Abstract:Due to beyond loads and rare earthquakes,full failure and progressive collapse may be happened on large-span beam string-structures.Considering the uncertainty of structure and resistance,fragility analysis on beam string-structures has been finished under beyond loads and rare earthquakes.At first,employing Monte Carlo and Latin hypercube sampling methods,the relationship between alive load amplitude and the failure probability was studied,the static fragility curves were drawn.Secondly,based on time-history method,the relationship of seismic intensity and the failure probability of structural collapse was considered,the seismic fragility curves were gotten too.The influence of different pre-stress distribution on structural fragility was also discussed and the following results were obtained.Fragility curve can predict the failure probability of structure under beyond loads and rare earchtuqkes,large-span beam string-structures have lower fragility,and as the pre-stress increases,the performances of structure are improved.

Abstract:The life-cycle reliability of engineering structures was analyzed from a historic viewpoint.Review of historic failure accidents reveals that the structure reliability under ordinary loads and ordinary use purpose can be ensured by current design codes.However,there are still many things to be understood especially regarding structure reliability in construction/aging stages and even more things to be investigated regarding structure safety in some extraordinary conditions such as explosion,shock and fire.The state-of-the-art of these problems were reviewed,especially regarding reliability problems analyzed from the viewpoint of load-resistance distribution model,structure failure probability-(acceptable) target failure probability and sensitivity analysis-structure modification.Due to the difference of load-resistance distribution model and the target failure probability,the well-known load and resistance factor design(LRFD) method may not be an effective approach.

Abstract:The strategy on repair and strengthening of existing bridges based on time-dependent reliability was analyzed with the maximum expected benefit as the objective function. A sample of risk-ranking decision was illustrated based on updated inspection information with 35 survival age. The effect of improvement of live loads and difference of repair methods on time-dependent reliability of existing bridges are considered. The results show that the decision method can be used in real project, with the cost of failure consequence and the risk of failure considered.

Abstract:Probabilistic analysis of damage states of structures under seismic excitations is one of key problems in the optimal protection level decision-making and minimum life-cycle cost design of aseismic structures.The authors put forward two practical approaches to evaluation of seismic damage state probabilities of structures in the past,according to the three-level seismic design principle and results of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis of earthquake intensity.The foundation of seismic fragility theory is built for evaluation of seismic damage state probabilities of structures,in which the concepts and definitions of limit state seismic fragility and damage state seismic fragility are presented.The two practical analysis approaches for evaluation of seismic damage state probabilities of structure are analyzed thoroughly from the viewpoint of seismic fragility theory.It is found that the first approach is a semi-theoretical and semi-empirical seismic fragility analysis method,which considers the uncertainty in the macro-scope seismic capacity of structures;while the second approach is a simplified seismic fragility analysis method,which doesn't consider the uncertainty in the macro-scope seismic capacity of structures.The two approaches are compared on the basis of the computing results of seismic damage state probabilities of structures,and the suggestions of selection of two simplified seismic fragility methodologies for the optimal protection level decision-making and minimum life-cycle cost design of aseismic structures are offered.

Abstract:By combination of the 3-D finite element method with the response surface method, a reliability analysis is made of the structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type prestressed aqueduct, which has been widely used in the South-to-North Water Transfer Middle Route Project. The result shows that the reliability of the aqueduct structure meets the design requirement, and that the response surface method is an effective method for reliability analysis of the aqueduct structure of the open-spandrel truss-arch type.

Abstract:The target reliability indices of the foundation structures of sea-crossing bridges on the serviceability limit state (SLS) are different from those of common bridges due to their different surroundings.Consequently,three levels of the target reliability indices,which are 1.5,2.0 and 2.3,respectively,for those structures on the SLS are suggested based on the Joint Committee on Structural Safety (JCSS) model code,and a new method of calibrating factors of live loads,which is based on the contribution ratio of tensile stresses of reinforcing bars produced by various loads to the maximum crack width of concrete,is proposed.Finally,the calibration of the reliability-based factors of the frequent value and the quasi-permanent value of live loads is conducted by the Joint Committee (JC) method through an actual design,and the indices are proved to be reasonable and the new method is proved to be feasible.

Abstract:To actualize multilevel and multi-target fortification of performance-based seismic design (PBSD), firstly, the relationship of exceedance probability of basic variable with object reliability and sensitivity coefficient of limit state is built according to the corresponding relation between reliability index and check points; Secondly, by using seismic hazard analysis, seismic object reliability index and equality exceedance probability rule, "multilevel design reliability index" is put forward that achieves multilevel seismic fortification of PBSD for structures with different importance and design reference periods; Lastly, PBSD seismic fortification criterion based on structural reliability is given using tables and expressions combined with Chinese seismic design code.

Abstract:Aimed at the characteristics that design conditions of the foundation structures of offshore long-span-bridges are different from that of common bridges, the partial factors, the target reliability indices and the factors of wind load in different design fields were all analyzed. Then, three levels of target reliability indices which are 1.5, 2.0 and 2.3 respectively, and the corresponding factors of frequent value and quasi-permanent value of live loads based on JCSS model code with JC method were suggested. Commended values are proved to be reasonable with an actual structural design, and it makes good sense for the corresponding design and safety estimation of offshore long-span-bridge.

Abstract:This paper studies reliability - based damage performance design of structures with load and resistance factor design method. The suitable stochastic model of ground motion is chosen and corresponding parameters are determined. The calibration method of load factors of reinforced concrete structures is set up based on damage failure mode, using response surface method (RSM) Damage reliability of the reinforced concrete structures is computed with Monte Carlo simulation method, and computation efficiency is improved remarkably when importance sampling method is used. The damage reliability of current seismic code is obtained. The relationship between load factors and target failure probabilities is determined, which provides reliability theory base for the shift from current seismic code to performance - based seismic code.

Abstract:To assess the safety of a jacket platform subjected to an accidental disaster, a system reliability-based method for assessment of the damaged platform was proposed. Considering the structure-pile-soil nonlinear interaction, the capacity calculation model of the damaged jacket platform subjected to extreme environment loads was established according to the nonlinear step by step pushover analysis method. Based on the Monte Carlo simulation, the system reliability-based assessment was performed. The method was applied for the assessment of BZ28-1 south platform system. The results show that the reliability index of damaged jacket platform subjected to explosion is similar to the original one, with the explosion affecting the overall structure insignificantly. The reliability index of damaged platforms subjected to fire is smaller than the original one, with the fire hazard being the main reason for failure of the damaged jacket platform structure. The jacket platform can take the failure probability of 3.0 × 10 -3 as heavy repair criterion.

Abstract:The Nonlinear seismic reliability of reinforced concrete structures was investigated using an earthquake ground motion model and a structural analysis model properly selected and the stochastic seismic response of the structures was analysed to gain statistics on stochastic response of structure. Based a structural damage model with double parameters, formula were formulated for calculating structural earthquake damage probability using the structural reliability theory. The analysis of the seismic reliability of a reinforced concrete frame structure designed with design intensity VIII proved that the method is feasible, and it can also be used to establish the standards for earthquake-resistant designs and to forecast an earthquake disaster.

Abstract:A decision-making method of the optimal seismic fortification level for aseismic structures based on damage performance is proposed in the paper. According to the definition of damage index, a seismic damage model with two linearly combined weighting parameters is established. A simplified method is provided to calculate the damage index. Based on the three level design principle, a practical seismic damage performance objective is suggested. A practical formula of the damage limit state is obtained. Two methods of aseismic design based on the damage performance are put forward, which include the conventional design and the minimum-cost design. Considering the fuzzy probabilities of the seismic damage levels, a macroscopic method is developed for aseismic structures.

Abstract:Seismic reliability is very important to the seismic design and the study of the bridge.Based on the theory of the response surface of random vibration and response spectrum method,an algorithm for the seismic reliability analysis of the structures with random parameters is proposed.The structural failure criteria and the equations under their limit states are studied and the dynamic reliabilitiy of the high-pier and long-span rigid frame subjected to seismic excitation in its design basic period is computed.The random of the structure parameters and the site condition of this bridge is taken into account when it's failure seismic reliability is computed for the low-level earthquake,design earthquake and high-level earthquake respectively.According to the three-level seismic fortification criterion in the code for seismic design of bridge,the seismic reliabilitiy of the bridge is calculated in their design basic period.The conclusion shows that the design of this bridge meets the demands of the seismic code.

Abstract:Reliability analysis considering damage effect of materials is studied for concrete structures. The damage bounding surface concept is introduced to develop the modified four parameter Hsieh-Ting-Chen model. Based on the modified model, a limited state function corresponding initial damage surface is constituted to study the safety of huge bulk concrete structures. Combining the response surface method and the finite element method to fit the limited state function, an approach that can be used to analyze reliability of complicated structures is established. As an example, a gravity dam is selected to study its reliability under static and dynamic loads with the approach. Satisfactory results are obtained.

Abstract:The structures of aqueduct play an important role in the middle route canal system of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project. Aimed at the problem of inadequate reliability analysis of aqueduct structure, the modes of failure are analyzed with examples of typical beam aqueducts, the corresponding functions are established, and the reliability indexes related are derived. The system reliability indexes of the aqueduct structures are calculated on the basis of consideration of the correlation among the different failure modes.

Abstract:Seismic risk analysis includes three aspects,i.e.,seismic hazard analysis,seismic fragility analysis and seismic loss assessment. Among the three contents,the seismic fragility analysis is very important to seismic design,retrofit and upgrading decision-making of engineering structures in that it can predict the probability of unfulfilling the prescribed levels of performance requirements under all levels of seismic actions.Traditionally,the seismic fragility curves are depicted by using empirical methods or Monte Carlo simulation methods.In this paper,the basic principles of seismic risk analysis are firstly introduced,and then,the concept of global seismic fragility of structures is put forward.To overcome the problems in the traditional methods,a new method for global seismic fragility analysis of structures is proposed by combing the methodologies of structural reliability with the theory of performance-based seismic design,the seismic fragility of structures is computed by way of the finite element reliability methods.Taking the maximum storey-level relative deformation of structures as a global seismic performance index,the seismic fragility is analyzed for a five-storey,two-bay steel frame structure,and the seismic fragility curves corresponding to different performance levels under three levels of seismic actions are depicted by using the proposed method.
Nonlinear Static Seismic Reliability Analysis of Steel Frame Structures II: Reliability Index and Its Sensitivity

Abstract:The reliability analysis of large-scale complex structures with implicit performance functions can be realized by combining the finite element response and its sensitivity analysis with the approximate analytical methods in structural reliability theory.In this companion paper,the finite element methods and computational reliability methods including FORM and SORM are efficiently integrated by mechanical transformation,probability transformation and response sensitivity analysis based on the theory of nonlinear displacement fiber beam-column element and direct differential response sensitivity formulations.According to the current seismic design code,the seismic limit state functions of strength and displacement are built up for typical members and storey levels of steel frames.Based on the equivalent static model of the random seismic action,the seismic reliability and its sensitivities of a practical engineering structure is analyzed by the nonlinear finite element reliability method.The results show that although the reliability index for storey-level displacement is high under the action of severe earthquakes,the strength reliability index is very low.This reveals that the structure is still at the high risk of failure.Therefore,it is not sufficient to check the load-carrying capacity reliability under minor earthquakes and deformation reliability under major earthquakes.It is necessary to verify the ultimate load-carrying capacity reliability under both moderate and major earthquakes.
Optimal fortification load decision-making and life-cycle cost design for aseismic structures according to Chinese codes

Abstract:Anew model of life-cycle cost for aseismic structures is put forward in the present paper, which includes the minimum initial cost and the expected seismic loss under the future earthquakes during the design reference period. The function relationship between the minimum initial cost and the fortification load is derived through a series of minimum-cost seismic design subjected to the provisions of the Chinese codes by successively adjusting the fortification load. The expected seismic loss is the sum of the products of seismic risk probabilities with the corresponding economic losses. The probabilistic seismic risk analysis (PSRA) includes probabilistic seismic hazard analysis (PSHA) and probabilistic seismic fragility analysis (PSFA). The type IIIextreme distribution of the seismic intensity is adopted for the seismic hazard in the mainland of China. The simplified seismic fragility curves of four damage states are provided according to the three-level fortification principle in the Chinese seismic design codes of buildings, and then, the damage probability matrix can be developed by way of this practical seismic risk methodology. A two-stage life-cycle cost design methodology is presented for aseismic structures, in which the decision of the optimal fortification load (OFL) is made during the first stage, while the minimum-cost design under the optimal fortification load is taken in the second stage. The feasibility of the proposed procedure is demonstrated in a numerical example where the methodology is applied to the life-cycle cost design of a four-storey three-bay steel frame building.

Abstract:The braced structures of excavation may regard as the series system that consists of three kinds of main failures mode including in overturning resistant stability,instability of the protruding excavation bottom,overall instability of braced structures.Through the project example,establishing the limit state equation of the braced structures of excavation,the failure probability and reliability index and are obtained by the method of Monte-Carlo.The result for cantilever bracing structure show that three kinds of main failures mode were ranked as follows,from highest to lowest effect: overturning resistant stability,overall instability and instability of the protruding excavation bottom.Bulk density,coherent force and angle of internal friction of soil are the main influencing factors which affected the reliability index of the failure mode.
