uniform model of nonprobabilistic reliability analysis is built. In the reliability analysis process, an effective space-filling design is introduced to generate representative samples of uncertainty space so as to reduce the computational cost and provide an accurate depiction of possible model outcome. Finally, Spearman's rank correlation coefficient is used to perform parameters global sensitivity analysis. Three numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the feasibility and accuracy of the presented method.

Abstract:AbstractIn this paper, by combining the finite element analysis and non‐probabilistic convex models, we present the numerical algorithm of non‐probabilistic convex models and interval analysis method for the static displacement of structures with uncertain‐but‐bounded parameters. Under the condition of the box or interval vector determined from the ellipsoid of the uncertain‐but‐bounded structural parameter vector, by comparing the numerical algorithm of non‐probabilistic convex models and the interval analysis method in the mathematical proof and the numerical example, we can see that the width of the maximum or upper and minimum or lower bounds on the static displacement yielded by the numerical algorithm of non‐probabilistic convex models is tighter than those produced by the interval analysis method. Abstract:In this study, the methods for computing the exact bounds and the confidence bounds of the dynamic response of structures subjected to uncertain-but-bounded excitations are discussed. Here the Euclidean norm of the nodal displacement is considered as the measurement of the structural response. The problem of calculating the exact lower bound, the confidence (outer) approximation and the inner approximation of the exact upper bound, and the exact upper bound of the dynamic response are modeled as three convex QB (quadratic programming with box constraints) problems and a problem of quadratic programming with bivalent constraints at each time point, respectively. Accordingly, the DCA (difference of convex functions algorithm) and the vertex method are adopted to solve the above convex QB problems and the quadratic programming problem with bivalent constraints, respectively. Based on the inner approximation and the outer approximation of the exact upper bound, the error between the confidence upper bound and the exact upper bound of dynamic response could be yielded. Specially, we also investigate how to obtain the confidence bound of the dynamic response of structures subjected to harmonic excitations with uncertain-but-bounded excitation frequencies. Abstract:An optimal parameter estimation method for uncertain structural systems under unknown random excitations is proposed, which combines the Bayesian inference and stochastic dynamics using geometrically averaged likelihood and optimal response estimation. The general description of optimal parameter estimation problems for uncertain dynamic systems under only stochastic responses measured is presented. The posterior probability density conditional on measured responses is expressed by the likelihood function conditional on system parameters based on Bayes’ theorem. For finite time processes, the parameter estimation problem as the probability integral of conditional means is converted into the optimization problem expressed as maximizing the posterior probability density. A geometrically averaged likelihood function is defined and used for calculating the logarithmic posterior probability density. This estimation can avoid the numerical singularity of the likelihood function and reduce the effects of incomplete posterior probability density and inaccurate prior statistics of unknown random excitations, and then it will be more reasonable and effective. Furthermore, the differential equations for system response means and covariances are derived and solved based on stochastic dynamics theory. The means and covariances conditional on responses at the present instant are expressed by the previous statistics based on optimal response estimation. By combining two results, the analytical expressions of the averaged likelihood function and logarithmic posterior probability density are obtained which will be more reliable and accurate. The proposed optimal estimation method is verified by numerical results for a five-storey frame structure under base random excitation. The estimated results are not affected by the prior statistics errors of random excitation as a factor. For noisy observation, the Kalman filtering is incorporated in the estimation method and hence the estimation is more accurate and robust even for low signal noise ratios. The optimal estimation method has the potential for application to general uncertain systems.

Abstract:This paper presents a new numerical algorithm named hybrid Neumann Lagrange method for static analysis of structural systems with a mixture of random and convex variables. The random variables are used to treat the uncertain parameters with sufficient statistical information, whereas the convex variables are used to describe the uncertain parameters with limited information. The expressions for expectation and variance of random convex structural displacements are developed based on the Neumann series theory. Then the first-order Taylor series and the Lagrange multiplier method are employed to determine the upper and lower bounds of these probabilistic characters of the structural responses. By comparing with the results of Monte Carlo simulation, numerical examples are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In the reliability analysis and design of structures,it is unreasonable to describe all the uncertain parameters as stochastic variables when the probabilistic distribution characteristic for some of them is unavailable and only their variation bounds are known.Based on the probabilistic model description and the multi-ellipsoid model description for different types of uncertainties,a reliability-based optimization model of structures combining stochastic and bounded uncertainties is mathematically formulated with constraints on mixed reliability indices defined in standard U-space.The performance measure approach is employed to transform the original model into its equivalent form for improving the convergence and the stability.Then the reformulated nested optimization problem is simplified into a series of deterministic ones by using the sequential approximate programming approach,which greatly facilitates the efficient solution.Two examples,a mathematic optimization problem and a design of missile wing structure,are given to illustrate the validity of the proposed model as well as the efficiency of the presented numerical techniques.

Abstract:Uncertainty is inherent and unavoidable in almost all engineering systems. Reliability issues stem rightly from the existence of all sorts of uncertainties. In reliability modeling, an appropriate way for dealing with uncertainties and a corresponding reasonable index system for measuring the reliability are essential. The main purpose of this paper is to present a generalized non-probabilistic reliability methodology for analysis and design of structures with bounded uncertainties. The input uncertain parameters are treated as interval variables, and the two representative convex-set models, hyper-rectangle model and hyper-ellipsoid model, are adopted to describe bounded uncertainties. A non-probabilistic reliability measuring system is developed, in which dimensionless non-probabilistic reliability indices are defined in different situations by adopting a similar way as the traditional probabilistic reliability method for structures. The measuring system of reliability is explained in detail and is illustrated schematically. Based on these, a non-probabilistic reliability methodology for structures with uncertain-but-bounded parameters is presented systematically. The fundamental problem of how to construct a convex-set model is briefly discussed by examples and numerical experiments. Four other numerical examples are provided to illustrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the presented method.

Abstract:A new, non-probabilistic, set-theoretical models, that is interval analysis method is developed in this study to predict the variability or uncertainty in buckling loads of composite structures resulting from the unavoidable scatter in structural parameters. By mathematically analyzing and proving, the width of the upper and lower bounds on the critical buckling loads calculated by the interval analysis method is sharper than those that are obtained by convex models method, moreover, the interval analysis method has less computational cost than convex models method. Comparison between convex models and interval analysis method is performanced through numerical examples. For the specific cases considered, the results of numerical examples indicate that uncertainties in structural parameters have significant effect on the critical buckling loads of composite structures.

Abstract:Two non-probabilistic, set-theoretical methods for determining the maximum and minimum impulsive responses of structures to uncertain-but-bounded impulses are presented. They are, respectively, based on the theories of interval mathematics and convex models. The uncertain-but-bounded impulses are assumed to be a convex set, hyper-rectangle or ellipsoid. For the two non-probabilistic methods, less prior information is required about the uncertain nature of impulses than the probabilistic model. Comparisons between the interval analysis method and the convex model, which are developed as an anti-optimization problem of finding the least favorable impulsive response and the most favorable impulsive response, are made through mathematical analyses and numerical calculations. The results of this study indicate that under the condition of the interval vector being determined from an ellipsoid containing the uncertain impulses, the width of the impulsive responses predicted by the interval analysis method is larger than that by the convex model; under the condition of the ellipsoid being determined from an interval vector containing the uncertain impulses, the width of the interval impulsive responses obtained by the interval analysis method is smaller than that by the convex model.

Abstract:The dynamic characteristics of a structure serve as a crucial foundation for structural assessment, fault diagnosis, and ensuring structural safety. Therefore, it is imperative to investigate the impacts of uncertain parameters on the dynamic performance of structures. The dynamic characteristics of arches with uncertain parameters are analyzed in this paper. The uncertain parameters are regarded as non-probabilistic uncertainties and represented as interval variables. A model of an arch considering interval-uncertain parameters is built, and kinematic equations are established. The natural frequencies are obtained using the differential quadrature (DQ) method, and the relationships between natural frequency, radius, and central angle are also analyzed. On this basis, the Chebyshev polynomial surrogate (CPS) model is employed to solve the uncertain dynamic problem, and the natural frequencies are seen to be the objective functions of the CPS model. The accuracy verification of the model is achieved by comparison with the Monte Carlo simulation (MCS). Simulations are carried out considering different uncertainties, and the results show that the bounds of natural frequencies are influenced not only by the types of uncertain parameters, but also by their combinations.
A reliable approach to compute the static response of uncertain structural system

Abstract:Uncertainties widely exist in engineering structural analysis and design problems and cannot be neglected. The probabilistic method, the fuzzy method and the interval method are the three major approaches to simulate uncertainties at present. Representing the uncertain structural material parameters, uncertain structural geometric parameters and the uncertain loading conditions as the interval numbers, the structural static response accurately by solving linear interval equations. Overestimation is a major drawback in interval computation. Thus, a reliable computation approach was proposed to overcome it in the paper. The presented approach is based on the inclusion monotone property of interval mathematics and the physical/real meaning expressed by the interval function. The interval function and the linear interval equations were solved by solving the corresponding optimization problems to determine the endpoints/bounds of every interval element of the solutions of the problem. Moreover, an intelligent algorithm named as real-code genetic algorithm was used to locate the global optima of these optimization problems. Some mathematical and structural examples were used to examine the efficiency of the approach first. Then, this approach was combined with finite element method to determine the response interval of uncertain structural system. A very sharp enclosure for the solution set, due to material, geometric and loading uncertainty in structural analysis problems, was obtained.

Abstract:Unified form of analysis for the static displacement, the dynamic response and the natural frequency of structures with uncertain-but-bounded parameters based on convex models is presented. The probabilistic model for them is also given, where the uniform distribution is adopted for the uncertain parameters. The mean values and the standard deviations of the uncertain parameters are derived from the ellipsoid so that the relationship between convex models and probabilistic model is established. Numerical examples are used to illustrate the validity of the presented methods.

Abstract:Using the convex model approach, the bounds of uncertain variables are only required rather than the precise probability distributions, based on which it can be made possible to conduct the reliability analysis for many complex engineering problems with limited information. This paper aims to develop a novel nonprobabilistic reliability solution method for structures with interval uncertainty variables. In order to explore the entire domain represented by interval variables, an enhanced optimal Latin hypercube sampling (EOLHS) is used to reduce the computational effort considerably. Through the proposed method, the safety degree of a structure with convex modal uncertainty can be quantitatively evaluated. More importantly, this method can be used to deal with any general problems with nonlinear and black-box performance functions. By introducing the suggested reliability method, a convex-model-based system reliability method is also formulated. Three numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the effciency and accuracy of the method.

Abstract:The numerical estimation of the static displacement bounds of structures with uncertain-but-bounded parameters is considered in this paper. By representing each uncertain-but-bounded parameter as an interval number or vector, a static response analysis problem for the structure can be expressed in the form of a system of linear interval equations, in which the coefficient matrix and the right-hand side term are, respectively, the interval matrix and the interval vector. In this study, we present two new simple mathematical proofs of the vertex solution theorem using Cramer’s rule for solving linear interval equations, different from the other proof methods, to find the upper and lower bounds on the set of solutions. The first takes advantage of optimization theory, while the second is based on interval extension. By means of a typical example considered first by Hansen, it can be seen that the result calculated by the vertex solution theorem is the same as one predicted by the Oettli–Prager criterion. Examples of a three-stepped beam and a 10-bar truss are presented to illustrate the computational aspects of the vertex solution theorem in comparison with the interval perturbation method.

Abstract:By using the convex model approach, the bounds of the uncertain parameters are only required rather than their precise probability distributions, based on which it can be made possible to conduct the reliability analysis for many complex engineering problems with limited information. In this paper, a non-probabilistic reliability model is given for structures with convex model uncertainty, which is defined as a ratio of the multidimensional volume falling into the reliability domain to the one of the whole convex model. A Monte Carlo simulation is then formulated for the reliability model to obtain a reference solution. A first order approximation method (FOAM) is proposed to solve the reliability model based on a linear approximation of the failure surface. A second order approximation method (SOAM) is further formulated to improve the reliability analysis precision for limit-state functions with relatively strong nonlinearity. By introducing the suggested reliability model, a convex-model-based system reliability method is also formulated. Eight numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present methods.

Abstract:Due to its weak dependence on the amount of the uncertainty information, the non-probability convex model approach can be used to deal with the problems without sufficient information. In this paper, by integrating the response surface (RS) technique with the convex model approach, a new structural reliability analysis method is developed for many complex engineering problems with black-box limit-state functions. Using the newly developed correlation analysis technique for non-probability convex model, the multi-dimensional ellipsoid is efficiently constructed to characterize the uncertain parameters. A quadratic polynomial without cross terms is adopted to parameterize the black-box limit-state function, based on which the functional values as well as the first-order gradients can be explicitly calculated. At each iteration, the created RS is combined with the iHL-RF algorithm to obtain an approximate reliability index. A sequential procedure is subsequently formulated to update the RS and hence improve the precision of the reliability analysis. Four numerical examples and one engineering application are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness of the presented method.
