Abstract:WCDMA-TDD system for third generation wireless communication systems can exploit the reciprocity between the uplink and downlink channels. A channel estimation scheme that uses multi timeslot averaging is proposed for WCDMA-TDD system. It is demonstrated by computer simulations that the BER performance improvement can be gained.

Abstract:In this paper, the simulation results of the uplink performance of WCDMA system is presented and analyzed. The channel estimation is carried out using pilot symbols of control channel that is transmitted simultaneously to the data channel. A method called weighted multi-slot averaging is employed for channel estimation. The simulation results show that the number of slots involved and weighting factors should be selected according to the variation speed of the fading channel. The effects of forward error correction (FEC), the number of RAKE fingers, and the strength difference between channel paths on the uplink performance are also studied.

Abstract:Simulation has been conducted to investigate the performance of the up-link WCDMA channel in which pilot symbols in control channel is transmitted simultaneously with the data channel, and channel estimation is carried out using weighted multi-slot averaging. Simulation result indicates that in the process of channel estimation, number of slots and weighting factors should be selected in accordance with the fading environment of the channel under investigation. Based on the simulation result, analysis is focused on such issues as forward error correction (FEC) and how the number of RAKE fingers and average power difference between channel paths influence the up-link performance.

Abstract:A novel multipath channel estimation method is proposed to solve a special problem that occurs in channel estimation for ETSI's WCDMA uplink communications, where scrambling is introduced in the dedicated physical channels. The delays and complex amplitudes of the multipath components are estimated. A matched filter is employed for each user to carry out the despreading and unscrambling simultaneously. The filter coefficients are a combination of the OVSF code and the preliminary scrambling code for the user. An averaging operation reduces the noise and interference, and thus improves the estimates. © 1999 IEEE.

Abstract:An algorithm of channel and carrier frequency offset joint estimation is proposed in this paper with analyzing the characteristic of carrier frequency offset and wireless channel in Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (TD-SCDMA) system. Frequency offset and channel parameters can be uncoupled by means of partly correlating the training sequence and calculating difference, then they are estimated accurately through iteration. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm performs quite well in both frequency offset and channel estimation. The frequency offset estimation performance is closed to Cramér-Rao bound, and the link performance is good. The proposed method has low complexity and strong practicability. It can be used in other Time Division Duplex (TDD) CDMA systems.

Abstract:Estimation of Rayleigh fading channels using time multiplexed pilot symbols in W-CDMA (FDD) is considered. A method of interpolation on a second-order curve using the instantaneous channel estimation of two successive slots based on the least square method (SOLSM) is presented. It is demonstrated by computer simulations that the channel distortion on the data symbols in a slot can be estimated effectively compared to the method using simple linear interpolation, and the performance of the RAKE combiner is improved effectively especially in fast moving cases.

Elaborate theoretical analysis concerning the principle downlink of WCDMA physical layer is given. Abstract:The Rake receiver, of which the performance heavily relies on channel estimation precision, is an effective anti-multipath method in CDMA systems. The conventional channel estimation method is to average the channel parameters which are derived during pilot symbol transmission. The method is not appropriate for third generation mobile communication systems where channels have wide variation range. This paper proposes a novel channel estimation method, in which the maximum Doppler frequency shift is firstly estimated from the envelope of the channel parameters during the pilot symbol period. Then an exponential smoothing method is applied to adjust the weighting factors of the slots being averaged. Simulation results show that the channel parameters can be accurately estimated and system performance is consequently improved.

A novel channel estimation scheme is presented for the wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) system by using fractal interpolation between the instantaneous channel estimation of two successive slots. It is demonstrated by computer simulations that the proposed method can estimate the channel parameters more accurately, and the performance of the RAKE receiver is improved especially at high and varying vehicular speeds. The results also show that the fractal model can describe multipath fading more effectively compared to the conventional statistical models.

Abstract:The fractal theory is applied to the description of multipath fading channels in order to improve the channel estimation using time multiplexed pilot symbols in wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA) systems. Based on the fractional Brownian motion model of multipath fading, a novel channel estimation scheme using fractal interpolation between the instantaneous channel estimation of two successive slots is presented. Because the fast varying effect of channel parameters in fast terminal moving cases is considered, the proposed method can estimate the channel parameters more accurately than that of the existing schemes and self-adaptively track the channel changes in different terminal moving speeds. Computer simulation demonstrate the performance of the Rake combiner is improved notably. Additionally, the results show that the fractal model can describe multipath fading more effectively compared to the conventional statistical models.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirement of channel state information in MU-MIMO downlink precoding, we propose a channel estimation scheme called TDMA-MMSE based on single user channel estimation. The performance of this scheme is analyzed. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that this novel estimation scheme outperforms single user channel estimation. The throughout and BER performance of multi-user MIMO system with estimate channel information is close to the system with perfect channel information at high uplink SNR. Through the theoretical analysis and simulation, it shows that the proposed scheme is practicable.

Abstract:Coordinated multi-point transmission (CoMP) is a promising strategy to provide high spectral efficiency for cellular systems. To facilitate multicell precoding, downlink channel is estimated via uplink training in time division duplexing systems by exploiting channel reciprocity. Virtual subcarriers in practical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems degrade the channel estimation performance severely when discrete Fourier transform (DFT) based channel estimator is applied. Minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimator is able to provide superior performance, but at the cost of high complexity and more a priori information. In this paper, we propose a low complexity channel estimator for CoMP multi-antenna OFDM systems. We employ series expansion to approximate the matrix inversion in MMSE estimator as matrix multiplications. By exploiting the feature of frequency domain training sequences in prevalent systems, we show that the proposed estimator can be implemented by DFT. To reduce the required channel statistical information, we use the average channel gains instead of channel correlation matrix, which leads to minor performance loss in CoMP systems. Simulation results show that the proposed channel estimator performs closely to the MMSE estimator.

Abstract:In order to improve the system performance over wireless fading channel, transmit diversity technique has been proven as an attractive and effective solution especially for broadcasting systems. In this paper, a PN sequence design scheme based on both cyclic-shift m-sequences and space-time block coded (STBC) m-sequences for time domain synchronous orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system with transmit diversity is proposed. Based on this novel design, flexible channel estimation which provides a trade-off between maximum delay spread and maximum Doppler spread over double-selective channel is investigated and a radix-2 fast Fourier transform (FFT) approach is adopted for implementation from the viewpoint of computational complexity Simulations show that the performance of the proposed transmit diversity scheme is better than conventional one and perform well under different propagation conditions.

Abstract:This paper presents a channel estimation (CE) method for transmit diversity systems based on time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) scheme. Compared with conventional methods, the proposed CE method doesn't need the hypothesis that the channel responses over two consecutive signal frames or over two adjacent subcarriers are equal. Thus, it can greatly improve the system performance, especially over doubly selective fading channels. We theoretically calculate the minimum square error (MSE) lower bound and derive the design criterion for optimal training sequences. Based on these results, an optimal training sequence for multiple antenna applications is proposed. Simulation results confirm that an obvious gain in the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) can be obtained using the proposed method.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new slot pattern for channel estimation on uplink DPCCH, downlink DPCCH and SCPCH. It is proposed that small part of pilot symbols is moved to the middle of each slot and the total number of pilot symbols in one slot remains unchanged. The corresponding channel estimation method, second-order interpolation based on weighted least-square method (SOLSM), is also presented. Simulations based on the proposed slot pattern and our channel estimation method show that the performance of Rake receiver is improved compared to that using the old ones.

Abstract:An improved channel estimation technique based on the Steiner low-cost channel estimator is proposed, which is widely used in TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access) cellular mobile radio systems. TD-SCDMA is also known as third-generation mobile systems where adaptive antennas are employed. As additive noise has a great adverse effect on the performance of the Steiner estimator, the proposed method employs time-correlated post-processing with a threshold filter to reduce channel noise and compensate channel variations. Furthermore, channel estimation combining direction-of-arrivals (DOAs) is performed, which can reduce channel interferences without adding computational complexity, for the information of DOAs has been obtained by the inherent adaptive antenna system. The performance of the improved channel estimator is compared with conventional channel estimation approaches, and numerical results show that the new approach can lead to considerable performance enhancement even in high-speed vehicle propagation environments. Abstract:Multi-carrier code division multiple access system (MC-CDMA) is a flexible and adaptable radio interface to provide dynamically changing bit rates and a variety of services on radio channels. An accurate channel estimate allows the use of multi-user detection and power loading to improve system performance. In this paper, we propose a novel channel estimation method of uplink for MC-CDMA systems. In MC-CDMA systems, code-multiplexed pilot symbols are transmitted consecutively in both time and frequency domains. In the proposed method, weighted pilot symbols in both domains are coherently added to improve signal to noise ratio of pilot symbols in channel estimation. We propose a method to select the weighting factor for pilot symbols according to the changes of propagation by measuring the maximum Doppler shift and the maximum delay time. Also the channel estimation algorithm is simplified. The method is evaluated in the end. The results show that the method is simple and effective.

Abstract:Channel estimation is a key issue in time domain synchronous-orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) system, which is usually based on pseudorandom noise (PN) sequences time domain correlation. However, in space time block coding (STBC)-based TDS-OFDM MIMO system, PN sequences received in each receiver antenna are the overlaps of multiple transmitters' linear convolution of PN sequences with corresponding channel responses. Thus, channel state information (CSI) can not be estimated accurately only by means of PN sequences time domain correlation. In this paper we propose a joint time-frequency domain channel estimation scheme for STBC-based TDS-OFDM MIMO system with 2 transmitter antennas and 2 receiver antennas. To aid the channel estimation, every two signal frames in a super frame are grouped into a signal frame group at the transmitter side. For the first frame of each signal frame group, 315 Transmission Parameters Signaling (TPS) symbols are inserted equally with 12 OFDM sub-carries intervals in both transmitter branches. While for the second frame, TPS symbols are inserted equally only in the first transmitter branch, and in the second transmitter branch zero symbols are inserted in the corresponding positions. By exploiting such an elaborate TPS inserting rule and PN sequence time domain correlation, our proposed scheme can estimate CSI easily in both time domain and frequency domain. Simulation results show that our scheme can estimate the CSI accurately: the mean absolute error between the estimated values and the original values is less than 0.01 under slow-fading channel when the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is 8 dB.
