Abstract:The main preoperative way to assess the malignant degree of brain glioma is based on patient's MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) findings and clinical data. Neuroradiologists' experience plays a critical role during the process due to the lack of knowledge about the relationships between influential factors and types of tumor. In order to improve the diagnosis accuracy without incurring the troubles in learning experience from domain experts, we ask help from data mining. Multi-layer perceptron network (MLP), decision tree, and rules induction are its common techniques. They are adopted to extract useful diagnostic patterns directly from MRI records of brain glioma patients. Testing accuracy got from 10-fold cross-validation test reveals that MLP outperforms the others, and rules induction is better than ID3. However, during the test, none of these algorithms can guarantee its accuracy always above 80%, which is required by possible users. To make things worse, overspecialization or over-fitting hurts these techniques to various extents. A vote scheme is implemented to solve these problems. Its testing result is satisfactory. When put into practice, the scheme correctly diagnoses all 6 new cases with surgical confirmation. The work proves that, with the help of data mining techniques, it is viable to acquire diagnostic patterns directly from brain glioma cases. A vote scheme based on different data mining techniques is helpful to alleviate over-fitting and improve prediction accuracy.
