Abstract:In this paper, we propose a new definition of fuzzy partition out of intuition. Its properties are well studied. According to the new definition, we can prove that the first term of minimax (MM) decomposition of any fuzzy partition can be a nondegenerate hard partition.

Abstract:Fuzzy clustering is one of the most important fuzzy techniques. This paper adopts a relational degree as similarity measurement between objects, and thus forms relational clustering which may find wide applications in social systems and economic systems. At the same time, this paper presents a kind of recomposed fuzzy clustering which can be used to execute the task of partitioning and evaluation for a lot of objects in many systems effectively.

Abstract:In this paper, the minimum spanning tree problem is investigated on the graph with fuzzy edge weights. The notion of fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree is presented based on the credibility measure, and then the solutions of the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem are discussed under different assumptions. First, we respectively, assume that all the edge weights are triangular fuzzy numbers and trapezoidal fuzzy numbers and prove that the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem can be transformed to a classical problem on a crisp graph in these two cases, which can be solved by classical algorithms such as the Kruskal algorithm and the Prim algorithm in polynomial time. Subsequently, as for the case that the edge weights are general fuzzy numbers, a fuzzy simulation-based genetic algorithm using Prufer number representation is designed for solving the fuzzy α-minimum spanning tree problem. Some numerical examples are also provided for illustrating the effectiveness of the proposed solutions.

Abstract: Strong-uniform fuzzy partition is necessary for the accuracy of fuzzy partition-based histograms. Most previous research focused on constructing one-dimensional strong-uniform fuzzy partitions. While to the best of our knowledge, few have been reported for high-dimensional cases. In order to fill this theoretical vacancy, this paper proves the existence of high-dimensional strong-uniform fuzzy partitions via proposing an analytic formula to construct strong-uniform fuzzy partitions of arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:This paper presents a method to establish functional inequalities via fuzzy decomposition on the state space, which generalizes earlier results dealing with exact partitions of the state space. Given a reversible Markov chain on a finite state space, we define its projection chain and restriction chains from classes of a fuzzy partition on the state space. The Poincaré, log-Sobolev and modified log-Sobolev inequalities associated with the original chain can be estimated from those of its projection chain and restriction chains which tend to have simpler structures and hence easier to work with. An application of this generalization is presented in which the fuzzy decomposition method applies but its exact partitioning counterpart does not.

Abstract:Fuzzy partitional clustering algorithms are widely used in pattern recognition field. Until now, more and more research results on them have been developed in the literature. In order to study these algorithms systematically and deeply, they are reviewed in this paper based on c-means algorithm, from metrics, entropy, and constraints on membership function or cluster centers. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of the typical fuzzy partitional algorithms are discussed. It is pointed out that the standard FCM algorithm is robust to the scaling transformation of dataset, while others are sensitive to such transformation. Such conclusion is experimentally verified when implementing the standard FCM and the maximum entropy clustering algorithm. Finally, the problems existing in these algorithms and the prospects of the fuzzy partitional algorithms are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, an entropy-based adaptive fuzzy membership partition method is proposed. The method is based on the definition of entropy with an expectation of balancing the total entropy of the training data under certain partition setting. Without any prior knowledge of the data, the method can adaptively find out how many partitions are suitable for each variable. Firstly, the method is tested in the Mackey-Glass time series and shows good performance. Secondly, it is adopted in a fuzzy model which is constructed by using Wang-Mendel method for operator functional state prediction. The prediction result shows the proposed method is quite useful and can be used in the future fuzzy system construction work.

Abstract:In this paper, the concept of intuitionistic fuzzy mapping as a generalization of fuzzy mapping is presented, and its' relationship with intuitionistic fuzzy relations is derived. Moreover, some basic operations of intuitionistic fuzzy mappings are defined, hence we can conclude that all of intuitionistic fuzzy mappings constitute a soft algebra with respect to these operations. Afterwards, the Atanassov's operator is applied to intuitionistic fuzzy mappings and the corresponding properties are examined. Finally, the decomposition and representation theorems of intuitionistic fuzzy mappings are established.
A Min-Max Cut Algorithm for Graph Partitioning and Data Clustering

Abstract:An important application of graph partitioning is data clustering using a graph model - the pairwise similarities between all data objects form a weighted graph adjacency matrix that contains all necessary information for clustering. Here we propose a new algorithm for graph partition with an objective function that follows the min-max clustering principle. The relaxed version of the optimization of the min-max cut objective function leads to the Fiedler vector in spectral graph partition. Theoretical analyses of min-max cut indicate that it leads to balanced partitions, and lower bonds are derived. The min-max cut algorithm is tested on news-group datasets and is found to outperform other current popular partitioning/clustering methods. The linkage-based refinements in the algorithm further improve the quality of clustering substantially. We also demonstrate that the linearized search order based on linkage differential is better than that based on the Fiedler vector, providing another effectivepartition method.

Abstract:This paper deals with the problem of determining the most appropriate number of clusters in a fuzzy Mahalanobis partition. First, a new fuzzy Mahalanobis incremental algorithm is constructed to search for an optimal fuzzy Mahalanobis partition with clusters. Among these partitions, selecting the one with the most appropriate number of clusters is based on appropriately modified existing fuzzy indexes. In addition, the Fuzzy Mahalanobis Minimal Distance index is defined as a natural extension of the recently proposed Mahalanobis Minimal Distance index for non-fuzzy clustering. The new fuzzy Mahalanobis incremental algorithm was tested on several artificial data sets and the color image segmentation problems from real-world applications: art images, nature photography images, and medical images. The algorithm includes multiple usage of the global optimization algorithm DIRECT . But unlike previously known fuzzy Mahalanobis indexes, the proposed Fuzzy Mahalanobis Minimal Distance index ensures accurate results even when applied to complex real-world applications. A possible disadvantage could be the need for longer CPU time. Furthermore, besides effective identification of the partition with the most appropriate number of clusters, it is shown how to use the proposed Fuzzy Mahalanobis Minimal Distance index to search for an acceptable partition, which proved particularly useful in the above-mentioned real-world applications.

Abstract:Centroid-based methods including k-means and fuzzy c-means are known as effective and easy-to-implement approaches to clustering purposes in many applications. However, these algorithms cannot be directly applied to supervised tasks. This paper thus presents a generative model extending the centroid-based clustering approach to be applicable to classification and regression tasks. Given an arbitrary loss function, the proposed approach, termed Supervised Fuzzy Partitioning (SFP), incorporates labels information into its objective function through a surrogate term penalizing the empirical risk. Entropy-based regularization is also employed to fuzzify the partition and to weight features, enabling the method to capture more complex patterns, identify significant features, and yield better performance facing high-dimensional data. An iterative algorithm based on block coordinate descent scheme is formulated to efficiently find a local optimum. Extensive classification experiments on synthetic, real-world, and high-dimensional datasets demonstrate that the predictive performance of SFP is competitive with state-of-the-art algorithms such as SVM and random forest. SFP has a major advantage over such methods, in that it not only leads to a flexible, nonlinear model but also can exploit any convex loss function in the training phase without compromising computational efficiency.

Abstract:Methodology is described for fitting a fuzzy partition and a parsimonious consensus hierarchy (ultrametric matrix) to a set of hierarchies of the same set of objects. A model defining a fuzzy partition of a set of hierarchical classifications, with every class of the partition synthesized by a parsimonious consensus hierarchy is described. Each consensus includes an optimal consensus hard partition of objects and all the hierarchical agglomerative aggregations among the clusters of the consensus partition. The performances of the methodology are illustrated by an extended simulation study and applications to real data. A discussion is provided on the new methodology and some interesting future developments are described.

Abstract:Motivated by some deep problems in optimization and control theory, convexity theory has been extended to the various infinite dimensional functional spaces. The separation theorems play key roles in developing convexity theory. In this paper, we focus on the convexity problem in the framework of fuzzy quasi-normed spaces. First, we give some separation results of convex sets, and show a characterization of a closed convex subset with the aid of the dual of a fuzzy quasi-normed space. Second, we introduce the concept of an extreme point and generalize the famous Krein–Milman theorem to a fuzzy quasi-normed space. The obtained results of this paper will play key roles in convex programming and optimization problems of fuzzy quasi-normed spaces.

Abstract:To measure the fuzziness of fuzzy sets, this paper introduces a distance-based and a fuzzy entropy-based measurements. Then these measurements are generalized to measure the fuzziness of fuzzy partition, namely partition fuzziness. According to the relationship between the validity of fuzzy partition and its partition fuzziness, a family of cluster validity functions is proposed based on the modified partition fuzziness. The new cluster validity functions overcome the increasing tendency of the traditional partition fuzziness with the cluster number, which provides an effective analysis methodology for fuzzy cluster validity. The experimental results with different testing data sets illustrate the effectiveness, reliability, sensitivity and applicability of the proposed cluster validity function.

Abstract:This work focuses on fuzzy orthopartitions and credal partitions, which are distinct mathematical models representing partitions where the membership of elements to classes is only partially known. Firstly, we show that fuzzy orthopartitions and credal partitions are special cases of generalized fuzzy orthopartitions, which we introduce in this article as a new structure for modelling partitions with uncertainty. Next, we examine the connections between credal partitions and fuzzy orthopartitions, considering that both can be seen as types of fuzzy partitions (in particular, we deal with fuzzy probabilistic and Ruspini partitions). Moreover, we find that each generalized fuzzy orthopartition corresponds to a collection of zero, one, or infinitely many credal partitions; conversely, a credal partition maps to at most one generalized fuzzy orthopartition. Finally, we identify the class of all credal partitions that coincide with fuzzy orthopartitions.

Abstract:With the probability rules and the degree of coverage of elements in the partition set, and the combination of the Fuzzy Set Theory and Rough Set Theory, a new extension of Fuzzy Rough Set theory was proposed. It is defined the maximum of Rough Set membership function, the minimum of Rough Set membership function, the average of Rough Set membership function, the upper minimum of Rough Set membership function and the lower maximum of Rough Set membership function. The properties of the extension for the Rough Set membership functions are also given. This made Fuzzy Set Theory and Rough Set Theory complemented each other and provided a new way to deal with incomplete data.
