Abstract:Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) propagation, which widely exists in wireless systems, will degrade the performance of wireless positioning system if it is not taken into consideration in the localization algorithm design. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) suggests that the probabilities of line-of-sight (LOS) and NLOS are related to the distance between the receiver and the transmitter. In this paper, we propose a Maximum Likelihood Estimator (MLE) for localization, which incorporates the distance dependent LOS/NLOS probabilities. Then, the position error bound is derived using Cramer-Rao Lower Bound (CRLB). Through numerical analysis, the impact of NLOS propagation on the position error bound is evaluated. The performance of our proposed algorithm is verified by real world experimental data.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze a new GPS positioning algorithm. Our algorithm uses the direct linearization technique to reduce the computation time overhead. We invoke the general least squares method in order to achieve optimality in the situation when the trilateration system of equations becomes over-determined. We systematically evaluate our new algorithms and show that they indeed take much less computation time than the traditional GPS method while maintaining reasonable accuracy.

Abstract:3 Abstract: An extensive research has been carried out to evaluate method for the tracking of mobile equipment using it's base stations in a GSM network. Enhanced Observed Time Difference (E-OTD) method is one of the promising and fairly developed positioning technologies that has been standardized for GSM systems. This Method has been utilized in this research work to locate the mobile equipment's position. Urban-area measurements were performed in an area consisting of both micro GSM900 and GSM1800 cells. Measurements were carried out in a rural area with macro-cell structure having diameters of 20 to 30 kilometers. Simulation runs were performed with only two neighbouring BTSs, to show the difference when three or four BTSs are used in the E-OTD location estimate calculation. The location accuracy increases when E-OTD is performed with four or more BTSs. The difference in the location estimate when more than four or just four BTSs are involved, is found to be minimum.

Abstract:This paper illustrates the performance of a mobile positioning technique applicable to a GSM network.An experimental system of a network-based GSM positioning for ITS has been proposed, and the hybrid TOA-TDOA method based on GSM signaling has been analyzed and used. The performance of the proposed system is showed through simulations in urban and suburban environments. The accuracy for 67% mobile stations is 70 m in urban and 120 m in suburban. The accuracy, coverage and network load of positioning system are also analyzed.

Abstract:Despite the wide use of the global navigation satellite system (GNSS), its performance can be severely degraded due to blockage and vulnerability to interference. Stand-alone ground-based positioning systems can provide positioning services in the absence of GNSS signals and have tremendous application potential. For precise point positioning in ground-based systems, ambiguity resolution (AR) is a key issue. On-the-fly (OTF) AR methods are desirable for reasons of convenience. The existing methods usually linearize a nonlinear problem approximately by a series expansion that is based on an initial position estimation obtained by code measurements or measuring instruments. However, if the initial position estimation contains relatively large errors, the convergence of existing methods cannot be ensured. We present a new OTF-AR method based on the double difference square (DDS) observation model for ground-based precise point positioning, which involves only carrier phase measurements. The initial solution obtained from the DDS model is sufficiently accurate to obtain a float solution by linearization, and this step only requires the frequency synchronization of base stations. Further, if the clock differences of the base stations are accurately calibrated, a fixed solution can be obtained by employing the LAMBDA algorithm. Numerical simulations and a real-world experiment are conducted to validate the proposed method. Both the simulations and the experimental results show that the proposed method can achieve high-accuracy positioning. These results enable precise point positioning to be applied in situations where no reliable code measurements or other measuring instruments are available for stand-alone ground-based positioning systems.

Abstract:Booming wireless connectivity has boosted the interest of source-location in various types of network. The existing performance evaluations of source-location algorithms infrequently focus on the geometry issue, which also has considerable impact on the accuracy of source-location. This paper presents analysis and illustrations of the geometry issue for the time-difference-of-arrival (TDOA) method. Several common source-location algorithms are reviewed, followed by the simulation tests of positioning performance under variants of geometry and different measurement errors. Results indicate that positioning algorithms also work under the examined cases of poor geometry, and an RMSE of below 0.3m can be achieved, which implies that the deviation of time-difference measurement error should be no greater than 33 ps.

Abstract:A hybrid SADOA/AOA location method for wireless communication system is proposed in this paper. The signal attenuation difference of arrival and the angle of arrival derived from the smart antenna array of the service base station are combined first,and then the real position of the mobile station is estimated by using the WLS method. This algorithm is simple and can save the compu-tation cost,which does not need full network synchronization. Simulation shows that the proposed method has better accuracy and can reduce shadowing impact on location effectively.
Enhancing smartphone precise point positioning to sub-meter accuracy in suburban environments: a new stochastic model and outlier diagnosis

Abstract:Smartphone global navigation satellite system measurements in suburban environments suffer from severe multipath and noise, posing a challenge in dealing with the potential outliers. Using the range errors derived from smartphones, the characteristics of range errors can be further utilized to optimize the stochastic model and improve outlier diagnosis in user environments. Compared to existing algorithms, a new adaptive phase/code precision ratio scheme is proposed. Furthermore, a scale factor is utilized to deal with the over-optimization issue in the fitted weighting scheme functions, and adaptive a posteriori residual rejection method which considers the number of rejected measurements is introduced. The positioning improvements brought by the proposed algorithm are validated step by step. The proposed adaptive phase/code precision ratio can reduce the 68th and 95th horizontal positioning errors by 4 cm and 3 cm, respectively, compared to a ratio of 100. The percentage of horizontal positioning errors within 1 m can be improved by 7% (from 50 to 58%). Compared to the conventional carrier-to-noise ( C / N 0 )-based weighting scheme, the proposed weighting scheme can reduce the 68th and 95th percentile horizontal positioning errors by 14 cm and 15 cm, representing improvements of 11% and 8%, respectively. Applying the new residual rejection method, the percentage of positioning errors within 1 m improves from 42 to 54% compared to C / N 0 -based weighting scheme. The results demonstrate great potential for achieving overall sub-meter level horizontal positioning performance with smartphones in suburban environments.

Abstract:The availability of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) raw observations in smartphones has driven research into low-cost GNSS solutions, especially in challenging urban environments, which have garnered significant attention from scholars in recent years. This study proposes an improved smartphone-based velocity-aided positioning method and conducts vehicle-mounted experiments in urban roads representing typical scenarios. The results show that when transitioning from low- to high-multipath environments, the number of visible satellites and carrier phase observations are highly sensitive to environmental factors, with frequent multipath effects. The introduction of robust pre-fit and post-fit residual algorithms has proven to be an effective quality control method. Additionally, using more refined observation models and appropriate parameter estimation algorithms led to a slight 6% improvement in velocity performance. The improved Kalman filter position estimation model (KFSPP-P) strategy, by incorporating velocity uncertainty into the state estimation process, overcomes the limitations of conventional velocity-aided smartphone positioning methods (KFSPP-V) in complex urban environments. In low-multipath environments, the accuracy of the KFSPP-P strategy is comparable to that of KFSPP-V, with an approximate 8% improvement in horizontal accuracy. However, in more challenging environments, such as tree-lined roads and urban environments, the KFSPP-P strategy shows significant improvements, particularly enhancing horizontal positioning accuracy by approximately 50%. These advancements demonstrate the potential of using smartphones to provide reliable positioning services in complex urban environments.

Abstract:Positioning of base station is the key element in the initialization of WCDMA network planning. Base station positioning is an optimization problem, whose object value is derived from power assignment based on mobile assignment strategy and solving linear equation system usually. A load-balancing mobile assignment strategy was proposed. The theoretical analysis and simulation experiment show that it well considers the cell breathing effect. The linkages between mobiles and base stations are optimized during the mobile assignment, so that the load of each base station is comparatively balanced. By using this strategy, it obviously decrease the total transmitting power of all the base stations when achieving the same coverage as usual mobile assignment strategy.

Abstract:Excessive user location updates are generated due to users local movement in traditional location update algorithms.This paper analyzed the drawback of traditional movement-based location update algorithm,and proposed a new method to solve this problem.The new method improved the performance of location update algorithms through introducing two new threshold parameters.Extensive simulations based on a three-tier hierarchical mobility database structure were performed and the performance of proposed algorithm was compared with the traditional movement-based algorithm.The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm decreases the number of local update messages significantly and reduces Ping-Pong effect efficiently.

Abstract:A Location method which is combined with the Existing Reinforcing mechanisms using ray tracing,is proposed,when the TDOA technology couldn't access location in less base station.This method sets the switch program and builds the fingerprint database with ray tracing,then by using the weight matching algorithm and regional areas give the location services to the user.The simulation results shows that the method is feasible and the accurate radio location data is obtained higher by ray tracing;the rational planning of regional size can reduce the end-run time and improve location service quality.

Abstract:This paper presents a mobile location algorithm based on signal attenuation and outliers detection. It takes advantages of original parameter of signal attenuation from mobile station’s uplink channel. It can translate the distance information from mobile station to base station through the improved wireless channel mathematics model, and can decrease occasional error through the new outliers’ detection algorithms. Experiment result indicates that the algorithm is efficient. The position accuracy is improved without modification on both network and mobile stations.
Improving the Performance of Time-Relative GNSS Precise Positioning in Remote Areas

Abstract:Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) can attain centimeter level positioning accuracy, which is conventionally provided by real-time precise point positioning (PPP) and real-time kinematic (RTK) techniques. Corrections from the data center or the reference stations are required in these techniques to reduce various GNSS errors. The time-relative positioning approach differs from the traditional PPP and RTK in the sense that it does not require external real-time corrections. It computes the differences in positions of a single receiver at different epochs using phase observations. As the code observations are not used in this approach, its performance is not affected by the noise and multipath of code observations. High reliability is another advantage of time-relative precise positioning because the ambiguity resolution is not needed in this approach. Since the data link is not required in the method, this approach has been widely used in remote areas where wireless data link is not available. The main limitation of time-relative positioning is that its accuracy degrades over time between epochs because of the temporal variation of various errors. The application of the approach is usually limited to be within a time interval of less than 20 min. The purpose of this study was to increase the time interval of time-relative positioning and to extend the use of this method to applications with a longer time requirement, especially in remote areas without wireless communication. In this paper, the main error sources of the time-relative method are first analyzed in detail, and then the approach to improve the accumulated time relative positioning method is proposed. The performance of the proposed method is assessed using both static and dynamic observations with a duration as long as several hours. The experiments presented in this paper show that, among the four scenarios tested (i.e., GPS, GPS/Galileo, GPS/Galileo/BeiDou, and GPS/Galileo/BeiDou/GLONASS), GPS/Galileo/BeiDou performed best and GPS/Galileo/BeiDou/GLONASS performed worst. The maximum positioning errors were mostly within 0.5 m in the horizontal direction, even after three hours with GPS/Galileo/BeiDou. It is expected that the method could be used for positioning and navigation for as long as several hours with decimeter level horizontal accuracy in remote areas without wireless communication.

Abstract:The positioning system based on the signals of opportunity (SOPs) of low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites can meet the positioning requirements of the receiver in the global navigation satellite system (GNSS) denial environment. However, the received signal does not contain or cannot extract the orbit information and signal emission time of the radiation source, which has become the main error source in this positioning system. Taking the Iridium satellites as an example, a Doppler differential (DD)-LEO (DD-LEO) positioning framework is proposed in this article, and the baseline impact analysis of the differential Doppler positioning system (DDPS) and a performance improvement method are carried out. First, the workflow between a base and a rover is introduced, and the error elimination of the DDPS is analyzed. Second, the equivalent Doppler error models formed by the orbit error at the base and the rover are established, respectively, and the relationship between the baseline and the mean or variance of equivalent Doppler residual in the DDPS is derived. Then, aiming at the problem of poor positioning accuracy due to the inconsistency of space–time reference in the long-baseline DDPS, a signal emission time estimation (SETE) algorithm based on maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) is proposed to further improve the positioning accuracy. Finally, a simulation experiment of the influence of baseline length and direction on the DDPS is implemented, and several groups of field differential experiments with different baseline lengths are completed. The experimental results of long-baseline positioning show that the DDPS can reduce the 3-D positioning error by 48.0% compared with the single station without differential positioning. At the same time, the positioning accuracy of the rover station is further enhanced by 86.3% when the base station adopts the SETE algorithm, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed - lgorithm.

Abstract:Multipath (MP) reception has been among the main issues for accurate and reliable positioning in urban environments. It has been shown to introduce positioning errors of up to tens of meters for conventional two-step (2SP) receivers. The direct position estimation (DPE) has been introduced as a more robust positioning algorithm compared to the conventional two-step (2SP) receivers in terms of MP mitigation. However, its high computational load prevents DPE from real-time positioning for commercial receivers. Thus, we present a novel grid-based maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) algorithm based on DPE by making use of pseudorange measurements to obtain the correlogram on a predefined searching space. Unlike DPE, which performs correlations at the intermediate frequency (IF) level, correlations are done by directly comparing the code phase of each candidate position, velocity, and timing with the incoming pseudorange. This way, the proposed method retains MP mitigation properties from DPE through the use of MLE from DPE and allows for a significantly reduced computational load compared to DPE. The proposed method was tested with both open-sourced datasets collected in urban environments as well as IF simulation data, and its performance is evaluated against a 2SP receiver. Results show that the proposed method manages to acquire the MP mitigation capability of DPE and outperforms 2SP by up to around 23% in the tested urban datasets and 91% in the simulation data, at a much-reduced computational time. The resilience of our proposed method against MP and NLOS could even potentially offer applications in geodetic networks, where robust estimators are traditionally employed to counteract outliers.

Abstract:Instead of spread spectrum signals used for positioning in current global navigation satellite systems (GNSS), this paper presents a novel positioning method using OFDM signals for the next-generation GNSS. In contrast to the existing positioning methods with OFDM signals based on timing synchronization or super resolution algorithms, the proposed scheme uses the property of the OFDM signal itself in the frequency domain with respect to transmission delay, resulting in the accurate time of arrival (TOA) estimation. Computer simulations verify that the positioning accuracy of the proposed algorithm with bearable complexity can reach the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) in the range of medium to high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The accuracy achievable is in the order of centimeters, higher than that of the state-ofthe- art positioning methods using OFDM signals in the literature.

Abstract:With the development of the Ground Positioning System (GPS) modernization and the expectable implementation of Galileo, people pay more and more attention to civil applications on multi-frequency signals. This paper proposes a new and advanced positioning algorithm for the dual-frequency satellite navigation receivers, concerning the various influences of all the ranging error sources and taking advantage of the Klobuchar single-frequency ionospheric model. The paper also presents positioning precision provided by the new algorithm. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that, the new dual-frequency positioning algorithm can achieve higher positioning accuracy than the single-frequency positioning algorithm and the traditional dual-frequency positioning algorithm.
