Abstract:A pQCD-based model for parton production and equilibration in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions is reviewed. The model combines pQCD processes including initial and final state radiations together with string phenomenology for nonperturbative soft processes. Nuclear effects on the initial parton production, such as multiple parton scattering and nuclear shadowing of parton distribution functions are considered. Comparisons with existing data are made and further tests of the model to constrain model parameters are proposed. With the obtained space-time history of the parton production, evolution of the minijet gas toward a fully equilibrated parton plasma is studied. Direct probes of the early parton dynamics, such as pre-equilibrium photon and dilepton production, open charm production, J/psi suppression and jet quenching are also reviewed.

Abstract:With the aim of understanding the phase structure of nuclear matter created in high-energy nuclear collisions at finite baryon density, a beam energy scan program has been carried out at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). In this mini-review, most recent experimental results on collectivity, criticality and heavy flavor productions will be discussed. The goal here is to establish the connection between current available data and future heavy-ion collision experiments in a high baryon density region.

Abstract:Recent developments showed that hadron light-cone parton distributions could be directly extracted from spacelike correlators, known as quasi parton distributions, in the large hadron momentum limit. Unlike the normal light-cone parton distribution, a quasi parton distribution contains ultraviolet (UV) power divergence associated with the Wilson line self energy. We show that to all orders in the coupling expansion, the power divergence can be removed by a "mass" counterterm in the auxiliary z-field formalism, in the same way as the renormalization of power divergence for an open Wilson line. After adding this counterterm, the quasi quark distribution is improved such that it contains at most logarithmic divergences. Based on a simple version of discretized gauge action, we present the one-loop matching kernel between the improved non-singlet quasi quark distribution with a lattice regulator and the corresponding quark distribution in dimensional regularization.

Abstract:Extended quark distribution functions are presented obtained by fitting a large amount of experimental data of the l-A DIS process on the basis of an improved nuclear density model. The experimental data of l-A DIS processes with A >= 3 in the region 0.0010 <= x <= 0.9500 axe quite satisfactorily described by using the extended formulae. Our knowledge of the influence of nuclear matter on the quark distributions is deepened.

Abstract:Double parton distributions can be computed from the perturbative splitting of one parton into two if the distance between the two observed partons is small. We develop schemes to take into account quark mass effects in this computation, and we study these schemes numerically at leading order in the strong coupling. Furthermore, we investigate in detail the structure of the next-to-leading order corrections to the splitting kernels that include quark mass effects.

Abstract:When a fast parton propagates in nuclear medium it may suffer multiple scattering with other partons, which leads to two effects: transverse momentum broadening and jet quenching. In this article, we review the theoretical development of the transverse momentum broadening in the nuclear medium based on the pQCD factorization of higher twist processes, and discuss the implementation of the parton energy loss within higher twist expansion framework in the calculation of the leading hadron productions in relativistic heavy ion collisions at the RHIC and the LHC. We introduce the techniques of next-to-leading order (NLO) calculation for twist-4 process, and verify, for the first time, the universality of nuclear medium property, and we also identify the QCD evolution equation for the nuclear medium. We apply the high twist factorization formalism to calculate the hadron production at backward rapidity in proton-nucleus collisions at RHIC and the LHC, and find that the nuclear enhancement phenomena observed in experiments can be explained as incoherent double scattering. We further investigate parton energy loss effect in the framework of higher twist expansion on the leading hadron production in heavy ion collisions up to the accuracy of NLO pQCD, and calculate the yields and the nuclear modification factors of pi(0), eta, rho(0), phi, K-S(0) and omega, and discuss the ratios of the identified hadron yields. By comparing our theoretical results with the latest experimental data on the leading hardon spectra in heavy ion collisions, we also extrapolate the jet transport coe fficient. It is found the identified hadron yields in A+A collisions depend on three factors: the initial hard jet spectrum and the energy loss mechanism as well as parton fragmentation functions to the hadron in vacuum.

Abstract:Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off heavy nuclei is studied within the framework of generalized factorization in perturbative QCD with a complete calculation beyond the helicity amplitude (or soft bremsstrahlung) approximation. Such a calculation gives rise to new corrections to the modified quark fragmentation functions. The effective parton energy loss is found to be reduced by a factor of 5/6 from the result of helicity amplitude approximation.

Abstract:Higher-order anisotropic flows v(4) and v(6) of charged hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are studied in a multiphase transport model that has previously been used successfully for describing the elliptic flow v(2) of identified hadrons in these collisions. We find that the same parton scattering cross section of about 10 mb used in explaining the measured v(2) of charged hadrons can also reproduce the recent data on their v(4) and v(6) from Au+Au collisions at roots=200A GeV. It is further found that v(4) is a more sensitive probe of the initial partonic dynamics in these collisions than v(2). Moreover, higher-order parton anisotropic flows are non-negligible and satisfy the scaling relation v(n,q)(p(T))similar tov(2,q)(n/2)(p(T)), which leads naturally to the observed similar scaling relation among hadron anisotropic flows when the coalescence model is used to describe hadron production from the partonic matter.

Abstract:Multiple parton scattering and induced parton energy loss are studied in deeply inelastic scattering (DIS) off nuclei. The effect of multiple scattering of a highly off-shell quark and the induced parton energy loss is expressed in terms of the modification to the quark fragmentation functions. We derive such modified quark fragmentation functions and their QCD evolution equations in DIS using the generalized factorization of higher twist parton distributions. We consider double-hard and hard-soft parton scattering as well as their interferences in the same framework. The final result, which depends on both the diagonal and off-diagonal twist-four parton distributions in nuclei, demonstrates clearly the Landau–Pomeranchuk–Migdal interference features and predicts a unique nuclear modification of the quark fragmentation functions.

Abstract:The gluonic contribution to the nuclear modification factor R-AA is investigated for central Au + Au collisions at root s = 200 AGeV employing a perturbative QCD-based parton cascade including radiative processes. A flat quenching pattern is found up to transverse momenta of 30 GeV, which is slightly smaller compared with results from the Gyulassy-Levai-Vitev formalism. We demonstrate that the present microscopic transport description provides a challenging means of investigating both jet quenching and a strong buildup of elliptic flow in terms of the same standard perturbative QCD interactions.
Cold Nuclear Matter Effects on Dijet Productions in Relativistic Heavy-Ion Reactions at LHC

Abstract:We investigate the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects on dijet productions in high-energy nuclear collisions at LHC with the next-to-leading order perturbative QCD. The nuclear modifications for dijet angular distributions, dijet invariant mass spectra, dijet transverse momentum spectra and dijet momentum imbalance due to CNM effects are calculated by incorporating EPS, EKS, HKN and DS parametrization sets of parton distributions in nucleus. It is found that dijet angular distributions and dijet momentum imbalance are insensitive to the initial-state CNM effects and thus provide optimal tools to study the final-state hot QGP effects such as jet quenching. On the other hand, the invariant mass spectra and the transverse momentum spectra of dijet are generally enhanced in a wide region of the invariant mass or transverse momentum due to CNM effects with a feature opposite to the expected suppression because of the final-state parton energy loss effect in the QGP. The difference of EPS, EKS, HKN and DS parametrization sets of nuclear parton distribution functions is appreciable for dijet invariant mass spectra and transverse momentum spectra at p+Pb collisions, and becomes more pronounced for those at Pb+Pb reactions.

Abstract:Light cone distribution amplitudes are central to the description of hard exclusive processes with large momentum transfer. They account for the non-perturbative quark and gluon content of a hadron in the infinite momentum frame. Using factorization, hard cross sections can be split into soft partonic distributions convoluted with perturbativly calculable processes. The partonic distributions are inherently non-perturbative. They are currently estimated using experiments, lattice simulations or models. Recently one of us [1] has suggested that the light cone hadronic wavefunctions can be recovered from Euclidean correlators in hadronic states using instead quasi-parton distribution functions through pertinent renormalization in the infinite momentum limit. Preliminary lattice simulations have proven very promising [2, 3]. The purpose of this letter is to explore this construct in two-dimensional scalar and spinor QCD in the non-perturbative 1/Nc expansion. Two-dimensional scalar QCD has a smooth large Nc limit with a confining spectrum [4–6]. In this model the current correlators exhibits many features of fourdimensional QCD in contrast to two-dimensional spinor QCD [7]. In the deep inelastic regime the results exhibit expected scaling laws, and are overall in support of the Feynman partonic picture and the light cone expansion. In this paper, these two models will be used interchangeably to test the concept of the quasi-distributions in a non-perturbative context, as they differ by a minor change in the algebra of the pertinent bosonic operators. Specifically, we construct the quasi-parton distributions for both scalar and spinor QCD in leading and subleading order in 1/Nc and show that they merge with the expected light cone distributions in the infinite momentum limit without additional renormalization. Abstract:As the fundamental theory of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics (QCD) plays a crucial role in precision tests of the standard model (SM) and in the search for new physics. In this article, we provide a brief overview of recent progress in QCD studies relevant to collider physics, focusing on fixed-order calculations and resummation techniques, parton distribution functions and their calculations, as well as their impact on the search for new physics, SM precision tests, and studying the intrinsic properties of hadrons. Based on this, we also discuss the prospects of their applications and intersections with other disciplines in the future.

Abstract:The elliptic flow in heavy ion collisions at RHIC is studied in a multiphase transport model. By converting the strings in the high energy density regions into partons, we find that the final elliptic flow is sensitive to the parton scattering cross section. To reproduce the large elliptic flow observed in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt s=130A$ GeV requires a parton scattering cross section of about 6 mb. We also study the dependence of the elliptic flow on the particle multiplicity, transverse momentum, and particle mass.
