Abstract:We propose a compact and simple all-optical subcarrier-multiplexed (SCM) label-swapping system employing an integrated electroabsorption modulation laser and a semiconductor optical amplifier based Mach-Zehnder interferometer wavelength converter. The experiments demonstrated error-free all-optical label swapping for the 155-Mb/s label and 10-Gb/s payload over two optical label-switching network nodes with less than 0.7-dB power penalty on the payload. The majority. of the components in this SCM label-swapping system can be realized on a semiconductor platform (e.g., InP), which implies a step toward possible monolithic or hybrid integration of the all-optical label-swapping system in the future.
Theoretical Analysis of the Performance of the SCM Label in the OLS Networks

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the generation, transmission and detection of the label signal in the optical SCM label switching system and clarify that the degradation of the label signal results from the fiber chromatic dispersion and the incomplete filtering out of the payload carrier. Our theoretical results show that the signal degradation is mainly caused by the fading effect and the expansion of the code edges. We also quantitatively analyze these theoretical results. The deep suppression of the optical carriers at receiver can greatly reduce the fading effect, and the electrical filtering and heterodyne detection techniques can improve the performance of the label signal. The time shift of the code edges leads to the closure of the label codes, which greatly limits the transmission distance as well as the radio frequency to generate the label subcarriers especially for the label with a high bit rate. SSB SCM can not only eliminate the closure of the label codes, but also reduce the fading effect. To our knowledge, this is the first time to develop a detail theoretical model to well explain the experimental results for SCM label switching systems.

Abstract:Transmission performance of the optical label with the double-sideband subcarrier multiplexing is investigated using Volterra transfer function approach. It is shown that the phase shifts of the two sideband signal is induced jointly by the interaction between SCM component and payload component due to fiber dispersion and nonlinearity. This will cause the SCM label fading, and then harm to system performance.

Abstract:This paper provides theoretical and experimental studies of radio-frequency (RF) photonics processing techniques applicable in subcarrier-multiplexed optical-label switching (OLS) communications systems. The paper provides an overview of various label-coding technologies and introduces subcarrier multiplexing (SCM) as an attractive technology for OLS networks. All-optical-label extraction using optical filters, such as fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs), provides an effective means to demodulate the SCM labels without inducing RF fading effects caused by fiber dispersion. Furthermore, the role of fiber nonlinearities in the RF fading effects are theoretically and experimentally verified. The all-optical label extraction and rewriting processes constitute optical-label swapping, wherein 2R data regeneration can take place. Scalable and cascadable OLS systems are feasible by applying viable RF photonics technologies in all-optical-label processing.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated some key techniques in label switching optical networks. These techniques include optical label generation, optical label swapping and preamble free clock recovery. The label generation using optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique has these advantages of high bit rate operation, low cross-talk and narrow bandwidth occupancy. The label swapping is realized by combining OCSS and wavelength conversion. The payload can be simultaneously regenerated after wavelength conversion; hence this technique is very useful for cascaded label swapping in label switched optical networks. We have also demonstrated how to realize preamble free clock recovery for burst mode label and payload generated by OCSS technique.

Abstract:Multibit optical code (OC) label and its en/decoder based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The multisampling technique is introduced into the label's encoder, then the maximum number of bits that one label can carry is significantly increased. The label's multibit information can be recognized by a single cascaded decoder. The experimental results show that a higher than 10-dB ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak and a higher than 9-dB ratio of autocorrelation peak to maximum autocorrelation wing can be realized simultaneously for label's recognition, so the multibit OC label is practical for optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate all-optical label-encoding format conversion from subcarrier-multiplexing to time-domain-multiplexing for 156.25 Mb/s labels and 10 Gb/s payload. The experiments show error-free operations with only 0.41 dB normalized power penalty for the payload.

Abstract:Optical label erasing is one of the critical issues in all-optical label swapping (AOLS) networks. In this paper, the cascaded performance analysis of the label eraser is proposed. The influences of the residual labels are also investigated. By means of the methods above, the performance of the fiber-loop mirror (FLM) eraser with cosine transfer function is compared with the Lyot–Sagnac eraser that has the much flatter passband and sharper notch.

Abstract:We demonstrate all-optical label encoding and updating for an orthogonally labeled signal in combined IM/FSK modulation format utilizing semiconductor lasers, semiconductor optical amplifiers and electro-absorption modulators. Complete functionality of a network node including two-hop transmission and all-optical label swapping is also experimentally demonstrated with overall penalty of less than 2 dB, proving the orthogonal IM/FSK labeling scheme to be a feasible solution for future optically labeled networks.

Abstract:All-optical label swapping is a promising approach to ultra-high packet-rate routing and forwarding directly in the optical layer. In this paper, we review results of the DARPA Next Generation Internet program in all-optical label swapping at University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB). We describe the overall network approach to encapsulate packets with optical labels and process forwarding and routing functions independent of packet bit rate and format. Various approaches to label coding using serial and subcarrier multiplexing addressing and the associated techniques for label erasure and rewriting, packet regeneration and packet-rate wavelength conversion are reviewed. These functions have been implemented using both fiber and semiconductor-based technologies and the ongoing effort at UCSB to integrate these functions is reported. We described experimental results for various components and label swapping functions and demonstration of 40 Gb/s optical label swapping. The advantages and disadvantages of using the various coding techniques and implementation technologies are discussed.

Abstract:As an alternative to label swapping, an all-optical label stripping scheme based on SOA-MZI is proposed. The stripping process is self-controlled without any synchronization process. Simulation results show that high-quality stripping can be achieved, with no more than 0.09 dB of power fluctuation and 0.05 dB of phase fluctuation in stripped and remaining label. A power contrast ratio of 28 dB between the remaining and residual stripped label, and 30-dB signal-to-noise ratio can be reached, respectively. Parameters tolerance analysis shows that the stripping performance deteriorates little when considering the devices' imperfection in practice. The multihop simulation results also show that our scheme is applicable to large-scale optical packet switching networks.

Abstract:SCM optical label swapping for high-speed payload has been a hot issue, since it was addressed as one of the most proposed technologies for building an optical switching network. In this work, a novel in-band SCM scheme of the optical label swapper with imposing Manchester encoding on the payload is proposed, in which interference between payload and label is small even though the SCM label is inserted at a low frequency. Simulations for packets composed of 100Gb/s QPSK payload and ASK SCM label over 80 km standard single-mode fiber are conducted and how performances of payload and label vary with different couple factor, label speed or SCM frequency are analyzed. Compared to in-band SCM label inserted by cascade modulation, performance of payload in the new architecture is almost independent of modulation index, and the receiver sensitivity of the payload is improved by nearly 10 dBm with only dispersion compensation.

Abstract:A novel optical label-swapping scheme using optical carrier suppression and separation (OCSS) technique without requiring any conventional wavelength converter is proposed and experimentally demonstrated in an optical label switched (OLS) network over 140-km transmission distance. Abstract:Parallel-to-cascading optical code (OC) label processing based on fiber Bragg grating is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. With this technique, the length of the multibit OC label is the same as that of the one-bit OC label; only one encoder and one decoder are needed for the multibit OC label's generation and recognition; the relatively low-speed recognition patterns also reduce the complexity of generating the control signal. The experimental results show that both the ratio of autocorrelation peak to cross-correlation peak (ACP/CCP) and the ratio of ACP to maximum autocorrelation wing are higher than 8 dB in the multibit label's decoded signal, so the parallel-to-cascading OC label processing is practical for optical packet switching networks.
