Abstract:The effect of training strain, deformation temperature and number of training cycles on the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) and its stability have been investigated systematically in a Ti 46.3 N1 44.7 Nb 9 (at%) wide hysteresis shape memory alloy (SMA). The experimental results indicate that two-way shape memory strain increases with increasing the training strain up to 14.5% and then decreases with further increasing the training strain. When the training strain is less than 12%, the two-way shape memory strain increases with the increase of number of training cycles in the Ti 46.3 Ni 44.7 Nb 9 alloy deformed at the room temperature. Compared with TiNi binary alloy, the TWSME is smaller and the training strain to get the maximum TWSME is larger in the Ti-Ni-Nb alloy due to the deformation of β-Nb soft particles during training. However, the Ti-Ni-Nb alloy exhibits excellent stability of TWSME during the thermal cycling.

Abstract:The two-way shape memory effect(TWSME) in a Ti_(36)Ni_(49)Hf_(15) high temperature shape memory alloy(SMA) was systematically studied by bending tests. In the TiNiHf alloy, the martensite deformation is an effective method to get two-way shape memory effect even with a small deformation strain. The results indicate that the internal stress field formed by the bending deformation is in the direction of the preferentially oriented martensite variants formed during the bending deformation. Upon cooling the preferentially oriented martensite variants form under such an oriented stress field, which should be responsible for the generation of the two-way shape memory effect. Proper training process benefits the formation of the oriented stress field, resulting in the improvement of the two-way shape memory effect. A maximum TWSME of 0.88% is obtained in the present alloy.

Abstract:The two-way shape memory effect in a Ti36Ni49Hf15 high temperature shape memory alloy (SMA) has been systematically studied by bending tests. In the TiNiHf alloy, the martensite deformation is an effective method to get two-way shape memory effect even with a small deformation strain. When the TiNiHf alloy is deformed at a full martensite state, the deformation mechanism is the martensite orientation accompanied by the dislocation slip. The experimental results indicated that the internal stress field formed by the bending deformation is in the directions of the preferentially oriented martensite variants formed during the bending deformation. Upon cooling the preferentially oriented martensite variants form under such an oriented stress field, which should be responsible for the generation of the two-way shape memory effect. Proper training process and aging benefit the formation of the oriented stress field, resulting in the improvement of the two-way shape memory effect. When the training strain is 7.1% and the training temperature is room temperature, a two-way shape memory strain of 0.88% is obtained in the Ti36Ni49Hf15 alloy. This value is the maximum two-way shape memory strain in the TiNi-based high temperature SMAs so far. In comparison with the TiNi alloy, the TiNiHf high temperature SMA shows the two-way shape memory effect with the relative poor stability due to the lower strength of martensite.

Abstract:This work presents a study of the development of the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) by themomechanical training and its degradation due to working cycles in a shape memory alloys (SMAs) spring. A TWSME extension spring that could extend upon heating and contract upon cooling was obtained by constrained annealing and thermomechanical training. A stable TWSME recovery rate can reach 60–70% after training for 200 cycles. The investigation showed that constrained annealing temperature and the thermomechanical training procedure had a great effect on the TWSME. After 1000 working cycles, the TWSME recovery rate still maintained at 45% stably. The effect of the thermomechanical training on transformation characters was also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The inverse martensitic transformation temperatures increased and martensitic transformation temperatures decreased with increasing thermomechanical training cycles, which was attributed to the dislocations introduced into the TiNi shape memory alloys.

Abstract:Two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) was introduced in a narrow hysteresis TiNiCu shape memory alloy spring by thermomechanical training after a constrained annealing heat treatment. A TWSME extension spring that can extend while heating and contract while cooling using the TiNiCu shape memory alloy was obtained. The result showed that the TWSME recovery rate of the extension spring could be high—up to 58% when thermomechanical training reached 225 cycles after annealing on the constrained condition at 500 °C for 1 h. The TWSME recovery rate still maintains 42% when it was thermally cycled 1100 times. The effect of different heat treatment conditions on TWSME of the springs was also researched. The transformation temperatures and hysteresis were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) during training transformation.

Abstract:Two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) was introduced in a narrow hysteresis TiNiCu shape memory alloy spring by thermomechnical training after heat treatment. The TWSME spring can contract upon heating and extend upon cooling. The effect of heat treatment on the TWSME of the shape memory alloy springs has been investigated. The results showed that the TWSME recovery rate of the spring could be high up to 58% after being thermomechnical trained 75 cycles for the specimen heat treated at 500°C for 1 h. The transformation temperatures were also investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) during thermomechanical training. The electrothermal driving characteristics of the TWSME springs were also investigated with alternating current density of 2.55–17.8 A/mm2. It is found that the time response (the time interval between the start and the end of the spring's shape change) and the maximum contraction rate were greatly depended on the magnitude of the electrical current density.

Abstract:The two-way shape memory effect in a Ti–18.5Zr–10Nb–3.5Ta high-temperature shape memory alloy was investigated. X-ray diffraction measurement shows that the alloy is composed of orthorhombic α″-martensite. ω phase is not found in Ti–18.5Zr–10Nb–3.5Ta alloy due to the suppressing effect of Ta element. The α″-martensite laths are found in the transmission electron microscope observation; after the bending deformation, there appear a lot of dislocations. The alloy exhibits a shape memory strain of 3.8% and a high reverse martensite transformation start temperature of 464 K. The maximum two-way shape memory strain of 1.2% is obtained in the alloy with the pre-bending training strain of 10%. The mechanism can be ascribed to the effect of internal stress field caused by dislocations.

Abstract:Two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) has wide application prospect in the field of lightweight actuators. In the present study, an excellent TWSME with large magnitude and small cyclic degradation of NiTi wires is achieved by combining martensite deformation and nanocrystallization. The wires attain a maximum of 7.37% TWSME strain after pre-deformed to 11% and maintain a stable strain of 6.88% after 20 cycles. Microstructural characterization reveals that the excellent TWSME originates from both the dislocation structures induced by martensite deformation and nanocrystalline strengthened matrix. On one hand, the former provides adequate oriented stress field. On the other hand, the latter guarantees the availability of high-volume fraction of preferentially oriented martensite variations in subsequent thermal cycles through suppressing the formation of deformation twins, which are frequently discussed in coarse-grain NiTi.

Abstract:The two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) induced by martensite deformation and the stabilization of martensite of a Ti36Ni49Hf15 high temperature shape memory alloy (SMA) have been investigated. The experimental results indicated that the martensite deformation is an effective method to get TWSME in the Ti36Ni49Hf15 alloy even with a small deformation strain. During martensite deformation the martensite reorientation and the dislocation slip occur simultaneously. Thus an internal oriented stress field is easily created to induce the TWSME. The TWSME of the Ti36Ni49Hf15 alloy shows poor stability during the subsequent thermal cycling. In addition, the martensite stabilization is caused by the martensite deformation. The variation of the elastic and irreversible energies should be responsible for this.

Abstract:The two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) of polycrystalline Ni54Mn25Ga21-xGdx alloys is investigated. The largest TWSME value (2.9%) without training is observed in Ni54Mn25Ga20.7Gd0.3 alloy due to a small amount of Gd(Ni,Mn)(4)Ga phase formation, and this value increases to 3.5% after thermomechanical training. The TWSME rapidly decreases over the first few thermal cycles, and then slowly reaches a stable value as the number of cycles increases further. Abstract:The temperature memory effect (TME) phenomenon of Ni47Ti44Nb9 wide hysteresis shape memory alloy was studied. It was found that TME occurred during the reverse transformation for the thermally-induced martensite (TIM) but not for the stress-induced martensite after incomplete transformation cycling. The reverse transformation temperature interval of TIM can be doubly broadened after 10 incomplete transformation cycles.

Abstract:In this article, the effect of thermomechanical training temperature on the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) of TiNiCu and TiNi alloys springs were investigated. The results showed that when the springs were thermomechanical-trained at pure martensite, there is an increase of the recovery rate to a saturated value, the maximum recovery rate was about 55% and 45% for TiNiCu and TiNi alloys, respectively. As the springs were thermomechanical-trained at pure austensite and martensite+austensite, there is an increase of the recovery rate to a maximum value and decreased with ongoing training after having passed the maximum value and the maximum TWSME recovery rate is less than that of the shape memory alloys spring-trained at pure martensite. Dislocations generated by martensite reorientation were effective in developing two-way memory effect. Since the amount of the stress-induced martensite variants is less than that of thermal-induced martensite variants, thus, the recovery rate showed a different rule with increasing thermomechanical training cycles at different training temperature.

Abstract:The focus of this study is the influence of thermomechanical training on martensite, austenite and martensite+austenite and the influences of annealing and thermomechanical training on the two-way shape memory effect of TiNiCu alloys. The results showed that when the TiNiCu springs are thermomechanically trained at martensite. there is an increase of the recovery rate to a saturated value; when the TiNiCu springs are thermomechanically trained at austenite and martensite+austenite, there is an increase of the recovery rate to a maximum value and then it decreases with ongoing training. With increasing annealing temperature, the maximum recovery rate increases first then decreases. Dislocations generated by martensite reorientation are effective in developing two-way memory effect. The magnitude of thermo-induced or stress-induced martensite variants are different, so that the magnitude of the dislocations are different too. Abstract:The temperature memory effect (TME) has been investigated in Ti49.5Ni34.5Cu11.5Pd4.5 alloy with a narrow hysteresis. The TME can be enhanced through multiple partial thermal cycling (TME training). The TME obtained by training is repeatable and hard to wipe out, which can be detected even after 1000 following complete thermal cycles. A difference in the dislocation density between different martensite regions is introduced during training, which results in the TME. It increases with increasing training cycles, and graduates away slowly because of the rare introduced dislocations during the following complete thermal cycles, leading to the repeatable TME.

Abstract:The shape memory properties have been studied in a Ti36Ni49Hf15 high temperature shape memory alloy (SMA) by bending tests. The shape memory effect (SME) of the alloy is closely related to the deformation condition. It shows about 3% completely reversible strain when the TiNiHf alloy is deformed at the room temperature. The shape recovery ratio is constant at 92% when the deformation temperature is below 457 K, then rapidly decreases to zero above 590 K for the specimen deformed to 4.5%. Obvious two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) is obtained in the Ti36Ni49Hf15 alloy aged at 973 K for various hours. As the aging time further increases, the TWSME decreases. Moreover, TWSME in the aged Ti36Ni49Hf15 alloy is unstable and decreases rapidly after several thermal cycles.

Abstract:It has been shown that TiNiNb shape memory alloys exhibit a wide transformation hysteresis compared to TiNi binary alloys (about 145°C versus 30°C). This wide hysteresis has important engineering utility. The present paper was undertaken to review of the microstructure. mechanical behavior, deformation-induced martensitic transformation and the effect of deformation on the stability of martensite and its reverse transformation in TiNiNb alloys. Simultaneously, the strain recovery characteristic and interface structure of martensite were explained, and the mechanism for increasing martensite stability by deformation was discussed. In addition, the microstructure and interface structure inside the stress-induced martensite (SIM) variants were evaluated. It is found that the morphology and substructure of SIM depend on deformation condition. The tensile deformation at parent phase condition has great influence on the substructure and interface structure of SIM variants. The most distinctive substructural feature of the stress-induced martensite is the presence of the various secondary twins. Based on the analysis of the stability and shape memory effect of various kinds of martensite, the concept of stability of deformed stress-induced martensite was proposed and explained by the mechanism for the formation of several secondary deformation twins.

Abstract:The one-way shape memory effect of the newly-developed TiNi-Hf high temperature shape memory alloys has been investigated. The results of the study show that TiNi-Hf high temperature alloys possess a relatively high shape memory effect. All the alloys, even those with an Hf content as high as 30at%, exhibit complete strain recovery behavior. However, as the Hf content increases, the fully reversible strain of the alloys decreases. The increase of the second phase as the Hf content increases is the primary reason for the deterioration of the shape memory effect and ductility. The shape memory properties also deteriorate as the deformation temperature increases.

Abstract:The effects of aging and thermo-mechanical training on the two-way shape memory effect (TWSME) of a NiAl-Fe alloy have been investigated. It was found that the two-way shape memory property of NiAl-Fe alloy was increased obviously after training. The two-way shape recovery of NiAl-Fe specimens aged at 400 degreesC for 1 hour was higher than that of specimens without aging, and kept unchanged up to 1x10(3) heating-cooling cycles. The fatigue life of NiAl-Fe specimens aged at 400 degreesC for 1 hour showing TWSME was more than 1x103 cycles. The mechanisms for the effects of thermomechanical training, as well as aging precipitates on the TWSME have also been discussed. Keywords: NiAlFe alloy, Two way SME, Thermo-mechanical training.

Abstract:The present contribution will focus on recent advanced transmission electron microscopy studies of Ni-Ti based alloys with the emphasis on features related to the martensitic transformation. The examples range from the atomic scale when looking at the atomic structure of a precipitate to the micron scale when looking at the configuration of these precipitates or to twin configurations in particular ternary alloys. An example of the first is the refinement of the atomic structure of a Ni4Ti3 precipitate formed in Ni-rich Ni-Ti alloys to enhance the shape memory behaviour. A slice-and-view study to obtain the 3D configuration of these precipitates is an example of the latter. Some other examples will be discussed as well.

Abstract:The temperature memory effect(TEM) of Ti_(50)Ni_(35)Cu_(15) and Ti_(50)Ni_(45)Cu_5(mole fraction,%) shape memory alloys was investigated by differential scanning calorimeter.The results indicate that TME of Ti-Ni-Cu alloy only exists in the heating process,and TME occurs both in B19′→B2 and B19→B2 transformation during heating process.But,there is no evidence of TME during cooling in the experimented alloy.The analysis suggests that this could be due to the re-distribution of the elastic strain energy during the incomplete transformation.
