Abstract:Non-equilibrium effects play a vital role in high-speed and rarefied gas flows and the accurate simulation of these flow regimes are far beyond the capability of near-local-equilibrium Navier-Stokes-Fourier equations. Eu proposed generalized hydrodynamic equations which are consistent with the laws of irreversible thermodynamics to solve this problem. Based on Eu's generalized hydrodynamics equations, a computation model, namely the nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR), was developed by R.S. Myong and applied successfully to one-dimensional shock wave structure and two-dimensional rarefied flows. In this paper, finite volume schemes, including LU-SGS time advance scheme, MUSCL interpolation and AUSMPW+ scheme, are firstly adopted to investigate NCCR model's validity and potential in three-dimensional complex hypersonic rarefied gas flows. Moreover, in order to solve the computational stability problems in 3D complex flows, a modified solution is developed for the NCCR model. Finally, the modified solution is tested for a slip complex flow over a 3D hollow cylinder-flare configuration. The numerical results show that the NCCR model by the modified solution yields good solutions in better agreement with the DSMC results and experimental data than NSF equations, and imply NCCR model's great potential capability in further application.

Abstract:As all known, there exists extremely thermal and chemical non-equilibrium phenomenon in hypersonic flows. Much effort has been put into the development of computational models for the prediction of such non-equilibrium flow. In order to obtain the real physical solution of the challenging non-equilibrium problems, Eu proposed a set of generalized hydrodynamic equations (GHE) from the viewpoint of generalized hydrodynamics. Based on Eu's GHE equations, Myong developed an efficient computational model, named as the nonlinear coupled constitutive relations (NCCR). The present study is based on the 3-D FVM NCCR model in conjunction with 7-species chemical reaction model to consider the reacting gas effect for hypersonic reentry vehicles. For further examining the performance of the proposed computational model, the typical engineering cases of Radio Attenuation Measurements (RAM)-C II vehicle are adopted. The flow contours, distribution profiles along stagnation line and surface properties are compared between nonlinear coupled constitutive model and those of the Navier-Stokes equation. The accuracy and physical consistency of the NCCR model are critically examined and validated for hypersonic reaction flow in the continuum region. For the near continuum region, the NCCR model can predict non-equilibrium phenomenon more accurately than NS equation through the comparison of shock stand-off distance and electron number density. The comparisons between NCCR model with one component perfect gas and multi-species reacting gas effect are also made to show the importance of chemical reaction source term.

Abstract:A two-phase flow model is developed to study violent impact flow problem. The model governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with free surface boundary conditions is solved by a Constrained Interpolation Profile (CIP)-based high-order finite difference method on a fixed Cartesian grid system. The free surface is immersed in the computation domain and expressed by a one-fluid density function. An accurate Volume of Fluid (VOF)-type scheme, the Tangent of Hyperbola for Interface Capturing (THINC), is combined for the free surface treatment. Results of another two free surface capturing methods, the original VOF and CIP, are also presented for comparison. The validity and utility of the numerical model are demonstrated by applying it to two dam-break problems: a small-scale two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) full scale simulations and a large-scale 2D simulation. Main attention is paid to the water elevations and impact pressure, and the numerical results show relatively good agreement with available experimental measurements. It is shown that the present numerical model can give a satisfactory prediction for violent impact flow.

Abstract:High-order modified Navier-Stokes (NS) equations are introduced to describe the transitional flow derived from Burnett equations considering the inaccurate simulation of shock structure using traditional NS continuum methods, particularly at high Mach numbers. This process is performed by defining the effective transportation coefficient, which is associated with Mach number, molecule propriety, and continuum failure criterion. Within this method, the linear Stokes and Fourier relationships are replaced by nonlinear constitutive relationships to describe transitional flow. The traditional NS equation formulation is preserved. The shock structures of both monatomic and diatomic gases are concentrated with different Mach numbers to validate the accuracy and effectiveness of the derived method. The comparison of shock structure with DSMC and Burnett equations shows that the high-order modified NS equations obtain better results than traditional NS equations in terms of shock wave, particularly at high Mach numbers. The modified NS equations also capture the significant features of Burnett equations in shock structure simulation.

Abstract:Kelvin-Helmhotz roll up of the 3-D time-developing mixing was simulated numerically. The dye lines or fluid interfaces were presented by computing a passive scalar at high Peclet number. The hydric bubbles were also simulated numerically. To help understanding the visualization results, the behaviour of coherent structures were analyzed. A comparison between vortical structure and passive scalar contours indicates that the wrapping by the vortices largely dominates the evolution of passive scalar.

Abstract:We report the detailed information of a purely elastic instability and its mixing enhancement effect in a viscoelastic fluid flow driven by a constant pressure gradient along a curvilinear channel obtained for the first time from the three-dimensional direct numerical simulations (DNSs) of this kind of flow geometry.Three-dimensional unstable flow structures similar to those visualized in experiments are realized through the DNSs.The inception of elastic instability,conformation of microstructures,statistical and dynamic information of velocity field and the mixing enhancement effect caused by elastic instability are then discussed.
The three-dimensional vortical structure in time-developing mixing layer with cross shear

Abstract:A new method used to describe three-dimensional mixing layers with discrete vortex filaments is studied. Based on this method, the three-dimensional mixing layers are computed numerically. The vortical structure, distribution of mean velocity and momentum loss thickness in different time are given. The effects of shear rate and intensity of disturbance on flows are analysed. Some computed results are compared with experimental ones, they show a good agreement. The results given in the paper are helpful to understand such flows.
Three-phase Model of Visco-elastic Incompressible Fluid Flow and its Computational Implementation

Abstract:Energetic Variational Approach is used to derive a novel thermodynamically consistent three-phase model of a mixture of Newtonian and visco-elastic fluids. The model which automatically satisfies the energy dissipation law and is Galilean invariant, consists of coupled Navier-Stokes and Cahn-Hilliard equations. Modified General Navier Boundary Condition with fluid elasticity taken into account is also introduced for using the model to study moving contact line problems. Energy stable numerical scheme is developed to solve system of model equations efficiently. Convergence of the numerical scheme is verified by simulating a droplet sliding on an inclined plane under gravity. The model can be applied for studying various biological or biophysical problems. Predictive abilities of the model are demonstrated by simulating deformation of venous blood clots with different visco-elastic properties and experimentally observed internal structures under different biologically relevant shear blood flow conditions.

Abstract:The mixing layer flow was numerically simulated by the discrete vortex method, in which the diffusion velocity method was adopted to model the viscosity. The results by diffusion velocity method agreed with the experiments better than that by random vortex method and core spreading method, and showed the self similarity of mixing layer flow more perfectly. The results also indicated that the over estimation of the root of mean square is attributed to the effect of three dimensionality existing in actual flow, but neglected by two dimensional discrete vortex method.
Numerical Simulation Water Pollution Diffusions for Sudden Hazardous Chemical

Abstract:Sudden hazardous chemical water pollution diffusions contact with free surface flow in the paper.Based on two-phase flow theory,VOF compressive model for three dimensions transient free surface flow is deduced.A concentration compressive model for sudden hazardous chemical water pollution diffusion was represented.Transport action caused by relative velocity between water and air on free surface was explained in concentration compressive mode.A high resolution method was used for hazardous chemical interface reconstruction in VOF and concentration models.Numerical simulate 3D flow field affected non-submerged groyne,side hazardous chemical discharge and hazardous chemical dispersion in a meandering channel was carried out.The simulations were compared with experimental data or other published computations.The results mean that the compressive models proposed in this paper can accurately simulate free surface,flow field and hazardous chemical diffusions in 3D flow.

Abstract:For increasingly non-equilibrium flowfields, the Navier-Stokes equations lose accuracy partially due to the single temperature approximation. To overcome this barrier, a continuum multi-temperature model based on the Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook equation coupled with the Landau-Teller-Jeans relaxation model has been proposed for two-dimensional hypersonic non-equilibrium multi-temperature flow computation. In a recent study, a two-stage fourth-order gas-kinetic scheme (GKS) has been developed for equilibrium flows, which achieves a fourth-order accuracy in space and time as well as high efficiency and robustness. In this paper, targeting for accurate and efficient simulation of multi-temperature non-equilibrium flows, a high-order three-dimensional multi-temperature GKS is constructed under the two-stage fourth-order framework, with the fourth-order Simpson interpolation rule for the newly emerged source term. Simulations on decaying homogeneous isotropic turbulence, low-density nozzle flow, rarefied hypersonic flow over a flat plate, and type IV shock-shock interaction are used to validate the multi-temperature model through the comparison with experimental measurements. The unified gas kinetic scheme (UGKS) results and the Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) solutions will be used as well in some cases for validation. Computational results not only confirm the high-order accuracy and quite robustness of this scheme but also show the significant improvement on computational efficiency compared with UGKS and DSMC, especially for the flow in the near continuum regime. Numerical Simulation for Hazardous Chemical Diffusions in Meandering Channel

Abstract:Free surface flow and hazardous chemical diffusions are bounded problems. Based on two-phase flow theory, VOF dynamical model for three dimensions transient free surface flow and a concentration compressive model for pollutant diffusion are represented. Finite volume method is used for discrete equations, and Gamma scheme can tackle the problem of boundedness. Gamma scheme is used for convection term in VOF and concentration equations. The flow and hazardous chemical diffusions in meandering channel used by Chang's experiments are simulated. The simulation results agree very well with the experimental results. The models proposed in this paper can accurately simulate flow field and pollutant diffusion in 3-dimensional natural waters flow.

Abstract:The major drawbacks of the Hele-Shaw approximation, commonly used today as a means of simplifying the simulation of the injection molding process, are the inherent loss of the ability to predict important physical phenomena and the ambiguity involved in the definition of a midplane. With the objective of eliminating many of these problems, a fully three-dimensional mold filling simulation program has been developed. The governing equations are in terms of Navier-Stokes problems for the viscous, incompressible, nonisothermal, and non-Newtonian fluid. To avoid the simultaneous determination of the coupled velocity and pressure, this article introduces ail iterative method that at any given time step solves the components independently. This method reduces memory needs in simulation and enhances the stability of numerical scheme. In addition, this article also presents a mixed implicit and "up-wind" scheme to discrete the energy equation. It can overcome the spatial oscillations of temperature in numerical simulation. Good agreements with both analytic solution and the actual processes are found in the current investigation. This method can successfully predict the flow features in injection molding.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a phase field model for the dynamics of three-component immiscible flows on solid surface. The model is an extension of the two-component phase field model consists of the Cahn–Hilliard Navier–Stokes equations with the generalized Navier boundary condition. The generalization of the approach to the three phase problem requires some extra consistency conditions for the system in the bulk and at the boundary in order for the model to give physically relevant results. We formulate the boundary conditions that enforce the consistency conditions using the Lagrangian multipliers. We then develop an efficient adaptive mesh refinement technique to solve the system. Several numerical results are given, including the buoyancy-driven droplet through a fluid–fluid interface, formation of four-phase contact line and dynamics of a compound droplet on solid surface under shear flow.

Abstract:A mathematic physical model of non-equilibrium spontaneous condensing wet steam flow was introduced under Eulerian coordinates. The three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations were solved using LU-SGS-GE implicit scheme and modified Higher-order, high resolution MUSCL TVD scheme. All of the steam/water properties were gotten from IAPWS-IF97 formulas. A wet flow inside Laval nozzle was calculated and the results showed a good agreement with experimental data.
Numerical Study of the Slip Line Instabilities in Shock-Wavy Wall Reflection

Abstract:The study of shock-induced flow instabilities and turbulent mixing is of great significance in the field of astrophysics and inertial confinement fusion. The reflection of a planar shock on a wavy wall is simulated with the Gas Kinetic Scheme (GKS). The time evolution of shock waves and multi-scale flow structures is accurately captured at different incident Mach number for the wavy walls with different wave-height and wavenumbers. Due to the disturbance from the wavy wall, the triple points spontaneously formed and traverse on the front of the wave. The trajectory of the triple points forms a typical cellular pattern. After each collision of the triple points, the slip lines will shed, and the vortex structure will appear from the baroclinic deposition of vorticity. This baroclinic deposition of vorticity is a different mechanism that includes both Richtmyer-Meshkov process and Kelvin-Helmholtz instability. The analysis of the vorticity transport equations is presented to understand this shock driven slip line instability. Finally, this study provides some references for the future investigation of turbulent mixing.

Abstract:A moving planar shock interacting with multi-material interfaces in compressible fluid on fixed Descartes grids is studied.Level-set method combined with a revised real ghost fluid method(rGFM) are applied for tracking gas-water and gas-solid interfaces,where a revised Riemann problem is constructed and its approximate solutions are populated for real and ghost fluid status.WENO schemes are employed for Euler and level-set equations.Numerical schlieren images are obtained for demonstrating shock evolution.Complex shock structures distinguish accurately and show various interfaces embedded in the fluid.Other than partition and coordinate transformation,we offer an approach for computation of complex flow field on Descartes grids involving multi-material interfaces or objects.

Abstract:Level set and volume of fluid (VOF) methods for incompressible two-phase micro flows considering wall adhesion are presented. In the level set method, based on staggered MAC grid, a second-order projection method is carried out to solve 2D Navier-Stokes (N-S) equations and level set function. In the VOF method, the volume fraction of each phase in each computational cell is employed. Variables and properties of flow are computed to represent volume-averaged values. The interface between fluids is traced with solution of a continuity equation for volume fractions. Computational results are shown and compared with experimental results.
Three-Dimensional Lattice Boltzmann Model for High-Speed Compressible Flows

Abstract:A highly efficient three-dimensional (3D) Lattice Boltzmann (LB) model for high speed compressible flows is proposed. This model is developed from the original one by Kataoka and Tsutahara[Phys. Rev. E 69, 056702 (2004)]. The convection term is discretized by the Non-oscillatory, containing No free parameters and Dissipative (NND) scheme, which effectively damps oscillations at discontinuities. To be more consistent with the kinetic theory of viscosity and to further improve the numerical stability, an additional dissipation term is introduced. Model parameters are chosen in such a way that the von Neumann stability criterion is satisfied. The new model is validated by well-known benchmarks, (i) Riemann problems, including the problem with Lax shock tube and a newly designed shock tube problem with high Mach number; (ii) reaction of shock wave on droplet or bubble. Good agreements are obtained between LB results and exact ones or previously reported solutions. The model is capable of simulating flows from subsonic to supersonic and capturing jumps resulted from shock waves.
