Abstract:The synthesis of a polyethylene (PE) gel containing self-incarcerated palladium(0) nanoparticles is described. The PE gel matrix without any special functionality was synthesized by one-pot chain walking copolymerization of ethylene and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate facilitated by a Pd-diimine complex (1). The Pd(II) species from 1 were immobilized in situ onto the gel matrix and further reduced to Pd(0) nanoparticles as a result of catalyst 1 deactivation during polymerization and methanol (a reducer) washing in the polymer purification process. The resulting Pd-containing PE gel (2) is shown to be a high-performance and facilely reusable heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck and Suzuki coupling reactions of iodobenzene or aryl bromides. An average TOF of 460 h(-1) was achieved with an average 0.57 ppm Pd leaching in each cycle of the Heck reaction of iodobenzene when the PE gel 2 was recycled 10 times. A maximum TOF of 3.33 x 104 h-(1) was reached and less than 0.64 ppm of Pd was leached in the Suzuki reactions of aryl bromides with water as solvent.

Abstract:A complex of triphenylphosphine functionalized hydroxyethyl cellulose(HEC-OPPh3)was synthesized and then coordinated with palladium acetate to form the hydroxyethyl cellulose supported triphenylphosphine-palladium(HEC-OPPh3-Pd)catalyst.The thermogravimetric analysis(TGA)indicated that the catalyst was stable below 180℃in air.Further study showed that HEC-OPPh3-Pd could catalyze Suzuki coupling reaction efficiently in C2H5OH∶H2O(1∶1).

Abstract:Bearing the merits of convenient functionalization and versatile framework composition, hypercrosslinked polymers are employed as promising candidates in green catalysis. In this study, a new hypercrosslinked polymer supported palladium catalyst has been synthesized based on pyrrole functionalization from triphenyl benzene and pyrrole via Scholl reaction and palladium anchoring on the polymer surface. The structure of prepared Pd catalyst was confirmed by TEM, SEM, EDX, XRD, N2 adsorption–desorption, solid state 13C NMR, TGA, FT-IR, XPS, and ICP analyses. The novel complex can be served as an effective catalyst for the preparation of biphenyl compounds with the yields up to 100 % in EtOH: H2O (1:1) at 60 °C by using 0.07 mol% of catalyst in air. More importantly, the catalyst also has significant advantages in terms of facile availability of raw materials, chemical and thermal stability, and cost-effective synthesis. Due to the high specific surface area, and the coordination of pyrrole groups with palladium on the surface of this polymer, this catalyst could effectively prevent palladium leaching (<1.1 %). Furthermore, the catalyst could be recovered by simple centrifugation for four consecutive times. The study provides new insight into the immobilization of palladium on such polymer surface in other heterogeneous catalysis systems.

Abstract:A polymeric monophosphine ligand WePhos has been synthesized and complexed with palladium(ii) acetate [Pd(OAc)(2)] to generate a thermoresponsive pre-catalyst that can shuttle between water and organic phases, with the change being regulated by temperature. The structure of the polymeric ligand was confirmed with matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) analysis, as well as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. This polymeric metal complex enables highly efficient Pd-catalyzed cross-couplings and tandem reactions using 50 to 500 ppm palladium, and this can facilitate reactions that are tolerant to a broad spectrum of (hetero)aryl substrates and functional groups, as demonstrated with 73 examples with up to 99% isolated yields. Notably, 97% Pd remained in the aqueous phase after 10 runs of catalyst recycling experiments, as determined via inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) measurements, indicating highly efficient catalyst transfer. Furthermore, a continuous catalyst recycling approach has been successfully developed based on flow chemistry in combination with the catalyst shuttling behavior, allowing Suzuki-Miyaura couplings to be conducted at gram-scales with as little as 10 ppm Pd loading. Given the significance of transition-metal catalyzed cross-coupling and increasing interest in sustainable chemistry, this work is an important step towards the development of a responsive catalyst, in addition to having high activity, by tuning the structures of the ligands using polymer science.

Abstract:Palladium immobilized on an amide and ether functionalized porous organic polymer (Pd@AEPOP) is reported to be an effective heterogeneous catalyst for the Heck cross-coupling reaction of aryl iodides with styrene for the synthesis of diphenylethene derivatives. Excellent yields can be obtained using a 0.8 mol% Pd catalyst loading under the optimized reaction condition. The heterogeneous Pd@AEPOP catalyst can also be applied on the Suzuki reaction and the reduction of nitroarene.

Abstract:Porous polymer supported palladium catalyst for cross coupling reactions with high activity has been successfully prepared by coordination of Pd2+ species with Schiff bases functionalized porous polymer. The catalyst has been systemically investigated by a series of characterizations such as TEM, N2 adsorption, NMR, IR, XPS, etc. TEM and N2 isotherms show that the sample maintains the nanoporous structure after the modification and coordination. XPS results show that chemical state of palladium species in the catalyst is mainly +2. More importantly, the catalyst shows very high activities and excellent recyclability in a series of coupling reactions including Suzuki, Sonogashira, and Heck reactions. Hot filtration and poison of catalysts experiments have also been performed and the results indicate that soluble active species (mainly Pd(0) species) in-situ generated from the catalyst under the reaction conditions are the active intermediates, which would redeposit to the supporter after the reactions.

Abstract:Bearing an intrinsic green nature, biopolymers are expected to serve as ideal alternatives in the sustainable conversion process. In this paper, a N-Heterocyclic carbene functionalized hydroxyethyl cellulose supported palladium catalyst (HEC-NHC-Pd) has been successfully prepared through a surface functionalization approach. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized through TEM, CP/MAS 13C NMR, and XPS analyses, etc. The new and eco-friendly catalyst was effectively employed in Suzuki reactions in ethanol aqueous solution. Dependent on dual coordination sites (OH and N-Methylimidazole) binding to the active component (Pd), the palladium complex exhibited high stability and low metal leaching (<1%). Additionally, the environmental friendliness catalyst could be retrieved through simple centrifugation within a few cycles. This study also offers a new pathway for the application of such biopolymer surface functionalization in organic transformations.

Abstract:Through the substitution reaction of hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) and 4,4′-diaminobiphenyl (DABP), a crosslinked polymer HCCP-DABP was synthesized by a conventional and convenient route. Owing to the strong coordination ability of pincer-type bis(amino) scaffold in the matrix, the polymer was successfully used as a support to form stable palladium catalyst complex Pd/HCCP-DABP. The palladium catalyst showed excellent reactivity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction. In addition, the catalyst can be readily recovered and reused for further transformations at least 10 times without significant decrease in catalytic activity.

Abstract:The utilization of environmentally friendly biopolymer poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) as a support for metal catalysts is an unexplored area. Herein, exploring a stable and recyclable heterogeneous palladium (Pd) catalyst based on PHB for the Suzuki cross-coupling reaction is an attractive topic. In this study, a novel hydrophobic and hydrophilic core-shell bead supported Pd catalyst was developed by using PHB particle as a hydrophobic rigid framework and hydrophilic chitosan (CS) as the surface of the supporting matrix to fix Pd nanoparticles (NPs). The results of structural characterization showed that the Pd NPs with a small average size of 2.3±0.82 nm were uniformly distributed on the surface of the PHB-CS bead with a Pd content of 0.12 wt%. This demonstrated that the PHB-CS bead created a stable coordinated environment for Pd fixation, preventing Pd leaching. Furthermore, the Pd@PHB-CS catalyst exhibited high catalytic efficiency with 99% conversion in the Suzuki reaction under mild conditions, using a solvent mixture of EtOH and H2O (1:1) for 0.5 h. It is worth noting that the catalyst exhibits excellent stability, and reusability. It can be reused five times without a significant reduction in activity while maintaining its structural integrity. The successful construction of Pd@PHB-CS will further expand the application of PHB in the field of metal catalysts and may help establish a green and environmentally friendly multifunctional platform for the development of highly recyclable heterogeneous catalysts containing metal nanoparticles.

Abstract:Given that heterogeneous palladium-catalyzed C-C bond formation reactions under continuous-flow conditions are well suited for the efficient and safe production of pharmaceuticals and functional materials, the development of active and durable catalysts for this purpose is a matter of high practical significance. Here, a previously established molecular convolution methodology was used to synthesize catalysts for Suzuki-Miyaura coupling under flow conditions by blending convoluted polymeric palladium catalysts (prepared from copolymers of 4-vinylpyridine and 4-tert-butylstyrene) and crosslinked polymeric auxiliary materials (prepared from copolymers of divinylbenzene and 4-tert-butylstyrene). The optimal catalyst exhibited high performance and durability and allowed numerous biaryl products such as liquid-crystalline materials, organic electroluminescent materials, and pharmaceuticals to be continuously synthesized with turnover frequencies of up to 238 h-1 . In a demonstration of practical utility, the developed catalytic system was used for the continuous synthesis of two pharmaceuticals (felbinac and fenbufen) in water as the sole solvent.

Abstract:Water-soluble ionic liquid-supported diols have been used as phosphine-free ligands in Suzuki couplings of aryl idides/bromides/chlorides under mild conditions in aqueous solvent.It was found that 2,2-bis((1-hexylimidazolium)mehyl) propane-1,3-diol hexafluorophosphate (4) in combination with palladium (II) salts gave the most significant catalyst.Suzuki couplings of aryl iodides/bromides occurred efficiently at room temperature in water/acetonitrile.Notably, the reactions of hydrophilic aryl bromides gave high yields in neat water.The catalyst PdCl 2 -4 was recycled five times in Suzuki couplings in water before catalyst activity began to significantly drop.The average yield of five cycles was >95% per cycle.

Abstract:A facile and readily available Fe-ppm-Pd/C catalyst has been developed for catalyzing Suzuki-Miyaura cross- coupling reactions. When combined with dicyclohexyl(2 ',6 '-dimethoxy-[1,1 '-biphenyl]-2-yl) phosphine (SPhos), this catalyst, with low levels of palladium (as low as 180 ppm), efficiently facilitates cross-coupling reactions between aryl boronic acids (or aryl neopentyl-1,3-diol boronic ester) and a wide range of aryl halides, including inactivated aryl chlorides. Additionally, the recovered Fe-ppm-Pd/C catalyst has demonstrated sustained catalytic activity over four runs, indicating minimal decline in performance. This suggests the catalyst's potential for long-term use and its practicality in industrial applications.

Abstract:Biobased catalysts play a crucial role in sustainable chemistry, using natural resources to support eco-friendly processes. While palladium catalysts are essential for various industrial applications, they often pose environmental challenges due to their non-reusability and tendency to degrade. To address these issues, we developed an innovative phenylalanine-based catalyst containing palladium (C-PhebPd) designed for the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction. The natural amino acids, used as monomers, chelate palladium, preventing leaching, unlike other heterogeneous catalysts that use palladium nanoparticles, which can be released over time, leading to catalyst degradation. Such catalyst exhibits outstanding performance in aqueous media at moderate temperatures, facilitating cross-coupling reactions between various aryl halides and arylboronic acids with high yields of up to 99%. The affordable synthetic procedure and C-PhebPd's stability make it potentially scalable for industrial applications. The robustness of this catalyst was also proved by recyclability tests up to seven cycles. Further investigation into its capabilities could unlock additional insights for various catalytic transformations.

Abstract:Pd(OAc)2 combined with an ethanol/K2HPO4 aqueous two-phase system was developed as an inexpensive and efficient catalytic system for Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling. The couplings between aryl iodides and arylboronic acids proceeded smoothly in moderate to excellent yields at 60°C in the aqueous two-phase system, and aryl bromides required a higher reaction temperature (reflux at about 80°C) to improve the yield.

Abstract:Palladium nanoparticles with narrow size distribution were prepared by applying poly(ethyleneglycol) (PEG) and Pd(OAc)2 in the absence of other chemical agents. PEG appeared to act as both reducing agent and stabilizer. The results of XRD show that the concentration of precursor played the key role to the development of palladium nanoparticles. The reduction of Pd2+ to nano Pd was sensitive to the chain length of the PEG, and the larger chain length PEG such as PEG 2000 exhibited higher reduction reactivity. The as-prepared palladium nanoparticles were found to be a highly stable and reusable catalyst for Heck reaction.
