Abstract:Effect of depth of grain bed, velocity of airflow, and cycle of airflow reversals on the moisture uniformity, drying rate and heat consumption of the paddy drying technology were studied. The results show that the moisture uniformity is mainly affected by airflow rate. An increase in airflow rate enhances moisture uniformity throughout the grain bed. The optimum drying parameters of the technology were obtained.
Experimental Performance Analysis of a Pilot-Scale Biomass-Assisted Recirculating Mixed-Flow Dryer for Drying Paddy

Abstract:A large amount of heat energy is required for paddy drying processes to evaporate water from paddy grains. Currently, fossil fuels are being used as an energy source to heat air during the drying process. However, fossil fuels cause air pollution, climate change, and disruption of ecological balance. In this study, to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels for paddy drying, a pilot-scale biomass-assisted recirculating mixed-flow drying system (PSBA-RMFD) for drying paddy was designed, installed, and tested. In this PSBA-RMFD, the heat energy required for heating the drying air was provided only by biomass. The PSBA-RMFD comprises a biomass furnace, drying column, vibratory feeder, bucket elevator, and blower. This study is aimed at evaluating the performance of the PSBA-RMFD with a drying capacity of 400 kg/h. The performance metrics of the PSBA-RMFD were specific energy consumption (SEC), specific thermal energy consumption (STEC), specific moisture evaporation rate (SMER), thermal efficiency of the PSBA-RMFD, exergy efficiency of the drying section, and improvement potential of the dryer. From the experiments conducted in this study, the values of the aforementioned performance parameters were as follows: 0.806-8.656 kW h/kg of water evaporated; 0.385-4.136 kW h/kg of water evaporated; 0.122-1.308 kg of water evaporated/kW h; 7.82-83.99%; 15.28-25.64%; and 858.90-1355.62 W, respectively. The paddy moisture content was reduced from 20.90% wet basis (initial weight of 400 kg) to 13.30% wet basis (final weight of 364 kg) in 270 min, with an average temperature of 78.15°C and average relative humidity of 8.55%. The percentage of biomass energy used in the drying system was approximately 47.77% of the overall energy. In addition, the payback period of the PSBA-RMFD was 1.9 years.

Abstract:In underdeveloped nations, rice is frequently harvested at a relatively high moisture content and then dried under the open sun to a storage moisture content. However, direct UV exposure, rain, dust, premature drying, contamination, and open sun drying are all associated with problems like poor grains, discolorations, and cracking. Commercial mechanical dryer utilization is not practical in remote regions due to the absence of electrical service, high startup costs, and ongoing operating expenses. In this work, a pilot mixed-flow rice drier that ran on rice husk energy and solar energy to power the driving fan was designed, produced, and tested. The major parts of the dryer assembly that were conceived and created were the combustion chamber, heat exchanger, and mixed-flow dryer. The results of the trial revealed that the combustion chamber's average temperature was 347.3 °C, the drying air at the heat exchanger output, where the drying chamber was attached, was 63.3 °C, and the combustion chamber and heat exchanger's respective efficiencies were 52.4% and 14.9%. The mixed-flow dryer powered by rice has a significantly lower operating cost than a comparable dryer powered by electricity, petrol, and diesel. The study makes it evident that such a reasonably priced and effective rice dryer might significantly help small-scale rice producers to extend the storage duration and maintain the quality of their product.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of two-stage variable temperature drying (VTD) on the quality and drying efficiency of paddy rice in the hot air-drying process. A constant temperature of 50 °C (CTD) was used as a control group. VTD and CTD methods were applied in a 15 ton batch type recirculating grain dryer. Three aspects (appearance quality, physical and chemical properties, taste quality) of the paddy rice samples from the dryer were measured and compared. It was observed that paddy rice with an initial moisture content of 25.3% (wet basis) was dried to 14% (wet basis). Compared to CTD, the VTD method could reduce the drying time and fissuring rate by 0.7 h and 42%, respectively. It had a head rice yield (HRY) of 78.45%, compared to 76.45% by CTD. The fatty acid content of the VTD samples was 2.28% lower than those of CTD, and it exhibited a 34% decrease in amylose content. These results show that two-stage VTD is an advanced hot air-drying method that can be used to improve the quality of dried paddy rice, maintain efficiency, and reduce the cost of the drying process by minimizing the rate of energy consumption.

Abstract:Investigation of exergy transfer is an important aspect for all grain drying industry. Exergy transfer of rice husk fired cyclonic furnace assisted recirculating mixed flow dryer (MFD) equipped with a heat exchanger, was sought in this study. A cyclonic furnace (CF) having capacity 0.5 MW and recirculating MFD were designed and developed to investigate exergy transfer during grain drying. Efficiency of furnace was determined to quantify performance of CF for industrial grain drying system. Exergetic efficiency was also thoroughfare performed for the developed CF, air mixing chamber (heat exchanger) and MFD. Thermal efficiency of the CF varied from 68.96 to 87.01% during drying of high moisture maize grain. Exergy efficiency of the CF, heat exchanger and drying chamber marked between 58.8 and 63.5%, 74.6–93.29%, and 3.03–21.9%, respectively. Exploration of exergy inflow persist between 53.32 and 60.51 kJ/s and 7.58 to 9.81 kJ/s while exergy outflow ranged between 7.58 and 9.81 kJ/s and 1.52 to 3.10 kJ/s, respectively for heat exchanger and drying chamber. Results based on exergy losses indicates that 44.01–51.54 kJ/s and 5.87–7.50 kJ/s of exergy is just loss through heat exchanger and drying chamber, respectively. Exergy improvement potential and sustainability index varied between 1.02 and 1.80 kJ/s and 1.17–1.40 kJ/s, respectively. Quality of final product is in acceptable range as color difference of dehydrated maize kernel varied from 9.19 ± 0.46 to 17.05 ± 0.13. Exergy results indicate that CF can aptly be applied for grain drying industry in commercial scale.

Abstract:Highlights The drying effect in the drying layer is affected by the status of the flow field. The angular box of the drying oven is optimized to improve the drying effect. The structure of the variable-section angular box significantly reduced unevenness and improved the drying effect. Abstract . Dryers are subject to problems as they are unable to fully and uniformly dry grain. Considering the mixed-flow drying process and improving the drying uniformity, this study conducted a numerical simulation of the hot air temperature field, velocity field, and pressure field with ordinary equal cross-section. The dryer was optimized by a variable-section angular box structure for simulation analysis and experimental verification. The results demonstrated the following: the optimized variable cross-section angular box can improve the uniformity of the overall flow of hot air in the drying box; that is, it diffuses uniformly in the temperature, speed, and pressure field of hot air. A comparative analysis of equal cross-section and variable cross-section angled tubes indicated that the unevenness coefficient of the tubes’ wind field of the same section was reduced from 81.31% to 66.8%, 51.19% to 32.78%, and 56.98% to 42.57%, which significantly reduced unevenness and improved the drying effect. Design and Performance Evaluation of a Small-scale Conduction Type Grain Dryer

Abstract:In order to reduce the mildew losses on grains, on the basis of the results of test and optimizing analysis of the first dryer, a new type of grain dryer with high temperature, quick drying was developed in the light of the present economic and technical conditions of the vast countryside in South and East China. A quality test of dried rice, performance test and production test were carried out. The dryer is easy to operate and works reliably. The qualities of rice dried by the dryer were found comparable with those of sundried rice. Moreover, the head rice percentage was slightly high. Therefore, it was concluded that this kind of dryer could be used in practical production, which has profound significance for solving the perennial problem of grain deterioration in developing countries due to delayed drying, especially during the wet season.

Abstract:Grain overturn machine,solar energy and heat pump technology were introduced for in-store drying of high moisture cereals,thereby achiving the purpose of high efficiency,energy-saving,rapid and even during decreasing grain moisture.The results showed that the system was suitable for the large warehouses stored cereals with smooth surface,drying cycle could be less than 15 days,the range of decreasing moisture was about 1.5% and COP of the heat pump over 5.0.To some extent,the solar energy contributed over 20% to the whole system.

Abstract:In this study, a new microwave infrared hot air rolling bed dryer (MIHRBD) was developed and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) techniques were introduced into the design process of the integrated drying system. The structure of the air distribution device was optimised to improve the airflow uniformity over the curved surface of the rolling bed in the microwave-hot air drying combined equipment. The research findings reveal that, across eleven models, the outlet airflow velocity stabilises once the number of mesh elements reaches 5 million, achieving significant computational accuracy at that point. Optimizing components like the uniform air distribution pipe, turbulence plates, and wind deflectors significantly enhanced airflow distribution uniformity by 52.1%. The best airflow and temperature distribution uniformity on the rolling bed surface was achieved when the inlet airflow velocity ranged from 1 to 3 m s−1, with minimum V d, U v and temperature non-uniformity coefficients of 0.007 m s−1, 7.2% and 0.2%, respectively. Validation tests on the MIHRBD pilot equipment showed that after optimizing the uniform air distribution device, the minimum temperature difference on the pleurotus eryngii surface was 3.1 °C. This confirmed the feasibility of the computational fluid dynamics method. Introducing hot air significantly enhanced pleurotus eryngii's drying uniformity, with the Page model effectively predicting the MIHRBD drying process. This study provides technical support for future developments in this field of equipment manufacturing and drying process analysis.

Abstract:For grain in-store drying, a solar assisted drying process has been developed, which consists of a set including a solar-assisted heat pump, a ventilation system, a grain stirrer, etc. In this way, low power consumption, short cycle time and water content uniformity can be achieved in comparison with the conventional method. A solar-assisted heat pump drying system has been designed and manufactured for a practical granary, and the energy consumption performance of the unit is analyzed. The analysis result shows that the solar fraction of the unit is higher than 20%, the coefficient of performance about system (COPS) is 5.19, and the specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) can reach 3.05 kg/kWh.

Abstract:<p>Drying is one of the most important and high-energy consumption unit operations in post-harvest treatment and storage of paddy, and heat loss is a major factor affecting drying efficiency and energy consumption of paddy drying process. To reveal the heat loss characteristics of paddy drying system, a multistage counter-flow drying process of industrial scale dryer was designed based on the conservations of energy and mass, thermodynamics theory and mechanisms of heat and mass transfer. And variation characteristics of heat loss in multistage counter-flow paddy drying process were investigated using psychrometric chart. Meanwhile, parameters of heat and mass transfer were used to analyse the experimental results of heat loss in multistage counter-flow drying. Results indicated that the method of analysing the variation characteristics of heat loss by using psychrometric chart was feasible, and heat losses of drying system were significantly affected by paddy properties, state parameters of drying medium and flow state. Furthermore, the specific heat losses of paddy warming, evaporated water vapour warming, exhaust and other were respectively in ranges of 75.33–238.92 KJ/kg, 2.61–4.67 KJ/kg, 54.34–757.76 KJ/kg and 33.44–236.28 KJ/kg. In high temperature drying segment, the maximum heat losses of the first high temperature drying chamber and other high temperature drying chambers were the heat loss of paddy warming and other heat loss, respectively. The maximum heat loss in all low temperature drying chambers was the heat loss of exhaust, and the heat loss for evaporated water vapour warming was the smallest in any drying chamber. Additionally, energy-saving measures were proposed based on the heat loss characteristics in industrial scale dryer.</p>

Abstract:Drying is a process of removing water from products down to a specific moisture content. It is an energy-intensive process widely-used for grain and biomass processing. Because of the complicated thermodynamics and transport phenomena involved in drying, it is challenging to analyse and optimise drying operations. In this study, computer simulations using a transient model are performed to simulate the real-time paddy drying, and analyse the exergy components, exergy efficiency, exergy loss and destruction of industrial-scale drying process under changing drying air temperature (60–80 °C) and flow velocity (0.56–0.83 m/s) and initial moisture content (0.22–0.3 g water/g wet matter) on a circulation counter-flow paddy dryer. Results show our model can predict paddy moisture content and temperature with mean relative deviations of 1.38% and 3.27%, respectively. Exergy efficiency of drying process is specified to be in the range of 28.75–35.68%. Main factor affecting drying rate and energy consumption in high moisture content regions of drying process is drying air flow velocity while that in low moisture content regions is drying air temperature. We also propose control strategy based on two-stage variable ventilation parameters that achieves high exergy utilization level, high drying rate, and high product quality for grain drying.

Abstract:Exhaust air recycling is a simple and commonly used technique to save energy when using a dryer. The fixed-bed drying test device with increased efficiency by condensation is a clean and energy-saving drying test device developed by combining exhaust air recycling and condensation dehumidification technology. In this paper, through comparisons with or without exhaust air circulation using the single factor test of drying process parameters and the response surface test of corn drying on this test device to investigate the energy-saving effect and drying characteristics resulting from the novel drying method of increased efficiency by condensation. We drew the following main conclusions: (1) increased efficiency drying by condensation resulted in an energy savings of 32–56% compared with the conventional open hot air drying; and (2) during the increased efficiency corn drying by condensation, the mean energy and exergy efficiencies were within 31.65–51.26% and 41.69–63.52%, respectively, when the air temperature was in the 30–55 °C range, and they were 24.96–65.28% and 30.40–84.90%, respectively, when the air passed through the grain layer at 0.2–0.6 m/s; both of these increased with increasing air temperature, and decreased with increasing air velocity. These conclusions may constitute an important reference for investigating the energy-saving drying process of increased efficiency by condensation and developing relevant energy-saving drying equipment.

Abstract:The concern of cumulative demand of parboiled paddy dryings signposts the requirement of more optimized and mechanized processing. The study was conducted to fulfill the requirements of an efficient heat pump (HP) dryer unit for paddy drying in subtropical monsoon climate region of China, by utilizing the different hot air circulation methods and environmental conditions in the winter season. Therefore, a newly designed HP drying test bench enhanced with a series of heat pumps was employed for parboiled paddy drying of different varieties and sample loads. The drying efficiency and performance of HP was assessed in terms of specific moisture evaporation rate (SMER), moisture evaporation rate (MER), and coefficient of performance (COP) in closed and open-loop cycles. The closed and open-loop cycles hot air dryings were employed with the temperature and velocity ranges of 50–60˚C and 2–3 m/s, respectively. Furthermore, SMER and MER for both varieties and COP in closed and open loops were optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). The findings of the study revealed the dependency of SMER and MER on the temperature and velocity, as minimum SMER and MER were witnessed at 47.93˚C and 2.5 m/s, while COP in closed loop (2.211) was higher than that of the open cycle (1.409) due to the entrance of a significant amount of ambient air into the designed system during each cycle. Moreover, the intended parameters were optimized by exploiting RSM and were as follows: 60˚C (drying temperature), 2.76 m/s (air velocity), 0.321 (SMER1), 1.318 (SMER2), 0.208 (OSMER1), 0.865 kg/kWh (OSMER2), 0.202 (MER1), 0.796 (MER2), 0.180 (OMER1), 0.689 kg/h (OMER2), 2.211 (COP-closed), and 1.409 (COP-open). We further perceived that the temperature has more effect on the drying efficiency compared to air velocity as performance indicators were found to be increased by lofting the temperature profiles. The confidence of interval was observed significant (5%) as we equated the optimized values with experimental values, that particularly offerings our study a valuable to achieve a high quality of parboiled paddy.

Abstract:Solar powered drying is an environment-friendly technique utilized to dry grain. A novel in-store drying system composed of Flat-plate air collectors, a heat pump, fans, air ducts, and grain stirrer is proposed to make full use of solar energy and to reduce the consumption of electricity. A demonstration system was built and tested in Kunming, China. The experimental data was compared with the results derived from a mathematical simulation. The experimental and simulated data demonstrate that the solar assisted heat pump drying system improved the performance of the in-store drying process. An average temperature rise of 8.9 degrees C for the granary inlet air was achieved. The drying rate was increased and the uniformity of grain moisture content was improved. Low-cost drying methods for developing countries

Abstract:Low-cost drying technologies suitable for rural farming areas are presented. Some of the important considerations with regard to their suitability include: 1. Low initial capital; 2. easy-to-operate with no complicated electronic/mechanical protocol, and 3. effective in promoting better drying kinetics. The drying technologies that were selected include fluidized bed, spouted bed, infrared, solar, simple convective and desiccant drying. A brief introduction on each drying technology has been presented followed by some technical details on their working operations. Examples of farming crops suitable for the employment of individual drying technology are provided to illustrate their potential application in agricultural product drying.

Abstract:A novel solar assisted heat pump (SAHP) system for in-bin grain drying was proposed to solve the problems of poor uniformity and long drying time of grain in depot with higher initial water content in high grain piles. The effects of different operational parameters on the drying performance were numerically and experimentally investigated. The experimental results indicated that the thermal effi-ciency of the solar collector and the COP of the heat pump reached 63% and 5.03 under given conditions. The average heating capacity of the SAHP system was 130.2 kW, consistent with the simulation results under a typical sunny day in winter. The average water content of 3,760 tons of grain dropped from 12.9% to 12.5% after 42 h of drying. The specific moisture extraction rate of the proposed system and the exergy efficiency of the grain bin were 1.934 kg/kWh and 40.27%, respectively. The operating cost of SAHP grain drying decreased from 5.57 $/t to 1.43 $/t compared with the grain drying machine for the same drying weight. The daily drying capacity increased from 166 t/d to 334 t/d compared with the mechanical ventilation drying for the same water content reduction rate. Abstract:Sewage sludge drying is a critical step in the process of achieving final sludge treatment and disposal for its minimization and stabilization. This paper developed the drying model by coupling penetration theory and two dimensional Markov chain to simulate the sludge drying kinetics in a double-axis paddle dryer. A series of sludge drying experiments were carried out in a double-axis continuous paddle dryer so as to study the influences of sludge flowrate, stirrer speed, tilt angle, overflow height and dryer wall temperature on the drying mechanism. During the drying process, sludge crusting occurred in some experiments according to different operating conditions. It was a phenomenon that sludge in some cells adhered and then formed crust on the heat transfer surface with moisture content decreasing leading a decrease in sludge drying rate in the cells. Thus, in order to more accurately explain the sludge crusting in partial operating conditions, the viscous zone was introduced. The crusting drastically increases the heat transfer resistance which occurs easily in high wall temperature, high overflow height, high sludge flowrate and low stirrer speed condition while the tilt angle of the dryer has little effect on crusting.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the airflow distribution in a mixed-flow dryer (MFD) and to study the effect of different bed materials and air duct arrangements. The results were used to validate the numerical model developed in a previous work based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). A series of experiments have been conducted at a semi-technical MFD test dryer with horizontal and diagonal air duct arrangement. Wheat and rapeseed were used as bed materials. The experiments were performed under isothermal conditions. Two experimental methods were selected and adapted to the measuring problem—the measurement of the isobar distribution within the grain bed and the residence time analysis using the tracer gas pulse method. As could be shown, the isobar distributions measured for wheat and rapeseed agreed well with the model predictions. The numerical model could calculate the influence of the bed material with its different particle characteristics (e.g., particle shape, particle size, bed porosity). The results obtained from the residence time analysis confirmed the known quartering of the air stream flowing from one inlet air duct to the four surrounding outlet air ducts for the horizontal air duct arrangement; in the diagonal air duct arrangement, the air stream from one inlet air duct was nearly halved flowing to the two adjacent diagonal outlet air ducts. These results were confirmed by investigations of the air velocity distribution within the grain bulk. Further experiments are necessary to refine the model. The residence time and isobar measurements will be extended to study the influence of different air properties under real drying conditions, the effect of structural elements, and dryer designs.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The demoisturizing or drying process is an essential technique to prolong the life of agricultural product. Typically the impinging steam dryer (ISD), one of hot-air drying process, is suitable to dry particulate materials that contain very high moisture. This dryer allows high speed steam carrying the grains to impinge against each other at the middle point of two opposite steams. The particles can be theoretically accelerated to a velocity near the speed of gas. The impingement between solid-in-gas steams causes an impingement zone that has high turbulence with high concentration of particles so this two-phase turbulence area provides excellent heat and mass transfer. The literatures related to this research show that various parameters including distance between the tube and the drying chamber, inlet air temperature, loading ratio, material moving time through the system have affected the performance of an impinging stream dryer. The performance of an impinging stream dryer can also be evaluated in terms of the volumetric water evaporation rate, volumetric heat transfer coefficient and specific energy consumption. However, researches of impinging stream dryer are considered as a new technology in Thailand. Hence, it is necessary to study on the effects of various parameters on the performance of an impinging stream dryer in order to be really applied to the Thai industries.
