Abstract:In this first paper we present a central relaxing scheme for scalar conservation laws, based on using the local relaxation approximation. Our scheme is obtained without using Linear or nonlinear Riemann solvers. A cell entropy inequality is studied for the semidiscrete central relaxing scheme, and a second order MUSCL scheme is shown to be TVD in the zero relaxation limit. The next paper will extend the central relaxing scheme to multi-dimensional systems of conservation laws in curvilinear coordinates, including numerical experiments for 1D and 2D problems.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to study nonlinear stability of the relaxing schemes approximating nonconvex scalar conservation laws, constructed by Jin and Xin [4]. We will establish the maximum principle for a first-order and a second-order relaxing schemes presented in [4], if the initial layer is not introduced. Optimal bounds on the total variation and L1-boundedness for the above schemes will also be obtained. Specifically, the conserved physical quantity in the relaxing schemes is TVD. The Lipschitz constant of the L1 continuity in time is shown to be independent of the relaxation parameter ε and the time size k. These imply convergence of the above relaxing schemes.

Abstract:This paper deals with the diffusive limit of the Jin and Xin model and its approximation by an asymptotic preserving finite volume scheme. At the continuous level, we determine a convergence rate to the diffusive limit by means of a relative entropy method. Considering a semi-discrete approximation (discrete in space and continuous in time), we adapt the method to this semi-discrete framework and establish that the approximated solutions converge towards the discrete convection-diffusion limit with the same convergence rate.

Abstract:In this paper, fully discrete entropy conditions of a class of high resolution schemes with the MmB property are discussed by using the theory of proper discrete entropy flux for the linear scalar conservation laws in two dimensions. The theoretical resluts show that the high resolution schemes satisfying fully discrete entropy conditions with proper discrete entropy flux cannot preserve second order accuracy in the case of two dimensions.

Abstract:This paper continues to study the central relaxing schemes for system of hyperbolic conservation laws, based on the local relaxation approximation. Two classes of relaxing systems with stiff source term are introduced to approximate system of conservation laws in curvilinear coordinates. Based on them, the semi-implicit relaxing schemes are constructed as in [6, 12] without using any linear or nonlinear Riemann solvers. Numerical experiments for one-dimensional and two-dimensional problems are presented to demonstrate the performance and resolution of the current schemes.

Abstract:Subcell limiting strategies for discontinuous Galerkin spectral element methods do not provably satisfy a semi-discrete cell entropy inequality. In this work, we introduce an extension to the subcell and monolithic convex limiting strategies that satisfies the semi-discrete cell entropy inequality by formulating the limiting factors as solutions to an optimization problem. The optimization problem is efficiently solved using a deterministic greedy algorithm. We also discuss the extension of the proposed subcell limiting strategy to preserve general convex constraints. Numerical experiments confirm that the proposed limiting strategy preserves high-order accuracy for smooth solutions and satisfies the cell entropy inequality.

Relaxation schemes for entropy dissipative system of viscous conservation laws

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a hyperbolic model for entropy dissipative system of viscous conservation laws via a flux relaxation approach. We develop numerical schemes for the resulting hyperbolic relaxation system by employing the finite-volume methodology used in the community of hyperbolic conservation laws, e.g., the generalized Riemann problem method. For fully discrete schemes for the relaxation system of scalar viscous conservation laws, we show the asymptotic preserving property in the coarse regime without resolving the relaxation scale and prove the dissipation property by using the modified equation approach. Further, we extend the idea to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations. Finally, we display the performance of our relaxation schemes by a number of numerical experiments.

Abstract:This paper develops the high-order accurate entropy stable finite difference schemes for one- and two-dimensional special relativistic hydrodynamic equations. The schemes are built on the entropy conservative flux and the weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) technique as well as explicit Runge-Kutta time discretization. The key is to technically construct the affordable entropy conservative flux of the semi-discrete second-order accurate entropy conservative schemes satisfying the semi-discrete entropy equality for the found convex entropy pair. As soon as the entropy conservative flux is derived, the dissipation term can be added to give the semi-discrete entropy stable schemes satisfying the semi-discrete entropy inequality with the given convex entropy function. The WENO reconstruction for the scaled entropy variables and the high-order explicit Runge-Kutta time discretization are implemented to obtain the fully-discrete high-order schemes. Several numerical tests are conducted to validate the accuracy and the ability to capture discontinuities of our entropy stable schemes.

Abstract:Using the error bound results established in the present paper for approximate solutions, we study the stability issues when perturbed by possibly nonaffine smooth maps E for the abstract inequality system F >=(K) 0 defined by a (possible nonclosed) convex cone K and a Frechet differentiable function F satisfying the (extended) weak gamma-condition. We provide some sufficient conditions, in terms of the information at a solution x(0), for ensuring the lower semicontinuity and/or the Lipschitz-like continuity at x(0) of the solution mapping for the perturbed system F + E >=(K) 0 with smooth perturbation E. Explicit upper bounds of the Lipschitz-like moduli are also provided.

Abstract:In this paper we analyse a finite volume scheme for a nonlocal version of the Shigesada-Kawazaki-Teramoto (SKT) cross-diffusion system. We prove the existence of solutions to the scheme, derive qualitative properties of the solutions and prove its convergence. The proofs rely on a discrete entropy-dissipation inequality, discrete compactness arguments, and on the novel adaptation of the so-called duality method at the discrete level. Finally, thanks to numerical experiments, we investigate the influence of the nonlocality in the system: on convergence properties of the scheme, as an approximation of the local system and on the development of diffusive instabilities.

High order entropy stable schemes for the quasi-one-dimensional shallow water and compressible Euler equations

Abstract:High order schemes are known to be unstable in the presence of shock discontinuities or under-resolved solution features for nonlinear conservation laws. Entropy stable schemes address this instability by ensuring that physically relevant solutions satisfy a semi-discrete entropy inequality independently of discretization parameters. This work extends high order entropy stable schemes to the quasi-1D shallow water equations and the quasi-1D compressible Euler equations, which model one-dimensional flows through channels or nozzles with varying width. We introduce new non-symmetric entropy conservative finite volume fluxes for both sets of quasi-1D equations, as well as a generalization of the entropy conservation condition to non-symmetric fluxes. When combined with an entropy stable interface flux, the resulting schemes are high order accurate, conservative, and semi-discretely entropy stable. For the quasi-1D shallow water equations, the resulting schemes are also well-balanced.

Abstract:The algebraic flux correction (AFC) schemes presented in this work constrain a standard continuous finite element discretization of a nonlinear hyperbolic problem to satisfy relevant maximum principles and entropy stability conditions. The desired properties are enforced by applying a limiter to antidiffusive fluxes that represent the difference between the high-order baseline scheme and a property-preserving approximation of Lax--Friedrichs type. In the first step of the limiting procedure, the given target fluxes are adjusted in a way that guarantees preservation of local and/or global bounds. In the second step, additional limiting is performed, if necessary,to ensure the validity of fully discrete and/or semi-discrete entropy inequalities. The limiter-based entropy fixes considered in this work are applicable to finite element discretizations of scalar hyperbolic equations and systems alike. The underlying inequality constraints are formulated using Tadmor's entropy stability theory. The proposed limiters impose entropy-conservative or entropy-dissipative bounds on the rate of entropy production by antidiffusive fluxes and Runge--Kutta (RK) time discretizations. Two versions of the fully discrete entropy fix are developed for this purpose. To motivate the use of limiter-based entropy fixes, we prove a finite element version of the Lax--Wendroff theorem and perform numerical studies for standard test problems. In our numerical experiments, entropy-dissipative schemes converge to correct weak solutions of scalar conservation laws, of the Euler equations, and of the shallow water equations.

A New Formula for Entropy Solutions for Scalar Hyperbolic Conservation Laws: Convexity Degeneracy of Flux Functions and Fine Properties of Solutions

Abstract:We are concerned with the Cauchy problem for one-dimensional scalar hyperbolic conservation laws, wherein the flux functions exhibit convexity degeneracy and the initial data are in $L^\infty$. Our primary aim of this paper is to introduce and validate a novel formula for entropy solutions for this Cauchy problem, specifically tailored to the flux functions satisfying (1.3) which allow the state points of convexity degeneracy and asymptotic lines. This formulation serves as a generalization of the Lax--Oleinik formula that necessitates the flux function to possess uniform convexity. Furthermore, we explore several key applications of this new formula to analyze fine properties of entropy solutions for the Cauchy problem with flux functions allowing for convexity degeneracy and initial data only in $L^\infty$; these especially include: (i) Fine structures of entropy solutions, (ii) Global dynamic patterns of entropy solutions, and (iii) Asymptotic profiles of entropy solutions for initial data in $L^\infty$ in both the $L^\infty$-norm and the $L^p_{\rm loc}$-norm. Through these analyses, we provide a comprehensive understanding of entropy solutions for scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with the flux functions satisfying (1.3) allowing the state points of convexity degeneracy and asymptotic lines. Moreover, the new solution formula is extended to more general scalar hyperbolic conservation laws with initial data in $L^1_{\rm loc}$.

Entropy Satisfying Schemes for Computing Selection Dynamics in Competitive Interactions

Abstract:In this paper, we present entropy satisfying schemes for solving an integro-differential equation that describes the evolution of a population structured with respect to a continuous trait. In [P.-E. Jabin and G. Raoul, J. Math. Biol., 63 (2011), pp. 493--517] solutions are shown to converge toward the so-called evolutionary stable distribution (ESD) as time becomes large, using the relative entropy. At the discrete level, the ESD is shown to be the solution to a quadratic programming problem and can be computed by any well-established nonlinear programing algorithm. The schemes are then shown to satisfy the entropy dissipation inequality on the set where initial data are positive and the numerical solutions tend toward the discrete ESD in time. An alternative algorithm is presented to capture the global ESD for nonnegative initial data, which is made possible due to the mutation mechanism built into the modified scheme. A series of numerical tests are given to confirm both accuracy and the entropy satisfying property and to underline the efficiency of capturing the large time asymptotic behavior of numerical solutions in various settings.

Abstract:Following the solution formula method given in Dong et al. (High order discontinuities decomposition entropy condition schemes for Euler equations. CFD J. 2002;10(4): 448–457), this article studies a type of one‐step fully‐discrete scheme, and constructs a third‐order scheme which is written into a compact form via a new limiter. The highlights of this study and advantages of new third‐order scheme are as follows: 1 We proposed a very simple new methodology of constructing one‐step, consistent high‐order and non‐oscillation schemes that do not rely on Runge–Kutta method; 2 We systematically studied new scheme's theoretical problems about entropy conditions, error analysis, and non‐oscillation conditions; 3 The new scheme achieves exact solution in linear cases and performing better in nonlinear cases when CFL → 1; 4 The new scheme is third order but high resolution with excellent shock‐capturing capacity which is comparable to fifth order WENO scheme; 5 CPU time of new scheme is only a quarter of WENO5 + RK3 under same computing condition; 6 For engineering applications, the new scheme is extended to multi‐dimensional Euler equations under curvilinear coordinates. Numerical experiments contain 1D scalar equation, 1D,2D,3D Euler equations. Accuracy tests are carried out using 1D linear scalar equation, 1D Burgers equation and 2D Euler equations and two sonic point tests are carried out to show the effect of entropy condition linearization. All tests are compared with results of WENO5 and finally indicate EC3 is cheaper in computational expense.

Abstract:We prove the stability of entropy solutions of nonlinear conservation laws with respect to perturbations of the initial datum, the space-time dependent flux and the entropy inequalities. Such a general stability theorem is motivated by the study of problems in which the flux P [ u ]( t , x , u ) depends possibly non-locally on the solution itself. For these problems we show the conditional existence and uniqueness of entropy solutions. Moreover, the relaxation of the entropy inequality allows to treat approximate solutions arising from various numerical schemes. This can be used to derive the rate of convergence of the recent particle method introduced in Radici and Stra (SIAM J Math Anal 55(3):2001–2041, 2023. https://doi.org/10.1137/21M1462994) to solve a one-dimensional model of traffic with congestion, as well as recover already known rates for some other approximation methods.

Abstract:Hamilton-Jacobi equation appears frequently in applications, e.g., in differential games and control theory, and is closely related to hyperbolic conservation laws[3, 4, 12]. This is helpful in the design of difference approximations for Hamilton-Jacobi equation and hyperbolic conservation laws. In this paper we present the relaxing system for Hamilton-Jacobi equations in arbitrary space dimensions, and high resolution relaxing schemes for Hamilton-Jacobi equation, based on using the local relaxation approximation. The schemes are numerically tested on a variety of 1D and 2D problems, including a problem related to optimal control problem. High-order accuracy in smooth regions, good resolution of discontinuities, and convergence to viscosity solutions are observed.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the topological entropy of shrinking target problem in nonautonomous dynamical systems (NDSs). After providing the shrinking target problem of the topological version in NDSs, we obtain a general formula for computing the topological entropy of it. More precisely, we show that the entropy distribution principle still holds in NDSs and apply it to estimate the lower bound of the formula. In addition to the specification property, the concept of control non-decreasing property about the Bowen metric proposed by us is taken as a supplementary condition. Furthermore, we get the connection about the topological entropy between the shrinking target problem and the whole system. This extends the result of Ma et al. [Discrete Contin. Dyn. Syst. 39(5) (2019), pp. 2455–2471], corresponding to the case when the maps are the same as the more general case of different maps.
