Abstract:Landing on surface of planet is the most direct and effective means of deep space exploration. Taking the picture of lander and surrounding environment can monitor the working status of the lander, and different exploration tasks arranged different imaging methods. Apollo 11 achieved manned lunar landing, so astronauts leaved lunar lander and installed imaging camera; Curiosity rover is equipped MAHLI (Mars Hand Lens Imager) at the end of the robot arm, and capture the own image of the rover; Chang'E-3 consists of lander and rover, which can captured image each other. In this paper, taking into account the working conditions without rover, we designed an ejection-style self-imaging apparatus for lunar lander, which consists of the optical imaging system, the tumbler structure body and the ejector body. Ejector body is mounted on the lunar lander to eject the imaging system to the appropriate distance. To make the image of lander in the center field of view, the imaging system needs to be installed on a tumbler structure body to ensure that the optical axis of imaging system can be adjusted to the direction toward the lander. We designed and developed the imaging optical system, the mechanical structure of tumbler body and ejector body, deduced reasonable compression spiral spring parameter according to the application requirements, and completed finite element analysis of tumbler structure body in the fall process. The experiments on the sand, soil and gravel ground verify the feasibility of the design scheme.
Tsinghua Lunar Rover Prototype and Its Hardware Design

Abstract:In this paper, the hardware architecture of a lunar rover prototype with six wheels driven independently is discussed. Six driving control modules with the same hardware configuration but different software serial numbers are connected via the EIA RS-485 network to control the six wheels respectively. Each driving module is responsible for the control of the steering speed and turning angle of a certain wheel, and can communicate with the host computer in the rover prototype in real time.

Abstract:In order to obtain absolute heading angle and position, lunar rover needs the support of autonomous celestial navigation system (CNS). This paper proposes a sun observation based simultaneous celestial positioning and orientation (SCPO) algorithm for the lunar rover under stationary position. Firstly we measure the sun orientation by a sun sensor and the gravity orientation by an inclinometer; secondly combine them with sun ephemeris; finally solve this problem with quaternion estimation (QUEST). By analyzing affects of the sensor's system error (such as the installation errors, bias, etc.) and random noise under stationary conditions, these two types of errors can be eliminated using joint calibration. Executing the SCPO on the moon is demonstrated through simulation. The algorithm is carried out with an experiment on the earth surface, and results demonstrate the high consistency of our simulation.
Angular velocity current statistical model based real-time celestial navigation for lunar rover

Abstract:The long-time, long-range autonomous navigation system is one of the key technologies which assist lunar rover to finish scientific exploration missions. A novel real-time celestial navigation (RCN) method is proposed to solve this problem, which is based on celestial observation and output of angular rate gyroscope. In this paper, the star's direction vector from star sensor is treated as observation for system measurement equation; kinematics model is established using this angular velocity current statistical model (ACSM) for the rover, and its attitude quaternion differential equation is treated as system state equation. Finally, the extended Kalman filter (EKF) gives the solutions of rover's position, heading and attitude. Simulation results show that this method could obtain higher celestial navigation accuracy in real-time. © 2011 Chinese Assoc of Automati.
Design and Implementation of Chang'E-3 Rover Location System

Abstract:Lunar surface is a dusty world without Earth's atmospheric pressure, with huge range of temperature varying, with only 1/6 of Earth's gravity, and with fine electrostatically charged dust. Chang'E-3 rover location system has to cruise in that harsh environment carrying multiple payloads. The requirements and working principles of Chang'E-3 rover location system were clarified, and the key points of embodiment design of driving mechanism, differential mechanism, wheel and seal were detailed. A digital model of the location system is created and optimized by numerical simulations of statics, kinetics and thermodynamics. Hundreds of tests of the location system and its assemblies are performed in simulated lunar environments on the ground to evaluate its feasibility and reliability, such as test of climbing slope, test of climbing obstacle, and test of dust preventing and mitigating, et al. Since Chang'E-3 rover moved on to the lunar surface in December 15, 2013, it has survived for 2 sidereal months in the harsh environment, and run for more than 100 meters.

Abstract:When planning lunar rover missions, it is important to develop intuition and driving skills for unfamiliar environments before incurring the costs of reaching the moon. Simulators make it possible to operate in environments that have the physical characteristics of target locations without the expense of extensive physical tests. This paper proposes a motion simulation and human–computer interaction system based on a parallel mechanism to realize high-fidelity manned lunar rover simulations. The system consists of an interactive operating platform and a lunar surface simulation environment based on Unity3D. To make the 6-DOF platform simulate the posture changes of the rover, we improved the motion simulation algorithm. We designed a posture adjustment system and built virtual sensors to help astronauts perceive the lunar environment. Finally, this paper discusses the method for the realization of the multi-channel human–computer interaction system; astronauts can interactively control the rover through five channels. Experiments show that this system can realize high-fidelity rover simulation and improve the efficiency of human-computer interaction.

Abstract:The lunar rover simulation platform discussed in this paper provides a general virtual test-bed for lunar rover research and development. The purpose of the simulation is to test the architecture, control, and sensors of rover systems. This simulation platform provides a Terrain Builder to create lunar terrain modules, and an Environment Editor to utilize these modules to create and edit virtual lunar environment. Based upon the COM technology, this simulation platform allows various rovers to join simulation, and, due to the characteristics of COM, this system is a distributed simulation system. The simulation platform and rover system can run on different computers connected with network.

Abstract:Trajectory tracking control is a necessary part for autonomous navigation of planetary rover and traction coordinating control can reduce the forces consumption during navigation. As a result, a trajectory tracking and traction coordinating controller for wheeled lunar rover with Rocker Bogie is proposed in the paper. Firstly, the longitudinal dynamics model and the kinematics model of six-wheeled rover are established. Secondly, the traction coordinating control algorithm is studied based on sliding mode theory with improved exponential approach law. Thirdly, based on kinematics analysis and traction system identification, the trajectory tracking controller is designed using optimal theory. Then, co-simulations between ADAMS and MATLAB/Simulink are carried out to validate the proposed algorithm, and the simulation results have confirmed the effectiveness of path tracking and traction mobility improving.

Abstract:A deep extraterrestrial drilling mission potentially adds a new level of complexity, and it is crucial to understand the associated challenges. To cope with China's Chang'E 5 mission to return subsurface regolith samples from the Moon, a series of laboratory tests were performed to validate the lunar robotic drilling from 2015 to 2018. The tests took place in a simulated thermal‐vacuum regolith environment, a highly relevant lunar analog site. Force and temperature sensors were integrated into a 2‐m class dry auger coring drill to assess the mechanical and thermophysical status of the sampling process. The operation of the entire testing system was automated, covering regolith penetration and data collection and storage. The science team used sensing data to characterize the subsurface geologic strata, assess the conditions of the drilling robot, and direct the sampling strategy. This experiment represents an essential first step in understanding the technology and operational requirements for lunar drilling and sampling mission. Many laboratory tests have helped guide the design and implementation of the highly successful lunar regolith‐sampling task in the Chang'E 5 mission. This paper documents the experimental system design, highlighting some critical design criteria and design tradeoffs. It also discusses the results of laboratory testing and lists some of the key technological lessons learned.

Real-time interactive dynamic simulation for a lunar rover based on terramechanics

Abstract:Traction capability experiments of a driving wheel were performed by using a wheel-terrain interaction test-bed.From the test data,an improved bulldozing resistance formula based on slip ratio of wheel was deduced.Meanwhile,according to the formula and terramechanics theories of soft soil,a lunar rover dynamic simulation system was built on Visual C++9.0 platform by using Vortex API.By comparing simulation results and experiments results of the single driving wheel,it was shown that the formula and the dynamic simulation are reliable;the model of the whole lunar rover was also set up and the real-time interactive dynamic simulation is realized through keyboard and mouse.

Abstract:The exploration and utilization of water resources on the Moon are of substantial global interest. To utilize lunar resources and construct bases, the construction machinery should travel over the lunar surface (which is mainly covered with powdery regolith) and excavate the regolith. However, various technical issues should be resolved to achieve this efficiently. In this study, a new platform rover was developed, and its motion behavior was analyzed to better understand the traveling and excavation behaviors of construction machinery on the Moon. The rover is a four-track vehicle equipped with a robotic arm consisting of a boom, arm, and bucket. To analyze the rover’s motion behavior in sandy terrain, we first developed a simulator based on terramechanics and performed a numerical analysis. Subsequently, various experiments were conducted using the rover in the JAXA Space Exploration Field, which simulates the lunar environment. In the experiments, the rover traveled over level and sloped terrains and excavated the ground. The simulation and experimental results revealed similar trends in the traveling and excavation behaviors of the rover. These results can serve as basic guidelines for the design and operation of construction machinery on the Moon.

Abstract:Wheeled ground robots are widely used in planetary exploration missions, where slip can measure problems during driving and pre-acquisition slips play an important role. The current best traditional model is a predictive model based on visual sliding learning, which is divided into two steps: determining the terrain type and constructing a geometry-based sliding model. Since the geometry-based sliding mode model is not realistic in the orbit learning, this paper introduces the possibility of applying geometric models to planetary missions. In order to conduct a more comprehensive study of geometry-based models, three new related variables have been introduced. Then the geometric model-based rain map rover prototype data obtained from the indoor experiment is applied to the rain map rover data in the Lunar Changchun No. 3 mission. The results show that terrain geometry is the main influencing factor when the simulation of local shaped materials reaches a certain level. This means that the geometry-based slip prediction model has the potential to be applied under similar conditions, and the results of the article have certain value. At the same time, this method provides another way of thinking for China’s future Mars project.

Study on the Traction Performance for the Driving wheel of Lunar Rover

Abstract:It is very important to study the traction performance of the lunar rover on lunar surface environment for guaranteeing the normal exploration on the moon. We simulated lunar soil for the lunar-terramechanic test, developed the soil bin test equipment and designed a variety of wheels. The traction test was carried on in the soil bin equipment, and it showed that the max. DP of the rug-wheel is 5.2 times as that of the smooth-wheel, and the DP of the driving wheel tested in the stimulant lunar soil is 1/6.7 times as that of the driving wheel tested on the hard pavement when the slip ratio is 10 percent. Based on experiment results, the DEM simulation was used to analyze the microcosmic relationship between the driving wheel and lunar soil particles. The force, velocity and displacement of the particles under the wheel, and the traction performance of the driving wheel without pulling resistance, were simulated. According to the results, the rug-wheel has better traffic ability than the smooth-wheel, but the rug-wheel needs more power. The research provides an essential method and basic data for the performance evaluation of the lunar rover and the development of walking mechanism with high passing ability on the lunar environment.

Abstract:<p>It is well-known that optimizing the wheel system of lunar rovers is essential. However, this is a difficult task due to the complex terrain of the moon and limited resources onboard lunar rovers. In this study, an experimental prototype was set up to analyze the existing mechanical design of a lunar rover and improve its performance. First, a new vane-telescopic walking wheel was proposed for the lunar rover with a positive and negative quadrangle suspension, considering the complex terrain of the moon. Next, the performance was optimized under the limitations of preserving the slope passage and minimizing power consumption. This was achieved via analysis of the wheel force during movement. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method was demonstrated by several simulation experiments. The newly designed wheel can protrude on demand and reduce energy consumption; it can be used as a reference for lunar rover development engineering in China.</p>

Abstract:The lunar polar regions are key areas for future exploration due to the long-term continuous illumination and persistently shadowed regions that can cold trap abundant water and other volatiles. However, the complex terrain, dynamic lighting, and solar wind-induced electric-field environment present multiple challenges for polar investigation and sampling missions. China's Chang'E-7 (CE-7) will explore the Moon's south polar region in 2026. One of the scientific goals is to drill samples in a wide area with a rover for in situ analysis. This study analyzes the engineering constraints of the polar illumination condition, slopes, and electric field for landing and sampling-site selection. Then, we create a 3D model of CE-7's lunar rover in three operating environments by employing the Spacecraft Plasma Interaction Software, with the rover sampling (i) on a flat surface, (ii) in a shadow, and (iii) near a meter-scale crater under different solar altitude angles. The results show that the rover can be charged to different potentials under the combined effects of solar wind incident angles and surrounding terrains. We find that a favorable traversing and/or sampling site of the rover for future polar exploration is in the upwind direction of a bulge (positively elevated terrains, such as the lander or boulders) or crater, which will cause a minimum charging effect on the rover. Our results have important implications for minimizing the risk of charging effects and guiding the lunar polar region exploration.

Abstract:Lunar caves are promising features for long-term and permanent human presence on the moon. However, given their inaccessibility to imaging from survey satellites, the concrete environment within the underground cavities is not well known. Thus, to further the efforts of human presence on the moon, these caves are to be explored by robotic systems. However, a set of environmental factors make this exploration particularly challenging. Among those are the very fine lunar dust that damages exposed sensors and actuators and the unknown composition of the surface and obstacles within the cavity. One robotic system that is particularly fit to meet these challenges is that of a spherical robot, as the exterior shell completely separates the sensors and actuators from the hazardous environment. This work introduces the mathematical description in the form of a dynamic model of a novel locomotion approach for this form factor that adds additional functionality. A set of telescopic linearly extending rods moves the robot using a combination of pushing away from the ground and leveraging the gravitational torque. The approach allows the system to locomote, overcome objects by hoisting its center of gravity on top, and transform into a terrestrial laser scanner by using the rods as a tripod.

Abstract:<p>The experimental execution, theoretical analysis, structural optimization and performance prediction of lunar rover wheels are subject to many limitations due to the particularity and complexity of the lunar environment. The numerical simulation has notable advantages in analyzing the interaction between wheels and lunar soil simulant and designing the lunar rover wheels applied to complex environments. In this paper, based on the theory of terramechanics, a three-dimensional (3D) dynamic system that simulated the interaction between irregular structure wheels and lunar soil simulant was established using the interface code and embedded FISH language of PFC3D. The rationality of the simulation system was verified by the wheel soil-bin test. Then, in order to improve and optimize the 3D dynamic simulation system, the interaction between wheel and lunar soil simulant was simulated in two different kinds of simulated lunar environments besides the flat ground, and the climbing property of the wheel was analyzed qualitatively. Finally, the mesoscopic changes of lunar soil stimulant particles were characterized by the color gradient variations, and the simulation results were processed in the IV program so that the distribution of lunar soil stimulant particles under the wheel could be observed more clearly. This research provided a reliable method for the study of the interaction between irregular wheel and loose lunar soil in complex environments and of designing the wheel structure.</p>

Abstract:The International Lunar Research Station, to be established around 2030, will equip lunar rovers with robotic arms as constructors. Construction requires lunar soil and lunar rovers, for which rovers must go toward different waypoints without encountering obstacles in a limited time due to the short day, especially near the south pole. Traditional planning methods, such as uploading instructions from the ground, can hardly handle many rovers moving on the moon simultaneously with high efficiency. Therefore, we propose a new collaborative path-planning method based on deep reinforcement learning, where the heuristics are demonstrated by both the target and the obstacles in the artificial potential field. Environments have been randomly generated where small and large obstacles and different waypoints are created to collect resources, train the deep reinforcement learning agent to propose actions, and lead the rovers to move without obstacles, finish rovers' tasks, and reach different targets. The artificial potential field created by obstacles and other rovers in every step affects the action choice of the rover. Information from the artificial potential field would be transformed into rewards in deep reinforcement learning that helps keep distance and safety. Experiments demonstrate that our method can guide rovers moving more safely without turning into nearby large obstacles or collision with other rovers as well as consuming less energy compared with the multi-agent A-Star path-planning algorithm with improved obstacle avoidance method.
