Abstract:The Hangzhou Grand Theatre is a multi-functional cultural complex with total floor space of approximately 50 000 m2. The main interior includes a Lyric Theatre have 1719 seats, a Studio Theatre, a Drama Theatre and a number of multi-purpose rooms. To satisfy the service requirement, it has many thin concrete walls with slenderness ratio of nearly 50. Linear and nonlinear techniques were used to analyze the stability of these walls. To accelerate the convergence of nonlinear buckling analysis and to ensure the accuracy of the results, a combination of the Aitken incremental method and the modified Newton-Raphson iterative method were used in the nonlinear analysis. Initial imperfections, plastic behavior and large deflection response of the walls were taken into account in the nonlinear analytic model. Numerical results indicated that the walls' linear buckling loads were far higher than the nonlinear stability and so it was necessary to apply the nonlinear stability solution. Compared to other methods, to reinforce the integration of thin concrete wall with adjacent structural members is the more effective method to increase wall stability. The permitted stability coefficient for an axial compressive component is also provided.
