Abstract:Interacting fermion systems in one dimension, which in the low energy approximation are described by Luttinger liquid theory, can be reformulated as systems of weakly interacting particles with fractional exchange statistics. This is shown by use of Landau's Fermi liquid theory, with quasiparticles interpreted as adiabatically dressed fermions. An application of this method is included, where boundary excitations of a two-dimensional quantum Hall electron system are studied.

Abstract:We use quantum Monte Carlo, including backflow corrections, to investigate a two-component Fermi gas on the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance and contrast it with the hard sphere gas. We find that, in both cases, the Fermi liquid becomes unstable to ferromagnetism at a $k_F a$ smaller than the mean field result, where $k_F$ is the Fermi wavevector and $a$ the scattering length. Even though the total energies $E(k_F a)$ are similar in the two cases, their pair correlations and kinetic energies are completely different, reflecting the underlying potentials. We discuss the extent to which our calculations shed light on recent experiments.

Abstract:Abstract Quantum statistics plays a fundamental role in the laws of nature. Haldane fractional exclusion statistics (FES) generalizes the Pauli exclusion statistics, and can emerge in the properties of elementary particle and hole excitations of a quantum system consisting of conventional bosons or fermions. FES has a long history of intensive studies, but its simple realization in interacting physical systems is rare. Here we report on a simple non-mutual FES that depicts the particle-hole symmetry breaking in interacting Bose gases at a quantum critical point. We show that the FES distribution directly comes from particle-hole symmetry breaking. Based on exact solutions, quantum Monte Carlo simulations, and experiments, we find that, over a wide range of interaction strengths, the macroscopic physical properties of these gases are determined by non-interacting quasi-particles that obey non-mutual FES of the same form in one and two dimensions (1D and 2D). Whereas strongly interacting Bose gases reach full fermionization in 1D, they exhibit incomplete fermionization in 2D. Our results provide a generic connection between interaction-induced particle-hole symmetry breaking (depicted by FES) and macroscopic properties of many-body systems in arbitrary dimensions. Our work lays the groundwork for using FES to explore quantum criticality and other novel many-body phenomena in strongly-correlated quantum systems.

Abstract:I show that fractional exclusion statistics (FES) is manifested in general interacting systems and I calculate the exclusion statistics parameters. Most importantly, I show that the mutual exclusion statistics parameters--when the presence of particles in one Hilbert space influences the dimension of another Hilbert space--are proportional to the dimension of the Hilbert space on which they act. This result, although surprising and different from the usual way of understanding the FES, renders this statistics consistent and valid in the thermodynamic limit, in accordance with the conjucture introduced in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 40, F1013 (2007).

Abstract:The ground-state properties of particles obeying fractional statistics, on lattices with spherical topology, are studied numerically. The possible existence of superfluidity in semion systems is examined by studies of pairing energies, flux quantization, and the effects of applied magnetic fields. Evidence of superfluidity is observed, in agreement with previous numerical studies on cylindrical topologies. Comparison of the results for these different topologies allows some conclusions to be made about finite-size and boundary effects. In particular, we argue that there is no constant shift in the flux-quantization values.

Abstract:In the present paper, we study the existence of metallic ferromagnetism in a cluster of nanometer scale,which is described by the Hubbard model defined on a complete graph. Therefore, the system is highly frustrated with respect to electron hopping. By solving the model exactly, we show that its ground state is fully spin-polarized at half-filling, even if the Coulomb interaction is finite. This conclusion is in sharp contrast to the well-known result for the Hubbard model on a bipartite lattice. As a result, our exact solution strongly suggests that frustration may play an important role in causing metallic ferromagnetism.
Itinerant ferromagnetism of a repulsive atomic Fermi gas: A quantum Monte Carlo study

Abstract:We investigate the phase diagram of a two-component repulsive Fermi gas at by means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Both purely repulsive and resonant attractive model potentials are considered in order to analyze the limits of the universal regime where the details of interatomic forces can be neglected. The equation of state of both balanced and unbalanced systems is calculated as a function of the interaction strength and the critical density for the onset of ferromagnetism is determined. The energy of the strongly polarized gas is calculated and parametrized in terms of the physical properties of repulsive polarons, which are relevant for the stability of the fully ferromagnetic state. Finally, we analyze the phase diagram in the interaction-polarization plane under the assumption that only phases with homogeneous magnetization can be produced.

Abstract:We study the anisotropic effect of the Coulomb interaction on a 1/3-filling fractional quantum Hall system by using an exact diagonalization method on small systems in torus geometry. For weak anisotropy the system remains to be an incompressible quantum liquid, although anisotropy manifests itself in density correlation functions and excitation spectra. When the strength of anisotropy increases, we find the system develops a Hall-smectic-like phase with a one-dimensional charge density wave order and is unstable towards the one-dimensional crystal in the strong anisotropy limit. In all three phases of the Laughlin liquid, Hall-smectic-like, and crystal phases the ground state of the anisotropic Coulomb system can be well described by a family of model wave functions generated by an anisotropic projection Hamiltonian. We discuss the relevance of the results to the geometrical description of fractional quantum Hall states proposed by Haldane [Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 116801 (2011)].
Nonperturbative Effects on the Ferromagnetic Transition in Repulsive Fermi Gases

Abstract:It is generally believed that a dilute spin-1/2 Fermi gas with repulsive interactions can undergo a ferromagnetic phase transition to a spin-polarized state at a critical gas parameter $(k_{\rm F}a)_c$. Previous theoretical predictions of the ferromagnetic phase transition have been based on the perturbation theory, which treats the gas parameter as a small number. On the other hand, Belitz, Kirkpatrick, and Vojta (BKV) have argued that the phase transition in clean itinerant ferromagnets is generically of first order at low temperatures, due to the correlation effects that lead to a nonanalytic term in the free energy. The second-order perturbation theory predicts a first-order phase transition at $(k_{\rm F}a)_c=1.054$, consistent with the BKV argument. However, since the critical gas parameter is expected to be of order O(1), perturbative predictions may be unreliable. In this paper we study the nonperturbative effects on the ferromagnetic phase transition by summing the particle-particle ladder diagrams to all orders in the gas parameter. We consider a universal repulsive Fermi gas where the effective range effects can be neglected, which can be realized in a two-component Fermi gas of $^6$Li atoms by using a nonadiabatic field switch to the upper branch of a Feshbach resonance with a positive s-wave scattering length. Our theory predicts a second-order phase transition, which indicates that ferromagnetic transition in dilute Fermi gases is possibly a counterexample to the BKV argument. The predicted critical gas parameter $(k_{\rm F}a)_c=0.858$ is in good agreement with the recent quantum Monte Carlo result $(k_{\rm F}a)_c=0.86$ for a nearly zero-range potential [S. Pilati, \emph{et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 105}, 030405 (2010)]. We also compare the spin susceptibility with the quantum Monte Carlo result and find good agreement.
Evidences for interaction-induced Haldane fractional exclusion statistics in one and higher dimensions

Abstract:Haldane fractional exclusion statistics (FES) has a long history of intense studies, but its realization in physical systems is rare. Here we study repulsively interacting Bose gases at and near a quantum critical point, and find evidences that such strongly correlated gases obey simple non-mutual FES over a wide range of interaction strengths in both one and two dimensions. Based on exact solutions in one dimension, quantum Monte Carlo simulations and experiments in both dimensions, we show that the thermodynamic properties of these interacting gases, including entropy per particle, density and pressure, are essentially equivalent to those of non-interacting particles with FES. Accordingly, we establish a simple interaction-to-FES mapping that reveals the statistical nature of particle-hole symmetry breaking induced by interaction in such quantum many-body systems. Whereas strongly interacting Bose gases reach full fermionization in one dimension, they exhibit incomplete fermionization in two dimensions. Our results open a route to understanding correlated interacting systems via non-interacting particles with FES in arbitrary dimensions.

Abstract:Whether a spin-1/2 Fermi gas will become ferromagnetic as the strength of repulsive interaction increases is a long-standing controversial issue. Recently this problem has been studied experimentally by Jo [Science 325, 1521 (2009)] in which the authors claim a ferromagnetic transition is observed. This work is to point out the results of this experiment cannot distinguish whether the system is in a ferromagnetic state or in a nonmagnetic but strongly short-range correlated state. A conclusive experimental demonstration of ferromagnetism relies on the observation of ferromagnetic domains.

Abstract:We discuss the thermodynamics of a gas of free particles obeying Haldane's exclusion statistics, deriving low temperature and low density expansions. For gases with a constant density of states, we derive an exact equation of state and find that temperature-dependent quantities are independent of the statistics parameter.

Abstract:Since the discovery of the fractional quantum Hall effect in 1982 there has been considerable theoretical discussion on the possibility of fractional quantization of conductance in the absence of Landau levels formed by a quantizing magnetic field. Although various situations have been theoretically envisaged, particularly lattice models in which band flattening resembles Landau levels, the predicted fractions have never been observed. In this Letter, we show that odd and even denominator fractions can be observed, and manipulated, in the absence of a quantizing magnetic field, when a low-density electron system in a GaAs based one-dimensional quantum wire is allowed to relax in the second dimension. It is suggested that such a relaxation results in formation of a zigzag array of electrons with ring paths which establish a cyclic current and a resultant lowering of energy. The behavior has been observed for both symmetric and asymmetric confinement but increasing the asymmetry of the confinement potential, to result in a flattening of confinement, enhances the appearance of new fractional states. We find that an in-plane magnetic field induces new even denominator fractions possibly indicative of electron pairing. The new quantum states described here have implications both for the physics of low dimensional electron systems and also for quantum technologies. This work will enable further development of structures which are designed to electrostatically manipulate the electrons for the formation of particular configurations. In turn, this could result in a designer tailoring of fractional states to amplify particular properties of importance in future quantum computation. Abstract:In this work we investigate the ground state of a momentum-confined interacting 2D electron gas, a momentum-space analog of an infinite quantum well. The study is performed by combining analytical results with a numerical exact diagonalization procedure. We find a ferromagnetic ground state near a particular electron density and for a range of effective electron (or hole) masses. We argue that this observation may be relevant to the generalized Stoner ferromagnetism recently observed in multilayer graphene systems. Abstract:The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) occurs at certain magnetic field strengths B*(n) in a two-dimensional electron gas of density n at strong magnetic fields perpendicular to the plane of the electron gas. At these magnetic fields strengths, the system is incompressible, i.e., there is a finite cost in energy for creating charge density fluctuations in the bulk, while the boundary of the electron gas has gapless modes of density waves. The bulk energy gap arises because of the strong electron-electron interactions. While there are very good models for infinite homogeneous systems and for the gapless excitations of the boundary of the electron gas, computational methods to accurately model finite, inhomogeneous systems with more then about ten electrons have not been available until very recently. We will here review an ensemble density functional approach to studying the ground state of large inhomogeneous spin polarized FQHE systems.

Abstract:With quasi-classical approximations,statistic properties of Fermi gas in a strong magnetic field at high temperatures are studied.Analytical statistic characteristic quantities are given,and effects of magnetic field as well as temperature on statistic properties of the system are analyzed.Compared with a system in low temperatures,statistic characteristic quantities of Fermi gas in a strong magnetic field at high temperatures do not oscillate.The magnetic field decreases total energy of the system,and increases the chemical potential,heat capacity,entropy,pressure and stability of the system.The higher the temperature is,the weaker effects of magnetic field on total energy and heat capacity and the stronger effects on chemical potential are.

Abstract:We discuss how one-dimensional interacting fermion systems, which in the low energy approximation are described by Luttinger liquid theory, can be reformulated as systems of weakly interacting particles with fractional charge and statistics. Our approach is to use Landau's phenomenological approach to Fermi liquid theory, where the quasiparticles are interpreted as adiabatically dressed fermions. In an earlier publication the local charge carried by these excitations has been shown to be fractional. We focus here on the statistics of the quasiparticles and show that by a change of momentum variables the Landau parameters of the generalized Fermi fluid can be transformed to zero. This change in interaction is compensated by a change of the entropy function, which is consistent with the interpretation of the quasiparticles as satisfying generalized exclusion statistics.

Abstract:The elementary excitations from conventional magnetic ordered states, such as ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, are magnons. Here, we elaborate a case where the well-defined magnons are completely absent and the spin excitation spectra exhibit an entire continuum in the itinerant edge ferromagnetic state of graphene arising from the flat-band edge electronic states. Based on further studies of the entanglement entropy and a finite-size analysis, we show that the continuum other than the Stoner part results from the spin-1/2 spinons deconfined from magnons. The magnetically ordered edge state without magnonic excitations but a spinon continuum is ascribed to a ferromagnetic Luttinger liquid. The investigation is carried out by using the numerical exact diagonalization method with a projection of the interacting Hamiltonian onto the flat band.

Abstract:We discuss exclusion statistics parameters for quasiholes and quasielectrons excited above the fractional quantum Hall states near $\nu=p/(2np+1)$. We derive the diagonal statistics parameters from the (``unprojected'') composite fermion (CF) picture. We propose values for the off-diagonal (mutual) statistics parameters as a simple modification of those obtained from the unprojected CF picture, by analyzing finite system numerical spectra in the spherical geometry.
