Abstract:A hydrothermal vent system is one of the most unique marine environments on Earth. The cycling hydrothermal fluid hosts favorable conditions for unique life forms and novel mineralization mechanisms, which have attracted the interests of researchers in fields of biological, chemical and geological studies. Shallow-water hydrothermal vents located in coastal areas are suitable for hydrothermal studies due to their close relationship with human activities. This paper presents a summary of the developments in exploration and detection methods for shallow-water hydrothermal systems. Mapping and measuring approaches of vents, together with newly developed equipment, including sensors, measuring systems and water samplers, are included. These techniques provide scientists with improved accuracy, efficiency or even extended data types while studying shallow-water hydrothermal systems. Further development of these techniques may provide new potential for hydrothermal studies and relevant studies in fields of geology, origins of life and astrobiology.

Abstract:Developing robots integrating sensors, actuators, and computational capabilities for deep‐sea exploration is challenging. Nature often offers innovative solutions to complex problems, and in this context, inspiration is drawn from the remarkable abilities of deep‐sea snails, specifically their unique tentacles, often referred to as “eyestalks” due to the presence of an eye at their tip. Herein, “DeepStalk,” a soft robot designed for deep‐sea exploration, is introduced, utilizing three shape memory alloys (SMAs) springs that mimic the three tentacle flexor muscles of deep‐sea snails. Overall, DeepStalk incorporates sensory, actuation, and control modules for operation under high hydrostatic pressure. To achieve precise control of its orientation in 3D space, a simple and reliable vector‐PID controller is developed. Remarkably, the robot successfully maintains its desired bending attitude even at 30 MPa hydrostatic pressure, achieved through the Joule heating of SMA springs. Furthermore, DeepStalk demonstrates the capability to track moving objects underwater, showcasing its potential application in challenging environments at depths of up to 20 MPa. This marks the first attempt for soft robots to integrate sensor, actuator, and control modules capable of complex tasks under high hydrostatic pressure. This innovative research advances integrated soft robotic systems for deep‐sea exploration field.

Abstract:Deep-sea environment, characterized by high pressures, extremely high/low temperatures, limited photosynthesis-generated organic matter, darkness, and high levels of corrosion, is home to flourishing special ecosystems in the world. Here, we illustrate how the deep-sea equipment offers insights into the study of life in the deep sea based on the work in the past five decades. We first describe how organisms in the deep sea are studied, even though it is highly difficult to get access to such extreme environments. We then explain the role of deep-sea technologies in advancing research on the evolution of organisms in hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, seamounts, oceanic trenches, and whale falls from the following perspectives: biological diversity, mechanisms of environmental adaptation, biological evolution, and ecosystem connectivity. Finally, to better understand the function and service of deep-sea organisms, and further conserve the special creatures under anthropologic activity and climate change, we highlight the importance of innovative deep-sea technologies to promote cutting-edge research on deep-sea organisms, and note the remaining challenges and developing directions for deep-sea equipment.

Abstract:The measurement and control system of exiting conventional CTD sampler suffers from low automation level and complicated operation.In order to solve this problem,a measurement and control system based on LabVIEW for gas-tight deep-sea water sampler was developed.The measurement principle of temperature,salinity and depth was studied.The hardware and software of the system were designed.In the year of 2009,the measurement and control system worked well during the HY4-2009-2 cruise of "Hai Yang Si Hao" research vessel in South China Sea.Quick and precise control of the gas-tight deep-sea water sampler was achieved.The acquisition,processing,display and storage of temperature,salinity and depth parameters were implemented conveniently in real-time.The results of sea trials show that the system features high measurement and control precision,good stability and reliability,high automation level and easy operation.The system is appreciated by researchers.Furthermore,the proposed method can also be used widely in the measurement and control systems of various oceanic instruments and equipment.

Abstract:In order to provide firsthand reference data for model building and analysis of temperature field of seafloor hydrothermal vent, a temperature measurement system is designed, which can be used to measure the temperature of seafloor hydrothermal vent. The system can implement in situ multipoint temperature measurement and work for 15 days on the seafloor, so low power consumption design principle of the integrated circuit board is adopted. To enable the system to endure the high pressure on the seafloor, mechanical structure of the system is designed in terms of design principle of pressure container. The pressure test experiment was performed in the authoritative institution, and the results indicated that the 'system' was safe and could work reliably on the seafloor. In the first Sino-American Joint Dive Cruise, the instruments were carried to the seafloor to work by Alvin. The experiment in the sea was successful, and the results indicated that the system could survive in the high pressure and high temperature environment and record the temperature activities of hydrothermal vents. About 710000 groups of temperature data were acquired, and these are of importance for further scientific researches.

Abstract:An in situ chemical sensor system has been developed owing to a continuous effort involving lab and field-testing over the past ten years. The sensor has been used successfully to simultaneously measure pH, dissolved H2, and dissolved H2S concentrations in seafloor hot spring fluids at temperature and pressure conditions up to 380degC and 250 bars. Abstract:Microorganisms play an irreplaceable role in ocean ecological environment and material circulation due to their pervasiveness, abundance, and metabolic diversity [1] . With extreme conditions of low temperature, high pressure and high salinity, microorganisms in deep ocean usually have some unique characteristics. In recent years, more and more researchers have turned their attention to the sampling as well as analysis of deep-ocean microorganisms [2] . Study on the genetic material and information of deep-ocean microorganisms not only can help us understand the origin and evolution of deep-ocean life, but also has great significance for the development of biological enzymes and medicines.

Abstract:This report details the development and application of a novel pressure-retaining sampler for hadal trenches. A special sampling mechanism makes the sampler unnecessary to equip an extra actuator for sealing. The developed control system and PC software allow the sampler to work automatically on the seabed. The high-pressure chamber test proved the proposed pressurization mechanism could significantly improve the pressure-retaining performance. The sampler was field-tested at a depth exceeding 10,800 m in the Mariana Trench and captured 174 amphipods with a pressure-retaining rate of over 82%.

Abstract:The deep sea is a huge treasure trove of biological resources, but so far researches on deep-sea organisms is far from enough. This study designed an hadal trenches macro organisms sampling device that can be used at a depth of 11,000 m. This research mainly solves the problem of pressure compensation mechanism during the recovery of the sampler and the sealing problem of ultra-high pressure hydraulic system. The theoretical analysis and calculation of the high pressure mechanism leakage model, the wall thickness of the sampling cylinder, the pressure loss of the sampling cylinder, and the inflation volume of the pressure compensation mechanism are carried out. This study provides a detailed description of the organism trapping mechanism. Finite element analysis of key components was performed to determine its feasibility. In order to verify the reliability of the device, a pressure test is performed on the ultra-high pressure vessel to prepare for the sea trial.

Abstract:The water around submarine hydrothermal vents has significant turbidity and chemical composition anomalies, providing an important indicator for finding hydrothermal vents. In this paper, a detection method of submarine hydrothermal vents was proposed, and a low-power chemical sensor hydrothermal detection system was designed. The chemical sensor can detect real-time potential values of pH, H2S, Eh, and CO32- when mounted on the relevant detection platform. Combined with abnormal turbidity, we can infer the location of hydrothermal vents. The results of the testing in the Southwest Indian Ridge showed that the chemical sensor can effectively detect chemical abnormalities caused by hydrothermal activity, which is an effective technique for detecting hydrothermal vents.

Abstract:During AT11-7 Alvin/Atlantis cruise in America, newly developed chemical sensor and self-contained multi-channel data logging instruments which were designed by Zhejiang University, China were tested at the depth of 2500m to quantify variations of time series in hydrothermal vent fluid chemistry. The units were placed at different vent sites taking data at a rate of 5 second per-scan and recording up to 12 days. This experiment is the first time to detect the hydrothermal vent for 12 days in the world. The key technique is that the data logger must have low power consumption and large storage for uninterruptedly detecting for a long time just used by 3 normal batteries. Some strict requirements must be satisfied for any sensor data logging system deployed in this extreme conditions: more than one chemical species along with temperature should be simultaneously measured and recorded, the acquired signals need to be amplified, regulated, and stored in the memory inside the pressure chamber of small size and low power consumption. The multi-channel sensor data logger mainly consists of two parts: the sensor housing (40 cm x 5 cm diameter) and the circuit housing (38 cm x 8 cm diameter), which can be easily connected to the sensors through a underwater connector and cable. The sensor signals sampled in half an hour intervals permit the unit to operate for over a year. The total weight of the sensor-logger unit is less than 8 kg, so it can be easily brought to seafloor vent system by various submersibles.

Abstract:There is a great demand for in-situ real-time chemical sensors in the oceanographic research, to measure the chemical components under the deep sea. The ISE (Ion Selective Electrode) is commonly used as a detecting part of deep-sea electro-chemical sensors. The paper highlights the solidification and micromation of the working and reference electrodes. The sensors of pH and H2S with a thermal probe are accomplished after the solution of configuration of electrodes and signal processing. The sensor system has been tested successfully in the cruise of DY105-12, 14 sponsored by China Ocean Mineral Research and Exploitation Association(COMRA).

Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), pioneered by Zhong Lin Wang in 2012, represent a revolutionary leap in energy harvesting and self-powered sensing technologies. In response to the unique challenges posed by the underwater environment, a specialized application of TENGs has emerged: underwater TENGs. These innovative devices hold the potential to transform underwater exploration by increasing energy harvesting, expanding sensing capabilities, and enhancing communication systems. Abstract:Deep-sea microbe has enormous potential in biological gene and metabolite and research related has been more and more popular. Methods of their study are divided into In-Situ studies and laboratory studies. In-Situ studies conduct experiments directly on the deep-sea floor, which brings no worry on the changes of environmental factors. However, laboratory studies involve the retrieval of samples from the water depths which would result in changes in environmental factors. Deep-sea microbes are sensitive to the changes in environmental factors, especially temperature and pressure which affect their biologically active and even existence. Laboratory studies need equipment which can meet the requirements of In-Situ sampling, transfer and incubation of sample. Built on the existed techniques, a solution to In-Situ sampling-Transfer-Incubation of deep-sea sediment samples is proposed and a suite of equipment for laboratory studies is on research and development. The equipment consists of In-Situ sampler, pressure-retaining transfer device and pressure-retaining incubation device.

Abstract:Hydrothermal vents are unique habitats like an oases of life compared with typical deep-sea, soft-sediment environments. Most animals that live in these habitats are invertebrates, and they have adapted to extreme vent environments that include high temperatures, hypoxia, high sulfide, high metal concentration, and darkness. The advent of next-generation sequencing technology, especially the coming of the new era of omics, allowed more studies to focus on the molecular adaptation of these invertebrates to vent habitats. Many genes linked to hydrothermal adaptation have been studied. We summarize the findings related to these genetic adaptations and discuss which new techniques can facilitate studies in the future.

Abstract:In this study we develop an acoustic method to measure the temperature and velocity distributions outside the hydrothermal vent in deep-ocean. The objective is to obtain the heat flux from the hydrothermal vent in a non-intrusive way. Acoustic sensors are arranged in multiple layers. On each layer, the 2-D temperature field can be obtained by a method similar to the method used in an acoustic pyrometry typically used in boiler temperature measurement. Then the sound signals are transmitted and received among sensors in different layers to get a velocity field inside the space confined by the sensor frame.

Abstract:In our continuous exploration and exploitation of the ocean, marine robots are powerful tools for accessing oceanic environments that are sometimes harsh or even too dangerous for humans. Early marine robots acted under human supervision, executing preprogrammed tasks or working under the control of highly trained specialists. In recent years, with the advancements in hardware and software, marine robots have begun to possess the capability to autonomously sense and adapt to the intricate ocean environment, thus working more efficiently and intelligently. By integrating recent advances in science and technology, ranging from biomimetic technology and new materials to advanced artificial intelligence methods, marine robots have the potential to be more powerful in the exploration of the ocean environment and facilitating a broader spectrum of tasks, such as studying marine life in their natural habitats or performing inspections and dexterous manipulation in the deep sea.

Abstract:Due to the shortage of current research methods to observe oceans in long term, real time, an innovative mechatronic system by using coaxial cable to connect a terrestrial shore station and a subsea science platform that can provide abundant power and broad bandwidth communication for subsea instruments, are developing. In this paper, an overview of this system was presented in detail from terrestrial facility to subsea infrastructure. And specially focus on introduction of constructing the platform consisted of a high direct current voltage to low levels power conversion sub-system and a control sub-system. Validation of this system was carried out in water pool involved in three subsea in-situ application instruments.
