Abstract:This contribution presents an overview of the structural features and third-order optical non-linearities of the principal classes of transition heterothiometallic clusters, and demonstrates how synthetic coordination chemistry can offer a very large variety of NLO performances in relation to the different applicable heavy transition metals and the cluster configurations, the molecular symmetry and structural rigidity of the cluster compounds, the size of the energy gap between HOMO and LUMO as well as the π-donating peripheral ligands. Such clusters can very well satisfy the different heavy demands of third-order NLO materials such as absorption, refraction, switch and most importantly, optical limiting, depending on the subtle interplay of structure–function relationships. Correlations between the structural characteristics and the non-linear optical functions of these heterothiometallic clusters are discussed and examined. Recent advances and perspectives of these clusters as NLO materials are also described.

Abstract:A series of new candidates as nonlinear optical materials, heterothiometallic clusters [MS4Cu4X2(py)(6)](X=I, M=W, 1, Mo, 2; X=Br, M=W, 3, Mo, 4) have been synthesized via two comparative synthetic routes for third-order NLO studies. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that the neutral clusters assume pentanuclear planar 'open' structures. Their optical responses to incident pulsed laser exhibit very large optical limiting effects, which are simulated by using excited-state absorption theory, with limiting thresholds of 0.07-0.10 J cm(-2) for clusters 1-4, and these effects should make this series of clusters among the most promising optical limiters. The strong third-order optical nonlinear absorption and optical self-focusing effects of clusters 1-4 in DMF solution were observed in the Z-scan measurements of an 8-ns pulsed laser at 532 nm. The corresponding effective third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities of this series of clusters were found to be the largest among all kinds of heterothiometallic clusters, and their third-order nonlinear hyperpolarizabilities are also reported. The nonlinear effects for these four clusters in DMF solution have also been investigated by time-resolved pump-probe experiments to provide direct evidence on the physical origin of the observed OL effects. The nonlinear optical properties of this series of clusters 1-4 were compared with other NLO cluster compounds studied previously and revealed a qualitative structure/NLO property correlation.
Large third-order optical nonlinearity of two cubane-like clusters containing oxotrithiometalate anions and silver: Synthesis, characterization, reactivity, and NLO properties-structure correlation

Abstract:Using low heating temperature solid-state reactions and self-assembly reactions, two new candidates [Et4N](3)[MOS3(mu(3)-I)(AgI)(3)] (M = Mo, 1; W, 2) for nonlinear optical (NLO) materials have been synthesized and characterized crystallographically as tetranuclear cubane-like heterothiometallic clusters. Their optical nonlinearities were measured by the Z-scan technique with an 8 ns pulsed laser at 532 nm. These two isomorphous clusters both exhibit strong NLO absorptive abilities [alpha(2) = 1.0 x 10(-9) m W-1 (1), 1.2 x 10(-9) m W-1 (2)] and effective self-focusing performance [n(2) = 8.8 x 10(-17) m(2) W-1 (1), 4.5 x 10(-1)7 m(2) W-1 (2)]. The optical limiting (OL) investigation demonstrates that these two clusters show large OL effects. The NLO properties of tetranuclear Ag-containing cubane-like clusters with oxotrithiometalate anions are reported here for the first time and the third-order NLO properties and OL effects suggest that clusters 1 and 2 are promising candidates for NLO applications. A comparison of the NLO effect among clusters with the same C-3v symmetry has been made in order to further understand and explore the function-structure relationships of these heterothiometallic clusters.

Abstract:The nonlinear absorptions and optical limiting properties of two nest-shaped metallic clusters were investigated with 532 rim, 8 ns duration laser pulses. Z-scan and optical limiting experimental results indicate that the nonlinear absorptions and optical limiting properties of two clusters depend critically on the heavy metallic atoms in the two clusters. The effective excited-state absorption cross sections were calculated according to effective excited-state absorption theory. The optical limiting mechanisms were analyzed.

Abstract:The optical nonlinearity performance and optical limiting (OL) properties of the new pentanuclear clusters [WS4Cu4Br2(py)6] [I] and [MoS4Cu4Br2(py)6] [II] were studied by using nanosecond laser pulsed at 532 nm wavelength. The cluster (I) exhibits strong OL effects. It is the best among the same kind of clusters. The OL performance of compound [I] was demonstrated to be superior than that of compound [II], and that of the compound [II] was superior than the C60 fullerene. The excited-state absorption has been studied by using Z-scan technique at the same time.

Abstract:A series of new candidates as nonlinear optical materials, tetra-nuclear heterobimetallic clusters [MOS3M3′Y(PPh3)3] (M=Mo, M′=Ag, Y=Br 1; M=W, M′=Ag, Y=I 2; M=Mo, M′=Cu, Y=I 3; M=W, M′=Cu, Y=I 4), have been synthesized by newly developed ligand-redistribution reaction for third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) studies. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction shows that clusters [MoX(μ3-S)3(μ3-Br)(AgPPh3)3] 1 and [WX(μ3-S)3(μ3-I)(CuPPh3)3] 4 (X=O0.5S0.5 1, O 4) adopt an isomorphous neutral cubane-like skeleton. Their optical nonlinearities were measured by Z-scan technique with an 8ns pulsed laser at 532nm. These clusters were found to exhibit effective nonlinear absorption, self-focusing effects and large optical limiting capabilities. The effective NLO susceptibilities χ(3) and the corresponding second-order hyperpolarizabilities γ of these clusters are also reported. The influence of cluster composition on NLO properties has been discussed accordingly.

Abstract:This paper reviews the recent development of inorganic and hybrid nanomaterials for optical limiting applications. The synthesis, testing method, optical limiting property and mechanism of several representative classes of nanomaterial, including carbon nanotubes, silver and gold nanocomposites, and selected other conducting and semiconducting nanomaterials, are introduced separately. The nonlinear optical mechanisms observed in inorganic nanomaterials, i.e. nonlinear scattering, two-photon absorption, free-carrier absorption, etc, are discussed in conjunction with the influence of the material properties and the laser source on the optical limiting performance.

Abstract:Complex coordinated functional groups [MAxBy] (M = Central coordination element; A, B = P, O, S, Se, F, Cl, Br or I) are composed of different types of anions A, B jointly linked to the same central cation M, which are in high potential to tune the physical properties of materials, e.g., second-order susceptibility, energy gaps and birefringence. Recently, Compound containing complex coordinated functional groups have attracted great attention in the nonlinear optical (NLO) field and a large number of this type crystals exhibit promising NLO performance. However, the inherent relationship between ionic group structure and optical properties of complex coordinated NLO materials have not been systematically studied. This article systematically summarizes complex coordinated NLO materials in recent five years from the perspective of the internal relationship between crystal structure and optical properties. In addition, we propose the ideal combination and arrangement modes for structural building units, and also reveal the influence of complex coordinated functional groups [MAxBy] toward the NLO response, optical band gap and phase matching ability of complex coordinated NLO materials.

Abstract:Nonlinear optical (NLO) crystal is an important component in laser frequency converter and high-tech military technology. It is worth noting that the NLO properties of crystals are largely determined by spatial arrangement of anionic groups. Recently, compounds with tri-coordinated ionic group have gained extensive attention due to their extraordinary NLO properties. It is of great significance to explore the relationship between the microstructure of tri-coordinated ionic groups and macroscopic properties of the NLO compounds. This paper illustrates the structure function relationship of compounds with tri-coordinated anion groups (alkali metal/alkaline earth metal), and reveals how tri-coordination ion groups influence SHG effect, phase matching capability and band gap of the compounds. Tri-coordinated anionic groups can be divided into isolated anionic groups, cyclized anionic groups and chain anionic groups according to different spatial arrangement. Specifically, when isolated planar triangular group and triangular cone group are arranged in order, which in favor of the SHG effect in the whole material. Meanwhile, anionic groups in ring shape contribute to a larger band gap of the compounds compared with triangular cone groups.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on Effects of Structural Modification of Tin Nanoclusters for Third-Order Nonlinear Optical Properties

Abstract:Tin oxide based materials have attracted much attention as new sources for nonlinear optical (NLO) devices, while the electronic mechanism behind the structure and nonlinearity is still unclear. In this work, by precisely controlling different functionalization ligands, here a series of binuclear [(nBuSn)2(TEOA)2L2] (L = monocarboxylic acid ligand) complexes have been synthesized and characterized; we also adopted a new method to make the metal clusters and PMMA blend together for NLO testing. Importantly, the electronic structure, static third-order NLO properties, sum over states (SOS) have been studied by both experimental and density function theory (DFT) analysis. The effects for general NLO polarizability under various conditions, including different substitutions ligands and replacement of the metal cores, have been further investigated. The results indicate the static second hyperpolarizabilities (γ) is inversely proportional to the band gap decreases. Notably, the theory predicts that the third-order nonlinear coefficient will double through the synergistic effects of pull–push groups. The hole–electron analysis of the main excited states indicates the simultaneous introduction of pull–push electron groups into the system cause the excitation of the valence layer from LE to LLCT, which also leads to significant increase in the γ value of complex 13. Abstract:The pivotal role of clusters and aromaticity in chemistry is undeniable, but there remains a gap in systematically understanding the aromaticity of metal-organic clusters. Herein, this article presents a novel metal-organic π-cluster, melding both metal-organic chemistry and aromaticity, to guide the construction of structurally stable Os-organic π-clusters. An in-depth analysis of these clusters reveals their bonding attributes, π-electronic composition, and origins of aromaticity, thereby confirming their unique metal-organic π-cluster properties. Furthermore, the Os5 cluster exhibits a promising third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) response, attributable to its narrow band gap and uniform electron/hole distribution, suggesting its potential as an optical switching material. This research introduces a fresh perspective on clusters, centered on delocalization, and broadens the domain of aromaticity studies. It also presents a novel method for designing efficient third-order NLO materials through consideration of the structure-activity relationship.

Abstract:Optical limiting is an essential concept for nonlinear optics and its applications. Recently, the nonlinear response in a two-dimensional (2D) superlattice (a periodic structure with its refractive index modulated in two dimensions) was studied for its potential applications in new optical devices. The available results are only related to the transition between a low transmission state and a high transmission state in the allowed bands. Up to date, optical limiting is not explored in 2D case with one incident wave. In this paper, a novel structure, which is composed of two dissimilar superlattices, is proposed for the optical limiting. The novel structure is named hetero-superlattice-junction structure in this paper. In terms of real-space-matching concept, optical limiting is demonstrated in a 2D nonlinear hetero-superlattice-junction structure, while this phenomena is proved unavailable in a 2D nonlinear superlattice.

Abstract:Optical limiting property of the new cluster [WOS3Cu3I(2-MePy)(3)] is studied. The comparison of the optical limiting performance of this compound with that of C-60 fullerene has demonstrated to be superior to the C-60 fullerene. Abstract:Optical limiting (OL) properties of a new pentanuclear cluster [MoS4Cu4Br2(py)6] were studied by using ns laser pulses. The comparison of the OL performance of this compound [MoS4Cu4Br2(py)6] with that of C60 fullerene shows that the cluster is superior to the C60 fullerene. Pump–probe results show that the OL behavior of the cluster can be attributed to the excited-state absorption.

Abstract:By incorporating functionality from both inorganic and organic components,hybrid organic-inorganic second-order nonlinear optical materials exhibit high nonlinear optics(NLO) efficiency,good thermal and temporal stability,and have drawn considerable attention due to their application in electro-optic modulations and laser second-order harmonic generation.In this article the strategies to improve their NLO performance and stability,and the recent research progress in the application of hybrid Mach-Zehnder(MZ) modulators are reviewed.To optimize NLO performance and film fabrication,a promising method to improve the compatibility of the hybrid NLO materials via hyperbranched structure is suggested.

Abstract:The optical limiting (OL) properties of the novel cluster cis-C*2Mo2S4Cu2(SCN)(2) in CH2Cl2 solution are studied by using nanosecond duration laser pulsed at 532 nm wavelength. The OL effect of this cluster can be observed with a linear transmittance of 75%. The limiting threshold can be derived from the OL experimental results. In order to provide direct evidence on the physical origin of the observed OL effects, the nonlinear effects for this cluster in CH2Cl2 solution have also been investigated by time-resolved pump-probe experiments. The pump-probe experimental results of this cluster are compared with that Of C-60, which is measured by using the same experimental setup. And it reveals that the nanosecond OL effect may be due to the reverse saturable absorption (RSA), which is related to the excited triplet states. A theoretical model of the five-level system is presented to analyze the pump-probe results.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have stimulated continued interest due to their potential applications in fields from electronic, optical to catalysis and energy. Compared with the widely studied 2D metal chalcogenides, 2D oxides could be of particular interest for a ranges of applications where oxidative and high temperature conditions are involved. This feature of 2D oxides, combined with the inherent benefits of 2D systems could also be important for nonlinear optical (NLO) studies that involves strong light-matter interactions. Here we focus on the recent advances in the exploration of 2D metal oxides for nonlinear optics and ultrafast photonic applications. Along with a brief description of the crystal structures, fabrication methods and general properties of 2D oxides, we concentrate our discussion on the recent progresses in the nonlinear optical studies on 2D systems of both metallic and nonmetallic nature. The strong NLO absorption of these 2D oxides has been utilized for the development of optical switches for driving pulse generation in a number of fiber and solid-state lasers operating in the near infrared range. This review finally presents a brief analysis of main challenges of 2D metal oxides in the field nonlinear photonics and a short discussion on potential future directions.
