Abstract:Time–frequency (TF) analysis (TFA) method is an effective tool to characterize the time-varying feature of a signal, which has drawn many attentions in a fairly long period. With the development of TFA, many advanced methods are proposed, which can provide more precise TF results. However, some restrictions are introduced inevitably. In this paper, we introduce a novel TFA method, termed as general linear chirplet transform (GLCT), which can overcome some limitations existed in current TFA methods. In numerical and experimental validations, by comparing with current TFA methods, some advantages of GLCT are demonstrated, which consist of well-characterizing the signal of multi-component with distinct non-linear features, being independent to the mathematical model and initial TFA method, allowing for the reconstruction of the interested component, and being non-sensitivity to noise.

Abstract:The linearity, time shifting, time scaling, and time inversion properties of FMmlet transform are proved, and the frequency shifting property of one of the subspaces of FMmlet transform, namely the chirplet transform is presented. Moreover, it is proved that in the process of FMmlet based atomic signal decomposition, the residual signals decay exponentially.

Abstract:The standard chirplet transform (CT) with the chirp-modulated Gaussian window provides a valuable tool for analyzing linear chirp signals. The parameters present in the window determine the performance of the CT and play a vital role in high-resolution time-frequency (TF) analysis. In this paper, we give the window shape analysis of the CT and compare it with the extension that employs a rotating Gaussian window by the fractional Fourier transform. The given parameters analysis provides theoretical guid-ance for developing high-resolution CT. We then propose a multi-resolution chirplet transform (MrCT) by combining multiple CTs with different parameter combinations. These are combined geometrically to obtain an improved TF resolution by overcoming the limitations of any single representation of the CT. We further develop a TF post-processing approach to enhance the readability of the MrCT by deriving a combined instantaneous frequency equation, which can characterize the mixture of the chirp-like and impulse-like signals. Numerical experiments on simulated and real signals verify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches.(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier B.V.

On the Choice of Parameters for the Chirplet Transform

Abstract:Considering that the Chirplet transform (CT) results can not efficiently present the time-frequency (TF) representations of a signal without suitable parameters, a measurement method was proposed on how to choose the optimal values of parameters of the Chirplet transform for the signal to be analyzed. Different from the method used in the modified Chirplet transform, in our method the problem of the scale parameter selection is transformed into that of parameters optimization. The best scale parameter depends on the input of the chirp rate both in time and frequency. Suitable choose of the two parameters as input can get the best scale parameter. With these three parameters the Chirplet transform results will have much higher TF resolution. The dual-component chirp signals and the seismic sedimentary signal are analyzed with this method, and it is found that in the TF plane the two Chirp signals can be clearly presented which can not be distinguished by the short-time-Fourier-transform and the wavelet transform, and the rules of rhyming of the sedimentary signal can be exactly depicted. This shows that the method is a powerful tool for the sedimentary signal analysis using the seismic data.

Image Compression Via 2-D Real Discrete Chirplets

Abstract:In this paper, we apply the 2-D real discrete chirplet transform to image compression. Instead of the pixel-based image representation, an image can be represented as only a few 2-D real discrete chirplet atoms if we use the 2-D real discrete chirplet transform based on matching pursuit. To reduce the computational complexity of the direct computation of 2-D real discrete chirplet transform, we develop a separable 2-D real discrete chirplet atom. Experimental results demonstrate that both a high compression ratio and a good quality of the reconstructed image can be achieved. Compared with JPEG, the chirplet transform has no blocking artificial effect at high compression ratio.
High-Order Synchrosqueezed Chirplet Transforms for Multicomponent Signal Analysis

Abstract:This study focuses on the analysis of signals containing multiple components with crossover instantaneous frequencies (IF). This problem was initially solved with the chirplet transform (CT). Also, it can be sharpened by adding the synchrosqueezing step, which is called the synchrosqueezed chirplet transform (SCT). However, we found that the SCT goes wrong with the high chirp modulation signal due to the wrong estimation of the IF. In this paper, we present the improvement of the post-transformation of the CT. The main goal of this paper is to amend the estimation introduced in the SCT and carry out the high-order synchrosqueezed chirplet transform. The proposed method reduces the wrong estimation when facing a stronger variety of chirp-modulated multi-component signals. The theoretical analysis of the new reassignment ingredient is provided. Numerical experiments on some synthetic signals are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed high-order SCT.

Abstract:Because of the low frequency resolution,it's difficult to effectively analyze the spectrum characteristics of beat vibration signal of the Horizontally Helix-centrifugal using FFT.This paper compares two often used zoom methods: ZFFT and CZT,points out the superiority of the CZT.CZT can zoom the interesting band and get a precise frequency without increasing the number of sampling points.The analysis of simulative signal and actual signal shows that CZT has a great application perspective in beat vibration signal processing of the Horizontally Helix-centrifugal.

Abstract:We propose a novel method, called chirplet path fusion, to analyze nonstationary signals with time-varying frequencies. As opposed to many existing methods that assume the signal persists throughout the whole time, the proposed method can be applied in cases where the signals are only present in short time frames. A demodulation-operator-based method is introduced to estimate the locally matched chirplet atoms which can form a chirplet path in the time-frequency domain. According to the density of the multiple chirplet paths obtained under different scales, the effective time support and the instantaneous frequency (IF) of the target signal can be estimated. Our method is effective in analyzing the nonstationary signal with discontinuous IF curve and works well under heavy noise. Several simulated signals and the vibration signal of a rotor test rig are considered to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:Gyrator transform is a useful tool for information processing that produces twisted rotations in position-spatial frequency planes of phase space and belongs to the class of linear canonical integral transformations. In this paper, we presented a new twisting type of transform by using a different fractionalization process. Unlike the gyrator transform, the newly defined transform cannot be decomposed into a product of two one-dimensional transforms. Therefore it has a better capability of information-tangling than gyrator transform. The transform can be implemented by a photoelectric hybrid setup. Based on the new transform and a chaotic map, we proposed a watermarking scheme of which the viability and performance are demonstrated by means of numerical simulations.

Abstract:By theoretical analyzing and simulation,the effectiveness of the chirp-Z transformation used in the spectrum zooming analyses has been proved,but the limitation of this method is also point out,especially the frequency' s discrimination will be limited by the fs/N also.Although it gives us a way to get a rather precision value of a single frequency,it can not discriminate two close frequen- cies effectively because the power leakage.The readout of the frequencies will vary from the actual values largely,and the error can be as high as 50% of the discrimination.

Abstract:The graph linear canonical transform (GLCT) is presented as an extension of the graph Fourier transform (GFT) and the graph fractional Fourier transform (GFrFT), offering more flexibility as an effective tool for graph signal processing. In this paper, we introduce a GLCT based on chirp multiplication-chirp convolution-chirp multiplication decomposition (CM-CC-CM-GLCT), which irrelevant to sampling periods and without oversampling operation. Various properties and special cases of the CM-CC-CM-GLCT are derived and discussed. In terms of computational complexity, additivity, and reversibility, we compare the CM-CC-CM-GLCT and the GLCT based on the central discrete dilated Hermite function (CDDHFs-GLCT). Theoretical analysis demonstrates that the computational complexity of the CM-CC-CM-GLCT is significantly reduced. Simulation results indicate that the CM-CC-CM-GLCT achieves similar additivity to the CDDHFs-GLCT. Notably, the CM-CC-CM-GLCT exhibits better reversibility.

Abstract:The Fractional Fourier Transform is a ubiquitous signal processing tool in basic and applied sciences. The Fractional Fourier Transform generalizes every property and application of the Fourier Transform. Despite the practical importance of the discrete fractional Fourier transform, its applications in digital communications have been elusive. The convolution property of the discrete Fourier transform plays a vital role in designing multi-carrier modulation systems. Here we report a closed-form affine discrete fractional Fourier transform and we show the circular convolution property for it. The proposed approach is versatile and generalizes the discrete Fourier transform and can find applications in Fourier based signal processing tools.

Abstract:As an extension of the 2D fractional Fourier transform (FRFT) and a special case of the 2D linear canonical transform (LCT), the gyrator transform was introduced to produce rotations in twisted space/spatial-frequency planes. It is a useful tool in optics, signal processing and image processing. In this paper, we develop discrete gyrator transforms (DGTs) based on the 2D LCT. Taking the advantage of the additivity property of the 2D LCT, we propose three kinds of DGTs, each of which is a cascade of low-complexity operators. These DGTs have different constraints, characteristics, and properties, and are realized by different computational algorithms. Besides, we propose a kind of DGT based on the eigenfunctions of the gyrator transform. This DGT is an orthonormal transform, and thus its comprehensive properties, especially the additivity property, make it more useful in many applications. We also develop an efficient computational algorithm to significantly reduce the complexity of this DGT. At the end, a brief review of some important applications of the DGTs is presented, including mode conversion, sampling and reconstruction, watermarking, and image encryption.

Abstract:This paper proposes a method of devising a nonnegative Time-frequency distribution (TFD) for displaying the decomposition results of FM(m)let transform. Underlying this method are the facts that the chirplet is a special case of FM(m)let and that the Wigner-ville distribution (WVD) of Gaussian chirplet is nonnegative. The true essence of the method is to migrate the values of WVDs of Gaussian chirplets to the positions of Instantaneous frequencies (IFs) of the best matched FM(m)let atoms for different signal components. The relative merits and usefulness of the resulting TFD are twofold: First, it is nonnegative; second, its localization is identical to that of WVD. Therefore, the resulting TFD is more flexible and advantageous for delineating the time-varying spectral contents of a nonstationary signal.

Abstract:Estimating the chirpiness of a spatial chirp signal is important in many optical engineering applications. With the help of transformation optics, a new kind of fractional Fourier transform lens is designed by deforming the conventional graded index lens through conformal mapping, which can manipulate the chirpiness of the input chirp signal. The low-input chirpiness is magnified by the transformation material, and the error of the detection is kept approximately the same; thus, the designed lens has enhanced chirpiness detection precision and distinguishability for low chirpiness. The design is validated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Chirplet transform (CT) is effective in characterization of instantaneous frequency (IF) for monocomponent linear-frequency-modulated signal. However, the CT is not suitable to analyze multicomponent signal with nonlinear-frequency-modulated component. In this paper, a time-frequency fusion technique based on polynomial CT (PCT) (TFPCT) is proposed to characterize the time-frequency structure of such signals. The TFPCT relies on the fact that the PCT is able to concentrate the energy closely along the IF of the monocomponent signal in time-frequency distribution (TFD). For multicomponent signal, the TFPCT first estimates the proper coefficients with respect to individual component and, second, produces a series of the TFD using the PCT. Each TFD has better energy concentration along the IF of one component. Then, in order to reduce the interference of unwanted component and preserve the component of interest, each TFD is filtered and grouped as an image. At last, the TFPCT combines these TFDs to be an eventual fused TFD, which has the energy concentrating closely along the IF of all components. Comparison with several conventional TFD methods on both numerical multicomponent signal and bat echolocation signal validates the potential and the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we explore the relationships between FM-let transform and some of the existing integral transforms, namely, the chirplet transform, dispersion transform, wavelet transform, chirp-Fourier transform, Short-time fourier transform (STFT), Gabor transform, Fourier transform, cosine transform, sine transform, Hartley transform, Laplace transform, z-transform, Mellin transform, Hilbert transform, autocorrelation function, cross-correlation function, energy, and the mean value. It is shown that all of these transforms are subspaces of FMm let transform with specific parameters.
