Abstract:The period-doubling bifurcation process is one of the routes to chaos. During this process, when the system parameter reaches the bifurcation points, the periodic orbits lose their stability and double their periods. It is found that the periodic orbits born in this process exhibit an intimate relationship. On one hand, the orbits with relatively small periods can be approximately extracted from the orbit with a large period; on the other hand, the orbits with large periods can be approximately constructed by the orbit with relatively small period. Furthermore, our analytical results strongly suggest that the unstable periodic orbits originating from the period-doubling bifurcation process should play a big role in the ensuing chaos, at least at its early stage.
Universal finite-time scaling in the transcritical, saddle-node, and pitchfork discrete and continuous bifurcations

Abstract:Bifurcations are one of the most remarkable features of dynamical systems. Corral et al. [Sci. Rep. 8(11783), 2018] showed the existence of scaling laws describing the transient (finite-time) dynamics in discrete dynamical systems close to a bifurcation point, following an approach that was valid for the transcritical as well as for the saddle-node bifurcations. We reformulate those previous results and extend them to other discrete and continuous bifurcations, remarkably the pitchfork bifurcation. In contrast to the previous work, we obtain a finite-time bifurcation diagram directly from the scaling law, without a necessary knowledge of the stable fixed point. The derived scaling laws provide a very good and universal description of the transient behavior of the systems for long times and close to the bifurcation points.

Abstract:A dynamical system that undergoes a supercritical Hopf's bifurcation is perturbed by a multiplicative Brownian motion that scales with a small parameter $\epsilon$. The random fluctuations of the system at the critical point are studied when the dynamics starts near equilibrium, in the limit as $\epsilon$ goes to zero. Under a space-time scaling the system can be approximated by a 2-dimensional process lying on the centre manifold of the Hopf's bifurcation and a slow radial component together with a fast angular component are identified. Then the critical fluctuations are described by a "universal" stochastic differential equation whose coefficients are obtained taking the average with respect to the fast variable.

Abstract:Critical transitions (or tipping points) are drastic sudden changes observed in many dynamical systems. Large classes of critical transitions are associated with systems, which drift slowly towards a bifurcation point. In the context of stochastic ordinary differential equations, there are results on growth of variance and autocorrelation before a transition, which can be used as possible warning signs in applications. A similar theory has recently been developed in the simplest setting for stochastic partial differential equations (SPDEs) for self-adjoint operators in the drift term. This setting leads to real discrete spectrum and growth of the covariance operator via a certain scaling law. In this paper, we develop this theory substantially further. We cover the cases of complex eigenvalues, degenerate eigenvalues as well as continuous spectrum. This provides a fairly comprehensive theory for most practical applications of warning signs for SPDE bifurcations.

Abstract:The notion of scale-invariant dynamics is well established at late times in quantum chaotic systems, as illustrated by the emergence of a ramp in the spectral form factor (SFF). Building on the results of the preceding Letter [Phys. Rev. Lett. 131, 060404 (2023)], we explore features of scale-invariant dynamics of survival probability and SFF at criticality, i.e., at eigenstate transitions from quantum chaos to localization. We show that, in contrast to the quantum chaotic regime, the quantum dynamics at criticality do not only exhibit scale invariance at late times, but also at much shorter times that we refer to as mid-time dynamics. Our results apply to both quadratic and interacting models. Specifically, we study Anderson models in dimensions three to five and power-law random banded matrices for the former, and the quantum sun model and the ultrametric model for the latter, as well as the Rosenzweig-Porter model.

Global Dynamics of A Duffing Oscillator with Delayed Displacement Feedback

Abstract:This paper presents a systematic study on the dynamics of a controlled Duffing oscillator with delayed displacement feedback, especially on the local bifurcations of periodic motions with respect to the time delay. The study begins with the analysis of the stability switches of the trivial equilibrium of the system with various parametric combinations and gives the critical values of time delay, where the trivial equilibrium may change its stability. It shows that as the time delay increases from zero to the positive infinity, the trivial equilibrium undergoes a different number of stability switches for different parametric combinations, and becomes unstable at last for all parametric combinations. Then, the method of multiple scales and the numerical computation method are jointly used to obtain a global diagram of local bifurcations of periodic motions with respect to the time delay for each type of parametric combinations. The diagrams indicate two kinds of local bifurcations. One is the saddle-node bifurcation and the other is the pitchfork bifurcation, of which the former means the sudden emerging of two periodic motions with different stability and the latter implies the Hopf bifurcation in the sense of dynamic bifurcation. A novel feature, referred to as the property of "periodicity in delay", is observed in the global diagrams of local bifurcations and used to justify the validity of infinite number of bifurcating branches in the bifurcation diagrams. The stability of the periodic motions is discussed not only from the high-order approximation of the asymptotic solution, but also from viewpoint of basin of attraction, which gives a good explanation for coexisting periodic motions and quasi-periodic motions, as well as an overall idea of basin of attraction. Afterwards, a conventional Poincare section technique is used to reveal the abundant dynamic structures of a tori bifurcation sequence, which shows that the system will repeat similar quasi-periodic motions several times, with an increase of time delay, enroute to a chaotic motion. Finally, a new Poincare section technique is proposed as a comparison with the conventional one, and the results show that the dynamical structures on the two kinds of Poincare sections are topologically symmetric in rotation.

Abstract:The period-doubling bifurcation leads a T-periodic solution to a 2T-periodic solution. We develop the relation between these two periodic solutions analytically for a general parameter-dependent dynamic system. Such the relation is further confirmed by one example and shows that the 2T-periodic solution contains all the information of the T-periodic solution near the bifurcation point. Therefore we can infer the T-periodic solution from the 2T-periodic solution. Conversely, we may obtain the part of the 2T-periodic solution from the T-periodic solution. The work sheds light on the period-doubling bifurcation and chaos in general, the self-similarity of chaotic solutions in particular, forms a benchmark of numerical accuracy checking and provides new numerical schemes of period-doubling bifurcation detection.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the following nonlinear single species diffusive system [Formula: see text] where bi(t), aik(t), Dij(t), i, j = 1, 2,…, n; k = 1, 2,…, li are all continuous ω-periodic functions, and βik, i = 1, 2,…, n; k = 1, 2,…, li are positive constants. Sufficient conditions which guarantee the permanence, extinction and existence of a unique globally attractive positive ω-periodic solution are obtained. Examples together with their numeric simulations show the feasibility of the main results.

Abstract:Stochastic period-doubling bifurcation is explored in a forced Duffing system with a bounded random parameter as an additional weak harmonic perturbation added to the system.Firstly,the biharmonic driven Duffing system with a random parameter is reduced to its equivalent deterministic one,and then the responses of the stochastic system can be obtained by available effective numerical methods.Finally numerical simulations show that the phase of the additional weak harmonic perturbation has great influence on the stochastic period-doubling bifurcation in the biharmonic driven Duffing system.It is emphasized that,different from the deterministic biharmonic driven Duffing system,the intensity of random parameter in the Duffing system can also be taken as a bifurcation parameter,which can lead to the stochastic period-doubling bifurcations.
Pitchfork bifurcation along a slow parameter ramp: coherent structures in the critical scaling

Abstract:We investigate the slow passage through a pitchfork bifurcation in a spatially extended system, when the onset of instability is slowly varying in space. We focus here on the critical parameter scaling, when the instability locus propagates with speed $c\sim \varepsilon^{1/3}$, where $\varepsilon$ is a small parameter that measures the gradient of the parameter ramp. Our results establish how the instability is mediated by a front traveling with the speed of the parameter ramp, and demonstrate scalings for a delay or advance of the instability relative to the bifurcation locus depending on the sign of $c$, that is on the direction of propagation of the parameter ramp through the pitchfork bifurcation. The results also include a generalization of the classical Hastings-McLeod solution of the Painlevé-II equation to Painlevé-II equations with a drift term.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with dynamic bifurcation from infinity and multiplicity of stationary solutions for nonlinear evolution equations near resonance. First, we prove some new global continuation results and establish a general theorem on dynamic bifurcation from infinity in the framework of local semiflows on metric spaces. Then, by applying these abstract results, we derive more precise descriptions on the dynamic bifurcation from infinity of evolution equations in Banach spaces. Finally, we focus our attention on the parabolic equation $u_t-\Delta u={\lambda} u+f(x,u)$ associated with the Dirichlet boundary condition, where $f$ satisfies the appropriate Landesman--Lazer type condition. A detailed discussion on the dynamical behavior and the multiplicity of stationary solutions of the equation near resonance will be presented.
Slow Passage through a Saddle-Node Bifurcation in Discrete Dynamical Systems

Abstract:We study a discrete non-autonomous system whose autonomous counterpart (with the frozen bifurcation parameter) admits a saddle-node bifurcation, and in which the bifurcation parameter slowly changes in time and is characterized by a sweep rate constant $\epsilon$. The discrete system is more appropriate for modeling realistic systems since only time series data is available. We show that in contrast to its autonomous counterpart, when the time mesh size $\Delta t$ is less than the order $O(\epsilon)$, there is a bifurcation delay as the bifurcation time-varying parameter is varied through the bifurcation point, and the delay is proportional to the two-thirds power of the sweep rate constant $\epsilon$. This bifurcation delay is significant in various realistic systems since it allows one to take necessary action promptly before a sudden collapse or shift to different states. On the other hand, when the time mesh size $\Delta t$ is larger than the order $o(\epsilon)$, the dynamical behavior of the solution is dramatically changed before the bifurcation point. This behavior is not observed in the autonomous counterpart. Therefore, the dynamical behavior of the system strongly depends on the time mesh size. Finally. due to the very discrete feature of the system, there are no efficient tools for the analytical study of the system. Our approach is elementary and analytical.

Abstract:The anomalous dynamic scaling behavior of the d+1 dimensional non-local growth equations is investigated based on the scaling approach. The growth equations studied include the non-local Kardar–Parisi–Zhang (NKPZ), non-local Sun-Guo-Grant (NSGG), and non-local Lai-Das Sarma-Villain (NLDV) equations. The anomalous scaling exponents in both the weak- and strong-coupling regions are obtained, respectively. Our results show that non-local interactions can affect anomalous scaling properties of surface fluctuations.

Abstract:Chaos is a nonlinear phenomenon that reveals itself everywhere in nature and in many fields of science. It has gained increasing attention from researchers and scientists over the last two decades. In this article, the nature of the fixed and periodic states are examined for a discrete two-parameter map; a composition of Euler's numerical map and the logistic map. Further, the dynamical properties such as fixed states, period-doubling, and stability in fixed and periodic states are also described and the onset of chaos is characterized in detail followed by a few lemmas and remarks. Afterward, some scaling methods such as the bifurcation scale, fork-width scale, and Lyapunov exponent are illustrated to examine the appearance of chaos for the discrete two-parameter map. Experimental and numerical simulations are conducted followed by some bifurcation graphs, tables, and remarks. The scaling property is discussed in two key parameters. In addition, a comparative analysis of fork-width length, bifurcation length, and the maximum Lyapunov exponent is also presented to demonstrate the validity of the results.

Abstract:In this paper, the nonlinear dynamics of a Duffing nonautonomous oscillator with absolute function is investigated, and the switching boundary and the corresponding domains are shown. Based on the discontinuous dynamical theory, the motions of the non-smooth duffing system at the switching boundary are studied, and the corresponding analysis conditions of the different motions are obtained, and the parameter mappings are also given. Through numerical simulations, chaotic motions and period orbits are described in detail with different parameters and initial conditions, and the switching bifurcation diagrams through the boundary and basins of attractors are also drawn to investigate the behaviors of the system and coexistence of different attractors.

Abstract:The conditions of constraint are treated by means of the mean constraint plane and the mean jump equation, in which the method of the Chebyshev polynomial approximation, previously used to explore period-doubling bifurcation of stochastic smooth systems, is applied to stochastic non-smooth systems. Numerical simulations show that period-doubling bifurcation exists in stochastic Duffing one-sided constraint system just as in smooth stochastic Duffing system, and furthermore, the Chebyshev polynomial approximation is an effective method in exploring the dynamical behavior of stochastic non-smooth system.

Abstract:This paper examines the dynamic behavior of a particular category of discrete predator-prey system that feature both fear effect and refuge, using both analytical and numerical methods. The critical coefficients and properties of bifurcating periodic solutions for Flip and Hopf bifurcations are computed using the center manifold theorem and bifurcation theory. Additionally, numerical simulations are employed to illustrate the bifurcation phenomenon and chaos characteristics. The results demonstrate that period-doubling and Hopf bifurcations are two typical routes to generate chaos, as evidenced by the calculation of the maximum Lyapunov exponents near the critical bifurcation points. Finally, a feedback control method is suggested, utilizing feedback of system states and perturbation of feedback parameters, to efficiently manage the bifurcations and chaotic attractors of the discrete predator-prey model.
