Abstract:This paper focuses on two issues in EPON, one is Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation which is one of the most important part in EPON. Meanwhile the media in the upstream (ONU to OLT) of EPON is a multipoint to point media, which means the EPON can't connect to those standard ethernet compatible devices. Combining these two issues we introduce an optimized bandwidth allocation scheme consisting of a parameter-based call admission control (CAC) mechanism, the evenly distributed algorithm (EDA), and the bandwidth guarantee polling (BGP) algorithm. Then we combine the info of scheme with some inter-frame of EPON. This scheme can allocate bandwidth according to the SLA of users, offer algorithm for EPON to agree to the standard ethernet compatible devices, and optimize the performance of EPON system.

Abstract:EPONs use a point-to-multipoint topology, in which multiple optical network units (ONUs) share one uplink channel to transmit multimedia traffic to a control element, the optical line terminal (OLT). Hence, to avoid data collision on the shared uplink, ensure a contention-free transmission and so on, medium access control arbitration mechanisms are essential for the successful implementation of EPONs. In this paper, a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm, the Integrated Two Classes Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation (ITCDBA), is put forward, in which the multipoint control protocol is used defined in the IEEE802.3ah standard. ITCDBA is a hierarchical allocation scheme which dynamically allocates bandwidth according to the instantaneous demands of ONUs, supporting inter-ONU priority scheduling as well as intra-ONU priority scheduling. The simulation result shows that the system throughput of EPON is improved with ITCDBA scheme and the drop rate of the traffic with the highest priority is lower than that with Two-layer bandwidth allocation (TLBA) scheme [11]. In a word, ITCDBA not only can allocate bandwidths between end users effectively and fairly, but also can support differentiated services. Besides, the system performance of EPONs with ITCDBA scheme is improved.

Abstract:This paper analyses current bandwidth schemes and proposes a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation scheme for EPON. According the scheme, we define four kinds of multimedia services such as Unsolicited Request Service (URS), Realtime Service (rt-S), Non-Real-time Service (nrt-S) and Best Effort (BE). Different kinds of services have different Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. Our scheme considers the diverse QoS request, e.g., delay for rt-S, throughput for nrt-S and fairness for BE. The simulation results show this novel scheme can ensure the quality of service (QoS) and improve bandwidth utilization.

One of the key problems in EPON is how to allocate the upstream bandwidth effectively. Abstract:Based on international standard and differentiated service mechanism, this paper proposes a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme for Ethernet-based Passive Optical Network(EPON)to effectively allocate bandwidth amongst the Optical Network Units (ONUs) in the upstream direction. It can guarantee the quality of service of the high priority traffic anyhow and assure the fairness for the same level of traffic of different ONUs as well as for the different levels of traffic in the same ONU. The simulation experiment results validate the improvements of the proposed scheme over the exiting one, especially under heavy load.

Abstract:A kind of multi-access scheme is needed in the upstream of EPON in order to avoid the collision of Ethernet packages. In the upstream of EPON, TMDA is widely used currently while WMDA looks great potential in the future. Based on TMDA technology, a modified dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm, which integrates Polling scheme and requesting priority, is proposed. Simulation results prove that the algorithm is characteristic of low average package delay and high bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:This paper presented a novel dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm that supports traffic estimation and bandwidth pre-allocation. To avoid the 'T + 2' queueing delay of high priority services, this algorithm forecasts their traffic, then assigns the equal amount of the bandwidth to them in advance according to the forecast results. Meanwhile, the rectification scheme is introduced to improve the bandwidth utilization. Once the bandwidth pre-allocated to high priority services is surplus, the rectification scheme will start to work from the next circle. The computer simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can meet the delay demands of high priority services and control the delay abnormity of low priority services simultaneously.

Abstract:Current Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms are mainly based on polling mechanism. Among these algorithms, limited bandwidth allocation can dynamically allocate bandwidth according to the queue length of Optical Network Units (ONUs), but it can’t obtain ONU’s queue length . Therefore, the future traffic amount is predicted through Wiener filtering, which is applied to limited bandwidth allocation. An improved dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed. This algorithm predicts the queue length of ONU and exactly reflects buffer status. It is available for OLT to allocate precise bandwidth to ONU. Finally, the result of simulation shows when the traffic load is between 0.1 and 0.5, mean packet delay is close to o.1ms.

Abstract:This paper proposes a software-defined EPON architecture which replaces the hardware-implemented DBA module with reprogrammable DBA module. The DBA module allows pluggable bandwidth allocation algorithms among multiple ONUs adaptive to traffic profiles and network states. We also introduce a bandwidth management scheme executed at the controller to manage the customized DBA algorithms for all date queues of ONUs. Our performance investigation verifies the effectiveness of this new EPON architecture, and numerical results show that software-defined EPONs can achieve less traffic delay and provide better support to service differentiation in comparison with traditional EPONs.

Abstract:As a promising solution for the next generation broadband access network, Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) are being designed to deliver multiple services and applications, such as voice communications, video conferencing, real-time transactions and new evolving bandwidth-consuming applications. To support these applications with their various requirements, Quality-of-Service (QoS) management over EPON is required. In this study, we present a novel scheduling scheme, hierarchical weighted bandwidth guaranteed (HWBG) scheme, which could effectively support QoS. Simulation results validate that the proposed scheme can achieve high efficiency and improve packet delay performance.

Abstract:Ethernet-based Passive optical network (E-PON) is the key for next generation access networks. It must have the property of high efficiency, low cost, and support quality of service (QoS). We present a novel media access control (MAC) protocol that maximizes network efficiency by using dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) algorithm suitable for E-PON. This protocol minimizes packet delay and delay variation for high priority traffic to ensure QoS. Simulation results show excellent network throughput. Simulation results also show low packet delay and packet delay variation for high priority traffic compare with traditional MAC protocol of E-PON. When the network performs ranging, this protocol ensures zero interruption of high priority traffic, such as audio or video applications.

Abstract:An enhanced dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm in hybrid WDM/TDM PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In addition to the fairness of bandwidth allocation, this algorithm also considers the varying propagation delays between ONUs and OLT. The simulation based on MATLAB indicates that the improved algorithm has a better performance compared with some other algorithms.

Abstract:Hybrid wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM)/time-division-multiplexing (TDM) ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) can achieve low per-subscriber cost and scalability to increase the number of subscribers. This paper discusses dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm in hybrid WDM/TDM EPONs. Based on the correlation structure of the variable bit rate (VBR) video traffic, we propose a quality-of-service (QoS) supported DWBA using adaptive linear traffic prediction. Wavelength and timeslot are allocated dynamically by optical line terminal (OLT) to all optical network units (ONUs) based on the bandwidth requests and the guaranteed service level agreements (SLA) of all ONUs. Mean square error of the predicted average arriving rate of compound video traffic during waiting period is minimized through Wiener-Hopf equation. Simulation results show that the DWBA-adaptive-linear-prediction (DWBA-ALP) algorithm can significantly improve the QoS performances in terms of low delay and high bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:With rapid growth of Internet applications, supporting differentiated service and enlarging system capacity have been new tasks for next generation access system. In recent years, research in OFDMA Passive Optical Networks (PON) has experienced extraordinary development as for its large capacity and flexibility in scheduling. Although much work has been done to solve hardware layer obstacles for OFDMA PON, scheduling algorithm on OFDMA PON system is still under primary discussion. In order to support QoS service on OFDMA PON system, a novel dynamic wavelength bandwidth allocation (DWBA) algorithm is proposed in this paper. Per-stream QoS service is supported in this algorithm. Through simulation, we proved our bandwidth allocation algorithm performs better in bandwidth utilization and differentiate service support.

Abstract:In the IEEE 100G-EPON, channel bonding enables ONUs to work on multiple wavelengths simultaneously to achieve higher peak rates. Three types of ONUs (25G, 50G and100G ONUs) share all the 100G bandwidth and each type of ONUs have a total capacity constraint. In this paper, a fair and flexible dynamic wavelength and bandwidth allocation algorithm is proposed for 100G-EPON. Proposed algorithm considers weighted fair as well as capacity constraints for each type of ONUs. Simulation results show that ONUs share bandwidth fairly based on their weights. Besides, overloaded ONUs can flexibly share the bandwidth within capacity constraints.
