Abstract:Demanded by modern medical diagnosis, advances in microfabrication technology have led to the development of fast, sensitive and selective electrochemical sensors for clinic analysis. This review addresses the principles behind electrochemical sensor design and fabrication, and introduces recent progress in the application of electrochemical sensors to analysis of clinical chemicals such as blood gases, electrolytes, metabolites, DNA and antibodies, including basic and applied research. Miniaturized commercial electrochemical biosensors will form the basis of inexpensive and easy to use devices for acquiring chemical information to bring sophisticated analytical capabilities to the non-specialist and general public alike in the future.

Abstract:With various microfabrication techniques have been broadly employed for electrochemical sensors, miniature sensors are rapidly advancing in electrochemical analysis. Miniature sensors allow for low-cost production in batch processes, need only a small amount of sample solution, reduce the consumption of toxic reagents, decrease the environmental pollution, enable relatively rapid, reliable and inexpensive field-analysis. Low detection limits in the parts per billion level were obtained in determination of heavy metal ions. This review describes current development of miniature electrochemical sensors and their arrays, mainly introduces the characteristics of different structure of mercury film, carbon/graphite, noble metals microsensors and several representative sensor microfabrication methods: etching, lift-off, metal-masking and screen-printing, which usually combined with each other during application. Coupled with stripping voltammetry, miniature electrochemical sensors appear very promising in biomedical, food and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:The environment is important for human survival, but because of everyday human activities, many pollutants in the drinking water, food and environment may increasingly contribute to the problem of environmental contamination and pose a significant threat to human health. Therefore, the fast and effective monitoring of environmental compound concentrations in environmental samples is required. Electrochemical sensors offer huge potential for online monitoring of specific pollutants in complex environments, owing to their high sensitivity, good selectivity, low cost, simple operation, and high accuracy. This has made them a hot topic. Furthermore, with development of portable electronic technology, the portable electrochemical sensing system with miniaturization has booming in many fields. Therefore, this paper systematically reviews a variety of portable electrochemical sensors that are used for the analysis of pollutants in the environment, and summarizes the current research direction. This is expected to provide researchers with new research ideas and perspectives.

Abstract:Electrochemical methods are increasingly favored for remediating polluted environments due to their environmental compatibility and reagent-saving features. However, a comprehensive understanding of recent progress, mechanisms, and trends in these methods is currently lacking. Web of Science (WoS) databases were utilized for searching the primary data to understand the knowledge structure and research trends of publications on electrochemical methods and to unveil certain hotspots and future trends of electrochemical methods research. The original data were sampled from 9080 publications in those databases with the search deadline of June 1st, 2022. CiteSpace and VOSviewer software facilitated data visualization and analysis of document quantities, source journals, institutions, authors, and keywords. We discussed principles, influencing factors, and progress related to seven major electrochemical methods. Notably, publications on this subject have experienced significant growth since 2007. The most frequently-investigated areas in electrochemical methods included novel materials development, heavy metal remediation, organic pollutant degradation, and removal mechanism identification. “Advanced oxidation process” and “Nanocomposite” are currently trending topics. The major remediation mechanisms are adsorption, oxidation, and reduction. The efficiency of electrochemical systems is influenced by material properties, system configuration, electron transfer efficiency, and power density. Electro-Fenton exhibits significant advantages in achieving synergistic effects of anodic oxidation and electro-adsorption among the seven techniques. Future research should prioritize the improvement of electron transfer efficiency, the optimization of electrode materials, the exploration of emerging technology coupling, and the reduction in system operation and maintenance costs.

Abstract:Electrochemical methods can enhance the rate and efficiency of environmental interface processes through the directional transfer and precise regulation of electrons. Its extraordinary characteristics and advantages can be applied in water treatment, which is an important technical means to crack water crisis and water pollution. In the past 10 years, electrochemical water treatment technology has been developed rapidly and tends towards electrode efficiency, process coupling as well as low carbon and green development. It will further focus on important directions such as functional electrode material design, high-efficiency reactor and combined process development, and directional transfer and recovery of resources and energy in the future. This review describes the current research status and practical applications of electrochemical technology in different kinds of wastewater treatment, while analyzing the basic working principles of different water treatment technologies of electrochemistry. Despite a generally environmentally friendly and efficient treatment method, electrochemistry as a water treatment technology still has certain drawbacks. This review suggests that future research should be strengthened regarding the reduction of energy consumption of the overall water treatment system, the overall system cost should be reduced based on various aspects of the application, and attempts should be made to combine the application with traditional processes.

Abstract:This article overviews the recent trends of electrochemical immunosensor. A brief description of bio-electrochemistry mechanism and application of environmental monitoring is given. Different immunoreaction formats and electron transfer mechanism (such as different mediators, direct electron transfer) have been developed to effectively convert immuno-signal and electrochemical signals. The engineering approach for these immuoelectrodes including fabrication method using IC techniques (such as screen printing), immobilization strategy and layer-by-layer structure of functional film, was recently developed in a steadily way. Labeled by electroactive material (such as enzyme, metal ion), electrochemistry sensor shows the high sensitivity (such as amperometric sensor), and is capable of real-time detecting immunoreaction(such as capacitance sensor). Based on these novel technologies, the development of electrochemical immunosensor for monitoring environmental pollutant(such as pesiticides and pathogenic microorganism) has grown steadily for high sensitivity, simplicity and low cost. This kind of sensor possess a great potential in environmental monitoring, especially field application.
Application of electrochemical DNA biosensor for the detection of environmental organic pollutants

Abstract:Electrochemical DNA biosensor is an analytical device that combines the DNA as the biological recognition element with an electrode as the electrochemical transducer to generate a measureable electrochemical signal of the DNA-target binding event,and it has been extensively applied in the field of environmental analysis due to its advantages of high sensitivity and selectivity,low cost,easy operation,portability and excellent capacity of resisting disturbance.This paper briefly introduces the working principle of the DNA biosensor and the methods for the immobilization of DNA on the electrode surface,and then highlights the applications in analyzing the environmental organic pollutants,giving prospects of the future development of the electrochemical DNA biosensor.

The electrochemical technologies have attracted a great deal of attention, because of their versatility, ease in operation, amenability to automation and their low environmental pollution. The development of electrodes and the electro - chemical technology of wastewater treatment including their research status are reviewed. Some problems that should be paid more attention and the development tendency to their future research are also pointed out.

Abstract:The advancement of energy storage technology has paved the way for the application of electrochemical processes in achieving low-carbon and precise environmental pollution reduction. Electrodes play a crucial role in efficiently removing organic pollutants and heavy metals. To implement electrochemical pollution control technology in practical engineering, flexible electrode preparation is vital. This review highlights recent progress in flexible electrode research, focusing on the selection and structural design of flexible electrode materials. It summarizes the latest advancements in current collectors, active materials, and preparation methods to enhance conductivity, flexibility, and cycle stability. The application of flexible electrodes in water pollution control is categorized into three aspects: organic pollutants, inorganic pollutants, and composite pollutants. Finally, the challenges and research requirements for enhancing electrode flexibility in environmental governance are discussed, along with prospects for their future applications.

Abstract:Screen-printed electrodes (SPEs), which are used as economical electrochemical substrates, have gone through significant improvements over the past few decades with respect to both their format and their printing materials. Because of their advantageous material properties, such as disposability, simplicity, and rapid responses, SPEs have been successfully utilised for the rapid in situ analysis of environmental pollutants. This critical review describes the basic fabrication principles, the configuration designs of SPEs and the hybrid analytical techniques based on SPEs. We mainly overview the electrochemical applications of SPEs in environmental analysis over the past 3 years, including the determination of organic compounds, heavy metals and gas pollutants.

Abstract:Electrochemical technology has a very broad range of environmental protection applications and generally aims to improve the environment in a number of ways. Environmental electrochemistry is a novel field of study which has appeared recently. Environmental electrochemistry is the use of electrochemical methods to remove poisons from industrial wastewater before its discharged into the environment. The main goal of this article is to provide a full review of the choices of electrochemistry and electrochemical technology to clean the environment. We cover industrial applications for the electrochemical removal of heavy metals from diluted solutions. A careful survey of the various electrode types and cell designs like rotating cylinder electrode cells, Swiss-roll cells, fixed packed bed cells, fluidized bed cells, and spiral wounded steel electrodes is presented. All of these cells are used to extract toxic heavy metals from industrial solutions and waste liquids. These cells' activity is governed by a number of operating factors. These operational parameters that control reactor performance and efficiency are reviewed. We cover the advantages and disadvantages of various techniques for electrochemical recovering metals and cleaning up pollution is reviewed. The use of bench scale cells from Central Metallurgical R & D institute (CMRDI) researchers in this research proves the following: Copper refiners’ solutions were reduced using packed column electrode cell, and Swiss-roll cells. Toxic chromium was electrochemically removed from electroplating and tanning solutions using rotating cylinder electrode cells. In a three-dimensional cell, the electro removal of cadmium employing a spiral wound steel electrode from solution was evaluated.

Abstract:The recent progress in electrochemiluminescent (ECL) assay is reviewed. This review begins with the fundamental researches in ECL, including the discovery of new ECL-active species, such as biochemical, organic and metallorganic materials, digital modeling of ECL process, the flow cells used in ECL assay, and electrochemiluminescent sensor. The application of ECL in environmental analysis, immunoassay, nucleotide acid hybridization sensor. The applications of ECL in environmental analysis, immunooassay, nucleic acid hybridization assay, and other aspects are reviewed with the latest references in detail. Finally, the main problems in the further investigation are outlooked, so are its prospects.

Abstract:Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) is a process in which luminescence is produced by oxidizing or reducing luminophores to transfer radiant charges between electrochemically generated free radicals. Although about 7000 electrochemiluminescence articles have been published in the past 20 years (2000-2021), only a few review articles have summarized the development and application of ECL. In order to better understand the development status, research hotspots and future development trends of ECL technology, it is very necessary to conduct a comprehensive retrospective analysis. This review is based on the bibliometric analysis method of CiteSpace software to quantitatively analyze, visually review and comment on the articles published in the field of ECL in the past 20 years. Quantitatively analyze the authors, the institutional and other basic information to understand the basic development status of ECL, and then visually analyze the high-frequency keywords, burst keywords, keyword clusters, etc., to understand each the evolution of the main research hotspots and development directions of the period, and finally a detailed review and analysis of the selected highly cited articles. We particularly emphasized the development needs of electrochemiluminescence technology in improving the performance of ECL sensors, developing materials with excellent ECL performance, innovating and cooperating with other devices, and developing high-speed and high-throughput ECL sensors. We hope to provide new ideas for promoting the industrial development and clinical application of electrochemiluminescence technology.

Abstract:The widely existed humic acid (HA) with abundant redox-active groups has been considered to play an important role in biogeochemistry in sediments and soils. Recent studies reported that HA showed great performance in terms of electron transfer capacity (up to HAEDC = 94 mmol e-/mol C, HAEAC = 42 mmol e-/mol C). Since HA is widely available, inexpensive and environmentally friendly, the electrochemistry of HA has been explored to apply in many fields, such as environmental remediation, detection sensor and energy storage. Whereas, these prospective applications of HA and their electrochemical principles were lack of a comprehensive summary. In this review, the electrochemical properties and the prospective electrochemical applications of HA were summarized. Simultaneously, the existing problems like shortages of traditional electrochemical characterization of HA, and future research directions about HA electrochemistry were prospected. This review provides a deeper understanding of HA electrochemistry, and also inspires ideas for environmental remediation, detection sensor and energy storage by exploring the potential application values of HA.
