Abstract:Abstract; The compatibility of 1, 3, 3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ) with some common materials such as HMX, RDX, NC, C2 , NG was researched by using the DSC method. It was concluded that the compatibility of TNAZ with HMX, RDX is better and good respectively, and with NC, C2, NG is worse, worse and bad respectively.

Abstract:The compatibility of trans-1,4,5,8-tetranitro-1,4,5,8-tetraazadecalin (TNAD) with some energetic components and inert materials of solid propellants was studied by using the pressure DSC method where, cyclotetramethylenetetranitroamine (HMX), cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine (RDX), 1,4-dinitropiperazine (DNP), 1.25/1-NC/NG mixture, lead 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-onate (NTO–Pb), aluminum powder (Al, particle size=13.6μm) and N-nitrodihydroxyethylaminedinitrate (DINA) were used as energetic components and polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyoxytetramethylene-co-oxyethylene (PET), addition product of hexamethylene diisocyanate and water (N-100), 2-nitrodianiline (2-NDPA), 1,3-dimethyl-1,3-diphenyl urea (C2), carbon black (C.B.), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), cupric 2,4-dihydroxy-benzoate (β-Cu), cupric adipate (AD-Cu) and lead phthalate (φ-Pb) were used as inert materials. It was concluded that the binary systems of TNAD with NTO–Pb, RDX, PET and Al powder are compatible, and systems of TNAD with DINA and HMX are slightly sensitive, and with 2-NDPA, φ-Pb, β-Cu, AD-Cu and Al2O3 are sensitive, and with PEG, N-100, C2 and C.B. are incompatible. The impact and friction sensitivity data of the TNAD and TNAD in combination with the other energetic materials under present study was also obtained, and there was no consequential affiliation between sensitivity and compatibility.

Abstract:The thermodynamic parameters of the melting process, the kinetic parameters of the exothermic decomposition reaction and the critical temperature of thermal explosion for 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ) were measured by using a microcalorimeter, a differenctial scanning calorimeter and a time-to-explosion testing apparaturs, respectively. Information was obtained on its thermal behavior.

Abstract:1,3,3-Trinitroazetidine (TNAZ) has a molecular formula of C3 H4 N4 O6 and the characteristics of low melting point, low impact sensitivity and good thermal stability. It is suitable for melt casting and pressed charges, and it has broad prospects for applications in low-sensitivity ammunition. In this study, the thermal decomposition of TNAZ crystals at high temperature was calculated by molecular dynamics simulation with the ReaxFF/lg reactive force field. The change in the potential energy of TNAZ, the formation of small-molecule products and clusters, and the initial reaction path of TNAZ were analysed. The kinetic parameters of different reaction stages in TNAZ thermal decomposition were obtained. The primary thermal decomposition reaction of TNAZ was found to be as follows: N-NO2 and C-NO2 bonds broke; a H atom on the quaternary ring was transferred to the nitro group; and the C-HNO2 and N-HNO2 bonds broke. The main decomposition products of TNAZ were thus NO2 , NO, N2 , H2 O, CO2 and HNO2 , as well as macromolecular clusters. The size of the cluster structure was related to the reaction temperature, and the higher the temperature was, the smaller the cluster size was.

Abstract:In this paper, the thermal decomposition behavior of 3,5-difluoro-2,4,6-trinitroanisole (DFTNAN) was studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) by using different heating rates (2, 5, 10, 15 °C·min−1). Subsequently, the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of non-isothermal thermal decomposition of DFTNAN were calculated. The critical temperature of thermal explosion (Tb) and self-accelerating decomposition temperature (TASDT) were determined to be 249.03 °C and 226.33 °C, respectively. The compatibility of DFTNAN with a number of high explosives (cyclo-1,3,5-trimethylene-2,4,6-trinitramine (RDX), 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine (HMX), 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaaza-tetracyclo-[5.5.0.05,9.03,11]-dodecane (CL-20) and dihydroxylammonium 5,5’-bistetrazole-1,1’-diolate (TKX-50)) was studied at different mass ratios using DSC. The criteria to judge the compatibility between the materials were based on a standardization agreement (STANAG 4147). The thermodynamic study results revealed that DFTNAN possessed superior thermal safety and stability. The experimental of compatibility results indicated that the mass ratios of the high explosives in the DFTNAN/RDX, DFTNAN/HMX and DFTNAN/CL-20 compositions more than 40%, 60% and 70% exhibited good compatibility, whereas DFTNAN/TKX-50 demonstrated poor compatibility.

Abstract:The systematical thermal behaviors of 3⁃azido⁃1,3⁃dinitroazetidine (ADNAZ) was investigated in this research and compared with those of 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ). The results showed that ADNAZ has a low melting temperature at 78 °C. The final mass loss of ADNAZ under atmospheric pressure is 88.2%. Compared to TNAZ, the replacement of gem-dinitro group with gemazidonitro group makes greatly reduce vapor pressure, melting point as well as the thermal decomposition temperature. The in-situ FTIR spectroscopy of ADNAZ proved the strength of nitro group decreases faster than that of azide group, and a carbonyl group (C=O) was formed at the quaternary carbon center on the azetidine skeleton during heating process. TG/DSC–FTIR–MS quadruple technology was applied, finding small molecular fragments from ADNAZ’s thermolysis includes H2 (m/z = 2), H2O (m/z = 18), CN (m/z = 26), HCN (m/z = 27), N2 (m/z = 28), NO (m/z = 30), C2H2O (m/z = 42), HN3 (m/z = 43), CO2 (m/z = 44), and NO2 (m/z = 46). A detailed decomposition mechanism was proposed based on the experimental results.

Abstract:A phase diagram of 1,3,3-trinitroazetidine(TNAZ) and 3,4-dinitrofurazanofuroxan(DNTF) was drawn by Origin software. The thermal stability,sensitivity,energetic performance and the exudation of the eutectic mixture were characterized, in order to design a potential TNT replacement for melt-cast explosive.The results showed that when the weight percent of TNAZ was 60%,the mixture had the lowest melting point of 79.0℃.The eutectic mixture had good thermal stability, moderate mechanical sensitivity, its electrostatics sensitivity were superior to Comp.B. Furthermore, another advantage of eutectic mixture was that there was no exudates at 70℃ for 6h.The results indicated that the eutectic mixture was a potential replacement of TNT for melt-cast explosive.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition performance and compatibility of 4,10-dinitro-2,6,8,12-tatraoxa-4, 10-diazatatracyclo [5,5,0,05 ,9 ,03 ,11 ]-decane (TEX)with main components of propellants such as cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine(RDX),N-nitrodihydroxyethylaminedinitrate (DINA),nitrocellulose (NC),absorbentia (NC + NG), diethylphthalate(DEP),leadphthalate(Φ-Pb)and aluminium powder (micron order)were studied by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC).The results show that TEX is relatively stable to heat,the binary system of TEX was compatible with RDX,Φ-Pb,NC,DINA and aluminium powder,and was slightly sensitive with absorbentia(NC+NG)and NC.Thus TEX can be used as component in propellants.

Abstract:To evaluate the stability, heat-resistance ability and thermal safety of MNPP(1H,4H-3-methyl-6-nitro-pyrazolo[4,3-c] pyrazole), CNPP (1H, 4H-3-carboxy-6 -nitro-pyrazolo[4,3-c] pyrazole), DNPP (1H, 4H-3,6-dinitro-pyrazolo [4,3-c] pyrazole), the theoretical investigation on MNPP, CNPP and DNPP was performed by the DFT-B3LYP/6-31G level using Gaussian 09W program. The theoretical density (rho) of the compounds was obtained by quantum chemical method. The Kamlet-Jacobs formulas were employed to calculate the detonation properties including the detonation velocity (D) and pressure (P). Their thermal behaviors were investigated by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), Thermogravimetry-Derivative Thermogravimetry (TG-DTG) and in-situ cell thermolysis/Rapid-Scan Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (RSFT-IR). Results show that (1) using critical temperature of thermal explosion, free energy of activation of decomposition reaction and self-accelerating decomposition temperature as criterions, the thermal stability, heat resistance ability and thermal safety of the three compounds decrease in the order of DNPP > MNPP > CNPP, but using energy gap and total energy as criterions, the thermal stability decreases in the order of DNPP > CNPP > MNPP, therefore, DNPP is the most stable compound among the three compounds; (2) Among of the three compounds, DNPP possesses the maximum theoretical density (1.80 g.cm(-3)), the fastest detonation velocity (8.49 km.s(-1)) and the highest detonation pressure (31.96 GPa), suggesting that DNPP has good detonation properties and potential use in energetic material.

Abstract:Compositions based on 2,4-dinitroanisole (DNAN) with several cyclic nitramines, namely 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazinane (RDX) and β-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocane (β-HMX), cis-1,3,4,6-tetranitrooctahydroimidazo-[4,5-d]imidazole (BCHMX), and ε-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaazaisowurtzitane (ε-CL20) were prepared and studied in comparison with 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) compositions. Impact and friction sensitivities, combustion heats, detonation velocities and relative explosive strengths (RS) were determined for these mixtures. Detonation parameters were calculated by means of the Explo5 thermodynamic code. The difference between the TNT and DNAN compositions was shown by the relationships between RS and the energy outputs of the prepared mixtures. The results show better sensitivity characteristics for DNAN composition in comparison with same compositions containing TNT.

Abstract:Nano octahydro-1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetrazocine(HMX) was prepared by the use of pulverized machine HLG-50.The size distribution was traced by the nano laser particle size analyzer,and the particle size was characterized by SEM.The contaminants were detected by the use of FT-IR,Raman spectra,XRD and ICP-AES.The thermal decomposition of nano HMX was described by the TG/DSC simultaneous thermal analyzer.The friction,impact and shock sensitivities were tested to indicate the stability.The result shows that the diameters of the most particles are less than 100 nm and the impurities in the product were absolutely few.The peak temperature of its thermal decomposition decreased a little compared with the raw materials.The friction sensitivity reduced by a large margin,particularly the impact and the shock sensitivities decreased 132.6% and 60.0%,respectively.The stability increased so much that there would be a good application.By the way,the mechanism of reduced sensitivity was discussed.

Abstract:As an important high density energetic material, synthesis and application of 1, 3, 3-trinitroazetidine (TNAZ) are desirable. In this paper TNAZ was synthesized in 34% overall yield using a five-step synthetic route starting from nitromethane, paraformaldehyde and tert-butylamine. The structures of intermediates and TNAZ were determined by IR, H-1 NMR, C-13 NMR and MS spectra. Except the third and fifth steps, water was used as reaction media, which decreased production cost of TNAZ and environmental pollution. The conditions and factors on reaction conversion rate were also discussed.

Abstract:Thermal decomposition study of diammonium 5,5′-bistetrazole-1,1′-diolate (ABTOX) was investigated by using DSC. The result showed that ABTOX is less thermal sensitive than TKX-50. The kinetic parameters (E = 139.82 kJ mol−1 and lgA = 12.75 s−1) for thermal decomposition reaction of ABTOX were obtained. The compatibility of ABTOX with 1,3,5-trinitro-1,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), 1,3,5,7-tetranitro-1,3,5,7-tetraazacyclooctane (HMX), 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitro-2,4,6,8,10,12-hexaza-isowurtzitane (CL-20), 3-nitro-1,2,4-triazol-5-one (NTO), 1,1-diamino-2,2-dinitroethene (FOX-7), 2,6-diamino-3,5-dinitropyrazine-1-oxide (LLM-105), aluminum powder (Al), Estane-TPU-5702 and two kinds of fluoropolymers (F-2311 and F-2603) were evaluated by using DSC. The results showed that CL-20/ABTOX, FOX-7/ABTOX and F-2603/ABTOX were exhibiting good compatibility and RDX/ABTOX and Al/ABTOX had moderate compatibility. In addition, the compatibility of ABTOX with Estane-TPU-5702 and F-2311 was not good. HMX/ABTOX, NTO/ABTOX and LLM-105/ABTOX had poor compatibility. Furthermore, the self-accelerating decomposition temperature was calculated to be 152 °C and 150 °C in commercial wooden and PE cylinder, respectively.

Abstract:A new high energetic density material,N-acetyl-3,3-dinitroazetidine(ADNAZ),was synthesized with advantages as low melting point,high density,insensitive to detonation on impact and forming a eutectic with TNAZ which can be shaped charge antitank weapons or be used energetic carrier for higher melting meaterial such as HMX and the like.ADNAZ was synthesized by a five-steps reaction,using nitromethane,paraformaldehyde and tert-butylamine etc.as starting materials,with overall yield of 42.8%.Some factors affecting yield of ADNAZ was also discussed.The structures of intermediates and ADNAZ were confirmed by IR,HNMR,CNMR and MS.

Abstract:N,N'-Dinitro-4,4'-azo-bis(1,2,4-triazolone) (DNZTO) is synthesized by the reaction of 4,4'-azo-bistriazolone (ZTO) with a mixture of nitric acid and acetic anhydride. The product was fully characterized by IR, NMR, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, and single-crystal X-ray analysis. The explosive performance including detonation pressures (P), velocities (D) of DNZTO, and heats of formation were predicted using GAUSSIAN 09 at B3LYP/6-311+G**.

Abstract:The thermal decomposition characteristics of1,7-diazido-2,4,6-trinitrazaheptane (DATH) and multi-component systems containing DATH were studied by using DSC, TG and DTG techniques. Three –NO 2 groups in the DATH molecule break away first from the main chain when DATH is heated up to 200°C. Following this process, the azido groups and the residual molecule decompose rapidly to release a great deal of heat within a short time. In the multi-component systems, DATH undergoes a strong interaction with the binder of the double-base propellant and a weak interaction with RDX. The burning rates of the two propellants were determined by using a Crawford bomb. The results showed that the burning rate rises by about 19–66% when 23.5%DATH is substituted for RDX in a minimum smoke propellant. Meanwhile, the N 2 level in the combustion gases is enhanced, which is valuable for a reduction of the signal level of the solid propellant.

Abstract:Although the N-nitration by nitric acid is widely used to synthesize nitramines in biological, medical, and explosive industries, little is known about the microscopic behavior when the nitrated substrates are tertiary amines. Hexahydro-1,3,5-triacetyl-s-triazine (TRAT) nitrated into hexahydro-1,3,5-trinitro-s-triazine (RDX) was theoretically investigated at the MP2/cc-PVDZ level. An O-to-N transnitration mechanism was put forward for the N-nitration of N-acetyl tertiary amines, including the formation of diverse complexes R'N(COCH3)RNO2(+) and deacetylate. The electron transfer results in the complex formation, and the acetyl-to-nitro electrophilic displacement leads to deacetylate. Presumably, the carbonyl groups (C═O) in N-acetyl tertiary amines serve as the hinged joint in the electron transfer. Three successive N-nitrations transform TRAT into RDX; their electron transfers are strongly exothermic by -21.1, -19.5, and -15.4 kcal/mol relative to TRAT + 3NO2(+), repectively, and their electrophilic displacements possess low activation Gibbs free energies of 9.0, 6.8, and 7.5 kcal/mol relative to the σ-complexes 6, 11, and 14, respectively. The rate constants of the single electron transfer (SET) and the acetyl-to-nitro displacement were estimated roughly by Marcus and transition-state (TS) theories, respectively, indicating that they are both fast with the strong exothermicity. The available experimental phenomena were well interpreted by the computational results.

Abstract:A novel synthetic method of the 1, 3, 5-trinitro-2, 2-bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,5-triazinane (2) has been successfully developed. In addition to IR, H-1 C-13 NMR and elemental analysis, compound 2 was characterized by N-15 NMR and X-ray single crystal diffraction. Due to the introduction of trifluoromethyl, the density of compound 2 is up to 2.04 g.cm(-3) at 298 K, which is consistent with its crystal density (2.059 g.cm(-3), 296(2) K). Compound 2 exhibits excellent detonation pressures and velocities (P, 45.6 GPa; v(D), 9564 m.s(-1)), as good as exceptional impact and friction sensitivities(IS, 22.5 J; FS, >360 J). Some of these values are better than the current benchmark explosives, such as 1, 3, 5-trinitrodihydro-1, 3, 5-triazine (RDX) and cyclo-1, 3, 5, 7-tetramethylenene-2, 4, 6, 8-tetranitramine (HMX).It is a potential high energy density material.
Thermal Decomposition and Safety Assessment of 3,3′-Dinitrimino-5,5′-bis(1 H-1,2,4-triazole) by DTA and ARC

Abstract:Thermal decomposition and safety assessment of 3,3′-dinitrimino-5,5′-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazole) (DNABT) were investigated by thermogravimetry–derivative thermogravimetry–differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DTG-DSC), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and accelerating rate calorimetry (ARC). The result of TG-DTG-DSC at a heating rate of 10 °C min−1 indicated that an endothermic decomposition and an exothermic decomposition occurred at 133.98 and 210.86 °C, respectively. The apparent activation energy (Ea) and pre-exponential factor (A) of the exothermic decomposition, and the free energy of activation, activation enthalpy, and activation entropy at initial decomposition temperature (Tp0) were calculated from the DTA curves recorded at the heating rates of 1, 2, 4, 8 °C min−1. The critical temperature of thermal explosion (Tbp0) obtained by Ozawa’s and Kissinger’s methods were calculated as 205.01 and 205.14 °C, respectively. The result of ARC indicated that the self-heating decomposition started at 200.22 °C and ended at 232.66 °C. The self-heating decomposition parameters, including the onset temperature, final temperature, temperature at maximum rate, maximum temperature rate, adiabatic temperature rise, and time to maximum rate were obtained, and these parameters were corrected by thermal inertia factor. The Ea and A under adiabatic condition were also calculated. In addition, the self-accelerating decomposition temperature (TSADT, 50kg) was calculated as 175.37 °C. These results could contribute to improve the safety in the reaction, transportation, and storage processes of DNABT.
