Abstract:A metal-free, visible-light-induced oxidative C-C bond cleavage of cycloketones with molecular oxygen is described. Cooperative Brønsted-acid catalysis and photocatalysis enabled selective C-C bond cleavage of cycloketones to generate an array of γ-, δ- and ϵ-keto esters under very mild conditions. Mechanistic studies indicate that singlet molecular oxygen (1 O2 ) is responsible for this transformation.

Abstract:A novel metal-free allylic C-C sigma-bond cleavage of simple olefins to give valuable cinnamyl aldehydes is reported. 1,2-Aryl or alkyl migration through allylic C-C bond cleavage occurs in this transformation, which is assisted by an alkyl azide reagent. This method enables O-atom incorporation into simple unfunctionalized olefins to construct cinnamyl aldehydes. The reaction features simple hydrocarbon substrates, metal-free conditions, and high regio- and stereoselectivity.

Abstract:Selective cleavage and formation of covalent bonds is an everlasting topic in the science of synthesis. Recently, much attention has been paid to the activation and functionalization of inert covalent chemical bonds such as C-H, C-O, C-Cl bonds, etc. In this edge article, we report that hydrogen bonding may mediate efficient and highly selective cleavage of O=S and C-S bonds in 1,2-allenyl sulfoxides with I-2 and BnSH, which transfer the oxygen to the adjacent allenylic carbon atom forming a ketone or aldehyde carbonyl functionality with one C=C bond in the allene moiety remaining in a highly stereoselective manner. This method provides a general and highly stereoselective route to the synthetically important yet difficult to prepare polysubstituted enals or enones.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide is a key C1 feedstock for the industrial production of hydrocarbons, where it is used to make millions of tonnes of chemicals, fuels, and solvents per annum. Many transition metal complexes can coordinate CO, but the formation of new C−C bonds in well-defined compounds from the scission and subsequent coupling of two or more CO moieties at a transition metal centre remains a challenge. Herein, we report the use of low-coordinate iron(II) complexes for the selective scission and homologation of CO affording unusual squaraines and iron carboxylates at ambient temperature and pressure. A modification of the ligand framework allows for the isolation and structural characterisation of a proposed metallacyclic Fe(II) carbene intermediate. These results indicate that, with the appropriate choice of supporting ligands, it is possible to cleave and homologate carbon monoxide under mild conditions using an abundant and environmentally benign low-coordinate, first row transition metal.

Abstract:The C-O bond cleavage for activation of alcohols is synthetically useful and practically challenging. This work describes carbazate as a new type of electrochemically activated alkylating agent derived from ubiquitous alcohols for direct functionalization of heteroarenes under mild electrolytic conditions. The simple undivided cell at low oxidative potentials with carbon/platinum electrode set-ups offers excellent substrate tolerance, affording a variety of primary, secondary and tertiary alkyl-decorated heterocycles in good chemical yields. Furthermore, the mechanism for this electrochemical deoxyalkylation reaction has been investigated.

Abstract:The preparation of carbonyl compounds by the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds in 1,2-diols under mild reaction conditions is a very significant reaction and is widely employed in various scenarios. Avoiding the use of harmful stoichiometric oxidants and adopting a greener chemical process remain a challenge for this reaction to date. In this manuscript, a heterogeneous metal-free photocatalytic strategy without any additive was developed for aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds in 1,2-diols at ambient conditions with visible light. The reaction mechanism was further studied through a series of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. In addition, the catalytic system showed a broad substrates scope, including aliphatic (linear or cyclic) 1,2-diols, benzylic, alkenyl 1,2-diols, and alpha-hydroxy acids (such as lactic acid). Thus, this strategy could serve as a method for the transformation of 1,2-diols to corresponding carbonyl compounds by the aerobic oxidative cleavage of C-C bonds.

Abstract:Functional group interconversion is of great significance in organic synthesis. However, aerobic cleavage of C=N bonds to access carbonyl compounds still suffered from some limitations such as harsh reaction conditions, stoichiometric oxidants, poor substrate scope and use of toxic reagents. Herein, we report a catalyst‐free and photo‐induced aerobic cleavage of C=N bonds to afford diverse carbonyl compounds using oxygen from air as green oxidant. This mild methodology permits N‐tosylhydrazones converted into the corresponding carbonyl compounds including ketones, amides, aldehydes and carboxylic acids, showing broad functional group tolerance and compatibility. Moreover, the gram‐scale reaction and post‐modification of complicated molecules proved the applicability and efficiency of this strategy. Finally, a plausible mechanism was proposed based on spectroscopic investigations and detailed mechanistic studies.

Abstract:Selective C–C bond establishment from plentiful carbonyl compounds, which represents a crucial route to get the value-added products, is still far from satisfying both academic and industrial needs. Here, confirmed by both experiment and theoretical calculation, we report versatile and efficient asymmetric cross-coupling between carbonyl radicals (from aldehydes) and aryl radicals (from aryl halides) by adopting porous chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as catalysts under light illumination. In addition, these MOFs work well in catalyzing secondary amine-mediated asymmetric β- and α-carbonyl arylation of saturated aldehydes and ketones, thanks to the switchable features of both photoabsorbing metal-nitrogen clusters and chiral organic ligands inside MOFs. This work opens the avenue toward the rational design of heterogeneous catalysts for precise regio- and stereo-selective syntheses.

Abstract:Organic chemists now can construct carbon-carbon σ-bonds selectively and sequentially, whereas methods for the selective cleavage of carbon-carbon σ-bonds, especially for unreactive hydrocarbons, remain limited. Activation by ring strain, directing groups, or in the presence of a carbonyl or a cyano group is usually required. In this work, by using a sequential strategy site-selective cleavage and borylation of C(aryl)-CH3 bonds has been developed under directing group free and transition metal free conditions. Methyl groups of various arenes are selectively cleaved and replaced by boryl groups. Mechanistic analysis suggests that it proceeds by a sequential intermolecular oxidation and coupling of a transient aryl radical, generated by radical decarboxylation, involving a pyridine-stabilized persistent boryl radical.

Abstract:The successive cleavage and functionalization of C–C bonds in alcohols has become a rapidly growing field for the discovery of new transformations. However, achieving it in a direct and selective manner remains challenging because of the intrinsic inertness of C–C bonds. Herein, we report a novel and efficient protocol that enables the direct synthesis of amides via heterogeneous manganese-oxide-catalyzed successive cleavage and amidation of C–C bonds in alcohols. A wide range of primary and secondary alcohols, 1,2-diols, and even β-O-4 and β-1 lignin model compounds can undergo C–C bond cleavage smoothly to deliver one- or multiple-carbon shorter amides. Moreover, a slight modification of reaction conditions allows for the cleavage and cyanation of alcohols to access sterically hindered nitriles. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that high specific surface area, abundant oxygen vacancies, and moderate acid sites contribute to the high catalytic performance of the manganese oxides.

Abstract:Effective cleavage and functionalization of C(OH)‐C bonds is of great importance for the production of value‐added chemicals from renewable biomass resources such as carbohydrates, lignin and their derivatives. The efficiency and selectivity of oxidative cleavage of C(OH)‐C bonds are hindered by their inert nature and various side reactions associated with the hydroxyl group. The oxidative conversion of secondary alcohols to produce aldehydes is particularly challenging because the generated aldehydes tend to be over‐oxidized to acids or the other side products. Noble‐metal based catalysts are necessary to get satisfactory aldehyde yields. Herein, for the first time, we report efficient aerobic oxidative conversion of secondary aromatic alcohols into aromatic aldehydes using non‐noble metal catalysts and environmentally benign oxygen, without any additional base. It was found that CuI‐1,10‐phenanthroline (Cu‐phen) complex showed outstanding performance for the reactions. The C(OH)‐C bonds of a diverse array of aromatic secondary alcohols were effectively cleaved and functionalized, selectively affording aldehydes with excellent yields. Detailed mechanism study revealed a radical mediated pathway for the oxidative reaction. We believe that the findings in this work will lead to many explorations in non‐noble metal catalyzed oxidative reactions.

Abstract:Using moelcular oxygen as the terminal oxidant, various aryl halide-containing beta-aryl ketones and aldehydes can be synthesized directly from readily available allyic alcohols and boronic acids via palladium-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reactions. The dual roles of copper, including electron-carrier and Lewis acid functions, are supposed to be critical for the high reactivity and selectivity of this aerobic oxidative coupling transformation.

Abstract:With the growing significance of green chemistry in organic synthesis, electrochemical oxidation has seen rapid development. Compounds undergo oxidation–reduction reactions through electron transfer at the electrode surface. This article proposes the use of electrochemical methods to achieve cleavage of the benzyl C–N bond. This method selectively oxidatively cleaves the C–N bond without the need for metal catalysts or external oxidants. Additionally, primary, secondary, and tertiary amines exhibit good adaptability under these conditions, utilizing water as the sole source of oxygen.

Abstract:Alkoxy radical‐mediated carbon‐carbon bond cleavages have emerged as a powerful strategy to complement traditional ionic‐type transformations. However, carbon‐carbon cleavage reaction triggered by alkoxy radical intermediate derived from the combination of alkyl radical and dioxygen, is scarce and underdeveloped. Herein, we report alkoxy radical, which was generated from alkyl radical and dioxygen, mediated selective cleavage of unstrained carbon‐carbon bond for the oxysulfonylation of 1,1‐disubstituted alkenes, providing facile access to a variety of valuable β‐keto sulfones. Mechanistic experiments indicated alkoxy radical intermediate that underwent subsequent regioselective β‐scission might be involved in the reaction and preliminary computational studies were conducted to provide a detailed explanation on the regioselectivity of the C‐C bond cleavage. Notably, the strategy was successfully applied for constructing uneasily obtained architecturally intriguing molecules.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Great efforts have been directed toward C-C bond activation and transformation. In contrast, regioselective C−C and C-O bond cleavage and amination is much rare. Here, we report a novel strategy via t-butyl nitrite (TBN) mediated regioselective C−C and C-O bond cleavage for the construction of new C-N bonds. The protocol provides an efficient approach for the synthesis unsymmetrically substituted N-aryl oxalamides using green H2O and TBN as the source of oxygen.The reaction features wide amines substrate scope and good functional tolerance for ester compounds.

Abstract:Construction of C-C bonds via reductive coupling of aldehydes and ketones is hindered by the highly negative reduction potential of these carbonyl substrates, particularly ketones, and this renders the formation of ketyl radicals extremely endergonic. Here, we report the efficient activation of carbonyl compounds by the formation of specific host-guest interactions in a hydroxyl-decorated porous photocatalyst. MFM-300(Cr) exhibits a band gap of 1.75 eV and shows excellent catalytic activity and stability towards the photoreductive coupling of 30 different aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding 1,2-diols at room temperature. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy confirm the generation of ketyl radicals via confinement within MFM-300(Cr). This protocol removes simultaneously the need for a precious metal-based photocatalyst or for amine-based sacrificial agents for the photochemical synthesis. The construction of C-C bonds via reductive coupling carbonyl compounds is a huge challenge in organic transformations. Here, the authors develop a highly efficient system for the photoreductive coupling of aldehydes and ketones to the corresponding 1,2-diols under mild conditions.

Abstract:C-O bond cleavage is often a key process in defunctionalization of organic compounds as well as in degradation of natural polymers. However, it seldom occurs regioselectively for different types of C-O bonds under metal-free mild conditions. Here we report a facile chemo-selective cleavage of the α-C-O bonds in α-carboxy ketones by commercially available pinacolborane under the catalysis of diazaphosphinane based on a mechanism switch strategy. This new reaction features high efficiency, low cost and good group-tolerance, and is also amenable to catalytic deprotection of desyl-protected carboxylic acids and amino acids. Mechanistic studies indicated an electron-transfer-initiated radical process, underlining two crucial steps: (1) the initiator azodiisobutyronitrile switches originally hydridic reduction to kinetically more accessible electron reduction; and (2) the catalytic phosphorus species upconverts weakly reducing pinacolborane into strongly reducing diazaphosphinane.
