Abstract:One new flavonostilbene glycoside, polygonflavanol C ( 1 ), two new dimeric stilbene glycosides, multiflorumiside M and multiflorumiside N ( 2 − 3 ), one new diphenyl ethanol glycoside, ( R )-2,3,5,4′-tetrahydroxy-diphenylethanol 2- O - β -D-glucopyranoside ( 4 ), and one new deoxybenzoin glycoside, 2,4,3′,5′-tetrahydroxy-6-methyl-deoxybenzoin 2- O - β -D-glucopyranoside ( 5 ), together with six known ones ( 6 − 11 ), were isolated from the roots of Polygonum multiflorum . Their structures were elucidated by the comprehensive spectroscopic analyses. In addition, compounds 1 and 7 showed significantly in vitro anti-inflammatory activity.

Abstract:Twenty-two compounds, including five homoisoflavanones (1–3, 7 and 8), three isoflavones (9–11), flavone glycoside (19), one triterpenoid aglycon (5), two steroidal sapogenins (4, 6), five steroidal saponins (12, 13, 20–22), three lignanoids (14, 17 and 18) and two fatty acids (15 and 16) were isolated from the rhizomes of Polygonatum odoratum. The structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods and by comparison of the reported spectral data. Additionally, the relationships between this plant and other species from Liliaceae family have also been discussed on the basis of the given compounds.

Abstract:Much attention has been paid to cholestane-type steroidal glycosides because of their importance from the perspectives of both chemical diversity and significant biological activities. A phytochemical investigation of the rhizomes of Polygonatum odoratum (Liliaceae) resulted in the isolation of three novel cholestane-type steroidal glycosides (1-3) with unique Δ(14,16)-unsaturated D-ring structures as well as two novel spirostane-type steroidal saponins (4 and 5) and three known steroidal glycosides (6-8). Their structures were determined by various spectroscopic methods and chemical reactions. Steroidal saponin 7 showed significant antifungal activity against Candida albicans JCM1542 (MIC 3.1 μg/mL) and Aspergillus fumigatus JCM1738 (MIC 6.3 μg/mL).

Abstract:A new C-methylated homoisoflavanone together with four known rare methyl-homoisoflavanones and one known 9,19-cyclolart triterpenoid were isolated and characterised from the rhizomes of Polygonatum odoratum. The structure of the new compound was determined as 3-(4'-methoxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxy-chroman-4-one (1). The four known methyl-homoisoflavanones were determined as 3-(4'-methoxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethyl-chroman-4-one (2), 3-(4'-hydroxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethyl-chroman-4-one (3), 3-(4'-hydroxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxy-chroman-4-one (4) and 3-(4'-hydroxy-benzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-6-methyl-chroman-4-one (5). The one 9,19-cyclolart triterpenoid was determined as 9,19-cyclolart-25-en-3,24 (R)-diol (6). Compound 2, 5, 6 were isolated for the first time from the Polygonatum genus. The compounds (1,3-6) were found to be strong against the growth of bacteria and plant pathogenic fungi.

Abstract:Two new diastereoisomeric phenolic compounds ( 1 , 2 ) have been isolated from the methanol extract of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua leaves. Their structures were elucidated as (1S,2R) and (1S,2S)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-ethoxypropan-2-ols by spectroscopic data ( 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, HR-ESI-MS, and ORD). In addition, compounds 1 and 2 displayed potential aldose reductase inhibitory activities with IC 50 values of 29.05 and 22.38 μM, respectively.

Abstract:A phytochemical investigation of the rhizomes of Polygonatum cyrtonema, a traditional Chinese medicine and healthy food named "Huang-jing" (Polygonati Rhizoma), led to the isolation of 22 phenolic derivatives including an undescribed (1) and nine (2-10) known C-methylated homoisoflavanones, two common homoisoflavanones (11, 12), four flavanones (13-16), one chalcone (17), and five octopamine derivatives (18-22). The structure of compound 1 was established mainly by spectroscopic methods, including 1D-/2D-NMR and electronic circular dichroism (ECD). The known compounds were identified by comparing the observed and reported physicochemical properties and spectroscopic data published in the literature. Polygonatone H (8) and 5,7,2 '-trihydroxy4 '-methoxy-6,8-dimethyl-homoisoflavanone (9) exhibited significant cytotoxic effects against four human cancer cell lines (HCT-116, AGS, U-87 MG, and PC-12) with IC50 values ranging from 2.2 to 9.8 mu M. Furthermore, the chemotaxonomic significance of the isolated C-methylated homoisoflavanones was briefly discussed.

Abstract:A new furostan type steroidal saponin, kingianoside Z (1), along with four known compounds (2-5), was isolated from the ethanolic extract of Polygonatum sibiricum Delar. ex Redoute. Their structures were determined by spectroscopical method and by comparison with previously reported spectroscopic data. Compounds 3-5 showed significant cytotoxicity against HepG2 cell lines with IC50 values of 14.2, 12.1 and 8.5 μM, respectively.

Abstract:A new homoisoflavonoid, (R)-3-(2,4-dihydroxybenzyl)-5,7-dihydroxy-8-methoxychroman-4-one ( 1 ), has been isolated from the rhizomes of Polygonatum alte-lobatum , together with seven known compounds ( 2–8 ). The structure of the new compound 1 was determined through spectroscopic and MS analyses. Among the isolated compounds, compounds 1 , 3 , 5 , and 6 showed potent inhibition with IC 50 values of 18.04 ± 2.14, 19.87 ± 2.70, 16.88 ± 1.35, and 18.50 ± 1.52 μM, respectively, against LPS-induced NO generation.

Abstract:Column chromatography of silical gel and Sephadex LH-20 methods were used to isolate and purify the chemical constituents from the rhizome of Polygonatum odoratum.The four known rare C-methylated and O-methylated homoisoflavanones were isolated and characterized.The structure of the compound were elucidated by spectroscopic and the data reported in literature.The four methyl-homoisoflavanones were determined as 4'-methoxy-5,7-dihydroxy-6,8-dimethyl-homoisflavanone(Ⅰ),4',5,7-trihydroxy-6,8-dimethyl-homoisflavanone(Ⅱ),4',5,7-trihydroxy-6-methyl-8-methoxy-homoisflavanone(Ⅲ) and 4',5,7-trihydroxy-6-methyl-homoisflavanone(Ⅳ).Compound Ⅰand Ⅳ were isolated from the Polygonatum genus for the first time.

Abstract:Sixteen alkaloid compounds were isolated from the dried rhizomes of P. zanlanscianense, including a pair of new enantiomers (R/S)-7'-ethoxy-trans-p-couma-royltyramine (1a/1b) and 14 known compounds (2-14) isolated from this plant for the first time. The structures of new compounds were identified by IR, NMR and MS spectroscopic analysis, and their absolute configurations were determined by comparison of the experimental and calculated ECD data.

Abstract:Two new phenolic compounds, (1R,2R)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1-methoxypropan-2-ol ( 1 ) and (1S,2S)-1-(4-hydroxy-3,5-dimethoxyphenyl)-1-ethoxypropan-2-ol ( 2 ), and one known analog ( 3 ) have been isolated from the methanol extract of Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua flowers and identified by 1 H NMR, 13 C NMR, HSQC, HMBC, HR-ESI-MS, and optical rotations. In addition, compounds 1–3 displayed potential aldose reductase inhibitory activity with IC 50 values of 22.16, 17.63, and 28.74 μM, respectively.

The structure of the compounds were determined as 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-galactopyranosyl-25(S)-spirost-5(6)-en-3beta-ol (1), 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-galactopyranosyl-25(S)-spirost-5(6),14(15)-dien-3beta-ol (2) and 3-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 2)-[beta-D-xylopyranosyl-(1 --> 3)]-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-(1 --> 4)-galactopyranosyl-25(S)-spirost-5 (6)-en-3beta, 14alpha-diol (3). Compound 2 was identified as a new compound. Compounds 1-3 were found to be strong against the growth of bacteria and plant pathogenic fungi.

Abstract:Twenty-five steroidal glycosides including eight undescribed compounds which were named as polygonatumosides H–O, were isolated from the 70 % EtOH extract of rhizomes of Polygonatum odoratum (Mill.) Druce (Asparagaceae). Their structures were elucidated by extensive spectroscopic analyses and chemical methods. The isolated compounds were evaluated cytotoxicity against three human cancer cell lines: human non-small cell lung cancer (A549), human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco2), and human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells. Five compounds showed cytotoxicity against these cell lines with IC50 values in the range of 1.7–30.8 μM.
