Abstract:Detailed theoretical studies of azide/thioacid amidation are performed using density functional theory. The calculated results indicate that electronic properties of azide have significant effects on reaction pathways, which result in two distinct mechanisms for electron-rich and electron-poor azide coupling in the base-promoted amidation. For electron-rich azide amidation, after the concerted [3+2] cycloaddition of azide/thiocarboxylate, a new reaction channel is found challenging that recently mentioned, which follows two consecutive, unimolecular reactions with very low activation barriers (< 1.6 kcal mol −1 ) to give an anionic amide and a nitrous sulfide (N 2 S). Distinct from electron-rich azide amidation, electron-poor azide first couples with thiocarboxylate to form a linear stable adduct, and then passes through the transition state of the rate-controlling step to afford the anionic amide, rather than the thiatrazoline. The free energy barrier of this step is 4.2 kcal mol −1 lower than that previously proposed. Comparatively, the azide/thioacid amidations undergo the concerted [3+2] cycloaddition and the subsequent retro-[3+2] cycloaddition process to give cis-enol form of the amide, which have higher activation barriers than those in the based-promoted amidation. Solvent effects investigated indicate that non-polar solvents, such as chloroform, are more preferable for the base-promoted thioacid/azide amidation.

Abstract:Ionic liquids, with their unique properties, including low volatility, high polarity, good thermal stability over a wide temperature range and selective dissolving capacity by a proper choice of cations or anions, have attracted increasing interest in the organic transformations as reactioin medium as well as catalyst (ligand). Compared with traditional organic solvents, ionic liquids have great advantages in obtaining products with high isolated yields and good to excellent selectivities, accelerationg reaction rate in some cases, ease of work-up, as well as recycling use with or without catalysts after simply recoveration. The paper reviews the advanced progress in the application of ionic liquids as reaction medium as well as catalysts to organic synthesis, mainly including coupling reaction, Michael addition, Baylis-Hillman reaction, Diels-Alder reaction, Aldol reaction, Knoevenagel condensation, cyclorization reaction, alkylation and acylation, oxidation and reduction etc.

Abstract:A convenient and facile method for Michael addition of methylene active compounds to chalcones has been developed by using 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene-derived task-specific ionic liquids as reaction medium in the absence of any catalyst. This protocol could afford the Michael adducts in good to excellent yields in a short time, the workup is very simple, and the ionic liquid could be reused six times without significant loss of activity.

Abstract:A real continuous-flow process for synthesis of alkyl bromides or cyanides was demonstrated by nucleophilic substitution reactions of tosylates with bromide and/or cyanide conducted in ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tosylate. The process provides higher yields and shorter reaction time and is easily upgraded to large scale.

Abstract:Aromatic nucleophilic substitution of activated aromatic halides with thiophenol was conducted in NaOH/ionic liquid (++BF -_4) system and unsymmetrical biaromatic sulfides were synthesized. The results indicated that the reaction is accelerated by ionic liquid. It takes the advantage of mild reaction conditions (room temperature and short reaction times) and good yields (80%-95%). But the presence of electron-withdrawing group (NO_2) is necessary to enhance the reaction activity of the substrate and when chlorobenzene was used as substrate the result was not ideal (100 ℃, 24 h, 20% yield). The separation of product from ionic liquid is easy and the ionic liquid can be recovered and re-used easily.

Abstract:Redox-active benzimidazolium sulfonamides as thiolating reagents have been developed for reductive C-S bond coupling. The IMDN-SO2R reagent provides a bench-stable cationic precursor to generate a portfolio of highly active N-S intermediates, which can be successfully applied in cross-electrophilic coupling with various organic halides. The employment of an electrophilic sulfur source solved the problem of catalyst deactivation and avoided odorous thiols, featuring practical conditions, broad substrate scope, and excellent tolerance.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) have been widely applied as catalysts, promoters and/or reaction medium in organic synthesis due to their non-flammability, low volatility, good solubility, readily tunable catalytic activities and good recyclability. Herein, the recent advances on the applications of acidic task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs), basic TSILs and chiral TSILs in Michael addition have been reviewed. Moreover, the structure, catalytic activity and probable reaction mechanism of ILs are also fully discussed.

Abstract:Imidazolium cations are promising for anion exchange membranes, and electrochemical applications and gas capture. They can be chemically modified in many ways including halogenation. Halogenation possibilities of the imidazole ring constitute a particular interest. This work investigates fluorination and chlorination reactions of all symmetrically non-equivalent sites of the imidazolium cation. Halogenation of all carbon atoms is thermodynamically permitted. Out of these, the most favorable site is the first methylene group of the alkyl chain. In turn, the least favorable site is carbon of the imidazole ring. Temperature dependence of enthalpy, entropy, and Gibbs free energy at 1 bar is discussed. The reported results provide an important guidance in functionalization of ionic liquids in search of task-specific compounds.

Abstract:The novel ionic liquid with multi-SO3H groups has been synthesized through the simple procedure and its catalytic activity for the oxathioacetalization was investigated carefully at room temperature under solvent-free condition. The results showed that the novel ionic liquid was very efficient for the reactions with the average yields over 90%. Mild reaction conditions, high yields, small amount of usage, operational simplicity, needless of any solvent, wide applicability, reusability and chemoselectivity are the key features of this methodology.

Study on the Selective Reductive Amination of Aromatic Aldehydes in Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The reductive amination in ionic liquids was researched. The results show that the aromatic aldehydes and amines continuously process the condensation reaction and the reduction reaction to afford the corresponding secondary amines with high yield (70%~98%). NaBH4 in BMImBF4 is found to be an efficient system for the reductive amination with good reductive ability and excellent selectivity. The advantages of the reaction in above system are its mild and neutral reactive conditions. Furthermore BMImBF4 could be reused for at least 12 times.

Abstract:N-Substituted thioureas were synthesized efficiently by two-step reaction: (1) acyl chlorides and primary amides reacted together in functional [emim]SCN rapidly at room temperature to form N-benzoyl-N'-alkylthioureas in high yields. [emim]SCN acted both as an initial material and reaction solvent. (2) N-benzoyl-N'-alkylthioureas were hydrolyzed in NaOH/H2O/EtOH to yield N-substituted thioureas with almost 100% yield. A new efficient and green synthesis of N-substituted thioureas showing good practicality was provided.

Abstract:Ionic Plastic Crystals (IPCs) and Ionic Liquids (ILs) exhibit intriguing physical properties, but methods to chemically control their properties remain largely unexplored. To achieve control over their thermal properties and phase behaviors through chemical reactions, in this study, we synthesized quaternary salts comprising ammonium cations with vinyl or allyl substituents and fluorinated anions. Most of them were IPCs or ILs, which readily underwent quantitative bromine addition reactions upon exposure to bromine vapor. The reactions facilitated simple, efficient chemical phase transformations between ionic plastic crystals, ionic liquids, and ordinary ionic crystals.

Reaction Mechanism Study for the Synthesis of Alkylimidazolium-based Halide Ionic Liquids

Abstract:The reaction mechanisms of 1-methylimidazole with a number of alkyl halides including ethyl chloride, butyl chloride, ethyl bromide and butyl bromide were determined using density-functional theory(DFT). At the B3LYP/ 6-31++G**//B3LYP/6-31G* basis sets, two mechanisms were found: path A (reactants -> TS1 -> P1) and path B (reactants -> TS2 -> P2). For path A, the halide ions form hydrogen bonds with the C2-H; for path B, the halide ions form hydrogen bonds with the C5-H. Hydrogen bonds play a fundamental role in the synthesis of the alkylimidazolium-based ionic liquids, especially the hydrogen on the C2 affects the reaction significantly. The activation energies of reactions passing through TS1 are lower than that passing through TS2, which indicate that reactions passing through TS1 are favored by reaction dynamics. In agreement with experimental findings, the calculations showed that the reactions through TS1 are exothermic processes.
