Abstract:Silver nanocrystals with uniform sizes were synthesized in droplet microreactors through seed-mediated growth. The key to the success of this synthesis is the use of air as a carrier phase to generate the droplets. The air not only separates the reaction solution into droplets but also provides O-2 for the generation of reducing agent (glycolaldehyde). It also serves as a buffer space for the diffusion of NO, which is formed in situ due to the oxidative etching of Ag nanocrystals with twin defects. For the first time, we were able to generate Ag nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes in continuous production by using droplet microreactors. For Ag nanocubes, their edge lengths could be readily controlled in the range of 30-100 nm by varying the reaction time, the amount of seeds, and the concentration of AgNO3 in the droplets. Furthermore, we demonstrated the synthesis of Ag octahedra in the droplet microreactors. We believe that the air-driven droplet generation device can be extended to other noble metals for the production of nanocrystals with controlled sizes and shapes.

Abstract:Nanoparticles that self-assemble on a liquid-liquid interface serve as the building block for making heterodimeric nanostructures. Specifically, hollow iron oxide nanoparticles within hexane form colloidosomes in the aqueous solution of silver nitrate, and iron oxide exposed to the aqueous phase catalyzes the reduction of silver ions to afford a heterodimer of silver and hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. Transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry, X-ray diffraction, UV-vis spectroscopy, and SQUID were used to characterize the heterodimers. Interestingly, the formation of silver nanoparticles helps the removal of spinglass layer on the hollow iron oxide nanoparticles. This work demonstrates a powerful yet convenient strategy for producing sophisticated, multifunctional nanostructures.

Abstract:This paper describes a simple and convenient procedure to synthesize monodisperse silver (Ag) quasi-nanospheres with size tunable in a range of 19-140 nm through a one-step seeded growth strategy. Acetonitrile was employed as a coordinating ligand of a Ag(I) salt in order to achieve a low concentration of elemental Ag after reduction and thus suppression of new nucleation events. Since the addition of the seeds significantly accelerates the reduction reaction of Ag(I) by ascorbic acid, the reaction kinetics was further delicately balanced by tuning the reaction temperature, which proved to be critical in producing Ag quasi-nanospheres with uniform size and shape. This synthesis is highly scalable, so that it provides a simple yet very robust process for producing Ag quasi-nanospheres for many biological, analytical, and catalytic applications which often demand samples in large quantity and widely tunable particle sizes.

Abstract:A facile and novel way was reported for the preparation of nearly monodisperse silver nanoparticles with controlled hydrophilic or hydrophobic surface, using trioctylphosphine as the surfactant and stabilizer. The synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and UV–vis spectroscopy. The monodisperse silver nanoparticles showed a strong surface plasmon resonance band at 402nm from the UV–vis spectrum.

Abstract:Spherical silver and gold nanoparticles with narrow size distributions were conveniently synthesized in aqueous solution by a novel electrochemical method. The technological keys to the electrochemical synthesis of monodispersed metallic nanoparticles lie in the choice of an ideal stabilizer for the metallic nanoclusters and the use of a rotating platinum cathode. Poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) was chosen as the stabilizer for the silver and gold clusters. PVP not only protects metallic particles from agglomeration, but also promotes metal nucleation, which tends to produce small metal particles. Using a rotating platinum cathode effectively solves the technological difficulty of rapidly transferring the (electrochemically synthesized) metallic nanoparticles from the cathode vicinity to the bulk solution, avoiding the occurrence of flocculates in the vicinity of the cathode, and ensuring the monodispersity of the particles. The particle size and particle size distribution of the silver and gold nanoparticles were improved by adding sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) to the electrolyte. The electrochemically synthesized nanoparticles were characterized by TEM and UV/Vis spectroscopy.

Abstract:Silver (Ag) nanoparticles decorated Zinc oxide (A-ZnO) nanowires have been successfully synthesized by two-step chemical vapour deposition and magnetron sputtering method. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed their hexagonal wurtzite structure. SEM images indicated the Ag nanoparticles are distributed uniformly on the surface of A-ZnO nanowires. By extending the sputtering time, the atomic percent of Ag increased gradually. Moreover, the photoluminescence results demonstrated two major emission peaks for the A-ZnO nanowires. Where, the visible emission peaks were stronger than those of unmodified ZnO nanowires. These studies promise their potential applications in multifunctional optical devices.

Abstract:Ultrathin nanozeolite films were prepared on the surface of Pt and glass carbon electrodes using nanoscale zeolite particles as building block via a layer-by-layer (LbL) technique or by a secondary growth method. Compared to conventional zeolite-modified electrodes, the nanozeolite film modified ones (nanoZMEs) prepared by these methods exhibit good membrane morphologies with controllable thickness in nanometer scale and large zeolite/electrode contact areas due to the nanoscale zeolite film attached directly to the electrode. Ag+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ were selected as examples to evaluate the electrochemical performance of nanoZMEs with designed thickness. With the same thickness of zeolite layer, nanoZMEs prepared by the LbL technique possess short preconcentration and response time, while nanoZMEs fabricated through the secondary growth method exhibit high accumulation ability and ion exchange selectivity. It is found that besides the inherent ion exchange selectivity of the zeolite layer, the transport rate of ions in the zeolite layer toward the electrode surface is an important factor that affected the electrochemical selectivity of the ZMEs.

Abstract:A simple one-step reduction method was explored to synthesize silver particles of different size. During synthesis, Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and CH2O were used as the protective agent and the reducing agent, respectively. It is found that the reaction parameters including the concentration of PVP and AgNO3, the amount of ammonia and the reaction temperature has great influence on the size and uniformity of silver particles. By careful tuning the reaction parameters, mono-disperse silver particles with the size of 40–2000 nm can be obtained controllably. It is considered that there were two growth modes: diffusional growth and aggregation.

Abstract:A novel in situ autoreduction route has been developed, by which monodispersed silver nanoparticles with tunable sizes could be easily fabricated on silica-based materials, especially inside the channels of mesoporous silica (MPS). 13C CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy was employed to monitor the whole assembly process. It was demonstrated that the amino groups of APTS (aminopropyltriethoxyl silane)-modified MPS can be used to anchor formaldehyde to form novel reducing species (NHCH2OH), on which Ag(NH3)2NO3 could be in situ reduced. Monodispersed silver nanoparticles were thus obtained. In situ XRD and in situ TEM experiments were used to investigate and compare the thermal stabilities of silver nanoparticles on the external surface of silica gels (unconfined) and those located inside the channels of SBA-15 (confined). It was observed that unconfined silver nanoparticles tended to agglomerate at low temperatures (i.e., lower than 773 K). The aggregation of silver nanoparticles became more serious at 773 K. However, for those confined silver nanoparticles, no coarsening process was observed at 773 K, much higher than its Tammann temperature (i.e., 617 K). Only when the treating temperature was higher than 873 K could the agglomeration of those confined silver nanoparticles happen with time-varying via the Ostwald ripening process. The confinement of mesopores played a key role in improving the thermal stabilities of silver nanoparticles (stable up to 773 K without any observable coarsening), which is essential to the further investigations on their chemical (e.g., catalytic) properties.

Abstract:<p>Small size and narrow distribution are the key factors to improve performances of metal nanocrystals due to nanosize effect. Here, a silver‐alkylamine complex–mediated single micelle, a one‐pot approach, for controlled synthesis of monodisperse silver nanocrystals, in which oleylamine molecules play key roles serving both as complex agent and as micellar coalescence blocker is reported. After the synthesis, monodisperse products can be directly collected through subsequent single‐step separation as the particle size is finely adjusted during the synthesis. Dual‐soluble silver oleylamine complex is prepared through liquid phase complexing and is used as oil‐soluble precursor in single reverse micelle. The as‐synthesized silver nanocrystals are very uniform with a controlled size of 6.00 ± 0.29 or 8.0 ± 0.40 nm and a narrow size distribution with a standard deviation (σ) of ≈5.0%. The protocol offers a general platform for fast synthesis of noble metal nanocrystals with rationally designed size and structure.</p>

Abstract:This paper reviews the synthesis of nanosized silicalite-1,ZSM-5,TS-1,beta,A and Y zeolite.Low-temperature hydrothermal crystallization is the ideal approach for obtaining discrete zeolite colloids with crystal size of less than 100 nm.Other methods,such as confined-space crystallization,peso-solid phase crystallization etc.are also possible for obtaining zeolites with nanosized particles.Dispersed nanosized zeolites have typical colloidal properties such as high external surface area,abundant surface hydroxyl and self-aggregation properties.Zeta potential of colloidal zeolites changes with pH,zeolite composition,crystal size,and structures.The nanozeolites possessed some unique physico-chemical properties which are different from those of the large crystal zeolites.With high dispersibility and abundant surface hydroxyls,nanozeolites are perfect building blocks in nano-assembly technology.Using the assembly properties of nanozeolites,various hierarchical structured zeolite materials have been successfully fabricated.In some of the applications in catalyst field,nanosized zeolites also have the merits of high activity,long lifetime and special selectivity.

Abstract:Nanosized zeolites with larger external surface area and decreased diffusion pathway provide many potential opportunities in adsorption, diffusion, and catalytic applications. Herein, we report a designer synthesis of ultra-fine Fe-LTL zeolite nanocrystals under very mild synthesis conditions. We prepared Fe-LTL zeolite nanocrystals synthesized using L precursor. The precursor is aging at room temperature to obtain zeolite L nuclei. In order to investigate more details of Fe-LTL zeolite nanocrystals, various characterizations including X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP), diffuse reflectance ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, confirm the tetrahedral Fe3+ species in the zeolite framework. Besides, scanning electron microscope (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), dynamic light scattering (DLS) indicate that the average particle size of Fe-LTL zeolite crystals is approximately 30 nm. Thus, ultra-fine Fe-LTL zeolite with large external surface area and shorter diffusion pathway to the active sites might have great potential in the near future.

Abstract:Silver-modified ZnO nanorods array has been prepared and the effect of silver modification has been studied. ZnO nanorods array were fabricated through a wet chemical route and a photo deposition method was taken to fabricate silver nano particulate on the ZnO nanorods. The structural and optical properties were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope, high resolution transmission electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman, UV–vis and photoluminescence (PL) spectra. The UV photocatalytic activity of these materials was studied by analyzing the degradation of methylene blue (MB) in aqueous solution. The photocatalytic performance indicated that Ag deposit acted as not only electron sinks to enhance the separation of photoexcited electrons from holes, but also charge carrier recombination centers, so the optimized amount of Ag deposit was investigated.

Abstract:Silver colloidal nanoparticles were synthesized via an analogous silver mirror reaction process without the traditional Tollens reagent. Instead of ammonia, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) was employed to coordinate with Ag+. The silver nanoparticles and reaction process were characterized by UV–vis spectrometer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results showed that the silver concentration in the colloid reached 0.05mol/l and the colloid could keep stable for over 45 days. The halogen in CTAB is used as surfactant counterion to form a CTABr−Ag+ complex, which can be reduced by glucose to Ag nanoparticles. Besides, the apparent impact on the dispersion and shape of silver nanoparticles induced by the molar ratio of CTAB to Ag is also discussed.

Abstract:A facile and "green" method was proposed to introduce Ag nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the hierarchically monolithic silica uniformly in the presence of (3-aminopropyl)-triethoxysilane (APTES) and ethylene glycol. APTES is used to modify the monolith by incorporating amino groups onto the surface of meso-macroporous skeletons, while ethylene glycol is employed as the productive reductant. Ag NPs are homogeneously immobilized in hierarchically monolithic silica after reduction and drying at 40 degrees C for different duration times, and the embedded amount of Ag NPs can reach 15.44 wt% when treated once. The embedment of Ag NPs increases with the repeat treatment and the APTES amount, without uncontrollable crystalline growth. The surface areas of Ag NPs embedded in silica monoliths after heat treatment at 300 and 400 degrees C are higher than those before heat treatment. The modification via APTES and the embedment of Ag NPs does not spoil the morphology of monolithic silica, while changing the pore structures of the monolith. A tentative formation process and a reduction mechanism are proposed for the modification, reduction and embedment. Ag NPs embedded in monolithic silica is promising for wide applications such as catalysis and separation.
