Abstract:A strong and stable room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) signal (lambda(ex)/lambda(em) = 285/495,523 nm) can be induced for carbaryl (CBL) aqueous solution in the absence of any protective medium only using KI as a heavy atom perturber (HAP) and sodium sulfite as a deoxygenator. The analytical curve of CBL gives a linear dynamic range of 10 similar to 160 mug/L with a detection limit of 0.90 mug/L. Recoveries of 95.2% similar to 104.5% with relative standard deviations ( n = 3) of 2.3 similar to 3.8% were obtained for CBL ranging from 20 to 140 mug/L in spiked water and soil samples. It is also found that a certain amount (about 3%, V/V) of organic solvent is needed to obtain the highest RTP intensity of CBL aqueous solution, which can increase the solubility of CBL and prevent CBL from hydrolysis., The influence of I- concentration on RTP lifetime of CBL was studied in detail. The results showed that the relation between I- concentration (x, mol/L) and RTP lifetime (tau, ms) could be expressed as tau = 0.520e(-0.425x), the rate constant of phosphorescence emission k(p) from T-1-->S-o process was 1.92 ms(-1), and the heavy atom effect coefficient of KI, a, was 1.04 ms(-1).mol.L-1.
