Abstract:Computer graphics has become an important discipline in both academia and industry, and an enabling technology for a broad variety of applications such as engineering (CAD, CAE and CAM), geographic information systems (GIS), publishing, office applications, games and the filmmaking industry. Graphics is also integrated to Internet application systems, and graphics and image techniques are combined together in some special applications. Computer graphics can no longer be regarded as a confined discipline devoted solely to graphics standards or traditional techniques of 3D representations and rendering. The influence of computer graphics and its related techniques can be felt in almost all of today's key industrial areas, wherever computers are employed.Computer graphics has been a subject of interest in China for many years. Primary overviews of computer graphics activities in China were presented in [9] (on research and industry) and [8] (on education). In addition, there was also a special journal issue on computer graphics in China [10]. However, computer graphics activities in Hong Kong [7] and Macao were not included in these materials. Furthermore some new achievements were achieved in the past years. For example, in the State Key Lab of CAD&CG, Zhejiang University, a four-sided CAVE was installed in 1999. In addition, nowadays virtual reality (VR) is a hot research topic. In China researchers have attained many achievements in various VR fields. We will emphasize this aspect as we introduce computer graphics activities in China.This article gives an overview of the research and development of computer graphics in China, including the mainland of China, Hong Kong and Macao. The article is organized as follows. The next section introduces computer graphics research in some major universities and institutes in China. The section following that presents some industrial activities in computer graphics in China. The next section presents some other activities related to computer graphics. The final section gives closing comments.

Abstract:Computer graphics education started in China in the late 1970s and has expanded considerably during the last 10 years. Universities all over the country have computer graphics in their programs, In addition, there are job training courses for students and training seminars for computer graphics educators and researchers. Computer graphics knowledge can be acquired in universities and training centers, and computer graphics education usually forms part of a curriculum of a more general subject (usually computer science).Academic education in China takes place at universities, where three levels of education programs are offered. The undergraduate student program, which leads to a bachelor's degree, takes four to five years. At this level, an introduction to the basics of computer graphics and related subjects is given. Key universities, such as Tsinghua University, Nanjing University and Zhejiang University, provide undergraduate courses on computer graphics.The graduate student program, which leads to a master's degree, takes two and one-half to three years. Here the depth of the subject increases and a special subfield can be chosen. Students have some required courses and many optional courses. The graduate study ends with the master's thesis which allows students to go deeper into a special field. Many universities offer the master's degree in computer graphics.At the highest level is the Ph.D. candidate program which leads to a doctorate and takes three to four years. For a doctorate, a written dissertation is required. In the first three semesters, the Ph.D. candidate may take several courses related to his research topic. For example, if the Ph.D. student's research topic is computer graphics, he or she may take courses such as realistic graphics, geometric modeling or computer-aided design. In China, only some key universities offer the Ph.D. degree to students in the field of computer graphics.

Abstract:We adopt a spherical texture mapping technique to simulate the varied width of the stroke on the outlines of the models and eliminate the black area that may appear on the model surface in certain situations. The brightness of the stroke is controlled by the dot product between viewing direction and the normal direction of the surface. We achieved real-time rendering of 3D character models and walk-through of characters in a 3D scene.

Abstract:The existing three-dimensional visualisation of mining subsidence cannot fully convey the original landscape in the mining area. By using GIS and coupling the predicted result of subsidence in different mining stages with the original elevation data, a dynamic visualisation of mining process is approached, which could reflect geomorphologic features clearly. Furthermore, it visually shows the variation and the characterisation of the surface subsidence, according to which one can analyse and evaluate the degree of mining subsidence damage. The generated information, such as slope, aspect, stagnant water area and the amount of settlement volume calculation, could provide technical support for reclamation work while mining is in process.

Computer Graphics in China: A practical approach for real-time illumination estimation of outdoor videos

Abstract:AbstractIn augmented reality, consistent illumination is an important aspect of integrating a virtual object into a video of a real scene. In this paper, we propose a novel image-based framework to estimate online the dynamically changing illumination parameters of outdoor video sequences captured by a fixed or pure rotation camera. Unlike previous approaches, which either require knowledge of the scene geometry or significant storage to preserve time- and view-dependent basis images or statistical parameters, our approach requires a very simple interaction at the initialization stage: a few brushes are used to select areas with a specified normal surface, and these areas are used to calculate the sunlight parameters. Additional areas with the same normal parameters will be detected automatically, and an optimization procedure is applied to ensure the robustness and precision of our estimation. Our new approach adapts to videos of the same scene with varied sun positions and camera panning. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of our proposed approach.

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to probe research progress and focus points,show the general research and application status of image engineering in China,establish a comprehensive understanding of the discipline,and provide a foundation for further development.Based on the data in a 15 year survey series of image engineering in China,a statistical investigation of the ratio of publications in major journals,the trends of publication number development,and the number of related publications for all categories and sub-categories was conducted.The selection and number of publications in all categories were presented.Some analysis and discussion about the statistics made on the results of classification by journals and categories was also provided.This study not only reveals a strong tendency of continuing development in image engineering in China while showing a general and candid picture of the progress of image engineering over the past 15 years,but also provides some useful information for those researching and working in this discipline.

Abstract:Grid computing presents a new trend to distributed computation and Internet applications, which can construct a virtual single image of heterogeneous resources, provide uniform application interface and integrate widespread computational resources into super, ubiquitous and transparent aggregation. In the adoption of Grid computing, China, who is facing more resource heterogeneity and other specific demands, has put much effort on both research and practical utilization. In this paper, we introduce the major China Grid research projects and their perspective applications. First we give the overview of the four government-sponsored programs in Grid, namely the China National Grid, ChinaGrid, NSFC Grid, and ShanghaiGrid. Then we present six representative ongoing Grid systems in details, which are categorized into Grid middleware and Grid application. This paper provides the general picture of Grid computing in China, and shows the great efforts, devotion and confidence in China to use Grid technology to boost the society, economics and scientific research.

Abstract:This is the fifteenth annual bibliographies in the survey series on image engineering in China.The purpose of this survey work is mainly to capture the up-to-date development of image engineering in China,to provide a convenient means of literature searching facility for readers working in related areas,and to supply a useful reference for the editors of journals and potential authors of papers.Considering the wide distribution of related publications in China,1008 references on image engineering research and technique are selected carefully from 3604 research papers published in 134 issues of a set of 15 Chinese journals.These 15 journals are considered as important journals in which papers concerning image engineering have higher quality.Those selected references are classified first into 5 categories(image processing,image analysis,image understanding,technique application and survey),and then into 23 specialized classes according to their main contents(same as last year).Some analysis and discussions about the statistics made on the results of classifications by journal and by category are also presented.This work shows a general and off-the-shelf picture of the various progresses of image engineering in China in 2009,it should be pointed out particularly that,in 2009 the number of research papers for image engineering,published in the above 15 journals still maintains an increase and attends a new high stage in the history.A strong tendency of continuing development of image engineering in China is clearly visible.In addition,taking the opportunity of 15th year of survey,some further statistics and analyses on the selections of publications and numbers of publications in all categories are provided on the basis of dividing the 15 years into three five-year separately.Thus,the readers could obtain even more complete and reliable information than before.

It should be pointed out particularly that, in 2007 the number of research papers for image engineering, published in the above 15 journals has greatly increased and staged in a new era in the history. A tendency of continuous development of image engineering in China shows great promise.

Abstract: Non-photorealistic computer graphics has created an intriguing new field espousing expression, abstraction and stylization in preference to traditional computer graphics concerns about photorealism. It has two complimentary goals: the communication of information using images and rendering images in interesting and novel visual styles which are free from the traditional computer graphics constraint of producing images which are life-like. Many artistic and visual styles have been realized in non-photorealistic computer graphics, including interactive and automated systems for drawing and painting [Sayeed & Howard, 2006]. There is an international symposium NPAR (non-photorealistic animation and rendering) dedicated to non-photorealistic computer graphics, sponsored by the ACM SIGGRAPH and in co-operation with Eurographics. In 2009 it is the second time for NPAR to be collocated with SIGGRAPH, and this allows us to raise attention to this important field, and to open it to new people from academia, arts and industry.

Abstract:This is the 29th annual survey series of bibliographies on image engineering in China.This statistic and analysis study aims to capture the up-to-date development of image engineering in China,provide a targeted means of literature searching facility for readers working in related areas,and supply a useful recommendation for the editors of journals and potential authors of papers.Specifically,considering the wide distribution of related publications in China,all references(865)on image engineering research and technique are selected carefully from the research papers(2 989 in total)pub-lished in all issues(154)of a set of 15 Chinese journals.These 15 journals are considered important,in which papers con-cerning image engineering have higher quality and are relatively concentrated.The selected references are initially classi-fied into five categories(image processing,image analysis,image understanding,technique application,and survey)and then into 23 specialized classes in accordance with their main contents(same as the last 18 years).Analysis and discus-sions about the statistics of the results of classifications by journal and by category are also presented.Analysis on the statis-tics in 2023 shows that:from a research perspective,image analysis has currently received the most attention,with image segmentation and primitive detection,object detection and recognition,as well as human biometric feature extraction and validation being the focus of research;from an application perspective,remote sensing,radar,sonar,surveying and map-ping are the most active fields,and the development and application of new image technologies are expanding rapidly.In conclusion,this work shows a general and up-to-date picture of the various continuing progresses,either for depth or for width,of image engineering in China in 2023.The statistics for 29 years also provide readers with more comprehensive and credible information on the development trends of various research directions.

Those selected references are classified first into 5 categories (image processing, image analysis, image understanding, technique application and survey), and then into 21 classes according to their main contents. Some analysis and discussions about the statistics made on the classification results are also presented. This work shows a general and off-the-shelf picture of the various progresses of image engineering in China. In 2002, the number of research papers in image engineering has a considerable increase. Except traditional image segmentation and image coding, new research areas, such as image formation techniques, digital image watermarking, human face and organ detection, image matching and information fusion, and image and video retrieval are still in fast progresses.
