Synthesis and Characterization of Hybrid Inorganic-Organic Nonlinear Optical Materials Containing Indanone

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) materials are of considerable interest for the development of electro-optic modulation, optical switching, data storage, and so on. Recently, hybrid sol-gel films exhibiting second-order NLO properties have attracted much attention due to their low optical propagation loss and feasibility of device fabrication. In this paper, a chromophore containing indanone was synthesized by Knoevenagel reaction between aldehyde and indanedione derivative, and then reacted with 3-isocyanatopropyl triethoxysilane (ICTES) to yield an alkoxysilane dye. Their molecular structures were characterized by elemental analysis, H-1-NMR, FTIR, and UV-visible spectra. Transparent spin-coated thin films were fabricated via the sol-gel process of alkoxysilane dye and TEOS. The NLO properties of chromophores and corona-poled films were analyzed by solvatochromic method and in situ second harmonic generation (SHG) measurement, respectively.
