Abstract:Long-term electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring requires high-ratio lossless compression techniques to reduce data transmission energy and data storage capacity. In this paper, we have proposed a high-ratio ECG compression system with low computational complexity. Firstly, as the morphologies of the ECG change over time, we divide the signal of each heartbeat cycle into two regions. To achieve high prediction accuracy, a 1st order linear predictor and a combination of the template predictor and 3rd order linear predictor are applied in the two regions respectively. Secondly, we introduce a context-based error modeling module to the system, which cancels the statistical bias of the prediction algorithm and further improves the prediction accuracy. Thirdly, we modify the Golomb-Rice encoding algorithm to adaptively encode the prediction errors, while preserving a code space for packaging the information that is necessary for prediction. We evaluate the proposed system by using the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database (ARRDB). The experimental results show that with memory requirements as low as 444 to 14556 total variables this system achieves a compression ratio (CR) from 2.975 to 3.040, suggesting that it is highly applicable to both the low-power design and the cloud.

Abstract:A lossless data compression algorithm was presented based on filter banks with integer to integer mapping. The coding strategy stressed on both the space and the speed. It could be used for ECG lossless compression. The algorithm was tested with MIT-BIH arrhythmia database (sample rate 360Hz) and produced an average lossless compression ratio 2.52 and an average decoding time 1.375. This algorithm could be used to develop a new Holter with high performance.

Abstract:After a study on the characteristic of ECG data, we propose here in this paper a lossless compression method of ECG data, which is based on JPEG2000. It integrates both 1D and 2D compression. The method has been verified through all forty-eight records in MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database. And the result shows that the method has a better compression rate and a good computational efficiency.

Abstract:Now researches of ECG data compression mainly focus on compressing the ECG data of low sampling rate. A BW-based high sampling rate ECG data lossless compression algorithm is proposed in this paper. We apply difference operation to the original ECG data first and take part of the 16-bit binary differential value as 8-bit binary. Then the differential results are coded with the move-to-front coding method in order to make the same characters centralizing in a certain area. Last, we gain a high compression ratio by using the arithmetic coding method further. Our experimental results indicate that this is an efficient lossless compression method suitable for body surface ECG data as well as for heart ECG data. The average compression ratios come up to 3.547 and 3.608, respectively. By comparison with current ECG compression algorithms, our algorithm has gained much improvement in terms of the compression ratio, especially when applied to the high sampling rate ECG data.

Abstract:A multiple compression method for ECG signal is proposed. With this method, beat templates were taken from original signals according to the features of ECG. The signal was divided into three parts: beat template, residual and position parameter. The residuals were first compressed with LADT, and then with the lossless Huffman encoder in order to maintain a low level of reconstructed waveform distortion. At the least loss of useful information, high compression ratio was achieved by this method.

Abstract:This work presents an electrocardiogram (ECG) compression processor for wireless sensors with configurable data lossless and lossy compression. Lifting wavelet transforms of 9/7-M and 5/3 are employed for signal decomposition instead of traditional wavelet. A hybrid encoding scheme improves compression efficiency by encoding the higher scales of decomposed coefficients with modified embedded zero-tree wavelet (EZW) and the lowest scale with Huffman encoding. Besides, a transposable register matrix for coefficients buffering during EZW encoding lowers the processing frequency without extra register resource. Implemented in SMIC 40nm CMOS process, the processor only takes a total gate count of 10.8K with 92nW power consumption under 0.5V voltage and achieves a compression ratio of 2.71 for lossless compression and 14.9 for lossy compression with PRD of 0.39%.

Abstract:A new electrocardiogram(ECG) data compression method is presented.It employs a repeated coding.In this method beat templates are extracted from original signals according to the features of ECG.The data are divided into three parts:beat template,residual and position parameter.The three separate parts are first encoded with LADT,and then use the lossless entropy encoding to maintain a low level of reconstructed waveform distortion.The entropy encoding based on Huffman encoding is employed here as an example.Selections from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database,show that there is substantial improvement in compression ratio (CR) over other single and simple compression methods for comparable percent root-mean-square difference(PRD).

Abstract:A new electrocardiogram (ECG) compression method based on the combination of the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and the wavelet transform is presented. ECG signal can be decomposed into a set of intrinsic mode functions by the EMD. The proposed method recomposes the intrinsic mode functions into two groups, and compresses each group separately to fully utilise their data characteristics. The first group can be completely described by its extrema with negligible reconstruction error, while the second group is further decomposed by wavelet transform. With appropriate threshold selecting and the using of the run length coding and the Huffman coding, the proposed method exhibits competitive performances compared with other compressors for ECG compression.

Abstract:This work presents a low-complexity lossless electrocardiogram (ECG) compression ASIC for wireless sensors. Three linear predictors aiming for different signal characteristics are provided for prediction based on a history table that records of the optimum predictors for recent samples. And unlike traditional methods using a unified encoder, the prediction error is encoded by a hybrid Golomb encoder combining Exp-Golomb and Golomb-Rice and can adaptively configure the encoding scheme according to the predictor selection. The novel adaptive prediction and encoding scheme contributes to a compression rate of 2.77 for the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia database. Implemented in 40nm CMOS process, the design takes a small gate count of 1.82K with 37.6nW power consumption under 0.9V supply voltage.

Abstract:Due to the regularity of activity of the heart and similarity among each period of ECG signal, there is high correlation between DCT coefficients of every two frames of ECG data. Using this characteristic, we present a compression method for ECG data in this paper, by which we can get a higher compression ratio(CR) than the compression method just via DCT does.

Abstract:Objective To develop a lossless compression algorithm applied on the MCU.Methods Direct difference data compression and 2-4-8 three-word-length coding data compression based on the first order difference were developed.Statistics on the results of the first order difference of ECG data in the MIT_BIH ECG database resulted in an optimal three-word-length code table.Results Direct difference data compression ratio was lower than 2,and three-word-length data compression ratio was around 3.Conclusion There are both advantages and disadvantages in two types of lossless data compression,but three-word-length data compression is superior to direct difference data compression.[Chinese Medical Equipment Journal,2008,29(2):24-27]

Abstract:A lossy-to-lossless compression framework for electrocardiogram (ECG) signals is proposed for wearable monitoring devices. In this framework, the tail bits of the coefficients generated by the lifting discrete wavelet transform of the ECG sequences are truncated at different levels configured according to the tolerance of the information loss, while no truncation for lossless compression. These processed coefficients are then encoded with the modified run length code. The algorithm is evaluated by the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, where the experimental results show that the proposed framework achieves a better comprehensive performance than existing state-of-the-art lossy-to-lossless compression approaches. The authors further demonstrate a three-stage pipeline very large scale integration (VLSI) implementation of the compression framework, which can be used as an intellectual property core with a core area of 0.4 mm(2) and achieves power consumption of 1.524 mu W at 360 Hz in a 0.18 mu m CMOS technology.
The Compression Algorithm for Electrocardiogram Based on Sparse Decomposition

Abstract:Sparse decompression is a new theory for signal processing,having the advantage in that the base(dictionary) used in this theory is over-complete,and can reflect the nature of signal.So the sparse decompression of signal can get sparse representation,which is very important in data compression.The algorithm of compression based on sparse decompression is investigated.By training and learning the ECG data in MIT-BIH database,we constructed the over-complete dictionary of ECG..The atoms in this dictionary accorded with the character of ECG,thus it was possible that a long ECG datum was reconstructed by a few nonzero coefficients and atoms.The proposed compression algorithm could adjust compression ratio according to practical request,and the distortion was low(when the compression ratio was 20:1,the standard error is 5.11%).The experiments have proved the feasibility of the proposed compression algorithm.

Abstract:The improved algorithm designed for the compression of ambulatory ECG data is described. This method is based on the principal component analysis and neural network. More over, ECG signal reconstruction can be achieved by principal component analysis. The algorithm records original ECG data as principal component parameters and it has higher compression ratio. When using 5 principal components to record the feature of ECG data,it also can achieve the compressing result as: PRQ 4%, CR 17∶1. The experiment results of data compression/reconstruction are referred and analyzed. From the study, the conclusion can be obtained that the compression algorithm can provide superior performance.

Abstract:A real-time lossless compression technique for ECG signals, which benefits wearable medical devices with stringent low-power requirements, is presented. The real-time ECG waveform is automatically classified into four regions according to its fluctuation features and the most suitable prediction method is adaptively selected from several linear prediction methods for different regions. Further proposed is the use of a modified variable length code to encode the prediction difference for a simpler transmit format. Experimental results based on three publically available test databases show that the proposed method achieves a better compression ratio with a lower prediction difference than existing state-of-the-art approaches. A very large-scale integration implementation is also demonstrated which can be used as an intellectual property core with a core area of 25 809 mu m(2) and which achieves a power consumption of 127 mu W at 100 MHz in a 0.18 mu m CMOS technology.
A Novel Ecg Data Compression Method Based On Adaptive Fourier Decomposition

Abstract:This paper presents a novel electrocardiogram (ECG) compression method based on adaptive Fourier decomposition (AFD). AFD is a newly developed signal decomposition approach, which can decompose a signal with fast convergence, and hence reconstruct ECG signals with high fidelity. Unlike most of the high performance algorithms, our method does not make use of any preprocessing operation before compression. Huffman coding is employed for further compression. Validated with 48 ECG recordings of MIT-BIH arrhythmia database, the proposed method achieves the compression ratio (CR) of 35.53 and the percentage root mean square difference (PRD) of 1.47% on average with N = 8 decomposition times and a robust PRD-CR relationship. The results demonstrate that the proposed method has a good performance compared with the state-of-the-art ECG compressors.

Abstract:A new empirical mode decomposition (EMD)-based electrocardiograph (ECG) compressor is presented. Utilising the sifting process in EMD, the spline fitting function of the successive mean extrema together with the first intrinsic mode functions can perfectly reconstruct the ECG signal, the proposed method using the mean extrema for the compression. With optimal selection of the mean extrema and dead zone quantisation, and the application of run length coding and Huffman coding for further compression, the experimental results regarding several records of the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database shows that the proposed methods have a better compression results than recently developed ECG compressors.

Abstract:Data compression algorithm is an effective tool to reduce the storage requirements and improve the transmission efficiency in wearable ECG monitoring system. Therefore, an efficient ECG data compression scheme which based on discrete wavelet transform (DWT) and variable-length run-length encoding was presented in this paper. DWT is utilized to compute the transform coefficients of the original data. Then using the dead-zone quantization method to quantize wavelet coefficients, and the threshold is determined according to the energy packing efficiency (EPE). Coefficients below the threshold are removed directly, while other wavelet coefficients are kept at the preset quantization level. Further, using the variable-length run-length encoding algorithm to encode the quantized coefficients. The performance of the compression method was evaluated by compressing the ECG records from the MIT-BIH arrhythmia database. The average values of compression ratio (CR), quality score (QS), quality score 1 (QS1), quality score normalized (QSN), percent root mean square difference (PRD), percent root mean square difference 1 (PRD1), percent root mean square difference normalized (PRDN) and signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the proposed method are 20.48, 47.13, 4.85, 3.12, 0.47, 4.16, 6.86 and 24.12 dB respectively. Compared with other ECG compression schemes, the results show that this scheme has better performance.

Abstract:Electrocardiogram (ECG) data analysis is of great significance to the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. ECG compression should be processed in real time, and the data should be based on lossless compression and have high predictability. In terms of the real time aspect, short-time Fourier transformation is applied to the processing of signal wave for reducing computational time. For the lossless compression requirement, wavelet-transformation that is a coding algorithm can be used to avoid loss of data. In practice, compression is required to avoid storing redundant recording data that are not useful in the diagnosis platform. The obtained data can be preprocessed to remove noise by using wavelet transform, and then a multi-objective optimize neural network model is used to extract feature information. Compared with the existing traditional methods such as direct data processing method and transform method, our proposed compression model has self-learning ability to achieve high data compression ratio at 1:19 without losing important ECG information and compromising quality. Upon testing, we demonstrated that the proposed ECG data compression method based on multi-objective optimization neural network is effective and efficient in clinical practice.

Abstract:In order to store and transmit electrocardiogram (ECG), an integer wavelet based on lifting scheme composed of embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coding is proposed in this paper. The EZW has achieved notable success in image coding. We modified the algorithm for the one-dimensional case and applied it to compression of ECG data. In order to reduce the complexity of the algorithm, we used the integer wavelet to replace the original wavelet. Experiments on selected records from MIT-BIH arrhythmia database revealed that the proposed code is significantly more efficient in compression, when compared with other methods. The algorithm exhibits the virtue of simplicity, fastness variant bit rate, space saving and relatively low computation complexity, etc. which makes it especially fit for the embedded system with critical memory space and power consumption.
