The definition and the criterion of the form invariance of Appell equations are given. This form invariance can lead to a conserved quantity under certain conditions.

Abstract:An alternative concept of the basic invariants is introduced. The Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant theory is extended to obtain a generalized invariant formulation. The formulation is then used to establish four facts: (i) Any invariant for a quantum system can be constructed in terms of the basic invariants. (ii) It is possible to introduce a solution-generating technique by making use of the basic invariants. (iii) The path integral in the generalized invariant formulation reduces to an ordinary integral. (iv) The study of noncyclic evolution of a quantum system reduces explicitly to the study of the cyclic evolution. Finally, phase factors and general solution for the driven generalized time-dependent harmonic oscillator are studied as an illustrative example.

Abstract:According to the principle of relativity, the equations describing the laws of physics should have the same forms in all admissible frames of reference, i.e., form-invariance is an intrinsic property of correct wave equations. However, so far in the design of metamaterials by transformation methods, the form-invariance is always proved by using certain relations between field variables before and after coordinate transformation. The main contribution of this paper is to give general proofs of form-invariance of electromagnetic, sound and elastic wave equations in the global Cartesian coordinate system without using any assumption of the relation between field variables. The results show that electromagnetic wave equations and sound wave equations are intrinsically form-invariant, but traditional elastodynamic equations are not. As a by-product, one can naturally obtain new elastodynamic equations in the time domain that are locally accurate to describe the elastic wave propagation in inhomogeneous media. The validity of these new equations is demonstrated by some numerical simulations of a perfect elastic wave rotator and an approximate elastic wave cloak. These findings are important for solving inverse scattering problems in many fields such as seismology, nondestructive evaluation and metamaterials.

Differential Geometry of Manifolds of Figures

Abstract:Finding the conditions for the invariance of geometric objects under the action of transformation groups is one of the main objects of geometric research. Almost Hermitian structures and structures of the Gray — Hervella classification on smooth manifolds are considered in this paper. All arguments are given using invariant Koszul’s calculus. Conditions for the invariance of the Kähler form in type structures are investigated and it is shown that the Kähler form is covariantly constant with respect to the Lie vector field. Conditions for the invariance of the Riemannian metric under the action of a one-parameter group of diffeomorphisms generated by a Lie vector field are studied. A criterion for the invariance of an almost complex structure with respect to the local group of diffeomorphisms generated by the Lie vector field in the class W4 is proved. Conditions for the invariance of an operator of an almost complex structure, a tensor of a Riemannian metric, are proved. It is established that the invariance of the Riemannian structure g implies the invariance of the operator of an almost complex structure for some class of manifolds according to the Gray — Hervella classification, and conditions for the covariant constancy of the Lie form in certain classes of manifolds of dimensions above four were obtained. It is proved that the Lie form is covariantly constant in some classes of the type of dimensions above four.

Abstract:We postulate the applicability of the general form-invariance principle in special relativity. It is shown that this principle holds in classical mechanics. Some examples of transformations between the reference frames which satisfy this principle are considered. A new transformation is proposed for a transition from a uniformly rotating reference frame to a reference frame whose origin is shifted from the rotation axis. Another possible formulation of this principle is given for the case of stationary rigid reference frames which differ from one another only by the position of the origin.

On the Invariance of Governing Equations of Current Nonlocal Theories of Elasticity under Coordinate Transformation and Displacement Gauge Change

Abstract:The invariance of elastodynamic wave equations under coordinate transformations provides a way to achieve elastic wave cloaking. Under general coordinate transformations, it has been proved that the conventional elastodynamic wave equation (the Navier equation) changes its form. In addition to the conventional Navier equation, various nonlocal theories of elasticity have been developed to encompass more general descriptions of behaviour of solids. Whether the forms of the governing equations of these nonlocal theories of elasticity remain invariant under coordinate transformations has not been investigated. In this note, we examine the form-invariance of current nonlocal theories of elasticity, including the Mindlin 1964 theory, the strain gradient theory, the stress gradient theory, the peridynamic theory, the Kunin 1982 theory, the Eringen 1983 theory, and the Kröner 1967 theory under coordinate transformation and displacement gauge change. These theories are classified into three types and their invariance is examined in terms of three criteria. It is found that only the peridynamic theory, the Kunin 1982 theory, and the Eringen 1983 theory satisfy form-invariance. We further show that the operations of degeneration and a general coordinate transformation on nonlocal elasticity are not communicative. The results shed new light on the properties of the nonlocal theories of elasticity.
On Variational Formulas of a Conformally Invariant Functional

Abstract:We consider a conformally invariant functional of the space of Riemannian metrics, compute its first variational formula and obtain some examples of its critical point. Then we compute the second variation of the conformally invariant functional about the above examples and get some stability results. These results extend theorems of Kobayashi (J Math Soc Jpn 37:373–389, 1985).

Abstract:The classical nonholomic equations for a mechanical system subject to linear nonintegrable constraints are presented in Section 2. These are displayed in a geodesic form by the use of a suitable covariant derivative (due to Synge) in Section 3. We then express the Frobenius integrability of the constraint distribution by means of a zero torsion condition for the above Synge connection. Section 4 provides a self-contained derivation from a nonholonomic variational problem of the equations of motion for nonholonomic systems. These equations, which are nonequivalent to the previous ones, were first developed by Arnold and Kozlov and called vakonomic (vak) equations. Sections 5 and 6 are concerned with a geometrical interpretation of the terms occurring in the right-hand side of the vak equations. Under quite general assumptions, these latter can be described in terms of the curvature of an Ehresmann (local) connection whose horizontal subspace is precisely the constraint distribution. Furthermore, by introducing a suitable Lie group action on the configuration manifold, the local Ehresmann connection can be made into a global one which coincides with the mechanical connection of Smale-Marsden. Section 7 gives a motivation, in terms of Hopf-Rinow and Ambrose-Singer theorems, for the nonclassical requirement of the assignment of the reaction forces' values in the initial kinematical state in vakonomic mechanics. Section 8 develops a fundamental approach to the description of holonomic, i.e. geometrical constraints. We describe the reaction forces by using the Poincaré dual (a class of closed 1-forms) of the orientable constraint submanifold. As an instance of the construction developed in Sections 5 and 6, we consider in Section 9 the disk rolling without sliding on the plane.

Form Invariance of Raychaudhuri equation in the presence of Inflaton-type fields

Abstract:We show that the Raychaudhuri equation remains form invariant for certain solutions of scalar fields $\phi$ whose Lagrangian is non-canonical and of the form $\mathcal{L}(X,\phi)=-V(\phi)F(X)$, with $X=\frac{1}{2} g_{\mu\nu} \nabla^{\mu}\phi \nabla^{\nu} \phi$ and $V(\phi)$ the potential. Solutions exist for both homogeneous and inhomogeneous fields that are like inflatons. Certain recent observations indicate that the cosmos is inhomogeneous and thus our results are in sync with the latest observations. So the Raychaudhuri equation can accommodate primordial inhomogeneities as well as cosmologically relevant scenarios.

Abstract:It is well known that classical linear elasticity equations are not form-invariant under local transformations. This is intrinsically related to the inhomogeneity of elastic media. However, the reported new linear elasticity equations for inhomogeneous media may appear in different forms. This paper tries to clarify this issue by investigating the form-invariance of the Lagrangian under local temporal or spatial gauge transformations. In this way, these new equations in different forms can be easily understood as the results from different choices of gauge fixing schemes. It recommends to choose appropriate gauges with clear physical meanings to simplify calculations.

Abstract:In this paper, and on the basis of the equivalent eigenstrain principle, a fundamental formulation for inhomogeneous inclusion problems is proposed, which is to transform the inhomogeneous inclusion problems into auxiliary equivalent homogenous inclusion problems. Then, the analysis, which is based on the equivalent homogenous inclusions, would significantly reduce the workload and would enable the analytical solutions that are possible for a series of inhomogeneous inclusion problems. It also provides a feasible way to evaluate the effective properties of composite materials in terms of their equivalent homogenous materials. This formulation allows for solving the problems: (i) With an arbitrarily connected and shaped inhomogeneous inclusion; (ii) Under an arbitrary internal load by means of the nonuniform eigenstrain distribution; and (iii) With any kind of external load, such as singularity, uniform far field, and so on. To demonstrate the implementation of the formulation, an oblate inclusion that interacts with a dilatational eigenstrain nucleus is analyzed, and an explicit solution is obtained. The fundamental formulation that is introduced here will find application in the mechanics of composites, inclusions, phase transformation, plasticity, fractures, etc.

Abstract:Bagderina \cite{Bagderina2013} solved the equivalence problem for a family of scalar second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with cubic nonlinearity in the first-order derivative, via point transformations. However, the question is open for the general class $y''=f(x,y,y')$ which is not cubic in the first-order derivative. We utilize Lie's infinitesimal method to study the differential invariants of this general class under an arbitrary point equivalence transformations. All fifth order differential invariants and the invariant differentiation operators are determined. As an application, invariant description of all the canonical forms in the complex plane for second-order ODEs $y''=f(x,y,y')$ where both of the two Tress\'e relative invariants are non-zero is provided.

Abstract:We present a generalization of Lie's method for finding the group invariant solutions to a system of partial differential equations. Our generalization relaxes the standard transversality assumption and encompasses the common situation where the reduced differential equations for the group invariant solutions involve both fewer dependent and independent variables. The theoretical basis for our method is provided by a general existence theorem for the invariant sections, both local and global, of a bundle on which a finite dimensional Lie group acts. A simple and natural extension of our characterization of invariant sections leads to an intrinsic characterization of the reduced equations for the group invariant solutions for a system of differential equations. The characterization of both the invariant sections and the reduced equations are summarized schematically by the kinematic and dynamic reduction diagrams and are illustrated by a number of examples from fluid mechanics, harmonic maps, and general relativity. This work also provides the theoretical foundations for a further detailed study of the reduced equations for group invariant solutions.

Abstract:We apply a novel method for the equivalence group and its infinitesimal generators to the investigation of invariants of linear ordinary differential equations. First, a comparative study of this method is illustrated by an example. Next, the method is used to obtain the invariants of low order linear ordinary differential equations, and the structure invariance group for an arbitrary order of these equations. Other properties of these equations are also discussed, including the exact number of their invariants.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with infinitesimally constrained equilibrium states, which are nonequilibrium states and infinitesimally close to equilibrium states. The corresponding thermodynamics is established in this paper within the thermodynamic framework of Rice (1971, "Inelastic Constitutive Relations for Solids: An Internal Variable Theory and Its Application to Metal Plasticity," J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 19, pp. 433-455). It is shown that the thermodynamics of infinitesimally constrained equilibrium states belongs to linear irreversible thermodynamics. The coefficient matrix is the Hessian matrix of the flow potential function at the equilibrium state. The process of a state change induced by an infinitesimal stress increment in time-independent plasticity can be viewed as a sequence of infinitesimally constrained equilibrium states. The thermodynamic counterpart of yield functions are flow potential functions, and their convexity is required by intrinsic dissipation inequality. Drucker and Il'yushin's inequalities are not essential thermodynamic requirements.

Abstract:The invariant is one of central topics in science, technology and engineering. The differential invariant is essential in understanding or describing some important phenomena or procedures in mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology or computer science etc. The derivation of differential invariants is usually difficult or complicated. This paper reports a discovery that under the affine transform, differential invariants have similar structures with moment invariants up to a scalar function of transform parameters. If moment invariants are known, relative differential invariants can be obtained by the substitution of moments by derivatives with the same order. Whereas moment invariants can be calculated by multiple integrals, this method provides a simple way to derive differential invariants without the need to resolve any equation system. Since the definition of moments on different manifolds or in different dimension of spaces is well established, differential invariants on or in them will also be well defined. Considering that moments have a strong background in mathematics and physics, this technique offers a new view angle to the inner structure of invariants. Projective differential invariants can also be found in this way with a screening process.

Abstract:Nonholonomic systems are, so to speak, mechanical systems with a prescribed restriction on the velocities. A virtual nonholonomic constraint is a controlled invariant distribution associated with an affine connection mechanical control system. A Riemannian homogeneous space is, a Riemannian manifold that looks the same everywhere, as you move through it by the action of a Lie group. These Riemannian manifolds are not necessarily Lie groups themselves, but nonetheless possess certain symmetries and invariances that allow for similar results to be obtained. In this work, we introduce the notion of virtual constraint on Riemannian homogeneous spaces in a geometric framework which is a generalization of the classical controlled invariant distribution setting and we show the existence and uniqueness of a control law preserving the invariant distribution. Moreover we characterize the closed-loop dynamics obtained using the unique control law in terms of an affine connection. We illustrate the theory with new examples of nonholonomic control systems inspired by robotics applications.

Abstract:In this article we study an integral invariant which obstructs the existence on a compact complex manifold of a volume form with the determinant of its Ricci form proportional to itself, in particular obstructs the existence of a Kähler-Einstein metric, and has been studied since 1980s. We study this invariant from the view point of locally conformally Kähler geometry. We first see that we can define an integral invariant for coverings of compact complex manifolds with automorphic volume forms. This situation typically occurs for locally conformally Kähler manifolds. Secondly, we see that this invariant coincides with the former one. We also show that the invariant vanishes for any compact Vaisman manifold.
