Abstract:The stability equation of interface of two-phase jet and the corresponding particle gas disturbance velocity ratio equation are derived by means of the phase-coupled model. The stability curves of interface of two-phase jet far different particle properties and the corresponding particle-gas disturbance velocity ratio curves are given out through numerical computation. Further, several important conclusions on effect of particle property on growth and propagation of disturbance of interface of two-phase jet and particle disturbance property are presented on the basis of analyses of the obtained stability curves and particle-gas disturbance velocity ratio curves. These important conclusions can play a guiding role in studying development of two-phase jet and executing artificial controls over it in project practice.

Abstract:By means of the potential theory, the continuous medium coupling model is adopted to analyze the stability of dense gas particle two phase jets and the concerning stability control equation is obtained. The frequency curves for different pressure coupling parameters, particle volume fractions and equivalent Stokes numbers are got through numerical computation. On the basis of analyses of the obtained frequency curves, the conclusions on effect of particles′ properties on the two phase jets are presented in detail. These conclusions play a theoretically guiding role in practical controly over dense two phase jets.

Abstract:The stability equation of moving jet containing non - uniformly distributed particle under large Reynolds number is derived out by means of the phase - coupling model. The amplification factor curves and wave speed curves of two - phase jet for particle non - uniform distribution are given out through numerical computation. Abstract:In a gas-solid fluidized bed, volatile liquid injection results in complex flow behaviors in the spray zone. To characterize the liquid existence forms (droplets and liquid films) and fluidization properties in the volatile spray zone, a mesoscale-theory based volatile spray zone model is developed with the consideration of hydrodynamics, heat transfer, and mass transfer. A new energy-based stability condition is established according to two competition and coordination relationships, consisting of the energy dissipation based on the liquid-solid interface change and suspension and transporting of particles. The modeling results agree well with the experimental bed temperature as well as void fraction data, and show that the variation of liquid existence forms is dependent on the ratio of different energy consumption rates under the stability condition. Moreover, the gas-solid drag coefficient in the volatile spray zone is modified. Simulation results also reasonably describe the bed pressure drop fluctuation and particle velocity distribution.

Abstract:The equation of the suspension-gas non-streamwise complex disturbance velocity ratio near the injection area of moving jet was theoretically derived by using a phase-coupled model and stability theory. Then the ratio curves were obtained by the finite difference method based on the asymptotic method and the Euler conservative difference scheme. Analysis of the curves yielded conclusions on the disturbance properties of suspensions and effects of the natures of the flow-field and the properties of the suspensions on the suspensions ability to track the disturbed gas flow are presented in this paper.

Abstract:Evolution of vortex structures in round jet was simulated with a three-dimensional discrete vortex filament method. The motion of the particles was described by a Lagrangian equation and the counteraction of particles on the flow was taken into account by using a modified velocity model. It is indicated that in two-phase jet flow the introduced particles restrain the crosswise dispersion of jet shear layer and mergence of vortex structures. With the increase of St number, the influence of flow on particles motion is decreased, but the counteraction of particles on the flow is increased. The difference of flow field obtained with two models, one-way coupling model and two-way coupling model, is greater than that of particles trajectories.

Abstract:The temporal instability of a particle-laden jet was investigated numerically which took into consideration the parametric effects of jet parameter, B, jet Reynolds number, Rej, particle mass loading, Z and Stokes number, St. The linear stability theory was used to derive the instability equations of a viscous particle-laden jet flow. The single-phase instability of a top-hat jet was then calculated and compared with the available analytical theories. The numerical results agree well with the analytical results for both the axisymmetric (n=0) and first azimuthal (n=1) modes. The results show that the first azimuthal mode disturbance is usually more unstable than that of the axisymmetric mode. But the axisymmetric mode disturbance can be more unstable when Z is high enough (i.e., Z⩾0.1). The higher B and Rej are, the more unstable the particle-laden jet will be. The existence of particles enhances the flow stability. With the increasing of Z, the jet flow will grow more stable. The inviscid single-phase jet is the most unstable. The wave amplification, ci first decreases with the increasing of St and then increases afterwards. There exist certain values of St, at which the jet is the most stable.

Abstract:By employing potential theory, the expressions of the perturbation growth rate varying with radial perturbation wavenumbers are derived for a swirling jet shear layer containing suspended solid particles under a non-axisymmetric perturbation. Modified Rayleigh criterion for the stability of this flow is presented. Based on the results obtained under different particle mass densities, particle-gas perturbation velocity ratios, particle-gas perturbation velocity phase differences and Stokes numbers, several important conclusions on the effect of particles on the stability of a swirling jet shear layer are provided. These conclusions are useful for controls of a swirling jet flow and its subsequent development.

Abstract:Point-particle direct numerical simulations have been employed to quantify the turbulence modulation and particle responses in a turbulent particle-laden jet in the two-way coupled regime with an inlet Reynolds number based on bulk velocity and jet diameter (D-j) of similar to 10000. The investigation focuses on three cases with inlet bulk Stokes numbers of 0.3, 1.4 and 11.2. Special care is taken to account for the particle-gas slip velocity and non-uniform particle concentrations at the nozzle outlet, enabling a reasonable prediction of particle velocity and concentration fields. Turbulence modulation is quantified by the variation of the gas-phase turbulent kinetic energy (TKE). The presence of the particle phase is found to damp the gas-phase TKE in the near-field region within 5D(j) from the inlet but subsequently increases the TKE in the intermediate region of (5-20)D-j. An analysis of the gas-phase TKE transport equation reveals that the direct impact of the particle phase is to dissipate TKE via the particle-induced source term. However, the finite inertia of the particle phase affects the gas-phase velocity gradients, which indirectly affects the TKE production and dissipation, leading to the observed TKE attenuation and enhancement. Particle response to the gas-phase flow is quantified. Particles are found to exhibit notably stronger response to the gas-phase axial velocity than to the radial velocity. A new dimensionless figure is presented that collapses both the axial and radial components of the particle response as a function of the local Stokes number based on their respective integral length scales.

Abstract:Heavy and buoyant particle dispersion in the turbulent mixing layer was investigated numerically using a two-phase flow discrete vortex modelling. It was revealed from the modelling that inclusion of two-way momentum coupling is essential for properly modelling heavy particle dispersive transport in turbulent free shear flows. For heavy particles with small Stokes numbers, the dispersion is predominated by the large-scale vortex structures and they exert small influence on the carrier fluid flow. Heavy particles with large St directionally align along the braid region between the neighbouring vortices. However, the lateral dispersion of particles of large St is smaller than that of particles of small St.

Abstract:By considering the effect of suspended solid particles in the ordinary equations for two-dimension inviscid incompressible mixing layer, the Rayleigh equation and the modified Rayleigh equation are obtained. And then, by solving the corresponding eigen-value equations with numerical computational method, the relation curves between perturbation frequency and spacial growth rate of the mixing layer for the varying particle loading, ratio of particle velocity to fluid velocity and Stokes number are got. Sever al important conclusions on the effect of suspended solid particles on unstability of the mixing layer are presented in the end by analyzing all the relation curves.

Abstract:The stability of the flow with suspended solid particles has been examined by analyzing the expanded Orr-Sommerfeld equation. A series of numerical simulations varying particle size, particle loading, particle density and ratio of particle velocity to fluid velocity have been conducted. The results show that smaller particles and lighter particles will make instability easier. Increasing ratio of particle velocity to fluid velocity can be found to be a destabilizing mechanism. The instability is enhanced as the particle loading increases.

Abstract:The interactions between the vortex and the particles in Two-dimensional gas-solid mixing layer are investigated with two-way coupling model on the assumption that the flow around each particle is quasi-steady Stokesian locally and the average particle fraction is very low so that the interactions of the particles can be neglected. The spectral method is adopted to solve the Navier-stokes equation and each particle is traced with Lagrange method. The results indicate that the Stokes number is still an important parameter but not the only one in particle load flow if the fluid-particle interaction is considered, the particle fraction, relative density and size also act important roles. Particles impede the vortex pairing and the development of the flow. The dispersion of particles is similar to the results of one-way coupling model, but the centrifugal tendency of relative large Stokes number particle is delayed and weaken.

Abstract:A weakly non-linear stability analysis of two phase flow in the Blasius boundary layer has been carried out. Two mathematical models have been established based on the perturbation shape preserved assumption and linear stability model of two phase flow proposed by Stuart [On the non-linear mechanics of hydrodynamic stability, J. Fluid Mech. 4 (1958) 1–21] and Saffman [On the stability of laminar flow of dusty gas, J. Fluid Mech. 13 (1962) 120–128], respectively. The perturbation model and the perturbation energy balance equation are solved numerically with Chebyshev spectral method and artificial boundary condition. The numerical program adopted in the present study is verified by comparison with former works. The results show that the non-linear interaction between mean flow and perturbation reduces the growth rate of perturbation, while the non-linear interaction between particle phase and gas phase increases the growth rate of perturbation amplitude. The distortion of the mean flow caused by the Reynolds stress modifies the rate of transfer of energy from the mean flow to disturbance. The existence of particle alleviates the distortedness. The result also indicates that the weakly non-linear stability theory is consistent to linear stability theory, and the addition of fine and coarse particles reduces and increases the critical Reynolds number.
Weakly Nonlinear Stability Of Moving Jet Of Fiber Suspension

Abstract:The phase-coupled model was, used to derive the weakly nonlinear stability equation of moving inviscid Top-Hat jet with fiber suspensions. It is found that the fibers make the second-order wave velocity and amplification factors of the asymmetric disturbance with small wave number increase, and the amplification factors of axisymmetric disturbance as well as the amplification factors of asymmetric disturbance with large wave number decrease. The above effects become more obvious with the increase of fiber volume fraction.

Abstract:Purpose – The present work is devoted to the numerical study of the stability of shallow jet. The effects of important parameters on the stability behavior for large scale shallow jets are considered and investigated. Connections between the stability theory and observed features reported in the literature are emphasized. The paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach – A linear stability analysis of shallow jet incorporating the effects of bottom topography, bed friction and viscosity has been carried out by using the shallow water stability equation derived from the depth averaged shallow water equations in conjunction with both Chézy and Manning resistance formulae. Effects of the following main factors on the stability of shallow water jets are examined: Rossby number, bottom friction number, Reynolds number, topographic parameters, base velocity profile and resistance model. Special attention has been paid to the Coriolis effects on the jet stability by limiting the rotation number in the range of Ro∈[0, 1.0]. Findings – It is found that the Rossby number may either amplify or attenuate the growth of the flow instability depending on the values of the topographic parameters. There is a regime where the near cancellation of Coriolis effects due to other relevant parameters influences is responsible for enhancement of stability. The instability can be suppressed by the bottom friction when the bottom friction number is large enough. The amplification rate may become sensitive to the relatively small Reynolds number. The stability region using the Manning formula is larger than that using the Chézy formula. The combination of these effects may stabilize or destabilize the shallow jet flow. These results of the stability analysis are compared with those from the literature. Originality/value – Results of linear stability analysis on shallow jets along roughness bottom bed are presented. Different from the previous studies, this paper includes the effects of bottom topography, Rossby number, Reynolds number, resistance formula and bed friction. It is found that the influence of Reynolds number on the stability of the jet is notable for relative small value. Therefore, it is important to experimental investigators that the viscosity should be considered with comparison to the results from inviscid assumption. In contrast with the classical analysis, the use of multi-parameters of the base velocity and topographic profile gives an extension to the jet stability analysis. To characterize the large scale motion, besides the bottom friction as proposed in the related literature, the Reynolds number Re, Rossby number Ro, the topographic parameters and parameters controlling base velocity profile may also be important to the stability analysis of shallow jet flows.

Abstract:In this paper, the three-dimensional vortex filament method was used to simulate the evolution of vortex structures in the axisymmetric round jet. The results agree well with the ones given by Chung and Troutt. Then one-coupling model was employed to calculate the particle motion based on the computed flows. The results show that the particle motion is affected by flows obviously at the case of particle number St≪1 and negligibly at St≫1, particles distribute around the vortex structures uniformly at St ∼ 1. When perturbations with wavenumber 5 are introduced to vortex rings, particles disperse wider along radial direction, which conforms to the experimental results. The degree of particle dispersion is in the direct ratio to the amplitude of perturbation. The conclusions given in the paper are useful to the practice usage.
Instability of a Low Viscosity Jet Emerging into a High Viscosity Medium: Linear Stability Analysis

Abstract:Many natural and engineering systems involve the mixing of two fluid streams, in which the effects of density and viscosity gradients play important roles in determining flow stability. We perform linear stability calculations for a jet emerging into an ambient medium of a different viscosity but the same density. These calculations are intended to isolate the effects of viscosity variation alone. We conduct a systematic study of the effect of ambient-to-jet viscosity ratio, jet Reynolds number and the velocity profile specified by the shear layer thickness, the thickness over which the viscosity change occurs, and radial shifts in velocity profiles, on the growth of axisymmetric and helical modes. Additional terms in the disturbance kinetic energy equation that represent the coupling between the velocity fluctuations and the viscosity field are shown to be responsible for the additional destabilization. Radial shifts in velocity profile that represent real effects likely to be encountered in experiments are shown to be strongly destabilizing. In all cases, the temporal growth rates of axisymmetric and helical mode are very close, except at low Reynolds numbers. Spatio-temporal analysis in the complex wavenumber plane suggests that for sufficiently large ambient viscosity, low-viscosity jets become absolutely unstable. Over a wide range of parameters, two modes of absolute instability exist simultaneously, with an axisymmetric mode predicted to dominate a helical mode. Over a certain narrower space, the helical mode dominates. The transition boundary for absolute/convective instability is compared with recent experiments, and the results are found to in reasonable agreement for the transition of the helical mode, when velocity profiles are used that correspond to the similarity solution for development of the boundary layer under a spatially variable viscosity.

Abstract:In order to explore the turbulence modulation by cylindrical particles, the equation describing the probability density functions for the particle orientation, and the equations of Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation rate with additional terms of particles are used and solved numerically in a round jet flow. The turbulence modulation at different axial distances from the nozzle exit in the initial region is given, and the effects of particle concentration, particle aspect ratio and Reynolds number on the mean streamwise velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulent viscosity are analyzed for the particle mass concentrations ranged from 0 to 0.01%, Reynolds number ranged from 4000 to 13000, and particle aspect ratio ranged from 5 to 35. The results show that the critical parameter used to explain the increase or decrease of turbulent intensity caused by the addition of spherical particles is not suitable to explain the case of cylindrical particles. The particles injected in the flow have the effect of delaying the centerline mean axial velocity decay with increasing axial distance. This phenomenon is more obvious in the case of high particle concentration. The turbulence intensity enhancement caused by cylindrical particles is less downstream than near the nozzle exit. The cylindrical particle injection will enhance the turbulence intensity, and the degree of enhancement is position dependent and directly proportional to the particle concentration, Reynolds number and particle aspect ratio.

Abstract:The discrete vortex method for gas flow and the moment method coupled with a unimodal lognormal particle size distribution were used to simulate the nanoparticle coagulation and dispersion in a round jet. The results show that the interface of the jet region and the outside rolls up to form coherent structures, which alters the particle concentrations and enhances the particle coagulation. The jet region of the particles mixture and the number of different particle sizes increase with increasing of the time, however, the number concentration of particles decreases in the jet region while increasing at its outside. The coherent structures play an important role in enhancing the particle coagulation and dispersion along the radial direction of jet, and make the particles disperse non-uniformly along the stream direction of jet. As the Schmidt number increases, the jet region of mixture of particles becomes narrower, and polydispersity turns unobvious, however, the particle number concentration grows accordingly. The gradient in particle size and the standard deviation of the particle size distribution increase along the radial direction of jet with increasing of the Damkohler number.
