Abstract:To compress the data of geometric information,based on the center curve and error curve of the interval Bézier curve,the approximate merging of a pair of rational Bézier curves by interval Bézier curve was obtained.The basic idea is to get the polynomial Bézier curve as the center curve which approximately merges the neighbouring rational Bézier curves by using the perturbation theory first.Then,we compute the error curve with constant or non-constant interval by solving linear equations or solving a quadratic programming problem.Both of the two error curves can be improved by the application of the well-known subdivision approach to this method.Several numerical examples are presented to illustrate the correctness and validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:This paper deals with the merging problem, i.e. to approximate two adjacent Bézier curves by a single Bézier curve. A novel approach for approximate merging is introduced in the paper by using the constrained optimization method. The basic idea of this method is to find conditions for the precise merging of Bézier curves first, and then compute the constrained optimization solution by moving the control points. “Discrete” coefficient norm in L2 sense and “squared difference integral” norm are used in our method. Continuity at the endpoints of curves are considered in the merging process, and approximate merging with points constraints are also discussed. Further, it is shown that the degree elevation of original Bézier curves will reduce the merging error.

Abstract:Based on the property of Jacobi polynomials and the solution of conditional extremum,the approximate merging of 4 neighbouring triangular Bézier surfaces with boundary constraints are discussed.With the help of the orthonormality of Jacobi polynomials and the Bernstein-Jacobi transformation matrix,the distance function with respect to L2 norm between the surfaces before and after approximate merging is obtained.Meanwhile,based on the boundary constraints and the boundary continuity at three corners,control points are constrained by linear equations.With the help of Lagrange multipliers,we obtain the optimal approximate merging surface with minimal distance.Both the control points of approximate merging surfaces and the precise error of approximation are expressed explicitly in matrix form.The degree elevation could reduce the merging error.Finally,several numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness and validity of the algorithm.

Abstract:In industry design and reverse engineering, the B-spline curve is an important tool for shape design and data fitting. The quality of final product shape is determined by the fairness of the B-spline curve directly. In this paper, a new method for fairing a B-spline curve is presented. The shape of a B-spline curve can be modified by adjusting its control points. The adjusting range of the control points is restricted by the β constraint, while the shape of the whole curve can be restricted by the α constraint. Finally, the fairing curve can be obtained by solving a linear system of equations. The method can be applied for global or local curve fairing. Examples of B-spline curve fairing from simulated and real data are presented to show the efficiency of the method.

Abstract:A disk Bézier curve is a Bézier curve whose control points are disks in a plane. It can be viewed as a parametric curve with error tolerances. In this paper, we discuss the problem of merging a pair of disk Bézier curves, that is, bounding two adjacent disk Bézier curves by a single disk Bézier curve. We propose an efficient method to solve the problem. The basic idea of the method is to merge the center curves of the two original disk Bézier curves and to take the merged curve as the center curve of the merged disk Bézier curve, and then compute the radius by solving some optimization problems. Furthermore, it is shown that degree elevation of original disk Bézier curves will improve the merging effect.

Abstract:We present an efficient geometric algorithm for conic spline curve fitting and fairing through conic arc scaling. Given a set of planar points, we first construct a tangent continuous conic spline by interpolating the points with a quadratic Bézier spline curve or fitting the data with a smooth arc spline. The arc spline can be represented as a piecewise quadratic rational Bézier spline curve. For parts of the G1 conic spline without an inflection, we can obtain a curvature continuous conic spline by adjusting the tangent direction at the joint point and scaling the weights for every two adjacent rational Bézier curves. The unwanted curvature extrema within conic segments or at some joint points can be removed efficiently by scaling the weights of the conic segments or moving the joint points along the normal direction of the curve at the point. In the end, a fair conic spline curve is obtained that is G2 continuous at convex or concave parts and G1 continuous at inflection points. The main advantages of the method lies in two aspects, one advantage is that we can construct a curvature continuous conic spline by a local algorithm, the other one is that the curvature plot of the conic spline can be controlled efficiently. The method can be used in the field where fair shape is desired by interpolating or approximating a given point set. Numerical examples from simulated and real data are presented to show the efficiency of the new method.

Abstract:The objective of this paper is to provide an efficient and reliable algorithm for representing and evaluating the boundary of the interval Bézier curve in 2- and 3-D. The boundary of the planar Bézier curve is represented by a sequence of Bézier curve segments with same degree and line segments in the order they are encountered when marching counter-clockwise along its boundary. The boundary can also be represented as a single B-spline curve having the same degree with the interval Bézier curve. The boundary of the 3-D interval Bézier curve is made up of trimmed Bézier surface patches and rectangular patches. Some examples illustrate our algorithms.

Abstract:In shape blending process,the geometric continuity of blendingcurves is not always preserved.In this paper,based on a symmetric opinion,the geometric continuity preserving problems of blending curves are investigated by using the boundary properties of Bézier curve.Especially,in the linear blending process,the maintenance conditions of the first order and the second order geometric continuities are derived,and several solutions are discussed.Then an n-th order balance geometric continuity condition and its relative generic preserving algorithm are given.The algorithms can be used in computer animation and industry design.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel blending approach for both 2D and 3D curves with the discrete Poisson equation defined on piecewise linear curves as the theoretical foundation. Based on defining local frames on source and target curves, a non-linear gradient field interpolation algorithm is proposed. With user-specified boundary conditions, the in-between curves are reconstructed implicitly from the interpolated gradient fields. By viewing the source curve and the target one as scalar fields defined on the common domain, our algorithm has the distinctive feature that it generates blending sequences via manipulating gradient fields instead of interpolating node coordinates. Statistics of the perimeter and the interior area (for 2D curves) show our method keeps the in-between curves as rigid as possible. Compared with competing methods, our method is more stable.

Abstract:In this paper, we put forward and study the problem of bounding an interval rational Bezier curve with an interval polynomial Bezier curve. We propose three different methods: Hybrid Method, Perturbation Method and Linear Programming Method to solve this problem. Examples are illustrated to compare the three different methods. The empirical results show that the Perturbation Method and the Linear Programming Method produce much tighter bounds than the Hybrid Method, though they are computationally several times more expensive.

Abstract:Using an analogy between the control polygon and the bar network,four minimization models as deformation engines,i.e.minimization of the force variations,minimization of the forces,minimization of the bar length were,minimization of the node displacements,were investigated.These minimization problems were formulated as a unified mathematical form by using the nodes perturbation.So it is convenient to obtain a multiple combination of the minimization models which are used to satisfy the various shape requirements.The combination of minimization of the forces and minimization of the node displacements is used for the global and local smoothness.Experimental cases show that the proposed method can be widely applied to curve editing.
NURBS curve fairing based on non-uniform B-spline wavelet decomposition

Abstract:Taking advantage of orthogonality, locality and oscillation of non-uniform B-spline wavelets, a new fairing algorithm for rational B-spline curve was studied. Various knots selection methods were used to decompose the non-uniform rational B-spline(NURBS) curve.The global and local fairing for the NURBS curve were implemented through approximation. The problem of position and tangent preserving at end points were dealt with by adding constraints. The applications in RE-SOFT,a reverse engineering software developed by Zhejiang University, showed that the fairing algorithm based on non-uniform B-spline wavelets decomposition can efficiently remove the bad points and improve the quality of the curve.

Abstract:Interval Bezier curves are new representation forms of parametric curves that can embody a complete description of coefficient errors. Using this new representation, the problem of lack of robustness in all state-of-the-art CAD systems can be largely overcome. In this paper, we discuss the problem of bounding interval Bezier curves with lower degree interval Bezier curves. We propose two different methods-Linear Programming and Optimal Approximation to solve this problem and provide several examples to demonstrate the algorithms. The examples show that while the Linear Programming method generally gives quite good bound, the Optimal Approximation algorithm provides much tighter approximation interval curves than the previous methods. Abstract:This paper addresses the problem of approximate merging of two adjacent B-spline curves into one B-spline curve. The basic idea of the approach is to find the conditions for precise merging of two B-spline curves, and perturb the control points of the curves by constrained optimization subject to satisfying these conditions. To obtain a merged curve without superfluous knots, we present a new knot adjustment algorithm for adjusting the end k knots of a kth order B-spline curve without changing its shape. The more general problem of merging curves to pass through some target points is also discussed.

Meanwhile, NURBS has already become the de facto industrial standard in existing CAD/CAM systems. Therefore, it is required to study how to blend two B -spline surfaces. However, two arbitrary B -spline surfaces (called base surfaces) are hard to be blended with a B -spline surface (called blending surface) because the knot vectors of the two base surfaces are usually mismatched. In this paper, we proposed a curve-based spline representation, i.e., the semi-structured B-spline surface, which is generated by skinning a series of B -spline curves with different knot vectors. By assigning suitable knot vectors to the head and tail skinned curves, the semi-structured B -spline surface can blend two B -spline surfaces smoothly without disturbing them at all. We formulated the B -spline surface blending problem as an optimization problem with continuity constraints, and the continuity between the base and blending surfaces can reach G 2 or C 2 . Examples illustrated in this paper validate the effectiveness and efficiency of our method.

Abstract:Curve and surface blending is an important operation in CAD systems, in which a non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) has been used as the de facto standard. In local corner blending, two curves intersecting at that corner are first made disjoint, and then the third blending curve is added-in to smoothly join the two curves with G1-or G2-continuity. In this paper we present a study to solve the joint problem based on curve extension. The following nice properties of this extension algorithm are exploited in depth: (1) The parameterization of the original shapes does not change; (2) No additional fragments are created. Various examples are presented to demonstrate that our solution is simple and efficient.

Abstract:Based on the study of some intrinsic properties of the weights of rational Bezier curve, it has been found that the shape of a curve can be changed by adjusting the weights without moving its control points. An approach for improving the geometric continuity order between two adjacent curves by modifying the weights is presented. The G(3) continuity conditions for two adjacent curves are first derived, which reveals that the geometric meaning of G(3) continuity is torsion continuity. A constructive method is then presented to blend two rational Bezier curves with G(3) continuity. Finally, the proposed method is used to construct closed G(2) curves, or G(3) curves by changing or inserting one control point.

Abstract:Just by adjusting the control points iteratively, progressive-iterative approximation presents an intuitive and straightforward way to fit data points. It generates a curve or patch sequence with finer and finer precision, and the limit of the sequence interpolates the data points. The progressive-iterative approximation brings more flexibility for shape controlling in data fitting. In this paper, we design a local progressive-iterative approximation format, and show that the local format is convergent for the blending curve with normalized totally positive basis, and the bi-cubic B-spline patch, which is the most commonly used patch in geometric design. Moreover, a special adjustment manner is designed to make the local progressive-iterative approximation format is convergent for a generic blending patch with normalized totally positive basis. The local progressive-iterative approximation format adjusts only a part of the control points of a blending curve or patch, and the limit curve or patch interpolates the corresponding data points. Based on the local format, data points can be fit adaptively.
